English History (Part 4): Bronze Age

Bronze Age (2500 – 800 BC)

Around 2200 BC, the first stone circle was created at Stonehenge. This change from wood to stone may have been part of a great cultural movement, one that resulted in the building of monumental enclosures in other sites; the decline of ancestor worship; and bouts of warfare between opposing groups.

The bodies of two adults (male and female) and two children have been found in a single grave in Peterborough. In Dorset, several bodies were found lying in a ditch, with a rampart fallen on top of them. One of them had been killed by an arrow.

The construction of Stonehenge was the largest program of public works in the history of England, and the most drawn-out. The stone circle built in 2200 BC was a series of bluestones, mostly igneous in origin, and considered to have magical healing properties.

Around 2100 BC, the bluestones were taken down and replaced by 30 sarsen stones, in a circle around five pairs of trilithons, which were themselves arranged in a horseshoe pattern. At around the same time, a wooden henge (a circular monument) of 24 obelisks was built less than 800m away from the stone circle. This may have been a burial centre or the site of some other ritual activity.

Bluestonehenge (another henge & stone circle) was built 1.6km to the south-east, along the bank of the Avon River. A large village was built, less than 3.2km away – this may have been a ritual centre, a place of healing, a lodging for pilgrims, or a home for those who set up the sarsen stones. Clearly Salisbury Plain was the site of communal and spiritual settlement on a very large scale.

Also around 2100 BC, the Amesbury Archer was buried. He is also called the “king of Stonehenge”. His grave contained over 100 artifacts, including gold ornaments, copper knives, boar tusks and pots. His body was crouched in a foetal position, and flint arrowheads were scattered over him.

The Amesbury Archer would have been a tribal chieftain, but oxygen isotope analysis has shown that he grew up in the colder regions of Northern Europe. It is not known why a foreign king was buried on Salisbury Plain. His body shows evidence of an abscess and a painful bone infection. He may have been on pilgrimage, or he may have crossed the sea to be healed. Or he may have ruled here as one of the tribal chieftains who were not necessarily confined to one region (as there were no countries or nations as we have now).

Stonehenge's last construction phase was around 1600 BC. Two circles of standing stones were planned, but only the pits/holes were dug for them. So the structure of Stonehenge has changed over 1,200 years, and possibly its purpose as well. It may have been a burial ground, a site of public ceremonial and ritual, a centre of pilgrimage and ritual healing, a great observatory and celestial clock. We do not know.

However, in all of these ears, Stonehenge is evidence of a controlling power that could organize many people in this project. There was a hierarchical society with an elite group at the top (tribal or priestly) that could force or persuade thousands of people into building Stonehenge (and other ritual sites). Stonehenge would have taken millions of hours of labour. The bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales, about 320km away. Land, material resources and labour were governed by some form of central control.

It is possible that during the 1,200 years of Stonehenge's construction phases, communal burials were being replaced by individual burials – the Amesbury Archer is one example. In some graves, the chieftain's body is accompanied by weapons; in others, the body is surrounded by goods. These would have been the graves of leaders and high priests, often buried with their immediate families. England had become an aristocratic society, rather than a tribal one.

The Bronze Age cultivation of the landscape can still be seen, especially from the air. The banks & ditches of hundreds of rectangular fields can be seen. They were photographed from the air for the first time in 1929, and a lost world was revealed.

The uplands and downlands of southern Britain were laid out in fields, with hedges and stone walls stretching for miles. Among these ditched fields were drove-ways and waterholes. Central planning would have been essential for this level of land planning. Thousands of square miles of land were laid out in this way.

This intense cultivation is the strongest evidence for a steady population increase. By 1900 BC (600yrs into the Bronze Age) there were perhaps a million people, and when Julius Caesar invaded in 55 BC (near the end of the Iron Age), there were over 2 million people.

England was an agricultural society, with regional variations. The cultivated land has continued to be used as productive arable land ever since. Woodland was cleared, and pastureland was created with grass. There were more sheep than there would be in 1600 AD. There was little monumental construction – working the land was now a more important activity.

There were settlements everywhere, most of them situated away from the monumental sites. Single households and small hamlets were common. Enclosures were surrounded by a fence or ditch. Hut circles were groups of round stone houses with beehive roofs. People who lived there burned peat, and the hut circles included farmyards (or perhaps they were nearby?)

