The Story Of The 1st Impresario In Hong Kong Mr Harry Odell, His Empire Theatre (璇宮戲院) & To Be Continued尚未完場, The Touching Film About This Jewish Man

An ‘impresario’ is a person who organizes and finances concerts, plays and operas. Art intermediaries are important. They make the availability of art performances much more accessible for the public. A good impresario knows well the audience and their needs.

Mr Harry Odell, a Jewish man, was born in 1896. He came to live in Hong Kong in 1921 and died in 1975 at the age of 79.

It was said that his real name was ‘Harry Obadofsky’. He was the son of Russian Jewish parents. He was educated at St. Francis Xavier’s College, in Shanghai. He ran away from home at 16 and supported himself as a tap dancer in Japan, before emigrating to the USA. In 1921, Obadofsky arrived in Hong Kong and changed his surname to Odell for the reason of marrying a girl Sophie Weill whose family owned the prestigious jewellery business Sennet Freres in Hong Kong. He fought in the defence of Hong Kong in 1941 and was made a prisoner of war by the Japanese.  

Mr Odell loved art and culture. By persuading international acclaimed artists such as Xavier Cugat and Issace Stern to perform here in the colony in those years, he was the first impresario in the history of Hong Kong. He tirelessly lobbied the colonial government to build a permanent place for art performances. As a result, the first such venue, Hong Kong City Hall, was completed in 1962(information provided by Judy Green from 'The Dictionary of Hong Kong Biography’).

Mr Odell built his own concert theatre and film cinema known as the ‘Empire Theatre璇宮戲院’ in 1952.  It was located in the North Point area along King’s Road and in those years, North Point was regarded as a remote place. Business was bad and it closed in 1957, and re-opened in 1959 as the ‘State Theatre皇都戲院’ following the purchase by a rich Chinese businessman and extensive renovations. The State Theatre sadly closed in 1997.

Concerns were raised in 2015 that the heritage building might be demolished. In 2020, a big property developer in Hong Kong New World Development acquired the ownership right of the Theatre and put forward good proposals related to the conservation of State Theatre. The Theatre is being repaired and will be opened soon for the third time.

The above is not just a story of history. It is a love story of how Harry Odell loved Hong Kong and how we loved this art hero. His life is one big touching story with hundreds of little touching stories within it.  

2 film directors, Dora Choi & Haider Kikabhoy, made an evocative documentary movie about the noble story of Harry Odell and it is called To Be Continued 尚未完場.  This piece of impressive work looks back on the history of the State Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) and the great life of Harry Odell. A film critic wrote this: “Kikabhoy and Choi created a film that is not just educational; it is also upbeat, amusing and heart felt at the same time.”

Sony Classical edita Alba Eterna, ópera en dos actos, del compositor Albert Guinovart con libreto de Jordi Faura e interpretada por la orquesta Franz Schubert Filharmonia, bajo la dirección de Tomàs Grau.

Marta Mathéu, soprano, Anna Alàs, mezzosoprano, Marc Sala, tenor y Josep-Ramon Olivé, barítono, componen el elenco de esta tragedia contemporánea que nos habla de la búsqueda del tiempo, del amor, y del inexorable paso del tiempo.

Al escuchar Alba Eterna, quedamos inevitablemente fascinados por el universo sonoro de Albert Guinovart y por la impecable y magistral interpretación a cargo de Tomàs Grau y la Franz Schubert Filharmonia que, junto a los cuatro solistas, firman un trabajo delicado y de enorme belleza.

Según se describe en el texto del CD “No existen las fronteras estéticas en la música de Guinovart y muy especialmente en la de Alba eterna. El desplazamiento rítmico de un Stravinski convive con absoluta naturalidad con planteamientos melódicos del musical; el desatado romanticismo de Chopin resplandece en contraste con fanfarrias que remiten al universo de Kurt Weill o Nino Rota; el perfume de Poulenc, Montsalvatge o Leonard Bernstein se percibe en los ritmos y en una refinada ironía”.

