Chaos theory thoughts under the thread

So many thoughts for later - first off, in love with it. I have fallen in love with Camp Cretaceous back when I put on season 1 back in 2020 as a pandemic watch and then kept watching until 2, had a watch party with 3, etc. Chaos Theory was SO solid. It delivered on so many fronts. The Brooklyn flashbacks were so damn good. This show handles certain themes of trauma so well. I know it may have just been a matter of pacing but I'm choosing to interpret that Sammy has the shortest Brooklyn memory compared to the others bc she's not thinking about it - she's focused on tasks so she never has to stop to feel everything weighing her down. Hope we find out about Sammy and her family in the second season. Honestly most of them and their dynamics following the island. There was a lot to take on though in 10 episodes. The Handler. Loved how they definitely amped up the nightmares on this season but she was the first human they've ever brought on that was as scary as the dinos. Also Kenji my sweet boy. Calls his mother EVERY WEEK because that's what you DO. She's his MOM. Brooklyn....like I know it's not the same but also she's really pulling a nearly-Furiosa look at the end and you know what, I'm here for it. Thoughts on Uprising Ep 7 The Price of Power

- cold open shows Shaw the scientist, who comes off as the typical misguided evil scientist type. possibly trying out his invention on himself, given his reaction when Beck tries to save him?? He’s an interesting one-scene character, if a little one-note.

How do you go from collaborating with the fascist regime to……. leading an uprising faction against it???? Like HOLY SHIT. Forget Beck; I wanna know what the arc of Bartik’s story is!!!!!!!

Ignore if you already got this one: what sort of weapon & special abilities is Feilan packin'?

Sword and shield combo, basically a reskinned Crocea Mors that I have yet to find a name I like for because his origins are similar to Jaune's in the sense that he's the dumbass with no clue what he's doing/audience surrogate that gives me an excuse to explain how the world works and the various storylines I've planned around him specifically involve him starting behind everyone else and managing to "catch up" by being clever more so than just having a larger stat block. Sword + shield is versatile, doesn't rely on flashy techniques like a lot of weapons in the series, and fits his assigned role as a fighter. I still need to come up with a good name for them ugh.

In terms of stats/powers/special abilities and so on, I started off by giving him extensive Aura reserves. Feilan typically lacks any sort of real training or conditioning at the start of a story and has to find a way to pick that shit up fast (and he generally manages to find a competent mentor, depending on how you define competent), so having a larger-than-average Aura lets him push himself hard during training. It's not enough to let him catch up, exactly, but he can at least close the gap enough to hold his own or not outright be a liability to more talented and experienced allies.

In terms of physical ability, he's got a good frame (plenty of height, broad shoulders) with room to add weight and a lot of innate athletic talent at the beginning, but he tends to start off fairly lean and not overly impressive in terms of strength/speed/stamina etc. because he hasn't put in the work yet. Once he does, he tends to be built like an NFL linebacker (I think I usually cap his height/weight out at 6'3" 225 lb) and relatively solid in terms of physical stats (he notably outmatches most members of Team RWBY in terms of pure physical strength and has good, but not exceptional, cardio/speed relative to his peer group), but he usually still suffers from a lack of technical skill. Outside of one very specific circumstance, I've made it a hard rule that he's never stronger in a duel than any member of Team RWBY, and his skills tend to run more toward larger-scale tactics and strategy. His role in a fight is generally not to personally win it through overwhelming combat prowess, and he usually considers simply surviving a fight until someone can arrive to bail him out or stalling until an ally completes an objective to be an accomplishment. When placed in a team (usually of students), his role is typically to serve as a tank, drawing aggro and freeing up/enabling his more dangerous allies to go HAM. When faced with an enemy that needs a serious ass-kicking, his response is less "whip out bullshit shonen powerup and win the fight himself like a badass" and more "scream Yang's name really loudly until she shows up and solves the problem for him" (if the threat is truly serious and he needs a real heavy hitter, he'll call for Qrow or one of his other mentor figures).

Feilan is quite intelligent and a little bit of a nerd, and thus he can serve effectively in a leadership role, whether that be as the leader of a team or a larger-scale command. He's experienced enough with strategy games like the one Team RWBY plays in Volume 2 that he understands basic tactical and strategic aspects of comment and can adapt on the fly, and he tends to do better when he can direct a battle instead of participating in it directly.