The Bronze Age people buried their dead in family units, cremating the bodies and placing the ashes in decorated urns. The cemeteries of the Late Bronze Age (from c. 1300 BC) are known as urn fields.

Men wore a tunic known as a “kirtle”, with a woollen cloak above it. Women wore a tunic and jacket, also covered by a woollen cloak. Their shoes were made of skin, and the men wore woollen caps. Higher-status women wore elaborate jet necklaces. One grave has evidence of a woman who had a concealed pad to bolster her hair. Higher-status men and women wore gold & bronze ornaments, and blue beads imported from Egypt. They also imported amber jewellery from the Baltic region. There was quite a lot of international trade in Bronze Age England.

The people ate soups, stews and dressed meat; and a type of porridge made of wheat, barley and oats. Alcoholic drinks such as beer and wine were an important part of their diet. They also ate hazelnuts, herbs, seaweed, and varieties of berries.

The focus of ceremony & worship shifted from the sky to the earth. The cultivation & increased use of the land would have increased the importance & significance of fertility rituals. Specific attention was given to water and watery places, including rivers, springs, marshes and fens.

Bronze Age weapons & other artifacts have been found in the Thames. The offerings of weapons, ornaments and bones were kept separate and distinct. At Eton, there are many skulls, but no metal. Tools were left in dry locations, and weapons in wet locations. Wooden platforms & causeways were built beside the river – they were part of the sacred space in which the peoples' priests dwelled.

Burial mounds and henge monuments have been located by rivers throughout prehistory. 368 Neolithic axes have been found in the Thames. The Bronze Age river offerings may have been part of a rite to gain the favour of the dead, i.e. part of ancestor worship. If the dead were believed to cross between the world of the living and the world of the dead, they would have a particular affinity with the river – the river would give access to the underworld though many passages, and it springs fresh and renewed froms its source.

During the Bronze Age, the weather was growing cooler and wetter.

Weapons have been found all over England – spearheads, socketed axes, rapiers, and (at a slightly later date) swords. Stirrups have been found; there is evidence of harnesses and bronze fittings for horses. There were chariots as well – traces of wheel ruts have been found at Peterborough that would have supported a vehicle with a width of one metre.

The evidence points to a warrior aristocracy, in a kingdom or group of sub-kingdoms stretching from Dorset to Sussex. The middle & late Bronze Age is roughly contemporaneous with the culture of Homer's Troy, with the same focus on kings & warriors, feasting and ritual battle. It would have been a warrior society with small-scale sporadic fighting between elites, gift exchanges between leaders, and tribute (in the form of food) from the subject population. This would have been one of the reasons why the land was farmed so extensively.

Defended settlements were found everywhere, as well as other enclosures that contained buildings. These were the prototypes for the Iron Age hill forts of southern England. In Dorset, a fence made out of great tree trunks was built around an area of 11 acres (4.4 hectares). It was set in a trench about 3 metres deep.

Strong regional identities & divisions were already being formed. The Thames Valley had access to the European mainland, which gave it an advantage in trade. This helped the region to eclipse the agricultural wealth of the Salisbury Plain. Northern England was focused on stock-raising, whereas southern England focused on cereal production. Trade encouraged interdependence between regions.

Commerce of all kinds was increasing, and this was very important. Trade leads to the growth of civilizations; it enables wars; it encourages technological growth; it creates towns & cities. Some types of swords were manufactured in western France, and ended up in eastern England. Also imported to England were highly-embellished barbecue spits from Spain, metalwork from Mycenae in Greece, and gold ornaments from Ireland.

In turn, England exported linen, woollen fabrics, slaves and hunting dogs to Europe. Children worked in Cornwall's tin mines, using bones and hammer-stones to dig out the ore. The metal was then sent to England's coastal ports for shipment to the continent.

When tin is added to molten copper, bronze is formed. The new technology changed everything, from cutting down forests to building houses to fighting. There were even bronze razors, with oil used as a lubricant for shaving.

Many Bronze Age settlements & cemeteries used the same sites as the Neolithic Period, and Bronze Age settlements were continuously in use throughout the Irone Age. The Iron Age people consistently respected the burial mounds and boundary lines of those who had come before them.

