#Skittery Newsies

in manhattan, when one newsie gets sick, they all get sick. and they're fucked right now. "it ain't my fault!" jojo shouts. "buttons got me sick!" everyone rounds on buttons.

"yeah, like i fuckin chose to be sick," he mutters. the crowd of sick newsies starts yelling at him.

"everyone shuddup!" jack shouts from his bed. "i got a headache."

"someone gimme some help out here!" tommy boy calls from outside. specs, blink, and skittery go to give him a hand with whatever it is.

"what happened?" all the newsies hear snatches of conversation from outside.

"-in the street."

"-when to stop-" blink and skittery enter, holding an unconscious race between them. "ay, mush, move it." they toss race onto a bed.

"what happened to him?" ike asks quietly. there's a small cut on race's forehead that's bleeding.

"oh, he passed out in the street," skittery explains. "he's sick and wouldn't take the day off. never was very smart."

"now he's dead," blink adds.

"what?" a shout goes up from some of the younger ones until mush smacks blink around the head and tells everyone blink's kidding.

"they're kids, stop scarin them," mush orders him. "also, race being sick means only one thing. someone has gotta go tell spot conlon."

"yeah, that ain't scary," blink mutters. "uh, boots, go to brooklyn and tell spot he's got a sick boyfriend." boots heads off dutifully.

the next hour is a mess. all the newsies fret over race, who sleeps the whole time. and then everyone goes silent and dumbstruck when spot enters.

they're used to cold, intimidating, angry spot. not a caring spot. not a spot who immediately runs to race's side and starts checking on him.

spot presses his hand to race's forehead and then hugs him tight, pressing kisses to the top of his head. "ay!" crutchie shouts. "everyone hit the beds and give them some space!" race wakes up soon enough, with a worried spot sitting bedside.

"race!"

"whatcha doing here? i's just sick. ain't dying or nothing." spot kisses his forehead and stares at him.

"ya passed out in the street. gotta take it easy."

"when one of us gets sick, we all get sick. i ain't dying, spot, i promise."

"you need food." race shrugs.

"i ain't hungry."

"race. listen to me. you need food, you're sick."

"i'll throw it up."

"i will shove it down your throat if you don't eat the food i bring ya."

"spot-"

"tony. shut up. i's getting you some chicken soup. don't argue." race watches him walk out, smiling a little dopily.

all the newsies start hooting and cheering, whistling at race.

"alright, alright!" race shouts. "i got a headache."

i saw your post about how newsies sleep and I was wondering if you wanna make one about how they wake up? (you don't have to!)

BETT

jack: super grumpy when he wakes up

david: cant function till he has coffee

les: wakes up with the sun (David is not very happy about this, seeing as Les usually wakes him up)

race: barley conscious for the first hour or so after waking up

mush: wakes up happy (when is this boy not happy tbh)

blink: can be awake immediately

spot: like I said before, he doesn't, but when he does he is super pissy (like comparatively he makes jack look happy)

bumlets: will try and stay asleep as long as possible

skittery: wakes up in panic

swifty: also cannot function for the first little bit after waking up

tumbler: somehow falls off his bunk almost every night (how do you think he got his name)

this will take forever so just lmk if you want a pt.2

You can also ask me livesies/uksies things but as you know I am much less knowledgeable on them and can't really say much 😅

But! Skittery and Tumbler. The brothers ever (related or not, it doesn't matter).

I did two redraws of things from the very end of the movie after the strike is settled with them because they are too cute <3

Tried a bit more sticker-style to not have to shade much haha

So in my AUs they are usually related and actually brothers, but I can also just see Tumbles looking at Skittery and going "that one!" and adopting him. Just like cats sometimes adopt their owners instead of the other way around.

Especially when they're blood brothers Skittery sees the tiny little thing that is Tumbler when he's born (they have at least 5 or more years difference in age in my mind, in canon probably more like 7) and knows at first glance: this is my little brother, I'll protect him with my life.

In canon era that also means that when his father gets worse and worse and his mother was hospitalized for "hysteria and schizophrenic behaviour" that he just runs and doesn't look back, even if Tumbler might only be two or three years old at that time. Tumbler has been in the lodge almost since he can remember and even Skittery is there pretty early and Kloppman only lets them pay for one bed, at least for a few years. (Not like Tumbler takes up a lot of space)

Skittery does fear he's also being a bit like his mom (always seeing things, being skittish, waking up in cold sweat) and Tumbler, even if he doesn't remember any of that, sometimes worries too, just because his big brother does. He's followed Skittery around every day for selling until some of the other boys also got close to them and even if Skittery isn't as happy to leave him with others, he does so with the people he trusts (which aren't a lot)

In mine and Mack's modern AU we have a five year age gap for them and they are just adorable together, trust me. But also Tumbler hangs on his big brother's sleeve a lot, just wanting to be close to him (to be protected by him)

I think I shouldn't talk too much more right now (maybe in a reply) but it's definitely a thing.

Hi, just wanted to say I absolutely loved your Skittery/Bumlets art, it was so nice to see them! They looked so precious. As is easy to see on my blog I also ship them with Swifty but seeing *any* art with any of the three characters, especially two of them interacting is so cute :)

Also cool you saw Blood Drips not long ago, defintely the best horror movie out there
