We trust firms to handle our private information with the utmost care and respect for privacy…but what happens when that is not the case? Privacy International, a UK advocacy group, shared a report this week which detailed period and fertility tracking apps, most notably Maya and MIA, have been sharing a wide range of highly personal and sensitive information with, of course, Facebook…

Millions of women around the world have embraced these apps to help track their menstrual cycles and monthly fertility windows. For the app to provide the most accurate results for its user, it relies on women to input a wide variety of personal data including, daily mood, sexual activity, contraception usage, and symptoms such as tiredness and even acne breakouts. Thanks to Facebook’s Software Development Kits (SDK), a product which allows app developers to track analytics and monetize their apps through Facebook’s advertising networks, the information inputted by its female customers was shared directly with the social media juggernaut for strategically ad targeting. The major criticism lies in the fact these apps were not forthcoming with their use of the SDK and certain customer information was shared with Facebook before users even had an opportunity to review and agree to the apps “terms and conditions.”

Once again, the world’s largest social media platform with 1.2 billion daily users, finds itself in the middle of a user privacy debacle. After last year’s Cambridge Analytics scandal along with other accounts of misinformation, allowance of fake accounts, and consumer breaches of trust, Facebook has attempted to take steps in better protecting its users’ data. In a statement responding to the Privacy International report Facebook offered:

Its terms of service prohibit app developers from sharing health or sensitive data, and that it has been in contact with Maya and MIA to notify them of a possible violation of those terms. We have systems in place to detect and delete certain types of data such as SSN, passwords, and other types of personal data. We have begun looking at ways to improve our system and products to detect and filter out more potentially sensitive data…

With apps not being held to the same standards as the health care industry in terms of patient/user privacy, serious concerns have been raised over who ultimately has access to this type of data and the oversight of properly securing it.

It’s not just advertisers who’d love to get their hands on this type of medical data, but employers and insurance companies have aggressively pushed to collect more and more data on their employees under the guise of corporate wellness. Imagine if a potential employer had access to medical information for job candidate which confirmed she was actively trying to get pregnant, how many firms would not hire her to avoid the complexities of having an employee on maternity leave within her first year at the firm…? Access to this type of data would allow insurance companies to discriminate against certain women by charging higher premiums for those most likely to conceive to offset the costs associated with pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum care.

Customers have placed trust in apps like Maya and MIA with their personal health information and fully expected it to be protected and secured. In today’s data-driven society, firms go through great length to collect all available data on their customers to gain awareness and achieve a competitive advantage. Is it even reasonable for consumers to have expectations of privacy or do companies need to step up their data discretion game and start showing more respect towards their customers?

Ladies, if data sharing like this have you seriously concerned there’s nothing wrong with an old school calendar stored in your nightstand to help you keep track of your personal business…just sayin’.

Cryptic-Crypto

Libra is a permissioned blockchain digital currency proposed by the American social media company Facebook.

The currency and network do not yet exist, and only rudimentary experimental code has been released. The launch is planned to be in 2020.

The project, currency and transactions are to be managed and cryptographically entrusted to the Libra Association, a membership organization of companies from payment, technology, telecommunication, online marketplace and venture capital, and non-profits.

The Libra currency is built on the “Libra Blockchain.” Because it is intended to address a global audience, the software that implements the Libra Blockchain is open source — designed so that anyone can build on it, and billions of people can depend on it for their financial needs.

The unit of currency is called “Libra.” Libra will need to be accepted in many places and easy to access for those who want to use it. In other words, people need to have confidence that they can use Libra and that its value will remain relatively stable over time. Unlike the majority of cryptocurrencies, Libra is fully backed by a reserve of real assets.

Libra will not rely on cryptocurrency mining. Only members of the Libra Association will be able to process transactions via the permissioned blockchain.

Libra hopes to begin transitioning to a permissionless proof-of-stake system within five years; although their own materials admit that no solution exists "that can deliver the scale, stability, and security needed to support billions of people and transactions across the globe through a permissionless network.

Libra's source code is written in Rust and published as open source under the Apache License with the launch on 18 June 2019.

Facebook plans to release a digital wallet called Calibra in 2020, made available in Messenger, WhatsApp, as well as in a standalone app.

Facebook teams played a key role in the creation of the Libra Association and the Libra Blockchain, working with the other Founding Members. While final decision-making authority rests with the association, Facebook is expected to maintain a leadership role through 2019. Facebook created Calibra, a regulated subsidiary, to ensure separation between social and financial data and to build and operate services on its behalf on top of the Libra network.