Instead of programming the obligatory ‘Hello World‘ command button application, I decided to step a little bit further and implemented the prototype of an URDF model designer. URDF is a simple XML format used to describe the visual aspects, kinematics and physics of rigid body robots. URDF is part of the open source robotics operating system ROS and is understood by the 3D simulation tool RVIZ.

Robots are defined in a simplified domain specific language from which appropriate XML files are generated automatically. A WebGl renderer displays the currently edited robot in a small window. Anyway it was a challenging fun project and helped me to learn more about Theia’s core concepts.

The illustration below shows the overall application architecture. The source code together with a sample workspace is available on github.

The application basically consists of two components:

A Spring Boot based server that comprises the language server and URDF endpoints

A single Theia extension that provides language support and the preview control

Hello, I am using Cobol Plugin for eclipse and I am facing some problems using it. Cobol Plug-in seems to be plugged with Fujitsu NetCobol Compiler by default. 1st question : Is it possible to plug this plug-in with another compiler (freeware!)? 2nd question : If i want to only use the editor part not the compiler, is it possible to remove the link with the building process. 3rd question : I do not have Fujitsu NetCobol Compiler with my plug-in of course and there is a side-effect which is a problem to me. A thread tries to build the project at some regular intervals and erase the console output systematically before logging build output message. All the previously logged messages are lost ;((( Example of build output : Project TEST build started at 27 novembre 2009 12:12:45 Project TEST build finished at 27 novembre 2009 12:12:45 -------------------------------------------------- Last question : Would not it be possible to introduce a specific console for buildind process? Hello cdsosi, Thank you for using COBOL Plugin. I will answer your question. 1. As you mentioned, the COBOL Plugin is originally designed to use FUJITSU NetCOBOL compiler. If you want to switch the compiler to OpenCOBOL or some sort of free COBOL, you can modify the plugin. But I know it is not easy and requires much time to improve it so that even we have not provide the function. If you are interested in developing COBOL Plugin, will you join us and contribute this? 2. The instructions below may be the help. Hello Tetsuya, Thanks for answering too! 1. I do not have much time to go deep inside the COBOL Plugin especially if you say that it is not easy part but maybe later and same remark for joining and contributing 2. Thanks for the checkbox state to disable on the Project Properties. I had not seen that. I went to the Window > Preferences > COBOL menu and in the COBOL Settings area there is a checkbox FUJITSU NetCOBOL that is 'uncheckable' (I thought it was the way to disable building process...) 3. ok 4. I 'll try to be more explicit!! Because of problem mentioned in 3 i thought it could be a solution to introduce a specific view (named 'COBOL Console ' for instance) in eclipse to log messages from COBOL Plugin building process. Specific consoles are often available in eclipse for CVS, Tomcat, ... In fact it seems that it is not a problem and that a specific console is already available for COBOL building process!! In the 'Display Selected Console' it was the COBOL Build Process that is selected by default. Other messages can be viewed by selecting other console... Sorry about that. However, I think there is another little problem that you should be interested in knowing (when the Project > Properties > Builders > COBOL Builder is checked ). I am developping a plugin under eclipse and have several projects in my workspace (Java, Java Plugin, COBOL). When I debug my plugin by launching a second eclipse runtime instance (Debug As Eclipse Application in other words!) the COBOL building process is launched many times (13 times, the build messages are displayed and erased ~ 13 times) althought the COBOL project has no modification inside. Building Devops pipelines with opensource tools

DevOps has become the default answer to fixing software development processes that are slow, siloed, or otherwise dysfunctional. But that doesn't mean very much when you're new to DevOps and aren't sure where to begin. This article explores what a DevOps pipeline is and offers a five-step process to create one. While this tutorial is not comprehensive, it should give you a foundation to start on and expand later.

A table at the back of the book shows how often different companies deploy to the release environment:

How are the frequency rates of Amazon, Google, and Netflix even possible? It's because these companies have figured out how to make a nearly perfect DevOps pipeline.

A brief introduction to DevOps and the CI/CD pipeline

If you ask several people, "What is DevOps? you'll probably get several different answers. DevOps, like agile, has evolved to encompass many different disciplines, but most people will agree on a few things: DevOps is a software development practice or a software development lifecycle (SDLC) and its central tenet is cultural change, where developers and non-developers all breathe in an environment where formerly manual things are automated; everyone does what they are best at; the number of deployments per period increases; throughput increases; and flexibility improves.

