Does Anyone Care About TARZAN?
Does Anyone Care About TARZAN?
Tarzan, the classic pulp hero created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, may be heading to the screen once again. Sony Pictures has picked up the screen rights to the character from Burroughs’ estate, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., and is seeking to do a “total reinvention” of the character and intellectual property. No writer, filmmaker, or producer is attached as the studio looks for a top-down re-imagining…

Lots of Disney animated releases...
A couple of days ago, The Walt Disney Company rolled out a monstrous slate of largely untitled releases from their "Walt Disney Pictures" division (makers of their live-action movies and CG tech demo pictures like LION KING 2019 and JUNGLE BOOK 2016), Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Pixar.
The new dates on the board...
11/20/2024: UNTITLED DISNEY ANIMATION
06/13/2025: UNTITLED PIXAR
11/26/2025: UNTITLED DISNEY ANIMATION
03/06/2026: UNTITLED PIXAR
06/19/2026: UNTITLED PIXAR
11/25/2026: UNTITLED DISNEY ANIMATION
The typical Thanksgiving slots for WDAS, still one-a-year for them. Pixar has now eased into doing two every two years, with a picture in March and a picture in June... Seems like that's the lock for the time being, unless some major changes have to happen with a picture. (a la, say, THE GOOD DINOSAUR... But we're not in the Lasseter era anymore, so...)
A few posts ago, I wondered aloud what the next WDAS movie after WISH could be... We know that filmmakers Josie Trinidad, Suzi Yoonessi, and Marc Smith all have pictures in the works. There's the possibility of another feature-length sequel happening, be it a FROZEN III or maybe a ZOOTOPIA sequel, while BIG HERO 6 and MOANA got or will be getting Disney+ miniseries continuations. Something like ENCANTO, I feel, will go the latter route because what could you possibly make a feature-length movie sequel about? WRECK-IT RALPH is but done, what with the way RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET ended and also, director Rich Moore left WDAS a while ago. (He's now at Skydance after a brief stint at Sony Animation.) Then I suggested... What if WDAS revived a cancelled project like GIGANTIC? Or KING OF THE ELVES? Or COSMIC 3000? Not that it hasn't happened before, but... One can dream, right? That's a big part of Disney, innit? Dreams? But I'd imagine one of those cancelled films, should they be revived, will not be from Trinidad, Yoonessi, or Smith. I'd imagine they'd be tackling stories they themselves came up with, not taking over projects that used to be someone else's respective ideas.
Now, the interesting thing is, before WISH had ever been announced, all we hound-dogs that are always hounding for secrets and news... All we knew was that Trinidad, Yoonessi, and Smith had original projects in the works. This was announced back in fall 2019, when FROZEN II was weeks away from theaters. At that time, Carlos Lopez Estrada had a movie in the works, too. His own movie - not RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, which became his (and Don Hall's) movie after a major eleventh hour director shakeup - is no longer a thing at WDAS from what I understand. It was rumored to have been titled FOSTER, and could've come out this year if plans held, as Feature #62. He was also lined up to direct a live-action/CG ROBIN HOOD remake, but he's not working with Disney, period. He's off doing other things... I wonder how long WISH was in development, because it seems to have been the one to jump to the rescue... Prior to WISH's announcement, I don't remember *any* piece of news saying that directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn were working on a feature at the studio. You would think that, given Chris' success with the FROZEN movies and TARZAN and his status as a Disney veteran (you can see his name on THE FOX AND THE HOUND, released in 1981), we would've known he had a new picture coming after FROZEN II was released to beaucoup box office. WISH was just such an out of the blue announcement, though it was in the works for a long while, so I've heard... I guess it being a celebratory centennial picture is a good enough reason to really shroud the thing in secrecy!
There's three slots on the schedule now, and I'm thinking... Yeah, the 2024, 2025, and 2026 slots go to whatever it is those three directors are working on... If they're still set to direct their own pictures, that is.
That brings us to Pixar...
