Some string inverters include power optimizers mounted on each panel that increase the system’s efficiency. However, this is an additional cost. Micro inverters are more expensive than the traditional string inverter, but offer a number of advantages, including single panel power optimization.
Power Optimizers
Power optimizers are module-level power electronics that enable PV systems to harvest more energy, even when panels are partially shaded. This helps you make the most of your utility’s time-of-use billing structure, and it is particularly helpful if you live in an area with trees or buildings that can cast shade on the array throughout the day.
Essentially, power optimizers track and optimize the DC voltage at the individual panel level and boost it to match the aggregate group in a string's design input voltage capacity (e.g., 380 VDC). They also help prevent overheating in your solar system. They do this by bucking or boosting DC power on a continuous basis.
They are installed under the PV modules, and there is usually one power optimizer per PV module in a string. Since they are constantly bucking or boosting the power output, they do require a larger inverter capacity than PV modules alone. This is why it's important to choose the right size inverter for your PV system with the number of solar panels and power optimizers you choose.
MPPT Circuits
MPPT circuits are the brains of modern solar charge controllers like the REDARC XWSCC, Outback Power, Xantrex and Blue Sky Energy. They use microprocessors to sweep along the panel voltage to find and operate at the optimum output point (MPP) for maximum electricity transfer to the battery.
As the conditions change, the MPP changes - as an analogy, a car’s transmission continuously varies the ratio between speed and torque. This is what the MPPT circuit does, and this enables it to extract more power from your solar panels than simple DC-to-DC converters.
These microprocessor controlled MPPT circuits can also mitigate shading effects in string inverter systems. Shading of any single panel in a string will diminish its overall performance because the DC power flow from that panel is being split among multiple inverters in the series string. An MPPT circuit can identify that problem and make the necessary adjustments, boosting all the inverters in the string to compensate.
String Inverters with Optimizers
String inverters work to maximize power production based on the combined voltage and current of each Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) circuit. However, a string inverter cannot optimize the electric voltage of each individual solar inverter Sydney like a DC power optimizer or micro-inverter system.