While having the right software tools is not the only thing you need to achieve a DevOps environment, some tools are necessary. A key one is continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD). This pipeline is where the environments have different stages (e.g., DEV, INT, TST, QA, UAT, STG, PROD), manual things are automated, and developers can achieve high-quality code, flexibility, and numerous deployments.

This article describes a five-step approach to creating a DevOps pipeline, like the one in the following diagram, using open source tools.

Without further ado, let's get started.

Step 1: CI/CD framework

The first thing you need is a CI/CD tool. Jenkins, an open source, Java-based CI/CD tool based on the MIT License, is the tool that popularized the DevOps movement and has become the de facto standard.

So, what is Jenkins? Imagine it as some sort of a magical universal remote control that can talk to many many different services and tools and orchestrate them. On its own, a CI/CD tool like Jenkins is useless, but it becomes more powerful as it plugs into different tools and services.

Jenkins is just one of many open source CI/CD tools that you can leverage to build a DevOps pipeline.

Here's what a DevOps process looks like with a CI/CD tool.

You have a CI/CD tool running in your localhost, but there is not much you can do at the moment. Let's follow the next step of DevOps journey.

Step 2: Source control management

The best (and probably the easiest) way to verify that your CI/CD tool can perform some magic is by integrating with a source control management (SCM) tool. Why do you need source control? Suppose you are developing an application. Whenever you build an application, you are programming—whether you are using Java, Python, C++, Go, Ruby, JavaScript, or any of the gazillion programming languages out there. The programming codes you write are called source codes. In the beginning, especially when you are working alone, it's probably OK to put everything in your local directory. But when the project gets bigger and you invite others to collaborate, you need a way to avoid merge conflicts while effectively sharing the code modifications. You also need a way to recover a previous version—and the process of making a backup and copying-and-pasting gets old. You (and your teammates) want something better.

This is where SCM becomes almost a necessity. A SCM tool helps by storing your code in repositories, versioning your code, and coordinating among project members.

Although there are many SCM tools out there, Git is the standard and rightly so. I highly recommend using Git, but there are other open source options if you prefer.

Here's what the DevOps pipeline looks like with the addition of SCM.

The CI/CD tool can automate the tasks of checking in and checking out source code and collaborating across members. Not bad? But how can you make this into a working application so billions of people can use and appreciate it?

Step 3: Build automation tool

Excellent! You can check out the code and commit your changes to the source control, and you can invite your friends to collaborate on the source control development. But you haven't yet built an application. To make it a web application, it has to be compiled and put into a deployable package format or run as an executable. (Note that an interpreted programming language like JavaScript or PHP doesn't need to be compiled.)

Enter the build automation tool. No matter which build tool you decide to use, all build automation tools have a shared goal: to build the source code into some desired format and to automate the task of cleaning, compiling, testing, and deploying to a certain location. The build tools will differ depending on your programming language, but here are some common open source options to consider.

Awesome! You can put your build automation tool configuration files into your source control management and let your CI/CD tool build it.

Everything is good, right? But where can you deploy it?

Step 4: Web application server

So far, you have a packaged file that might be executable or deployable. For any application to be truly useful, it has to provide some kind of a service or an interface, but you need a vessel to host your application.

For a web application, a web application server is that vessel. An application server offers an environment where the programming logic inside the deployable package can be detected, render the interface, and offer the web services by opening sockets to the outside world. You need an HTTP server as well as some other environment (like a virtual machine) to install your application server. For now, let's assume you will learn about this along the way (although I will discuss containers below).

There are a number of open source web application servers available.

Now the DevOps pipeline is almost usable. Good job!

Although it's possible to stop here and integrate further on your own, code quality is an important thing for an application developer to be concerned about.

Step 5: Code testing coverage

Implementing code test pieces can be another cumbersome requirement, but developers need to catch any errors in an application early on and improve the code quality to ensure end users are satisfied. Luckily, there are many open source tools available to test your code and suggest ways to improve its quality. Even better, most CI/CD tools can plug into these tools and automate the process.

