The coordination required to get 23 friends and family members all the way across the world to the Isle of Skye for our wedding, turns out, is trickier than you would think. my subconscious made me marry jefree star
130420
I was standing in a mall in a grocery store, right next to the confections section, where you can always trust the lady behind the counter, a true master of her craft, to pack a piece of cheap fatty cake into a sheet of translucent plastic in a matter of seconds and hand it to your sugar-craving hands. Today however, I was not alone! Next to me stood a girl I know from class, who I’m going to call Sadie just in case she shows up again. IRL I don’t vibe with her but she keeps finding her way into my dreams anyway.
The lady behind the counter looked at the two of us, squinting, and then challenged us to a food tasting test: she’d give us a piece of something, we’d have to name the ingredients, then we would go to the fish section of the store, get partnered up with some random person to cook the food itself. Sadie and I look at each other in confusion. “Oh fuck, but sure”. This is not the only time in this dream I consented to something weird.
Anyway, the sweets lady gives Sadie a chunk of sponge cake and a mint-coloured macaron to me. I put it in my mouth. As you do. Still chewing, I say “Cloves, definitely cloves. Also uhh, butter, flour, probably honey? Condensed milk.” As you do?
The lady’s jaw drops to the floor. She immediately goes “N-nobody’s ever been able to point out the cloves before, how did you know?”
I take a whole bud out of my mouth like bitch what is this then. I did not, however, tell her that cloves taste like vomit to me. Apparently in this dreamland I got all of the ingredients correct too, so I head to the fish section feeling all proud of my wondrous flavour palette.
I got partnered up with a lanky middle eastern guy and we got to work. At some point I had the most revolutionary idea of ideas “hey, let’s add sugar into sweets”. Genius. The guy gives me thumbs up and I go around looking for sugar. Little did I know, apparently I stumbled across an oasis of sugar nobody’s been able to find, since walking back with a pack in hands was near impossible. Everybody started clawing at me like a rabid dog, trying snatch the sugar from me. Never fear though, for my cooking comrade charges at me with a shopping cart, picks me up, puts me in the cart and we nyoom out of there.
We stop in some lounge area on the second floor. How did we get there in a shopping card and, speaking of that, where was the shopping cart? Haven’t got a clue.
I was looking out the giant window, admiring the lovely pines and casual tornadoes outside, when someone showed me the neat new forum thing someone made. A mixture of a bboard and a daily challenge site, like duolingo but orange and somehow more awful. I don’t remember what the challenges were, perhaps I was too tired from being a culinary genius. What I do remember though, was that the site had a surprisingly functioning chat. It wasn’t amazing, there were no proper notifications or anything, but it did the job. Like a bboard had a weird baby with duolingo AND interpals. Naturally, I start using that function.
I think I zoned out or something, there’s a gap in my memory, but the next thing I know I’ve said yes (why) to Jeffree fucking Star proposing to me (why) and the guy’s here, sitting on the floor by the wall looking as miserable as ever. Subconscious, wdym?
Now, the interesting part is, my brain somehow managed to make Jeff more confusing than he normally is. In the dream Jeff was explicitly stated to be genderq, used almost exclusively she/her pronouns, was simultaneously doing drag and presenting as they normally do. They were wearing a ghastly pink-lilac amorphous dress thing and their hair wasn’t the iconic bob, it was a choppy, spiky, star-shaped thing. Star, haha, get it. Not that I minded their appearance, it was pretty neat, but like...why Jeff of all people and how the fuck did I say yes. WHY WERE THEY ON THE APP TOO. I feel like this was actually an arranged marriage between a 34y.o. And a 17y.o. Back in the medieval times or some shit,
So I walk up my fiance Jeffy Jeff and they immediately jump to being all giddy and excited about the wedding. Apparently it was already scheduled to happen on May 24th. Jeff being Jeff, they want to start coordinating the clothing asap. “Cool” I think and the same second we are transported to this giant runway. Jeff is now on about a meter tall stilts, clad in a flowy dress of sunshine golds and yellows, with pineapple-shaped glasses and back to their white bob. Above him there is a counter, a counter of how much money we’re gonna lose of clothing. Gotta love wedding tax amirite? Anyhow, my lovely partnerTM gracefully gestures towards the runway and out comes my classmate Leia, who always shows up in clothing dreams. Neat. She’s on stilts too and is trying to manage walking with reaaaaly fancy frilly pants. She was complaining about them the whole way, but Jeff was amazed anyway.
What I got from her monologue was that Jeff wanted to see what the guests would wear first and that everyone was bringing their own clothes. I immediately got nervous because I didn’t have anything that would match the level of pizzaz on display here, I didn’t want to be out in one of Jeff’s dresses either because 1) I’m smol 2) no dresses for me, no thank you. I was more anxious about the latter, because I realised I wasn’t out to Jeffy Jeff yet, I was scared they’d reject me or something but at the same time I was hoping they would because about them I started realising “wait I don’t even know them WAIT”. I was losing my shit while my fiance was yelling “THAT’S SPECTACULAR DARLING” in the background. Remember the money counter? Yeah, it showed that actually Jeff was gaining money from all of that.
At some point the fashion show ended and I brought up the courage to go and tell Jeff about my feelings. I go upstairs and they’re on a bed, aggressively making out with some random guy in a buzzcut. Frankly I didn’t care, they can do what they want, instead I went to the window and listened to the birds spilling tea about people I didn’t know. As you do. I walked to the room on the other side of a hallway, which was apparently my sibling’s room, and I found Jeff there, still in their gold dress, just chilling on the floor by the heater. They were petting a rabbit too.
I kneeled beside them, but instead of anything coherent “would she fancy an androgenie” leaves my mouth. Without a shred of doubt they replied with “oh so you don’t know the coda to pilot yet,” and I said “my words exactly luv.” Needless to say, the wedding wasn’t canceled.
So I went back downstairs and started ranting about it to this random girl with red hair. Mostly about how I don’t even know the person. She looked me dead in the eye and said “you did talk to Skye for years tho.” And I immediately went “shit ur right I do know them,,,,, but  idk if I want to marry yet yknow.” She suggested I at least try to maybe postpone it a month or two and then I remembered that I hadn’t yet told my family about my engagement.
And then I woke up on a cliffhanger.