Feilan's Semblance is called Pack (or at least that's the working title), and its base form functions similarly to Jaune's Aura Amp - he can spend Aura to grant himself minor-to-moderate stat boosts, amplify the effects of someone else's Aura and Semblance, and infuse his own Aura into someone else to replenish their reserves. As his Semblance evolves, he gains the ability to apply the same stat boost to his senses (improving his sense of smell, hearing, etc.) and form Bonds to others, assuming there is sufficient and reciprocal emotional attachment. Once a Bond is established with a Packmate, Feilan can sense the presence of and apply the base effects of his Semblance to that Packmate without requiring physical contact (e.g. restoring Aura or boosting their stats from a distance) as long as the Packmate is within a certain distance of him. If two or more Bonded Packmates are present, Feilan can shuffle Aura directly between them (e.g. if Weiss's Aura broke, he could pull from Yang's reserves to replenish it, assuming both of them were Bonded to him), though he explicitly cannot draw in Aura from a Packmate and deposit it into his own reserves (wow I really wonder what that says about how he sees himself vs. how he sees others!!!). As more Packmates assemble within the area of effect, Pack becomes stronger - while it initially takes considerable effort and concentration to maintain the Semblance, to the point where Feilan must remain stationary and devote his full attention to keeping it working, each new Packmate to enter Pack's effective range increases the speed and efficiency of the transfers and reduces the concentration required to perform them, similar to how Geth platforms from Mass Effect network more efficiently in larger groups. With enough Packmates present, Feilan becomes able to contribute to the fight directly (at least in a limited capacity) while shuffling Aura between his allies and basically pumping a bunch of already-violent badasses full of Magic Meth (no, this power did not come about because I thought it would be funny to infuse Weiss with the essence of Florida Woman, I don't know what you're talking about), though doing so rapidly drains his reserves and thus can only be maintained for so long.

When designing Feilan, there were a number of key things I wanted to keep in mind. First, I wanted to make sure he didn't overshadow Team RWBY too egregiously. By nature of his position as the focal point of the stories I tell about him, there is no way to avoid him drawing some degree of attention away from the girls, but I didn't want to force them into the role of side characters in their own franchise, so I made an effort to contrive things such that Feilan is not equal to the challenges he faces alone and desperately needs their support and assistance, in addition to providing them with their own storylines and opportunities to shine that are mostly unrelated to him. As a result, I place a lot of emphasis on Team RWBY's internal narratives, as well as their presence in action set pieces. Team RWBY's fights feel very serious, like something out of a battle anime or martial arts movie, whereas Feilan's fights are more like a Vash the Stampede clown fiesta or something out of a Jackie Chan movie that likes making its protagonist the butt of the joke.

I also really appreciate the way RWBY deviates from Standard Shonen Bullshit where the protagonist wins more or less on his (and it's almost always his) own through direct personal strength and determination, so I wanted to make sure I kept as many of RWBY's themes intact as possible. I didn't try to preserve all of them at all costs, some because I just did not really vibe with them and some because I just felt like telling a different kind of story, but I did try to make my story something recognizably RWBY instead of simply slapping names and concepts on top of something that otherwise only bears the slightest resemblance to the show. This is an action show, after all) and the value of unity, which is why I gave Feilan a mindset and skillset that makes him significantly more effective in the presence of allies (and, notably, doomed to failure without them. The only reason he survives any of the stories I've plotted and outlined is because he has people watching out for him). He's not meant to succeed on his own, he's meant to lift others up.

Feilan arose because I wanted to write self-indulgent bullshit but I didn't want to do the horrible things the people who just use Jaune for that crap do to his character, so I did the cultured thing and made an OC who shares some of the traits that make Jaune useful for this kind of role, but is distinctly his own character. The things I wanted to do would not have worked if I tried using Jaune as a focal character unless I warped him so badly that he wasn't Jaune anymore, but Jaune and Feilan do share certain attributes and struggles - they start behind everyone else, share similar weapons/Semblances/physical profiles, typically try to become a Huntsman through less-than-legitimate means, have many, many sisters, have some attitudes about masculinity that they need to unlearn, work better in combat as support fighters/tanks instead of carries, and so on and so forth.

Marketing is a big thing. Take Schitt. They came up with the idea of making good simple solid audio products at very reasonable prices. They use modern manufacturing methods (probably lots of robots) and emphasize that they make it all in the USA. But what made them was the name. Early on they said it was a old family name, but no they just made it up as they were sure to get noticed. They are doing well.

Many innovative designs come along, get backing and run along for a while. Some prosper, some don't. Then there are the vulture companies that basically make full on copies of classic stuff since patents and copyrights have run out. They trade on the reputation and quality of the old stuff. You can have brand new 1950s sound.

Some companies just build what they have done for decades and add stuff from time to time. McIntosh still makes tube amplifiers and now DACs.

There are businesses that buy the name and rights to an extinct product line and exploit that reputation. They may or may not make good versions or even market better stuff using the old brand to get in the door.

But really is there anything new?

The basic electronic circuits for all analog audio equipment were sketched out in the 1950s or before. Since then its been tweaking and fiddling and fretting over details. I built a transistor amp from a heap of parts and a schematic from an old book published in the 60s. It was good under certain conditions. What did I know about output inductors! The commercial products of the day and even now were just variations on the same design ideas.

The best solid state equipment has benefited from better discrete devices as in transistors, diodes, resistors etc. Capacitors have been improved due to demands of the military and computer industry for example. I love to look at circuit schematics of the new stuff if they can be found and I see ghosts of the device I made on the kitchen table 50 years ago. Yes there are fiddles and regulators and stuff, but the fundamentals are the same.

Another thing in high end stuff is people are willing to spend incredible volumes of money on things. You can buy a very nice Swiss made amplifier for $250,000 USD per channel. So no doubt it has nice parts in it. Is it that much better.... You have heard of the placebo effect right?