Once the Libra network launches, Facebook, and its affiliates, will have the same commitments, privileges, and financial obligations as any other Founding Member. As one member among many, Facebook’s role in governance of the association will be equal to that of its peers.

US regulators and politicians expressed concerns close on the mid-2019 announcement. Maxine Waters, Chairperson of the United States House Committee on Financial Services Committee asked Facebook to halt the development and launch of Libra, citing a list of recent scandals and that "the cryptocurrency market currently lacks a clear regulatory framework". The U.S. House Committee on Financial Services Democrats sent a letter to Facebook asking the company to stop development of Libra, citing concerns of privacy, national security, trading, and monetary policy.

Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, testified before Congress on 10 July that the Fed had "serious concerns" as to how Libra would deal with "money laundering, consumer protection and financial stability."

President Donald Trump tweeted on 12 July that "If Facebook and other companies want to become a bank, they must seek a new Banking Charter and become subject to all Banking Regulations."

US regulators contacted Visa, PayPal, Mastercard and Stripe, asking for a complete overview of how Libra would fit into their anti-money-laundering compliance programs.

Chairman Crapo asked if Facebook would collect data about transactions made with Calibra that are made on Facebook, such as when users buy products from businesses they discover through Facebook. Marcus instead merely noted that Facebook would still let users pay with credit cards and other mediums as well as Calibra. That means that even though Facebook might not know how much money is in someone’s Calibra wallet or their other transactions, it might know how much they paid and for what if that transaction happens over their social networks.

Libra is in a state that makes it seem impossible to reach the implementation phase. Your task will be split into two phases.

The Birthplace of Social Media

The definition and classification can although be controversial, in 2019 Merriam-Webster defined the term as "forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and micro-blogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)".

Social media has two large aspects under which it can be studied: the technological and the social. The technological developments and innovation help improve the connectivity while the user-based networking helps transfer different types of data. Users build profiles specific to the service provided by various platforms. It was designed with the idea of connecting a set of users to exchange data across predefined networks with maximum accuracy and quick transfer.

Social media is well on its way to snatch the title of “the fourth pillar of democracy” from the traditional forms of media like print or radio. The term “social media” and its popularity are largely due to the outburst of multiple social media platforms from the mid to late 2000s. Giants like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have dominated the industry for some time but platforms like Orkut, Reddit and Tumblr remain close to user’s hearts to this day.

The single objective of these platforms is to connect various people and businesses from various parts of the world. This has inevitably resulted in an untraceable amount of networks spreading over the whole world. With advancing technology to complement it, social media is getting bigger by the second only to morph into the next generation of advertisements.

Networks of the New Era

An enormous 3.2 billion internet users are active on social media, that’s a little over 42% of the entire world population. This makes it the biggest audience to any other form of media, ever. After the second quarter of 2019, Facebook report 2.414 billion monthly active users of which 303 million were from India.

But the most significant feature of social media as a new form of marketing is the increase in the number of consumers and as a result, promoters and products. With more individual influencers connecting with consumers online, social media has become an ideal place for big, medium, small brands and start-ups. With 81% of all small to medium businesses and 91% retail brands using a social media platform in some form of the other, the industry is headed nowhere but up!

The wide use of social media has actually also become a relief of sorts to the employment conditions where software and technology firms are hiring largely for social media platforms or other directly related businesses. Marketing Managers, Art Directors and Copywriters are all full-time and readily available jobs as a direct result of social media platforms and their popularity.

That being said, a “social media influencer” or “tweets about your day and Instagram stories with foodie pics” is not a career choice. One can most certainly try and make a career out of it, but not something that might be sustainable. However, saying that having the words “social media” in your job title implies your job is unimportant is simply misguided and can discourage people from entering into an emerging space that is ripe with opportunities.

Where are we headed?

The world of social media is complicated and hard to understand but in this day and age, knowing about the happenings of society is rather important and social media, as risky as it might be, is getting that job done. But the industry is not all flowers, it has had its fair amount of dips. The rise in the number of platforms has sparked debate of invasion of privacy, spreading hate speech and/or racism, government censorship, self-censorship by social media platforms and ownership of content.

The most recent case was the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal that revealed Cambridge Analytica (CA) collected personal data of millions of peoples' Facebook profiles without their consent and used it for political manipulation and advertising purposes.

Notably, CA was hired by the Indian National Congress (INC) to carry out "in-depth electorate analysis" and influence voters, including in the 2010 elections to the Bihar Legislative Assembly. 355 Indian Facebook users installed a Cambridge Analytica app, exposing the data of 562,455 users. In early 2018 Cambridge Analytica made a 50-page proposal for the INC for both the upcoming 2019 general election in India and their upcoming electoral campaign for the Indian states of Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh state elections in 2018.