Why we’re eloping
Tumblr media
Image from White Ash styled shoot
The date is set, the venue is booked, and so are our photographer and florist. That’s right, the wedding is finally on and...we’re eloping! I’m not sure if an elopement counts as authentic if you aren’t running away from home to get married in a secret, moonlit ceremony, but that would have been a little difficult to coordinate across international borders. Owen and I are not running away and we’ve let all our friends and family know about the wedding beforehand, so it’s not a traditional elopement on those counts. Still, we’re going off to the Scottish Borders next March (home to many an elopement over the centuries) and marrying each other in a ceremony with just the two of us.
Elopement etiquette aside, it was never an option for us to keep our wedding completely in the dark - everyone close to us knew it was going to happen at some point and we’d even toyed with the idea of flying one set of people halfway around the world before running into some crushingly practical concerns. We’d originally been thinking of an intimate backyard wedding with a few loved ones in attendance - neither Owen nor I have ever had any fondness for huge, extravagant weddings - but it proved to be a logistical impossibility especially with UK immigration laws. So when we decided to ditch the wedding and elope instead, it wasn’t an easy decision to make.
Tumblr media
Image from A Beautiful and Whimsical Woodland Elopement
Our reasons for eloping might have been practical rather than impossibly romantic, but it increasingly feels ever righter for us. Last year, when we made the decision to elope, I wasn’t 100% sure about it. I didn’t know if I would be able to let go of the cosy little backyard wedding I’d been daydreaming about most of my life! But once we actually started getting our budget together, setting aside dates, booking our wedding vendors and fitting everything within our immigration timeline, I caught myself thinking on multiple occasions how glad I am that we’re eloping. I wasn’t expecting to feel this way to be honest, but our decision to elope has turned out to be the best wedding related decision we could possibly have taken. I’m trying to picture what things might have been like half an year away from a traditional wedding and the thought itself is stressing me out! It’s all fine browsing through Pinterest and pinning dream wedding ideas but the actual organizing of a wedding with people attending from two different sides of the world is just panic inducing. It’s a nightmare. I’m so glad we decided to elope, no regrets ever.

I only wish that I could find more elopement inspiration online, especially images with fat and mixed race couples like us. I’m sharing some of the imagery that’s inspired the look and feel we’re envisioning for our ceremony, with the hope that it can help some future elopees feel less alone in the world of traditional weddings. A few of these are from traditional weddings rather than elopements and a few are from styled shoots, but I have also been pinning more elopement specific ideas that you can browse through on my Pinterest boards Over the sea to Skye and For Eloping.

