(SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show yet):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mxy knocks over a display case that contains the Helmet of Fate. The mystical, god containing item, makes its first appearance, along with Doctor Fate, in More Fun Comics #55 (1940) the panels were done by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman. The Helmet of Fate is the one controlling the body as it contains the god, Nabu, the Lord of Order. The helmet grants anyone who wears it magical powers and the mantle of the Doctor Fate. Usually the person most associated with the it is Kent Nelson but recent comics had Khalid Nassour take up the Doctor Fate name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we see Mxy pass by the Cosmic Rod of Starman/Stargirl. In the
comics the original owner of the Cosmic Rod was Ted Knigh, the original Starman. The Cosmic Rod he wielded was about the size of a flashlight. It wasn't until Starman #4 (1994) (W: James Robinson, P: Tony Harris, I: Wade Von Grawbadger, C: Gregory Wright, L: John Workman) that his son, Jack Knight took the new and improved Cosmic Rod that his father made and used it for himself to take up the Starman name. The staff would then get passed on to Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl who at the time took up the name Star-Spangled Kid, when Jack retired the Starman identity to raise his kid. Courtney took up the Starman name as Stargirl and used the Cosmic Rod to carry on the name. The Cosmic Rod gives its wielder flight and energy projection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr. Mxyzptlk then passes over a flight ring in the display. Very good homage to the Legion of Superheroes. Originally the LoSH wore belts to allow their members to fly, but Brainiac 5 was able to make flight rings so they can be less encumbered by the belts as seen in the panel from Adventure Comics #329 (1965) (W: Jerry Seigel, P&I: Jim Mooney, L: David Huffine). The LoSH are a group of young superheroes from the 31st century who are from various parts of the galaxy that fight evil as a team. The group was inspired by reading the history of what Superman did and they want to uphold his ideals and legacy. If they do show up in the show I'll definitely talk more about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In another display we see the Soultaker Sword. The sword is associated with Tatsu Yamashiro aka Katana. It and Katana make their first debut in the Brave and the Bold 200 (1983) (W: Mike Barr, P&I: Jim Aparo, C: Adrienne Roy, L: Jim Aparo). The sword was forged by Muramasa, who imbued it with magical properties where whoever kills with the sword, steals the souls of the victim's. Tatsu's husband and children were unfortunately slain by the sword, wielded by her brother-in-law and Tatsu has since then taken the sword and use it to avenged those who were slain by him. Because of the swords magical properties, it can be used to harm Kryptonians. Yes magic is a weakness for Superman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we cut back to the League of Loises ship, Jalana goes Flamebird on everyone and name drops Comet. This is a very good homage to Comet the Super-Horse. Comet made his first debut in Adventure Comics 293 (1962) (W: Jerry Seigel, P: Curt Swan, I: George Klein, L: Milt Snapinn) Comet, along with Krypto the Super-Dog, Streaky the Super-Cat, and Beppo the Super-Monkey, formed the Legion of Super-Pets to save the Legion of Superheroes and Superboy from Brain-Globes of Rambat. Give Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow a read if you want to check out a really cool Comet story.
Tumblr media
Krypton gets a name drop, Superman's home planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone on the MAwS team is a Kingdom Hearts fan.
Tumblr media
Kryptonite is finally introduced in the show, the most well-known weakness of Superman's. Fun fact Kryptonite made its first appearance not in the comics but on the Adventures of Superman radio show in 1943. It wasn't until 6 years later in 1949 that Kryptonite is introduced in the comics in Superman #61.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the League of Loises HQ we see MAwS Lois and Mxy walk down the hall with holographic projections of various Loises in the DC multiverse. The one on your left is obviously Lois Prime aka Fleischer Studios Lois the one on your right is Superman the Animated Series Lois. The one next to StAS Lois is Superwoman from Action Comics #60 (1943). The issue was created by Jerry Seigel and George Roussos where Lois dreams of having Superman's powers and saving the day.
Tumblr media
As Mxy searches for his hat we see him open up a cache of various weapons that the Loises have collected. Some of them are pretty recognizable like the Card Captor Sakura staff that's by Mxy's head, Guts's giant sword from Berserk above Mxy on the second shelf from the bottom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the episode wraps up we see MAwS lois activate the data sphere she took from the headquarters and sees evil Supermen tearing up the city. The first we see is an homage to Overman from Animal Man #23 (1990) (W: Peter Milligan, P: Chas Truog, I: Mark Farmer, C: Tajana Wood, L: John Costanza) and the second is designed after Justice Lords Superman from the Justice League cartoon.