Pixar has made it known that a few filmmakers have features lined. We have Kristen Lester, who directed the SparkShort PURL, her movie has been in the works for a while and I'm assuming that this will be next after INSIDE OUT 2 opens in June 2024. I remember thinking it would be the early 2024 movie, until it was confirmed that COCO co-director Adrian Molina secretly had a movie of his won in the works, which is ELIO. Enrico Casarosa and Peter Sohn's movies snuck up on us like that, too. So, now, I assume the summer 2025 Pixar is Lester's movie. It's been nearly six years since PURL was shown to the public via Disney+.
There's also Rosana Sullivan, who also directed a SparkShort, KITBULL. Then we have Aphton Corbin, no surprise, another SparkShort director, hers being TWENTY SOMETHING. Domee Shi, director of TURNING RED and the short film BAO, has a new feature lined up as well. What order these all come out in? Who knows! Whichever ones advance the fastest, whoever gets theirs to a satisfactory shape before animation is done. It could be any of these directors except Shi, because TURNING RED came out less than a year ago. I'd imagine her new movie is approximately 3 years away at the minimum. Could be the spring or summer 2026 movie, could not be.
Hey, does anyone remember Brian Fee had an original picture in the works? Brian Fee's feature directorial debut was CARS 3, and it was quietly made known that he had a movie of his own in the works... We've heard little about that since then. If his film is still a go, it could come out over the next few years... Maybe not! Bob Peterson, who was supposed to direct THE GOOD DINOSAUR, might have a feature. That has been hinted at back when GOOD DINOSAUR was released, that he was going to direct a new picture. But it's been nearly 8 years, so I don't know. Other SparkShort directors, such as Madeline Sharafian (BURROW), Brian Larsen (SMASH AND GRAB), BOBBY RUBIO (FLOAT), Erica Milsom (LOOP), Steven Hunter (OUT), and the like could be gearing up for features of their own.
Then there's that million dollar question, literally... Will there be any more sequels? I honestly did not expect INSIDE OUT 2 to be a thing, let alone be announced, prior to this past D23. Now you're probably thinking, "Kyle, the first INSIDE OUT made nearly $900m at the worldwide box office! Of course they'd make a sequel!" But, I wasn't sure. Many originals were lined up, and a lot of time has passed, plus its director Pete Docter has no time to direct anymore since he's running that studio... I figured maybe a Disney+ series about other peoples' emotions, not just Riley's, could be a thing. But no, it's a full-blown sequel from a different director (Kelsey Mann), and it will explore Riley's teen years. Possibly risky subject matter for a PG-rated Pixar family movie, but TURNING RED tread similar waters just fine, though not without some puritanical backlash from the usual suspects.
Pixar tends to lock themselves in with these one-and-done stories that don't really, IMO, call for sequels. Like, I still can't imagine sequels to RATATOUILLE, WALL-E, and UP for starters, ditto COCO and SOUL. BRAVE would've been ideal for sequels, to me, if that movie hadn't been robbed from its originator Brenda Chapman. It's probably too late now to revive Princess Merida anyways. A Disney+ show is likely our best bet if any of us want to see more of her and the DunBroch kingdom. ONWARD, too, actually... But ONWARD didn't make much of a mark (it opening right before COVID-19's outbreak in the US notwithstanding), so there's that. LIGHTYEAR ends on a cliffhanger, but that movie flopped hard, so no sequel.
That leaves us with LUCA, whose director - Enrico Casarosa - seemed to imply that he wasn't against revisiting that story. LUCA was an incredibly popular streaming and merchandising title from what I understand, so I don't see why not? Maybe Casarosa will pursue another original movie and leave a sequel to another director, as INSIDE OUT 2 isn't being directed by Docter. Speaking of Docter... Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird likely aren't back for another round of FINDING NEMO or THE INCREDIBLES, respectively. Bird's off at Skydance, Stanton's trying to get live-action pictures off the ground. Stanton was setting FINDING DORY up to be directed by someone else, but after his JOHN CARTER OF MARS undeservedly flopped hard at the box office in 2012, he returned to Pixar to direct DORY himself. If a third FINDING movie gets off the ground somehow, he'll likely executive produce it. There have been rumors of a FINDING NEMO Disney+ show being a thing, maybe if it is a thing, they'll announce it in time for the original's 20th anniversary... A scary thought right there, FINDING NEMO turning 20 at the end of May... I was turning 11 when that was coming out.