Tube circuits date earlier. My favorite brand Audio Research was one guy tweaking other peoples stuff to the point he was just using their chassis. Then with a bit of backing or risk taking started to make his own stuff. His methods evolved, but they did not revolutionize technology. Yes they use really good parts where they can. There is of course the sub-cult where only original vacuum tubes made in the wetlands of Europe or New Jersey are any good. Otherwise they need to settle for Eastern European and Asian copies as they make them still.

Within all this are trends and fads. For example no vacuum tube or transistor is truly linear. Their response is always a curving line. To compensate for that there is a correction signal taken from the output to adjust the input. It is called feedback. It was determined by somebody that this method caused distortion so feedback was bad. A recent fad has been to reduce it or even eliminate it. The designer may prefer the sound of the nonlinear components to forcing them to be linear.

Really you are accepting more of one kind of distortion to reduce another.

A "new" approach is to use feed forward by not correcting the output of the main circuit, but adding another signal from a "high precision" small device to correct the signal. This idea dates back almost 100 years, they just could not build it with what they had. Somehow they managed to get a new patent on the idea.

Another trend is to use tiny small amplifiers with "super high quality" devices for your system They are called single ended triodes. I smile at the money that is spent on those. Let me say it will never be my money. Key is those designs are new as of 90 years ago.

So what is all this about? What is my point?

It is that for all the marketing and money and new ideas things are not all that different. State of the art from 50 years ago is not really that much less than the new stuff today. In fact it is often better. If a product has survived it is because someone used it and kept it and it worked and still does.

My central point is this. If you are rich enough for the latest stuff and have room for it, go for it. If you are not rich, and can be satisfied with 95% or even more of what passes for the very best today then look to the past.

I have old stuff. And yes I lust after some things I come across, but that is also old stuff. It is very good. It was very good when new, and is still. With my current old stuff I hear things you will never get in a car, or on earbuds, or headphones, or on anything you could buy from a big box store.

It can be a lot of fun.

Microchip Introduces Silicon Carbon Electronic Fuse Handout Board

���Lansheng Technology Information】The high-voltage electrical subsystems of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) need to have a protection mechanism to protect the high-voltage power distribution and loads in overload conditions. In order to provide BEV and HEV designers with faster and more reliable high-voltage circuit protection solutions, Microchip Technology Inc. announced on May 12 the release of a silicon carbide (SiC) electronic fuse (E-Fuse) demonstration board. The device is available in 6 models for 400-800V battery systems rated up to 30 amps.

The E-Fuse demo board detects and interrupts fault currents at the microsecond level, which is 100 to 500 times faster than traditional mechanical methods thanks to a high-voltage solid-state design. The fast response time greatly reduces the peak short-circuit current from tens of kiloamperes to hundreds of amps, preventing fault events from causing hard failures.

“This E-Fuse demo board provides BEV/HEV OEM designers with a SiC technology-based solution to quickly and reliably protect electronics to jump-start the development process,” said Clayton Pillion, vice president of Microchip’s Silicon Carbide Business Unit. “The E-Fuse’s solid-state design also alleviates concerns about the long-term reliability of electromechanical devices without degradation from mechanical shock, arcing or contact bounce.”

With the resettable feature of the E-fuse demo board, designers can easily package the device in a vehicle without worrying about the repairability limitations of the design. This reduces design complexity and enables flexible vehicle packaging, enabling improved powertrain distribution for BEV/HEV.

Because the E-fuse demo board has a built-in local interconnect network (LIN) communication interface, OEMs can accelerate the development of auxiliary SiC-based applications. The LIN interface can be configured with an overcurrent trip feature that requires no modification of hardware components and can also report diagnostic status.

The E-fuse demo board features Microchip's SiC MOSFET technology and PIC® microcontrollers' Core Independent Peripheral (CIP) and LIN-based interface for unrivaled ruggedness and performance. Heartbroken at the fact that Pac-Man gets an amazing modern redesign in the form of championship edition but Galaga has no such modern adaptation. I played so much of both on the same cabinet and it's a wonderful action counterpart to Pac-Man's more defensive maze navigation gameplay.

Like why are we doing remakes and remasters of shit like the last of us and uncharted when those were made post HD revolution era and the only thing they stand to gain in being redone Is some better textures and lighting effects? There are so many solid old school games that were designed in the era when space invaders accidentally achieved ramping difficulty because killing the alien sprites made the game lag less and thus speed up gradually.

Pac-Man championship edition is amazing because It amps the original gameplay up to 11 and fully leverages the freedom of not being limited by memory limits. It is actually possible to break the code of the original Pac-Man by reaching the "kill screen", where an integer overflow occurs at the 256th screen because it's running on like eight bytes of memory. Meanwhile Pac-Man championship edition is able to do all kinds of crazy shits such as procedural generation, multiple distinct levels, ramping speed, etc. There are no limitations on it and the developers were able to focus solely on making the gameplay work.

So please whoever owns the rights to galaga, please stop dumping it onto shitty emulator cabinets with infuriating digital input delay. Find a team of people who have hyperfocused on old ass games (Sonic mania style) and let them design an indulgent over the top arcade shoot em up game.