El compositor y pianista Albert Guinovart, es heredero de excepción del extraordinario renacimiento cultural que con enorme fuerza emergió en la Cataluña de principios del siglo XX y que tuvo como resultado el nacimiento de nuevos fundamentos estéticos, siempre con una mirada a la gran cultura europea sin renunciar a las fuentes populares y la tradición heredada.

Compositor de dos óperas Atzar y Alba Eterna, un ballet Terra Baixa y seis musicales, avalados por dos premios Max a la mejor música y tres premios Butaca al mejor compositor, destacan Mar i Cel, Flor de Nit, Gaudí y La Vampira del Raval. 9:00 p.m. I visited my grandpa at Weill Cornell Medical Center earlier, before grabbing a bite to eat at Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine and then heading back home.

Jetzt wollen wir aber doch einmal schön provozieren, und unanständige Sachen sagen, daß die Besucher schockiert sind, sagten sich die 3 Sparten des Dreispartenhauses angesichts ihrer Zusammenarbeit für Die Sieben Todsünden und heuern die skandalumwitterte Konzeptkünstlerin Peaches (von der ich ehrlich gesagt noch nie gehört hatte). Die macht dann, weil die Todsünden etwas kurz sind, noch ihre Show. Das hat die Ute Lemper hier letztlich auch nicht anders gemacht, als Peaches-Konzert ist der Abend noch am Schlüssigsten, und wahrscheinlich eher ungewöhlich, weil sie noch Die Sieben Todsünden singt. Man kommt aber nicht umhin, zu denken, wenn das Orchester schon mal da ist, könnte es ja ruhig im Elektroteil auch mitspielen, von wegen Zusammenarbeit... Sie spielen dann nochmal, etwas verschwommen, doch bleibt es Beiwerk, wie auch der Text für das Schauspiel in Gestalt von Josephine Köhler, der charmant vorgetragen, aber auch eher gut gemeint als gut ist, und Alles will sich nicht recht zusammen fügen. Wir erfreuen uns derweil an Louis Stines vom Ballett. Das Publikum macht auch nicht mit, und jubelt, statt  provoziert zu sein. Interessant. Wir raten, um die schöne Kurt-Weill-Musik zu würdigen, die man am Ende des Abends ziemlich vergessen hat, dringend, die Aufnahme mit Marianne Faithfull zu hören.

Funkita F-Teamers Off the Blocks For Opens

Our Age Group F-Teamers shined at last week’s Nationals and now it’s time for our Open swimmers to step up to the blocks at the 2021 Australian Swimming Championships that kick off on Wednesday at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

With last year’s Nationals raced virtually due to Covid, swimmers are eager to finally race against the best in the country to see how they are positioned in the lead up to Trials that will be held in June. The meet runs till April 18 and if it’s anything like Age Nationals, we’re sure to see our F-Teamers put up some fast times.

NSW F-Teamer Meg Bailey is gearing up for a big meet.  “I’m really looking forward to Nationals this week and getting some racing under my belt. I’m hoping to post some good times with little rest coming into the meet.”

Heats will be run at night with finals taking place in the morning. This is to give the swimmers a chance to get used to the race schedule in Tokyo.

I am dying in Malaysia – A Not Canadian enough – though I was Canadian enough to fund the King’s Prerogative. Its maybe weeks until I die and I am trying  to reach many advocates.  It seems to save my life it will take the Entire World. But as I have reached out to many – they need to unite. Trudeau has signed my death warrant – Malaysia is extremely corrupt and created the events that have led to my death. There are so many Details in all these Blogs – and I have no idea what to do. Please Please assist. The situation is extreme and based on all the incredibly bad events of Malaysia and then Justin Trudeau, I am dying. I was unaware until recently - the illness makes it hard for me to function and when others sent me the news on Trudeau... my death is imminent.