As for THE INCREDIBLES, that all depends on whether Brad Bird signs off on a 3rd movie or not. Maybe Bird will stay at Skydance, depending on what goes on with RAY GUNN, a movie he's been wanting to make since the mid-1990s. RAY GUNN is interesting because it was supposed to be done for Turner Animation, but it got rejected sometime around Warner Bros.' acquisition of Turner. Bird instead took on THE IRON GIANT for Warner Animation. RAY GUNN likely didn't make it because it was always meant to be a PG-13-level sci-fi noir, a seedier animated tale than the usual... So there was no way that would've been made at Pixar, plus Bird really set his sights on a live-action project called 1906, which still has yet to happen. I can imagine him wanting to pursue all of those unmade movies he's always wanted to make, not another INCREDIBLES movie. I think what **could** happen is this... He writes, produces, and signs off on a third INCREDIBLES that someone else directs. I mean, it's not a terrible idea. TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2 were directed by John Lasseter, Lee Unkrich - editor of the first film and co-director on 2 - directed TOY STORY 3 all by himself and many felt that that film turned out fantastic. Josh Cooley directed TOY STORY 4, an admittedly divisive finale, but I really liked it and it can't be denied that it is a very well-made movie from a directing standpoint. Bird wrote and directed INCREDIBLES 2, but a lot of the all-knowing online league of cultured nerds declared that movie to be a letdown. I don't know, I really loved it myself. Whatever... Either an INCREDIBLES 3 happens, or a Disney+ series.
What ever may happen or be greenlit is anyone's guess, but that's a lot of dates to think about!

Sony acquires ‘Tarzan’ franchise rights
Sony Pictures has acquired film rights to Tarzan in a deal with the estate of original book author Edgar Rice Burroughs. A new project is soon expected to be in development, which would reportedly reimagine the character to modern times. According to Deadline, there is no writer, director, or producer linked to the project. The well-known character was first established by Burroughs in 1912, and…

Tarzan to Receive New Film from Sony Pictures
Tarzan to Receive New Film from Sony Pictures
Image: Warner Bros. Tarzan isn’t exactly what you’d call a popular character in the current culture landscape. While folks age 24 and older may fondly remember the 1999 Disney movie, the most recent version of the character Warner Bros.’ 2016 film The Legend of Tarzan starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie, didn’t exactly have audiences clamoring for more. But since we’re doing movies…

Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet in “Little Women”; Sony Pictures
The trailer for the upcoming Little Women adaptation, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, was just released today. I feel like I’ve been hearing news about this movie for about a year at this point, and very little that I’ve heard has inspired any excitement. Maybe it’s too early to judge, as the film won’t be released in theaters for another four months, but I am not on board.
To tell you why I’m not on board, let’s first dissect the trailer:
youtube
First of all, I am really not on board with this whole thing now of having a little mini trailer before the trailer to introduce the trailer. And that is in every trailer now! Like, what marketing team decided that was necessary? It makes me irrationally angry.
But moving on, can we talk about the costumes? Some of them look pretty good, your standard mid- to late-19th century period piece looks. Others, though, are a little like a Taylor Swift video (no hate). I mean, if you’re going to do that anachronistic, almost surrealist costuming in a period piece, might as well go all the way, like Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, or the TV series Reign.
You would not see this bright of a pink in 18th century France
Not so many off-the-shoulder dresses in the 16th century
Costume issues aside, my biggest gripe with the movie, really one of the only things I can justify griping about, not having seen it, is the casting. Now, a couple of the casting choices are 100% spot on, namely Saorise Ronan as Jo and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.
Ronan is brilliant in her other collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird, and has starred in several other literary adaptations and period pieces (Mary, Queen of Scots; Brooklyn; The Host; Atonement; and she is my dreamcast choice for Lizzy in Pride & Prejudice). I think she’s one of the best actresses working today, and though Winona Ryder will probably always be Jo to me, I think Ronan will be flawless in the role.
And Streep is never not the right choice. As stated on Modern Family, she could play Batman and be the right choice. Also, Laura Dern as Marmee will be great; that’s a perfectly good choice and I have no issues with it.
