After weeks of action, the sole recruiters for the British operations of Israel’s largest weapons company, Elbit Systems, have confirmed via email to Palestine Action that they ended their association with Elbit on the evening of the 29th November. For two months, activists in the Palestine Action network had disrupted iO Associates at their premises across the country, to impede their ability to recruit roles for Israel’s war machine.  iO Associates recruited the likes of engineers, software developers, and finance staff for positions across the sites of the British branch of Israel’s largest weapons company, Elbit Systems. Elbit are the largest supplier to the occupation military, providing the vast majorities of its drones, munitions, surveillance gear, and parts for its tanks, jets, and precision missiles. From Britain specifically, they manufacture parts for Israel’s killer drones, along with weapons sights, tank parts, and more, exporting these technologies to Israel in great volume yearly. This is the nature of the business that IO was Associates with, and were IO Associates biggest client. In response to their facilitation of Elbit’s criminal activities, iO’s offices were stormed and occupied in Manchester on the 1st September, and again on the 7th October. Activists painted iO offices red on October 9th in London, Reading, and Manchester. They were forced to vacate their Manchester offices from the 11th October, after the premises were also stormed by the Youth Front For Palestine, and then finally targeted in Edinburgh twice, on the 11th and 17th October. After being forced to vacate their offices, having their online presence tarnished, and (as confirmed to us by former employees) losing their staff who resigned in opposition to their arms trade partnership, iO Associates have finally cut ties with Israel’s weapons trade.  This is part of an expansive strategy by Palestine Action, by disrupting the suppliers and facilitators of Elbit’s presence in Britain. It has seen Elbit’s accountants (Edwards), haulage providers (Kuehne + Nagel), landlords (JLL) and many other complicit companies targeted, alongside the hundreds of actions at Elbit sites themselves, continuing to resist the presence of Elbit warmongers in Britain, and constantly reminding those associated with them that they have blood on their hands. As a result of iO Associates dropping Elbit Systems, the recruiters have been removed as a target of Palestine Action’s campaign. All targets who still facilitate Israel’s weapons trade are listed on elbitsites.uk

Denis Ignatovich, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Imanda – Interview Series
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/denis-ignatovich-co-founder-and-co-ceo-of-imanda-interview-series/
Denis Ignatovich, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Imanda – Interview Series
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Denis Ignatovich, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Imandra, has over a decade of experience in trading, risk management, quantitative modeling, and complex trading system design. Before founding Imandra, he led the central risk trading desk at Deutsche Bank London, where he recognized the critical role AI can play in the financial sector. His insights during this time helped shape Imandra’s suite of financial products. Denis’ contributions to computational logic for financial trading platforms include several patents. He holds an MSc in Finance from the London School of Economics and degrees in Computer Science and Finance from UT Austin.
Imandra is an AI-powered reasoning engine that uses neurosymbolic AI to automate the verification and optimization of complex algorithms, particularly in financial trading and software systems. By combining symbolic reasoning with machine learning, it enhances safety, compliance, and efficiency, helping institutions reduce risk and improve transparency in AI-driven decision-making.
What inspired you and Dr. Grant Passmore to co-found Imandra, and how did your backgrounds influence the vision for the company?
After college I went into quantitative trading and ended up in London. Grant did his PhD in Edinburgh and then moved to Cambridge to work on applications of automated logical reasoning for analysis of safety of autopilot systems (complex algorithms which involve nonlinear computation). In my work, I also dealt with complex algorithms with lots of nonlinear computation and we realized that there’s a deep connection between those two fields. The way that finance was creating such algorithms was really problematic (as highlighted by many news stories dealing with “algo glitches”), so we set out to change that by empowering engineers in finance with automated logical tools to bring rigorous scientific techniques to the software design and development. However, what we ended up creating is industry-agnostic.
Can you explain what neurosymbolic AI is and how it differs from traditional AI approaches?
The field of AI has (very roughly!) two areas: statistical (which includes LLMs) and symbolic (aka automated reasoning). Statistical AI is incredible at identifying patterns and doing translation using information it learned from the data it was trained on. But, it is bad at logical reasoning. The symbolic AI is almost the exact opposite – it forces you to be very precise (mathematically) with what you’re trying to do, but it can use logic to reason in a way that is (1) logically consistent and (2) doesn’t require data for training. The techniques combining these two areas of AI are called “neurosymbolic”. One famous application of this approach is the AlphaFold project from DeepMind which recently won the Nobel prize.
What do you think sets Imandra apart in leading the neurosymbolic AI revolution?
There are many incredible symbolic reasoners out there (most in academia) that target specific niches (e.g. protein folding), but Imandra empowers developers to analyze algorithms with unprecedented automation which has much greater applications and greater target audiences than those tools.
How does Imandra’s automated reasoning eliminate common AI challenges, such as hallucinations, and improve trust in AI systems?
With our approach, LLMs are used to translate humans’ requests into formal logic which is then analyzed by the reasoning engine with full logical audit trail. While translation errors may occur when using the LLM, the user is provided with a logical explanation of how the inputs were translated and the logical audits may be verified by 3rd party open source software. Our ultimate goal is to bring actionable transparency, where the AI systems can explain their reasoning in a way that’s independently logically verifiable.