Overman is from a world where all superheroes are part of the government and each one is a clone from him. Justice Lords Superman is from the two-parter episode "A Better World" where his Flash died, Superman kills President Lex Luthor in retaliation and he and the Justice League become dictators. Gotta admit Superman does look pretty cool in that suit.
That will be it for this week's episodes Easter Eggs and references. If you made it this far down the post and want to see the other MAwS Easter Eggs and references post you can find them here:

Okay so mixed reviews on the kung fu trio movie. Let's break it down
FIRST.
#1 biggest problem with this movie was their treatment of Ben, especially in flashbacks. I think they blew the "anger issue" thing way out of proportion (ESPECIALLY with the part of the timeline they were working with. On god) and also used that to make him like a "sassy" stereotype or whatever. Like guys thats racist come on. This came out in 2021 we are trying to DEstereotype people why are you applying new ones to characters who already had a stereotyping problem. Oh my god.
Anyways yeah I'll just say in general as a big Ben fan I don't think this movie was really fair to him in that sense, although there are a few moments I do like with him, such as most of the Broze Tiger montage, or when he comforts his student outside his dojo. Also mixed bag on him using 70s slang I think there are times where it was fun and worked and also times where it played into the above which 😡
ALSO on the topic of the 70s!!!!! I LOVED the fact that this movie was set in the 70s and that was acknowledged with style and slang and everything. I thought that was so fun (the sideburns omg) and after seeing it set that way I literally couldn't imagine a movie with them existing that wasn't set then. Like it's literally their era and the era of their genre.
Also all of the KFT had crippling depression, anger, and guilt complexes post 70s so there def would have been issues involved w that
Speaking again about the 70s, I feel like a lot of the other problems I had with the movie could have been solved by taking more plot elements from their precrisis comic.
Like these are more comic accuracy critiques but like why would you have there be a cursed sword (named soul breaker. That's literally two letters off from soultaker like could you be less subtle when ripping off other characters) when you could just be creative and use stuff from the O'Neil series instead. Like the O-Sensei gave Richard Dragon the Dragon's Claw so just have that be your artifact. Or if they really wanted a weapon for Shiva to be the Guardian of just make up a dagger that the Dragon's Claw could combine with and have both get stolen. Like I think there were better ways that plot could have been done.
Also speaking of Shiva I was really bummed that there were 0 Carolyn mentions in this movie, especially when the opportunity was RIGHT THERE. like they literally had a fellow student get killed in flashback to open the demon gate or whatever and instead of having it be Carolyn, for some reason it's Jade Nguyen instead (what is with DC adaptations and randomly inserting Jade with character groups she's not a part of??????). The only good thing from that decision was the absolutely hilarious moment of Jade accusing Shiva of not having what it takes to kill. Like BABE do you know who you are talking to. Most wrong anyone has ever been.
No but like I think killing (or even mentioning) Carolyn would have been a way better choice for the movie, especially in terms of Sandra. Especially because they were trying to do a "Shiva has changed, she's not the girl you knew" thing post-flashback. Like Carolyn's death would have been a PERFECT reason for this. To be fair, it would have made this movie super dark and pretty gory because post Carolyn Shiva is NOT to be fucked with ever but like they were already having people be murdered barehanded (with blood) and mild cursing so like they should have gone for it.
Side note: who was the target audience for these movies??? Like it's animated so you think younger but there's lots of violence and straight up murder by the protagonists (with gore) so like I don't even know.
Anyways yeah they should have killed Carolyn. OR had Shiva's blood relation to the O-Sensei be a thing still. Like listen. If you are going to make a movie based on a 70s comic like don't be afraid to take plot elements from that. Like ik the og comic has been made non-canon like twice by now but who cares. When was the last time the KFT backstory was actually talked about anyways? 2008? Just go for it bro. Make them related for extra drama and also legacy stuff. Shiva his (grand-niece? goddaughter? Idk) being his pride and joy but turning against his legacy into one of violence and blood which Richard, his psuedo-son (at least here. I don't remember the details of their og relationship) instead begins to rise and fill that instead.