But let’s look at the casting choices I DO have issues with. The two main ones are Emma Watson as Meg and Timothée Chalamet as Laurie.
Let’s start with the one I only have kind of an issue with. I really want Emma Watson to find roles that are right for her. I’m not a Harry Potter fan myself, but I know a lot fans will always think of her as Hermione, and that’s a bit of a double-edged sword. And I think the fact that she played this iconic role so young and for so long is still kind of haunting her in a way; she hasn’t quite broken out of that character’s shadow yet.
A lot of people also loved her as Belle in the 2017 Beauty and the Beast; I was not one of them. I think she’s a great actress and I like her, but she just wasn’t Belle for me. (My pick for Belle, if anyone is interested, would have been Lily Collins; she has the perfect look and the singing chops.)
Watson is also not Meg March to me, though it’s hard to explain why. It’s not that she’s not American; Saorise Ronan is Irish, and I think she’ll be great. And I’m sure Watson will do just fine as Meg as well, but it’s just not quite right and I can’t really put my finger on it. (If you want to see Emma Watson in a role I DO think was right for her, watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Or The Circle, which was honestly kind of a mess, but she was great in it.)
So who would I have cast instead? That’s tough. We could go with an unknown, but I think either Dakota Fanning or Margot Robbie would have been great; both have done their share of period films, and either of them could play Saorise Ronan’s sister easily. (Robbie already played her cousin in Mary, Queen of Scots!)
Emma Watson in “Little Women”; Sony Pictures
Margot Robbie in “The Legend of Tarzan”; Village Roadshow
Dakota Fanning in “Effie Gray”; Sovereign Films
Okay. Now for the real tea. I am really, really not on board with the choice to cast Timothée Chalamet as Theodore Laurence, aka Laurie. This just does not make sense to me. It could be because I’ve only seen him in one other movie, Lady Bird, in which he played an insufferable teenage boy.
To be fair, Laurie starts out as kind of an insufferable teenage boy, but one with a good heart who eventually grows up into a genuinely good guy. What’s great about Christian Bale’s performance in the 1994 adaptation is that he’s believable as the mischievous boy at the beginning of the story, but he’s also believable as the slightly sobered but still good-humored adult Laurie. Sure, Chalamet was nominated for an Oscar, but I’m not convinced he can do that.
And I almost hate to admit this, but I don’t think he has the right “look.” The look is important. All four of the March sisters fall at least a smidge in love with Laurie, in a teenage crush kind of way, so we have to believe that. I don’t know, maybe lots of teenage girls do have a crush on Timothée Chalamet, and I’m just not in the loop because I’m old. But I just don’t see it.
But you know who I COULD see as Laurie? He might be a little old now, but Liam Hemsworth. I’ve always thought Gale Hawthorne is who Laurie might have become if he’d had to fight in the Civil War. (Not really, I just thought of that, but it sounds good, right?) And you know what? I don’t think he is too old. He’s 29 now, and so is Emma Watson, and she’s playing Meg, so it would be fine.
Also, since we got a movie of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, shouldn’t this Little Women film be an adaptation of Little Women and Werewolves? Or maybe it is, and no one will know until halfway through the movie when Laurie starts chewing on the furniture.
Have you seen the trailer yet? What are your thoughts? Are you excited, or do you have misgivings, like me? Who would have been your dream cast?
Note: I’m thinking about making “I Am Not On Board” a regular series (kind of like “My Seven Top Five”), in which I write about my strong negative opinions on various bookish and book-related topics. What do you think, too negative? Am I just looking for reasons to be displeased if I do this? Let me know what you think!
I Am Not On Board With Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” The trailer for the upcoming Little Women adaptation, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, was just released today.

Black Animators
I’ve been on a hunt to find black animators (especially because female coloured animators were definitely hard to find). I have noticed that it’s rare that black animators win awards. Why is that?
I did a poll on instagram to see if anyone knew of any black animators... it’s safe to say that there are no well known black animators because all the responses were people saying that I am the only one they know of.
A. that is so bias. And B. I’m not famous...yet!
youtube
Floyd Norman was the first black animator at Disney studios. Though he never saw it as a big thing, to some of us, it is!  Floyd E. Norman (born June 22, 1935) is an American animator, writer, and comic book artist. Over the course of his career, Norman has worked for a number of animation companies, among them Walt Disney Animation Studios, Hanna-Barbera Productions, Ruby-Spears, Film Roman and Pixar.