Imandra is used by Goldman Sachs and DARPA, among others. Can you share a real-world example of how your technology solved a complex problem?
A great public example of the real world impact of Imandra is highlighted in our UBS Future of Finance competition 1st place win (the details with Imandra code is on our website). While creating a case study for UBS that encoded a regulatory document that they submitted to the SEC, Imandra identified a fundamental and subtle flaw in the algorithm description. The flaw stemmed from subtle logical conditions that have to be met to rank orders inside an order book – something that would be impossible for humans to detect “by hand”. The bank awarded us 1st place (out of more than 620 companies globally).
How has your experience at Deutsche Bank shaped Imandra’s applications in financial systems, and what’s the most impactful use case you’ve seen so far?
At Deutsche Bank we dealt with a lot of very complex code that made automated trading decisions based on various ML inputs, risk indicators, etc. As any bank, we also had to abide by numerous regulations. What Grant and I realized was that this, on a mathematical level, was very similar to the research he was doing for autopilot safety.
Beyond finance, which industries do you see as having the greatest potential to benefit from neurosymbolic AI?
We’ve seen AlphaFold get the Nobel prize, so let’s definitely count that one… Ultimately, most applications of AI will greatly benefit by use of symbolic methods, but specifically, we’re working on the following agents that we will release soon: code analysis (translating source code into mathematical models), creating rigorous models from English-prose specifications, reasoning about SysML models (language used to describe systems in safety-critical industries) and business process automation.
Imandra’s region decomposition is a novel feature. Can you explain how it works and its significance in solving complex problems?
A question that every engineer thinks about when writing software is “what the edge cases?”. When their job is QA and they need to write unit test cases or they’re writing code and thinking about whether they’ve correctly implemented the requirements. Imandra brings scientific rigor to answer this question – it treats the code as a mathematical model and symbolically analyzes all of its edge cases (while producing a proof about the completeness of coverage). This feature is based on a mathematical technique called ‘Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition’, which we’ve “lifted” to algorithms at large. It has saved countless hours for our customers in finance and uncovered critical errors. Now we’re bringing this feature to engineers everywhere.
How does Imandra integrate with large language models, and what new capabilities does this unlock for generative AI?
LLMs and Imandra work together to formalize human input (whether it’s source code, English prose, etc), reason about it and then return the output in a way that’s easy to understand. We use agentic frameworks (e.g. Langgraph) to orchestrate this work and deliver the experience as an agent that our customers can use directly, or integrate into their applications or agents. This symbiotic workflow addresses many of the challenges of using LLM-only AI tools and extends their application beyond previously seen training data.
What is your long-term vision for Imandra, and how do you see it transforming AI applications across industries?
We think neurosymbolic techniques will be the foundation that paves the way for us to realize the promise of AI. Symbolic techniques are the missing ingredient for most of the industrial applications of AI and we’re excited to be at the forefront of this next chapter of AI.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit Imandra.

Measuring ROI in IT Recruitment: Beyond Cost-per-Hire Metrics
Tumblr media
Hey there, fellow entrepreneurs and business owners! Whether you're running a tech startup in London, a software development firm in New York, or an IT consultancy in Dubai, I bet you're all too familiar with the headache of recruiting top tech talent. And if you're anything like me, you've probably wondered if all that time, effort, and money you're pouring into recruitment is really paying off.
Well, grab a cup of coffee (or tea, if that's your thing), and let's dive into the world of measuring ROI in IT recruitment. Trust me, it's not as dry as it sounds, and it could be the game-changer your business needs.
The Old School: Cost-per-Hire and Why It's Not Enough
Okay, let's start with the basics. If you've been in business for a while, you've probably heard of the cost-per-hire metric. It's simple: you add up all your recruitment costs and divide by the number of hires. Voila! You've got your cost-per-hire.
But here's the thing – while cost-per-hire a developer is a useful metric, it's like trying to judge a book by its cover. Sure, it gives you a quick snapshot, but it doesn't tell the whole story.
Let me give you a real-world example. A friend of mine runs a fintech startup in Manchester. She was patting herself on the back for keeping her cost-per-hire low by using cheap job boards and handling recruitment in-house. Sounds great, right? Well, six months later, she was tearing her hair out because half of her new hires had already left, and the ones who stayed were underperforming. Turns out, cheap recruitment can be expensive in the long run.
So, what's a savvy business owner to do? Let's look at some metrics that really matter.
Quality of Hire: The Holy Grail of Recruitment ROI
If cost-per-hire is the cover of the book, quality of hire is the riveting story inside. This metric looks at how well your new hires are actually performing on the job.
1.1 Performance Ratings: More Than Just Numbers One way to measure quality of hire is through performance ratings. But don't just slap a number on it and call it a day. Get specific. Are your new developers shipping code faster? Are your IT support staff resolving tickets more efficiently?
A software company in Austin I worked with started tracking not just overall performance ratings, but specific metrics like code quality, project completion time, and peer reviews. They found that hires who came through employee referrals consistently outperformed those from other sources. This insight led them to beef up their referral program, resulting in better result in hiring a developer and better team cohesion.
