One day I’ll wake up and someone in the Scottish government will have come to their senses and stopped the constant funding of all useless government quango organisations.
So much grant money has been poured into these groups and they’ve produced nothing in terms of commercial value.
Scottish start-ups struggle to get funding, these quangos make start-ups jump through ridiculous hoops for a mere £50K which isn’t covering a senior software developer’s salary.
And yet the Scottish government digital strategy is so heavily focused on ‘unicorns.’
“Oh, remember Skyscanner? We want another four Skyscanners to put Scotland on the map”
Just smoke and mirrors. If I was in charge of the business portfolio it’s the first thing that would get a complete overhaul.

Rats' brain waves could find trapped people
By Emily Singer
22 September 2004
Rats equipped with radios that transmit their brainwaves could soon be helping to locate earthquake survivors buried in the wreckage of collapsed buildings.
Rats have an exquisitely sensitive sense of smell and can crawl just about anywhere. This combination makes them ideal candidates for sniffing out buried survivors. For that, the animals need to be taught to home in on people, and they must also signal their position to rescuers on the surface.
In a project funded by DARPA, the Pentagon’s research arm, Linda and Ray Hermer-Vazquez of the University of Florida in Gainesville have worked out a way to achieve this.
... Signals from the rat’s brain will be relayed to a radio transmitter pack strapped to the animal’s back, which Chapin is developing. Rescuers will be able to follow the rat’s position by tracking these signals. They are also developing software that will recognise the “aha!” moment when the rat has found its target, so rescuers will know where to start digging. The team hope to create a working system within nine months.
Other teams looking at ways to seek people trapped under debris have designed wheeled, tracked or even snake-like robots that can slither into wrecked buildings (New Scientist print edition, 10 November 2001).
But rats have several advantages. “Artificial noses don’t work well when there are other smells around,” says Christiane Linster, an olfaction expert at Cornell University in New York. “Rats are good at that.” Rats are also adept at navigating over unexpected obstacles, and of course they do not need an electricity supply.
Rescue teams welcome the idea. “It would be absolutely fantastic,” says Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland, which flies rescuers to disaster zones around the world. “A rat could get into areas and spaces we couldn’t get to. And a rat would try to get out if it didn’t feel safe.”

Took and still am taking quite a long time to self-reflect upon my personal project stuff. Got stuck for a whole month or so, but at least I keep working towards it regardless and find some strategies to reuse my lazily done corpus of empowering creativity.

POSTFACE
Mature violence TW for the dream log, details under the cut because it really is the very triggering one thing deserving the label and nothing else:
(Sometimes expressing myself so bluntly honest is not the best thing to do eh? This time I got a dream spitting out the worldscape we live currently by, right back at amazing allies of mine for trauma processing that kicked me out for what amounts to a excellent reason, so it might not be the best idea next time to push outward my darker feelings. And yes, it had axis-victory tier of horror-fuel.)
Essentially the (nightdream+daydream) dream power escalation dream interrupted by me waking up and still engaging in the fantasy of it until it felt satisfactory justice-wise. It was a fierce duel between me and Doctor Robotnik (yk the one person whom Sonic calls "Eggman") which he tried containing me in his control-freak nihilism of a world (Trying to exert control over the universe itself, and also where my sleepy part of the dream somewhat ended). He destroyed several clusters of stars (most I made were red dwarves because I got quite the vibe for distant future cosmogonies tbh) at each attempt of mine to make it begin once more, I was unimpressed and very disappointed of him.
It ended up very gruesome and vile (for a cartoon caricature character of Theodore Roosevelt, the one person I should not insult the legacy of) with him getting his brain chopped of into a machine by nobody else but William Strasse (aka Deathshead from Wolfenstein) as servant of grander forces than I, which made me smile where it shouldn't have as it has been a lingering thought for quite a long time.
I do not wish it even to my worst rivals, even the ever-present systemic dread from Woodrow Wilson's legacy in the present day (which is my vendetta these days, but one I understand the context of fairly well), but that being said, some of those really spark much imaginative energy in me with the present political circumstances. I guess it signals that it would really be time for me to heal my inner shadows and embrace positivity fully-ier before it invokes worse monsters from the human minds' psyche into local space.
Hopefully we transcend the "Burgundian Himmler" neo-fascism phase of West's decadence fast and swiftly because each week that passes on their helm keeps invoking worse and worse horrors as they reach the ocean of clades' bottom pit of despair with too little punishment.

When I was at university, in the UK. The lecturer who handled the "flooding" portion of our "Humans and the Environment" module was one of Scotlands leading flood experts.
As in he had WRITTEN the software the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, SEPA, uses for flood prediction.
Now Britain is in an interesting position with regards to the natural sciences. It has a large body of fairly accurate climate data going back upwards of 200 years because the Empire gave it a large upper-middle class of landed gentry with education and no drains on their time, and a bunch of them decided to develop the sciences because of this.
On top of that, thanks to a combination of William the Bastard being a greedy fuck, and that he was the last successful invasion of the British Isles. Britain has accurate tax records going back 950 years. Which has some implications on climate records. We know when and where there was flooding, because we know when and where there was tax relief because of it.
So when he told us that what used to be, fifty years ago, classed as a hundred year flood (as in you could expect to see that level of flooding once in a century) was now classed as a ten year flood, and ten year floods were now classed as annual floods. We believed him.
Especially when he went on to tell us that he had just closed on a house. A house on a floodplain. That he expects to flood annually. That he KNOWS is on a floodplain and can be expected to flood annually because he wrote the software that predicts that. Because there were no new builds in the area that weren't on a floodplain. We believed him.
OP says that it's a predictable result of climate change (and it is, although there are other contributors). And they're right about that.
OP also says it isn't normal and they're half right. It has not been normal. It is going to become normal.
Flood warnings and alerts across England right now- I hope everyone is able to stay safe and in their homes.
But don't let anyone tell you this is normal! It's a predicatable impact of climate change, but it isn't normal.