Also I think they could have highlighted this shift in terms of Shiva's name. Ben and Richard are really the only people (besides Carolyn, rip Carolyn) she's Sandra to, so I think having her go by that at while training (which they called Nanda Parbat or smth similar btw which ????????? No???????) Would have made her shift into Shiva more meaningful, and their kind of denial of this transofrmation as well, as they continue to call her Sandra occasionally after they reunite. (Bruce would always call her Shiva post-flashback).
Also why did they have Shiva run a gang in Gotham to signify her evil(ish) status. They should have had her doing her normal thing. Like introduce her by having her challenge Batman (not knowing he was Bruce) but then win, stopping and sparing him once she realized their (movie-canon) friendship. That would also give us a cool fight scene out of it too.
Um feel like I covered most of the changes I would make- OH! I actually really liked how they did Richard in this. Which surprised me because he's my least favorite by far and I usually don't like him that much??? I think in canon it's definitely a case of the white guy learns martial arts, beats Asian people at it stereotype. I also just think things get weird and more like racist stereotypes start coming into play in terms of his original canon interactions with Ben, Carolyn, Sandra, etc. So I thought the choice to have him be Asian in this film was a really good one. Also they had him be interesting too. And like kind of cool. Idk this movie and his VA and all that actually made me really enjoy watching Richard Dragon. Which was weird as hell
Idk so mixed feelings on this movie in general. I really liked the premise of making a kung fu trio movie set so deeply in the 70s, I adore that, and I thought the addition of having Batman there and having known them actually worked really well. I'm very glad they did it that way. It obviously helped the movie itself get made and also in my ideal version BATMAN would honestly be the good mental health friend of the group by the end of the movie which is actually wild. Canon KFT trauma you are so insane and compelling to me actually.
My biggest issue with the movie (whose real name is like Batman: Soul of the Sword or something, [edit: it's called Soul of the Dragon] I love how I haven't mentioned it once [it's the kung fu trio movie to ME <3]) was definitely the portrayal of Ben. I'm definitely not suggesting we have him fall into the Black best friend stereotype he suffers from in the 70s comic but like. Just be better with it??? Thought his best moments of the film was where it went into his canon story and struggles and all that so just like. Do more of that idk. Just don't be racist abt it.
Otherwise my main gripes can all generally be summed up to this. When there's a point in a story where it feels like the adaptation has to diverge from canon to tell this story, 9 times out of 10 I believe it can actually be told better by moving closer towards canon, or by consulting a slightly different canon (precrisis vs preboot, etc.) In place of that.

you can always make me walk up walls by naming a sword smth like soultaker bc man, i'll never get tired of a weapon standing for the consequence it inflicts. yes, the thing literally takes someone's soul but also doesn’t every kill do that? isn't every sword a soultaker?
making it literal will always, always get me.

Victory Rewards Day 3-4: From 0 MP to 4k MP with Nostalgic Machina Portal.
God, I haven’t climbed ladder since… Dawn of Calamity, and I didn’t reach GM then. My competitive sense and sanity are nil, but now we have a new portal skin and I’m ticket-less so I jumped into Ranked to farm some chests welcoming Gullias in my Machina Portal deck.
But first, why is it off meta? Well, check yourselves.
Tumblr media
I know that, thanks to the Resonance package, Machina is one of the variants you could climb in ladder, and that’s the extent of my competitive knowledge previous to the additional cards. But not this deck, I’m not playing Resonance with Machina Sprinkles, I’m went full RSC by playing Machina with Rosa, Cassim and Yuwan to fix my hand and control board in case the robots weren’t enough. No Gilnelise, no Automachina Maiden (inb4 maidenless joke) and, specially, no Bahamut. I’m not here to wait until the big draggo comes to induce despair in my opponents, Belphomet and the furies were all I needed, If Gullias and a lot of wards haven’t done it before.
“How did you do it?” you ask, the answer is simple: I used Belphomet’s tentacles using his Fusion and then Belphomet himself as soon as you have 9 Play Points, the threat he provides wins you the match almost everytime. There’s little to no banish in ladder for you to worry about losing tentacles and the control tools are amazing. Fix your hand using the resonance trio and set your big wards lategame. Avoid summoning your divine treasures early, that protection is more valuable when you can play them at enhance 7.
Mulligan is easy, Belphomet, any 2 drop and Metatron going second. Your hand will sometimes get small but don’t worry, save your tools and control board.
Now, into detailed matchups.
Forest:
Control Forest: This deck does nothing but stall, and if they wanna stall you will join them. The match goes long but that’s where Calamity shines and gives you the autowin.