1.2 Time to Productivity: Hit the Ground Running Another crucial aspect of quality of hire is how quickly your new tech whizzes get up to speed. In the fast-paced world of IT, you can't afford to have new hires twiddling their thumbs for months.
I know a cybersecurity firm in Tel Aviv that implemented a "30-60-90 day plan" for all new hires. They set specific goals for what each new employee should achieve in their first 30, 60, and 90 days. By tracking this, they could quickly identify which recruitment sources were delivering hires who could hit the ground running.
1.3 Cultural Fit: Because Skills Aren't Everything Here's something that often gets overlooked – cultural fit. In the world of IT, where collaboration and innovation are key, having team members who mesh well with your company culture can be just as important as their technical skills.
A tech consultancy in Edinburgh started including a "culture add" score in their quality of hire metric. They found that employees who scored high on this measure were more likely to stay with the company long-term and contribute innovative ideas. As a result, they adjusted their interview process to better assess cultural fit, leading to more cohesive teams and higher overall productivity.
Retention Rate: Because Hiring is Just the Beginning
Alright, so you've hired some top-notch tech talent. Job done, right? Not so fast. If your new hires are heading for the exit faster than you can say "Silicon Valley," all that recruitment effort goes down the drain.
2.1 First Year Retention: The Make-or-Break Period The first year is crucial. It's when your new hires are learning the ropes, integrating into the team, and deciding if your company is where they want to build their career.
A data analytics company in Chicago started closely tracking their first-year retention rate. They discovered that new hires who had a rocky onboarding experience were much more likely to leave within the first year. Armed with this insight, they overhauled their onboarding process, assigning mentors to each new hire and creating a comprehensive "welcome package" that outlined clear expectations and growth opportunities. The result? Their first-year retention rate shot up by 25%.
2.2 Long-Term Retention: Building a Stable Team While first-year retention is important, don't forget to look at the bigger picture. In the ever-changing world of IT, having a stable core team can be a major competitive advantage.
I know a cloud computing startup in Seattle that started tracking not just how long employees stayed, but why they left. They conducted thorough exit interviews and used the insights to make changes in their company culture and benefits package. One surprising finding? Many employees were leaving because they felt their skills were stagnating. The company responded by implementing a generous professional development program, and their long-term retention rates improved significantly.
2.3 Internal Mobility: Grow Your Own Talent Here's a retention metric that often gets overlooked – internal mobility. Are your tech employees able to grow and advance within your company, or are they leaving to find new challenges elsewhere?
A mobile app development company in London started tracking how many of their senior positions were filled by internal promotions versus external hires. They found that teams led by internally promoted managers had higher morale and better retention rates. This led them to create a robust internal training and promotion program, reducing their need for external hires and improving overall team stability.
Source of Hire: Not All Recruitment Channels Are Created Equal
Okay, last but not least, let's talk about where your best hires are coming from. This isn't just about which job board gives you the most applications – it's about which sources are delivering the highest quality hires who stick around and contribute to your company's success.
3.1 Quality by Source: Where Are Your Stars Coming From? Start by looking at the performance and retention rates of hires from different sources. Are your best developers coming from tech meetups? Are your most innovative project managers being poached from competitors?
A SaaS company in Toronto did a deep dive into their source of hire data and found that while LinkedIn was providing the most candidates, the highest performing hires were coming from industry-specific tech forums. They shifted their recruitment strategy to focus more on these niche platforms, resulting in higher quality hires and better team performance.
3.2 Cost-Effectiveness by Source: Bang for Your Buck Now, combine your source of hire data with your cost data. Which sources are giving you the best return on your recruitment investment?
An IT services company in Dubai was spending a fortune on a high-end recruitment agency but found that their most cost-effective hires were coming from employee referrals and local university partnerships. They reallocated their recruitment budget accordingly, saving money while improving the quality of their hires.
3.3 Time-to-Hire by Source: Speed Matters In the fast-paced world of IT, vacant positions can be costly. Look at which sources are delivering quality candidates the fastest.
A fintech startup in San Francisco found that while job boards were providing a steady stream of candidates, the interview-to-offer process was much faster for candidates from tech hackathons. They started sponsoring and attending more of these events, significantly reducing their time-to-hire for critical tech positions.
The Bottom Line: It's All About the Big Picture
Phew! We've covered a lot of ground, haven't we? The key takeaway here is that measuring ROI in IT recruitment isn't about any single metric – it's about looking at the big picture.
By going beyond the basic cost-per-hire and diving into quality of hire, retention rates, and source effectiveness, you'll get a much clearer picture of how your recruitment efforts are really paying off. And armed with these insights, you can make smarter decisions about where to invest your precious recruitment resources.
Remember, in the world of IT, your people are your most valuable asset. Investing the time to truly understand your recruitment ROI isn't just number-crunching – it's a strategic move that can give your business a serious competitive edge.
So, what do you think? Are you ready to take a deeper look at your IT recruitment ROI? Trust me, your future self (and your bottom line) will thank you. Now go out there and hire some tech superstars – and make sure you can prove it was worth every penny!