One more thing I didn’t expect was for the planning process to bring Owen and I closer to each other instead of driving us apart, as wedding planning has a reputation for doing. I think it’s because it’s something we’re organizing on our own, for ourselves and no one else, that wedding planning has been more of a bonding activity than a painstaking equation of friends, relatives, bridesmaids, vendors, visas and budgets. Ours is a long distance relationship. That’s how it’s been for almost four years now. Unlike the regular kind of relationship, ours doesn’t really involve anyone other than the two of us on either side of a screen or trying to make the most of our time together in person when Owen comes over. An elopement style wedding feels like a natural extension of who we are as a couple. It’s always been him and me, me and him. This is for us, and us alone.
We’d originally been thinking of eloping to the Isle of Skye or the Highlands (hence the Pinterest board!) but then we came across our venue in the Scottish Borders and fell in love with it instantly. Some of the elopement inspiration photos in this post have actually been shot at our venue by our photographer, can you guess which ones? I’m going to hold on to the specifics for a while longer, because it’s our very own not-so-secret-anymore personal project after all - but in the meantime you can expect a wedding related post or two as we make our way through the next six months! And can I just say...ohmygosh I’m so excited!

A Whimsy-Filled Watercolor Ranch Wedding
When it got right down to it, Jessica and Jeffrey wanted to treat their favorite people to an amazing celebration. They opted to keep the guest list small and make sure there was never a dull moment throughout their whimsical, fairytale-inspired outdoor wedding. With CCL Weddings by their side, they accomplished just that with every watercolor kissed moment captured by The Great Romance Photo.

From the Bride… Jeff and I met through a good mutual friend of ours back in 2012 at Backstage Bar in Culver City. It was an immediate attraction at first sight – I liked to talk, and he liked to listen! We both sat at a table chatting and getting to know one another. I must have been very excited because during one of my stories I accidentally spilled my drink on him…Jeffrey got up, without one word, and walked away. I thought 1) how embarrassing and 2) how rude! After a short while, he came back with another glass of ginger vodka .. and the rest was history.
I have always dreamed of having an outdoor whimsical fairytale style wedding. I knew from the get-go that if there was one thing I wanted, it was for everyone to be comfortable and entertained at all times. Over the years, you hear so many stories about how a ceremony would drag on for hours, or guests would sit next to complete strangers, or not having the chance to even say hi to the bride and groom – we knew we wanted to avoid all of that at all costs. Having this in mind inspired us to keep the guest list relatively small. We included comfy upholstered couches in the ceremony and reception. We also wanted to make sure there was something going on throughout the whole day so there was never a dull moment.
My favorite part of the day was seeing Jeffrey cry when he read his vows to me. He is a man who doesn’t show his soft side very often, so seeing him breakdown as he recited his vows was a very touching moment.
Our best advice to other couples is to HIRE A PLANNER. Wedding planning is already a very stressful ordeal, having a planner really helps guide you through the process. They will keep you on track and help put pen to paper your dream wedding. Also remember, pick your battles – compromise is a big part of planning. You are likely spending a large amount of money on your wedding – think about what matters to you the most and what you can go without. Either way, remember it will turn out beautiful!

John Carter Cash Weds Ana Cristina Cash, Johnny + June Remembered
Ana and John, you’ve officially raised the wedding bar for me. Not only because your love radiates like no other—but because every single inch of your sunny fall fete is woven with powerful meaning, and that’s what we live for here at Style Me Pretty. From the Lily of the Valley bouquet to the sweet infusion of musical talent and of course, the moments of beautiful remembrance. Perry Vaile captured it all with such heart, as she always does—soak in all the beauty here in The Vault.