Tam Lin Tempo Forest: Just ward up, control early board with Gullias and Cassim, don’t let them bounce anything ang drop Shion and Enhanced (7) Treasure on curve. Belphomet ends.
Ladica Forest: Ward up, double Ladica is stoppable with Shield of Transgression, chip them and don’t let them play their combo safely or lose if you fail to set up a hard board. Yeah, it’s the closest matchup.
Sword:
Evo Sword: Hard matchup. Make them use those evo points or lose by Musketeers, clean their board entirely, Gullias’ accel > Gullias’ Fanfare when facing them.
Commander Sword: Same as above, clean their boards, set up big wards before the Fortress comes, this deck has smaller hands than Evo so it is easier.
Rune:
Earth Rite Rune: Easy win, Armored tentacle is hard for them to deal with. There are times you can play tempo-aggro and win at 7 because Riley loves to stay on deck (source: I was an ER enjoyer in GP), Shion for the ultimate win.
Manaria Rune: If you can aggro tempo, go aggro tempo, Resonance trio sets you up, tentacles and Gullias close the deal before they can drop the big spell.
Dragon:
Bahamut dragon: The hardest of all, but there’s not a lot of them so yay. They out control you and Bahamut drops too fast. Get your calamities, treasures and Wielder of the Cosmos. Godspeed.
Rush/Storm/Burn dragon: The biggest threat this deck has is not the burn but Si Long, she gets kinda difficult to kill early while saving your wards (specially Shion) to heal and avoid burning to death. Keep your health up and Belphomet seals the deal.
Shadow:
Flame and Glass Shadow: Their highrolls are impossible, but their midrolls and low rolls are usually your wins, the resonance trio carries in this matchup you so keep them alive as long as you can; same as with forest and Sword, don’t leave anything on board they can kill to gain advantage.
Burial Rite/Mordecai Shadow: It’s a back and fort that ends up on your win, lategame you’ll have beefy followers to clear their boards and get the W. Same as F&G, clearing boards > dealing damage.
Soultaker Shadow: Some players have Bahamut and some others don’t, if you can’t take them out with tempo/aggro and Gullias, the matchup becomes a war of attrition where Belphomet makes you win or lose.
Blood:
Handless Blood: For this matchup you can tech Birth of the ravenous but I haven’t seen a lot of them for me to do it. Just do the usual schtick of warding up and controlling board, but mind up healing. Rosa becomes valuable.
Mono Blood: Their lethal setups are predictable, save your wards for then, Enhanced Treasure and Shion have higher priority than Gullias.
Haven:
Skullfane Amulet Haven: Easy matchup, you outcontrol even when their Carmia Highroll because they first have to deal with your early boards.
Bellerophon Haven: This is the only matchup you should try to not rely on your tentacles as they will get banished. Resonance Package, usual Machina/Calamity Shenanigans and Shion Token are your go to. By the time of writing this, I haven’t faced a Multi Holy Saber turn so I can only hope the Shield of Transgression is all I need.
Ward Haven: As with rally sword, early board control is mandatory, untargetable cavaliers are a nuisance but nothing impossible to beat. Their late game board are annoying, but the matchup is winnable.
Portal:
Artifact Portal: The deck exists, but I haven’t found any since I started playing this. I will update later with tips but I suspect the only annoyance is Genesis Evo.
Puppet Portal: Now this is one I saw a lot. Your wards won’t keep up if you go second or they have Metatron so it’s down to how lucky you are. Their lowrolls and midrolls are your win.
Resonance portal: Same as Artifact, I haven’t seen one, but I suspect it’s a guaranteed loss with their turbo Bahamut and the same wards we use.
The deck was fun to play and got me lots of wins because my opponents weren’t expecting this build (GameWith’s Machina is different and that’s where most people take their info from, I just bamboozled them). But, as we’re aproaching day 5 and day 1 chaos is fading, the other decks are getting optimizations and the Machina Playstyle shows its age.
This is not a deck I’d recommend spending in, but if you have the cards and got bored of the other portal decks, give it a try for a while, as a farewell.
Goodbye, Rotation Belphomet and his robots. I’ll see you in unlimited.