Although the platforms and the overall workings maybe treacherous and uncertain, social media platforms have brought about better connectivity and a great deal of relief to millions with various campaigns all the from terrorism (“je suis charlie” for the attacks on the French newspaper offices of Charlie Hebdo in 2015), sexual assault cases (MeToo for awareness about sexual assault by encouraging survivors to share their stories) to civil movements (Black Lives Matter movement for an end to police brutality and the killings of African-Americans in the U.S).

The platforms, their impact and complexity have all been well studied and documented in recent years and is going through tremendous change even now. The rational step forward is to use these tools effectively and help find ways to help improve as many lives as possible.

Just short of the 10th anniversary of that first Mac Pro misstep, Apple is now late in concluding its processor transition by shipping the first Apple silicon-based Mac Pro. What’s worse, reports from Bloomberg suggest that the company has ditched the next Mac Pro’s highest-end processor, calling the computer’s entire purpose into question.

Given Apple’s new chip architecture with memory and processor built into the chip I have a difficult time defining what a pro machine should or would be. Maybe you have to accept a new definition? Maybe it doesn’t mean a flexible and expandable architecture?

What I’d like to see is Apple give the Professional computing world a way to use their current investment in Mac Pro a way to replace the x86 based Xeon chips with Apple Silicon. Of course Apple would never do such a thing because money. 💸

I follow a number of indie software developers and they tend to use Linode for their service backends. Two that come to mind are Micro.blog, the system I use for publishing my blog, and Overcast, the indie podcast app for iOS. I’m sure there are many more out there I don’t know about. I’ve never done any large scale backend work for my indie endeavors but if I did I’d most likely choose Linode because they’re inexpensive, reliable, and have great customer service.

Hopefully they don’t start hiking prices, laying off people, and becoming a terrible place to host. 🤞🏼

Spotify’s podcast push began in earnest in 2016, when Ek invited audio executives including higher ups at Gimlet to the company’s headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden to explain the emerging American podcast market.

Spotify calls their recorded audio podcasting. It’s not. Podcasting is the audio plus a delivery mechanism in the form of RSS. Yes, you can have a podcast as I’ve defined it behind a paywall. They just want to lock you into their app with their advertising and try to upsell you on other things. That’s fine. It’s their business but don’t call them podcasts. Ok, off the soap box. 📦

I was listening to the Pivot Podcast last night and Scott Galloway point out that very few podcasts make a profit. That’s true of what he defines as a podcast. Remember, this started as an open technology built by Dave Winer and Adam Curry. It was used and loved long before businessmen decided they could monetize it. Just like blogging. It’s was and still is a way for us mere mortals to communicate to the outside world, even if we’re not paid a dime to do it.

Oh, and I have a feeling some of the small podcasting shops are doing just fine, but they do things differently and have well loved shows. They’re just not exclusive to Spotify or Apple or whatever Big Co place you get your podcasts. They’re fully open and downloadable using your podcast player of choice because they’re built on top of RSS as the delivery mechanism.

The key phrase to listen for when you hear a podcast advertised is ”Download wherever you get your podcasts.” Then you know it’s a real podcast.

The hearing got incredibly creepy when Arkansas state Sen. Matt McKee asked a trans pharmacist if she had a penis. “Do you have a penis?” he asked the woman, who seemed stunned at the question.

Unbelievable. I wish we could get past this and so many other things. So many people want to control how others behave and how they live their life. Often times based on some form of religion they’ve twisted to support their hate, disdain, or jealously of others.

Let people live their lives. Show them respect and grace as fellow human beings. It’s not our job to tell folks how they should live. That goes for women, brown skinned people, and the LBGTQ+ community. ❤️

After half a decade of sedate, steady growth, Mastodon suddenly surged, from 600,000 daily users to 2.6 million in the space of months.

Some folks are already writing off Mastodon. Silly people. If you’re looking to get a huge following and interacting with movie stars, influencers, government officials, and the rich and famous, don’t expect that from Mastodon. It’s not built for that. It’s built like your everyday neighborhood for us commoners to engage in. It’s real people carrying on real discussions. Sure, there’s gonna be some hate but there are mechanisms in place to take care of that crap. I love it and I’m excited to see it grow. There’s no algorithm to encourage you to follow people or corporate master to satisfy and no need to grow to billions of users because of it.