Tumblr media
Frank C. Braxton, Jr. (1929–1969) was a pioneering African-American animator and director. Braxton started his animation career at Warner Bros. Cartoons in the 1950s as an assistant to Ben Washam and was one of the very first African-American animators with any Hollywood studio. He stayed at Warner Bros. for two years. Allegedly Washam went to his boss and essentially demanded the hiring of Braxton at Warner Bros. Cartoons. With no prior animation experience Braxton was brought on as an "inbetweener" with one or two other new hires, but his talent rapidly propelled him up to being an "assistant animator", and to none other than master animator Ben Washam, in the already legendary Chuck Jones unit at Warners. Thus many of the incredible Jones cartoons of the mid-1950s contain substantial amounts of Braxton's work. Later, he worked under animation director Bill Hurtz and briefly managed a cartoon studio in Barcelona, Spain.  Braxton died of cancer in 1969. He is interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles. his last animated project is A Boy Named Charlie Brown that came out in 1969
Tumblr media
Dan Haskett (born 1952) is a veteran animator who designed the character Belle for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as well as Ariel for The Little Mermaid and Tod as an adult for The Fox and the Hound.
Haskett was the main designer of the characters Minerva Mink for Steven Spielberg's Animaniacs and Radio AAHS' mascot disc jockeys Ozzie and Kazoo. Haskett also has credits for Toy Story, The Prince of Egypt, Sesame Street and The Simpsons.
Here’s an interesting interview with him: https://cedricstudio.com/2010/04/interview-with-character-designer-dan-haskett/
Now this next animator is definitely an inspiration to me! All my childhood favourite films, Bruce worked on them!
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne Smith (born September 6, 1961 in Los Angeles, California) is an American character animator, film director, and television producer. He was the creator of Disney Channel's The Proud Family, as well as the supervising animator of Kerchak in Tarzan, Pacha in The Emperor's New Groove, Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, and Piglet, Kanga, and Roo in Winnie the Pooh.
Smith studied animation in the Character Animation program at the California Institute of the Arts. He joined the Walt Disney Studios an animator on Who Framed Roger Rabbit and various other Roger Rabbit shorts that the studio produced. Soon after, Smith was handpicked by producer/director Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang) to direct the Paramount Pictures animated film Bébé's Kids.
Smith also served as co-director on the Warner Bros. live action/animated film Space Jam before returning to Disney as supervising animator on such films as Tarzan (Kerchak and Baboons) and Emperors New Groove (Pacha).
While working animation on the feature film side, Smith started feeding into his love of television animation and created The Proud Family for the Disney Channel. He co-founded Jambalaya Studio for the production of the series and crafted over 50 episodes of the hit series along with The Proud Family TV movie. Smith then rejoined the Walt Disney Studios and Duncan Studio Production to supervise animation on The Princess and the Frog (Dr. Facilier) and the Winnie the Pooh Movie (Piglet, Kanga and Roo) and as the lead animator on the short Tangled Ever After. Smith's knack for unique character design led him into the visual development of other projects at the studio such as Wreck-it-Ralph and Frozen.
Tumblr media
Jim A. Simon is an artist and animator. With his animation company, Wantu Studios, he created animations for Sesame Street and other shows. After graduation, Simon began working as an animation background artist at Paramount Pictures' animation studio. It closed four months after he joined, but his time there had allowed him to join the animators' union. A Paramount colleague then brought Simon in as an assistant animator on the 1960s Spider-Man animated series. After a year-and-a-half, Simon left in order to freelance, recalling in 1975 that, "I was turning out so much work, they had to promote me, because I was earning more money than some of the full-fledged animators. But it got to the point that I was just too excited about the things going on inside my own head, which I could not release while working for someone else." Circa 1972, he formed Wantu Animation Inc., initially based in New York City and then Los Angeles. Simon's clients included the PBS children's educational series The Electric Company, for which his first short film, "Hey Diddle Diddle", won an award at the International Animated Film Association's 1975 Animation Awards Festival; WNET's children's educational series Vegetable Soup; Sesame Street; the Black Psychiatrists of America; and the New York Public Library.