From the Bride… John Carter and I happened to be in Los Angeles in July 2015, and I have friend who works at the Magic Castle, a private magicians club, who invited us to spend the evening there. What I didn’t know earlier, is that John had called my father over the phone and asked for his blessing first. When we arrived at the Magic Castle, John had to think quickly on his feet and coordinate the proposal with management without looking suspicious. They suggested that a magician by the name of “Jimmy H” do the honors of helping with the proposal. Jimmy H offered to do a few tricks for us in the upstairs area of the castle. He started by holding a deck of cards face down and asking each of us to each pick one randomly and had us sign our names on them with a sharpie. I got the Ace of Diamonds and John got the queen of spades. Then he had us merge our cards together with each others hands and magically turned the two separate cards into one card. Then, for a second trick, Jimmy H started waving his hands back and forth and in what was seemingly out of thin air, made a diamond ring appear! He handed it to John who got down on his knees and asked: “Will you Marry me?” …I was crying with happiness and excitement and of course said “Yes.”
For the ceremony at The French Huguenot Church, my niece Sabrina sang “Ave Maria” while my niece Gabriella played the violin and my other niece Abigail played the cello. John and I love to watch the show “Outlander” so we chose for my nieces to play “The Skye Boat Song” that is featured on the show on strings at the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, John had surprised me by having Scottish bag pipe players play a special arranged version of “The Skye Boat Song” outside of the church. Prior to my wedding, I had a dream of bagpipes playing outside the church, but I have never told anyone, not even John. It was so beautiful.
We had three of 1950’s vintage school buses in the colors of coral, mint and cream that transported all of our guests from the French Huguenot Church in downtown Charleston to Middleton Place, where the reception was held. I arrived the the church with my father in a vintage white car from the late 1930s, John and I took that same car to go to the reception together. For our getaway car, we let in a mint 1950s Chevy Bel Air. All of the vehicles were provided by Low Country Valet in Charleston. Having these vehicles as a part of your special day made us feel like we were in a different era.
For the ceremony, I chose to carry a delicate lily of the valley bouquet. That was one of the things I really wanted. I chose it because they symbolize purity, humility, and the “return of happiness.” We had a good 30 minutes of the reception where we had the MC play some of my favorite Latin music, lots of it Cuban music which was a nod to my heritage. The majority of the entertainment at the reception was provided by The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra of Savannah , who also sang a beautiful rendition of John’s father’s song “Ring of Fire” which was written by his mother, June Carter Cash. Earlier during the cocktail hour of the octagonal garden at Middleton Place, a string quartet provided by Charleston Virtuosi entertained the guests under the Spanish moss filled oaks. Our signature drink was the “Ring Of Fire Mojito” which was a nod to both of our families. It was a mojito with mango nectar and had a rim of cherry pop rocks.
Since John has a special affinity and passion for collecting honey, our wedding favors were whipped honey by Savannah Bee Company. His grooms cake was also a honey bear that was playing the guitar next to a tree trunk with our initials and wedding date carved at the top of it. It was chocolate and had honey buttercream filling in it.
Since it was a fall wedding, I chose a deep dark cabernet for my bridesmaids dresses. We wanted our wedding to have an elegant and timeless feel. Our event planner, Ashley Rhodes of Ashley Rhodes Event Designs did an amazing job of executing mine an John’s vision for wedding. The bridesmaids flowers as well as the flowers on the reception tables had white, pink, and hints of cabernet to go along with the theme. There were lots of gold elements interspersed throughout our reception. From the large gold and crystal chandeliers hanging from our sailcloth reception tent, to the gold napoleon chairs and vases holding the centerpieces. We had three different kinds of textured and metallic linens in blush tones and ivory. Our wedding cake, designed by Minette Rushing of Savannah Custom cakes was four tiers with sugar flowers and had our gold custom made wedding monogram on it which was designed by Emily McCarthy. Our custom monogram was also on our wedding invitations, ceremony programs and napkins. Our wedding cake had alternating layers of red velvet and white chocolate raspberry for each tier. It also had a design that mimicked the church windows that were also featured on the wedding invitation at the bottom of it in white.
I wore my sisters wedding tiara as my something borrowed, the inside of my shoes were blue, as well as the garter I was wearing which was ivory satin with a blue ribbon (for my something blue) ,for my something old, I clipped a turquoise costume ring that was John’s mothers to the inside of my dress for good luck, and my diamond cross necklace was my something new. We had a “family table” that displayed various custom framed photos of mine and John’s parents at their respective weddings , including photos of our grandparents .
We had several favorite moments during our wedding. A few of the biggest ones were when we said our vows and when they pronounced us as man and wife. Another big one was when John and I were finally able to perform our choreographed first dance during our reception. We had been taking ballroom dancing for several months and we did a medley of Ella Fitzgerald and Lou Armstrong’s “The Nearness Of You” and the song “Hell” from The Squirrel Nut Zippers which holds a fun and special meaning to us. The dance incorporated Rumba, Swing and Tango moves. We also really enjoyed our sparkler send off at the end of our reception and getting into the mint colored 1950’s Chevy Bel Air get away car provided by Low Country Valet which had a beautiful “Just Married” sign on it created by Jessica Peddicord of Simply Jessica Marie.
Some advice for other brides and grooms… It is so important to actually take the time to enjoy and soak everything in on your actual wedding day, because it goes by so incredibly fast. I would also advise wearing comfortable shoes for both ceremony and reception. Usually, the ceremony requires the couple to stand for a certain amount of time so it is important to be comfortable. John and I also each chose to purchase a perfume and cologne that we had never worn before until our wedding day. I wore ‘Empressa’ from Penhaligons and he wore ‘Quercus’ also from Penhaligons. We plan to wear theses scents again on anniversaries so that we can remember our wedding day.
“… You’d know I need you every day that rolls around / Your feet would walk on velvet with gold all over the ground. / Your trails would be downhill, a soft breeze at your back / your skies full of diamonds / your nights would not be black. / Yes you would really love it, then if you’re ever down / I’d give you rows of roses – And gold all over the ground. / I pick you up and carry you ‘cross every stream I see. I’d bundle you in kindness until you cling to me. We’d sit beneath strong branches, my arms would twine around …” – Johnny Cash