It’s like blogging. It’s all open and up to us, everyday people, to keep it. ✌🏼

Joseph Heck

In the past couple of years, I’ve had the occasion to want to make an XCFramework – a bundle that’s used by Apple platforms to encapsulate binary frameworks or libraries – a couple of times.

I don’t know Joseph personally but I’ve interacted with him on the NetNewsWire Slack and Mastodon and he’s a really kind, thoughtful, selfless man. He’s given me feedback on Stream and Mac programming questions. All that to say he’s one of the good ones.

Anywho, this is a great piece on how he built an XCFramework with a Rust core. Rust has become the new, safe, language for creating highly performant software and being able to use it natively on iOS or Mac and integrate it right into Xcode is wonderful. 🧰

Jonas: I'm fine. How are you?

David: Before we dive into the topic. Let's talk a little bit about Platform.Sh. What is this company about?

Jonas: So Platform.Sh wants our customers to focus on what matters the most, we want them to thrive, we don't want them to think about you much about infrastructure. We want to facilitate a collaboration between between teams and developers, especially building

David: For the people out there, who are not so technical, They might know SAAS, Right? SAAS is likely the most commonly known one. But then there's also PAAS and IAAS, Yes. So, for these people could you explain a little bit. What is meant by the PAAS solution?

Jonas: When we talk about infrastructure for web applications, There are a lot of different options, Of course, on the market. Traditionally, even before infrastructure as a service or IAAS People would need on-premise infrastructure on-premise needs either their own data center or a renting space in a data center from someone else, but actually buying hardware, bringing in cables and everything infrastructure as a service like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud platform. But they provide basically an abstraction layer on top of that.

So instead of bringing physical hardware to the place, you can use Virtual computers in the

end. So you still get a computer from them. And you still have to do a lot of stuff on that computer, installing an operating system, making all the configuration, everything. But you don't need to worry about a disc that's erroring out, or something like that. You don't have to exchange that physically. Someone else's doing that for you, and on top of infrastructure providers infrastructure as a service providers, we as Platform.Sh being a platform as a service provider, we go even further in terms of the abstraction level don't need to worry about operating system updates about back up your data about the tiny little details That is, all the infrastructure sector configuration that you would need. And then you have software as a service provider where you don't have the flexibility to run your customers software, right? You need to be lying on what they provide and the options they give you on a PAAS. You can actually bring your own system and host it and have access to the data and have access to the source code and make changes to it, Whereas on the SAAS You probably don't have that possibility. So it's really about flexibility, abstraction, and not needing to worry about specifics.

David: Would you say, these are the reasons why I should use the paas? I mean, when we talk about this, the general question is, is this right for me or not? Is it then about the flexibility, or is there some other reason to own it?

Jonas: First of all, when running infrastructure is actually hard, I mean, there's a reason why there are so many companies who are specialized in that field. So it requires work, it requires people, it requires a lot of skills these days. Like I said, it's not getting less complex. and so complexity is a huge part of the topic and part of the decision. And the other one is, as you said, of course, flexibility and as well as agility. So I talked about collaboration and quick feedback in the beginning. For example, this is something that if it's integrated in your day-to-day workflow, and it is very flexible and not relying on a very static process, It actually makes you go faster. It brings you faster to the Market. And at the same time, you have the Ability to bring in people as needed, and don't need to worry too much about setting up everything. Let me tell you quickly how that works on Platform.Sh. So you get an idea of what this feels like in an actual project. Let's say you want to have a new website, or a new E-commerce system, or any kind of web application, and want to run it the way it works on Platform.Sh. But they don't have to work on them in a completely separated world. They would just create a new git branch. everything on Platform.Sh is actually based on git. So you create a new git branch in every git branch and it can be its own environment. Environment means basically, you get back a domain. A URL where you can make any changes, so you can push your new source code to it. Make changes, and you can send that to anybody involved stakeholders like QA teams, your product owner, or even customers, asking them for their feedback on the feature. And then you can integrate that feedback, Make a change, and tell them to check the site again, since it's a completely separate environment. You have all the features to do whatever you need to do. You can modify data. You don't need to worry about your production system, because that's still running. And at the same time, you can just share that domain. Right? So it's very fast to iterate over any changes. And then when you're done, you get the feedback. And you want to deploy that to your production set. That's also easy. And the production system makes sure it scales, together with the receiving growth that you have.

David: Let's say, I want a new feature that I would like to do. And I would like to see it fast and easy. What is the outcome? I want to compare different versions of its right And traditional development setting. This is, well, quite a cumbersome operation, or takes time.