There are two parts to code testing: code testing frameworks that help write and run the tests, and code quality suggestion tools that help improve code quality.

Note that most of the tools and frameworks mentioned above are written for Java, Python, and JavaScript, since C++ and C# are proprietary programming languages (although GCC is open source).

Now that you've implemented code testing coverage tools, your DevOps pipeline should resemble the DevOps pipeline diagram shown at the beginning of this tutorial.

Optional steps

Containers

As I mentioned above, you can host your application server on a virtual machine or a server, but containers are a popular solution.

What are containers? The short explanation is that a VM needs the huge footprint of an operating system, which overwhelms the application size, while a container just needs a few libraries and configurations to run the application. There are clearly still important uses for a VM, but a container is a lightweight solution for hosting an application, including an application server.

Although there are other options for containers, Docker and Kubernetes are the most popular.

Middleware automation tools

Our DevOps pipeline mostly focused on collaboratively building and deploying an application, but there are many other things you can do with DevOps tools. One of them is leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, which are also known as middleware automation tools. These tools help automate the installation, management, and other tasks for middleware software. For example, an automation tool can pull applications, like a web application server, database, and monitoring tool, with the right configurations and deploy them to the application server.

Vulnerabilities come in many shapes and sizes and they occur because fundamentally, computers are hard. Hard to program, hard to understand and even harder to debug.

In this activity we are asking you to look programs and trying to discover the vulnerabilities.

Since not everyone needs to know how to program study this course, we start with the original 'program' - a cooking recipe!

In many ways following a recipe is like running a program, so first we will discover 'vulnerabilities' in our recipes, then for those who are familiar with programming, can try to find the vulnerabilities in a few programs.

Bitcoin Cash Payment API Gateway.cash Adds a Variety of New Features

Last October, news.Bitcoin.com reported on a new Bitcoin Cash (BCH) payment processor called Gateway.cash. Since then the Gateway developers have added a variety of features to the BCH platform like instant web-sockets, custom audio, and client-side callbacks for real-time applications.

After the Bitcoin Cash split, the Money Button and Yours.org creator Ryan X Charles told his Twitter followers his apps would be following the BSV network. Four days later on Twitter, Charles said: “I look forward to seeing the ABC competitors to Yours and Money Button — Best of luck to you all.” Not too long after the post, a new Bitcoin Cash blogging website was launched called Honest Cash and the payment processor Gateway responded to Charle’s tweet.

“Hi, Gateway.cash will be a Money Button competitor for Bitcoin Cash and is now released open-source — The project is led by Ty Everett and he is looking for contributors,” the Gateway organization stated responding to Charles on Nov. 19.

New API Enhancements

Since the Gateway bitcoin cash-powered payment button and the processing application launched, the developer has added a slew of new features to the application program interface (API). Added enhancements include callback URLs, native currencies, custom audio sounds, client-side callbacks for real-time applications, instant web-socket payments, direct deposit to an address, and more. The Gateway developers have also published specifications for the Gateway.cash API which gives platform examples, useful descriptions and annotations. The documentation explains that the API can be hosted over HTTP or HTTPS with the user’s current URL as the basepoint. The website’s API documentation is quite extensive with examples shown on the right side of the screen and the Gateway API specifications page welcoming the user by stating:

Welcome to the Gateway.cash API — You can use our API to create and manage merchant accounts, make and receive Bitcoin Cash payments, keep track of invoices and more.

Open Source Community Pitches In

When news.Bitcoin.com first reviewed Gateway back in October, the button feature worked well and also offered a QR code so any wallet could pay the button. In contrast to the Money Button, there were no issues using the Safari browser as the application worked well in every browser tested. With the latest developments, the Gateway team and lead programmer Ty Everett have been offering the community bounties so the open-source community can contribute to the Gateway project.

Other well known developers have been helping the Gateway project like the BCH programmer Ftrader and Flowee the Hub have given the Github repository some assistance. “The first PR by a community member has been merged,” detailed the Gateway team. “Big thanks to Flowee the Hub for being the first contributor to Gateway.”

The Gateway project has explained on social media channels and forums that the developers are extremely grateful to the Bitcoin Cash development community.

“Thank you for contributing — Open-source is the future of software and Bitcoin Cash is the future of money,” the Gateway project explained on Twitter.