LeSean Thomas was born 1975 in The South Bronx, New York City) is an American television animation producer, director, animator, comic book artist, writer, character designer, and storyboard artist, based in Los Angeles.
His recent, notable projects include the TV series, Black Dynamite, Legend of Korra for Nickelodeon Animation, Aaron McGruder's The Boondocksfor Sony Pictures Television, "Children of Ether" on Crunchyroll & the upcoming Netflix anime original series Cannon Busters and Yasuke.

Introduction: Ghostbusters: Answer the Call
Hi, folks! Before we get theoretical (and then critical), let’s set the stage. For those of you who aren’t fans of the “new Ghostbusters,” as it is called by fans, let’s give you a run down on the new film and the firestorm it created.
Ghostbusters: Answer the Call was released on July 11, 2016 by Sony Pictures. When director Paul Feig announced in October 2014 that he was directing a female-led reboot of the classic Ghostbusters franchise, the internet exploded—but not in a good way.
Almost immediately male fans of the original Ghostbusters franchise lashed out against the new series, accusing it of being gimmick-y and trying to push feminism. (1) Much of the criticism was vitriolic and misogynist. The controversy was not that the movie franchise was being rebooted—no, the controversy was that it was being rebooted with women playing the lead roles.
When Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (also referred to as Ghostbusters 2016, 2016 Ghostbusters, or GB: AtC) released in theatres, reviews were mixed. Female fans and critics seemed generally in favor of the movie; Manohla Dargis said the film was “enjoyable…fun” and that “Girls Rule. Women Are Funny. Get Over It.” (2) Many younger, female fans went to see the movie upwards of five or six times while it was still in theatres. (3)  While women and minorities seemed to enjoy the film, male fans and critics were not as kind. Movie critic James Berardinelli called the movie a “horrifying mess” while and Richard Roeper declared it the “worst movie of the year.” (4) (5) Old fans, who were disproportionately male, accused the new movie of “ruining their childhood.” (6)
Ghostbusters grossed a total of $229.1 million USD worldwide, below it’s needed $300 million USD to break even. (7) The film has been called a flop and the public reaction “mediocre,” and a sequel is unlikely. (8) Despite this tepid response, Ghostbusters was #1 in DVD/Blu-Ray home video sale in North America when it became available for purchase, and the online movie reviewing site Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 73% and certified it as “fresh.” (9) (10) The film has an active fan following (or fandom) online, especially Tumblr, AO3, and fanfiction.net.

Doc Savage Slated for the Small Screen from Original Film and Sony
Original Film and Sony Pictures Television partner to bring the pulp fiction franchise to the small screen. In association with Condé Nast Entertainment, the project is a part of the new three-year deal between the Neal H. Moritz-led Original Film and Sony.
The scripted series will chronicle his adventures, featuring rampaging dinosaurs, secret societies led by dastardly villains, fantastic gadgets and weapons, death-dealing traps, hair-raising escapes, and plots to rule the earth.
Executive producing the project are Moritz and Pavun Shetty from Original Film, and Oren Katzeff and Jon Koa of Condé Nast Entertainment. Condé Nast acquired the Street & Smith Library in 1959.
First debuting in 1933 in pulp magazines, Savage, otherwise known as Clark Savage Jr., was inspired by (and created to be a semi-combination of) notable literary and pulp heroes such as Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan. He was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic at Street & Smith Publications and principle author Lester Dent. The adventuring polymath was trained from early childhood to be at peak physical condition and is blessed with genius-level intellect and an eidetic memory, abilities he uses to right wrongs and correct injustice wherever he happens to encounter them. Along with characters like The Shadow (1930), Dick Tracy (1931), Conan the Barbarian (1932), The Lone Ranger and Tonto (1933), and Green Hornet and Kato (1936), Doc Savage was part of the later pulp genre that directly inspired the comic book superhero genre that emerged in the late 1930s. Marvel’s Stan Lee credited Doc Savage as being the forerunner to modern superheroes.
The character, which continues to have a devoted fan following, was previously adapted to the big screen in 1975’s Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze starring Ron Ely.