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
February 23rd -  Katana
Tatsu Yamashiro grew up in an unspecified provence of Japan. A pair of brothers fell in love with her and both proposed marriage. Tatsu chose to wed the kinder of the two brothers, causing the other to become bitter and filled with rage. While Tatsu and her new husband started a family, the other brother joined the Yakuza criminal syndicate, quickly rising through the ranks due to his ruthlessness and determination. As a gift for his service to the Yakuza, the brother was offered the mystical katana sword known as ‘The Soultaker.’ This sword was fabled to possess the souls of the various victims whose lives it had taken. Armed with this weapon, the brother set out to extract revenge on Tatsu for rebuffing his proposal. He snuck into their home and killed his own brother with the sword. Tatsu was able to defeat her attacker and take the sword. In the course of the battle, however, a fire erupted that ended up killing Tatsu’s two children. Having lost everything, Tatsu rededicated herself to becoming a fierce warrior and righter of wrongs. She trained in the martial arts and became a near peerless sword-fighter, using the mystical blade The Soultaker. Now known solely as ‘Katana’ she ended up aiding Batman in a mission in Markovia. The success of the mission ultimately resulted in Katana becoming a founding member of Batman’s covert team known as The Outsiders. One of the Outsiders’ missions enabled Katana to finally get revenge on the man who had killed her husband and children. Katana later joined The Birds of Prey and also served as part of an iteration of The Suicide Squad. Actress Karen Fukuhara portrays Katana in the two Suicide Squad movies. The heroine first appeared in the pages of The Brave and the Bold #200 (1983).

ended up doing the whole Superfriends/Ultimen/Runaways gang. More or less the same meta as my last post on the group, but with a couple variations. All presented here in a kind of rough sketchbook format
I left out Vulcan this time, but Virgil kinda fills the “Son of Vulcan” role (this I rolled Black Vulcan, Son of Vulcan, and Juice all together under the expanded Shazam/Garden of Eternity umbrella). He’s the youngest hero here, but sort of brings everyone back together.
Tye is a metahuman patterning herself after the mythic hero Manitou Dawn, as well as a popular Black Metal singer and percussionist in several groups. She has the size-changing powers and super-senses of the Ultimen!Longshadow.
Eduardo is a little further afield: his primary power is teleportation like the YJ version, but he also spent some time training under the mystic Extrano, giving him a wider range of abilities on par with the Superfriends version. He briefly dated Bunker, but he and Miguel decided they were better as friends (occasionally hook-ups notwithstanding, I mean Ed’s beautiful, fuck)
Goldrush is here, but now she’s kind of El Dorado’s archnemesis, on account of her powers are a direct result of experiments by the White Dragon
Asami’s reworked to be a sort of weird fusion of the Superfriends’ Samurai, Ultimen’s Wind Dragon, and Sam Koizumi, all filtered through 90s anime tropes. She’s a metahuman with aerokinesis powers, but “Wind Dragon” here is a yokai she’s consolidated with her powerset through her sword. She was actually originally inspired by Red Tornado and was elated to meet both the mechanical Tornado and Cyclone.
Katana was her sidekick for years before Tatsu married Maseo and moved to America. Maseo’s death and Tatsu willingly taking on Soultake was a point of contention between the two, leading to Tatsu to break from her mentor entirely and agree to join up with Task Force X as a handler.
pls ignore how small Tatsu is, none of these are to scale with each other, I just messed up and didn’t get around to fixing it yet

Hey Q! Did you see that report that some weirdo guy stole this sword from a museum recently? It was on the news a little earlier today.
Tumblr media
That depends which sword you're talking about. And which museum.
I've dealt with a number of sword thefts over the years. Morgaine Le Fay has made several attempts to steal Excalibur, and I doubt there's a gang in Japan that hasn't made a bid for the Soultaker sword.
If you could just give me a bit more information, I'm sure I'd be able to stop this person before they do any serious harm.

20 Most Important Female Characters in DC
Tumblr media
18- Katana 🗡
Current Affiliations: Outsiders; Birds of Prey; League of Justice; suicide squad
Created By: Mike W. Barr; Jim Aparo
Birth name: Tatsu Yamashiro
Tatsu Yamashiro, better known by Katana, is the first member of the group Birds of Prey to enter our list. This excellent samurai possesses a mystical sword called the Soultaker that possesses the souls of all those killed by the deadly metal.
Tumblr media
But don't be fooled, as the Soultaker isn't the only trick Katanna has up her sleeve. Like any other samurai, Katanna received martial arts training from a secret group called the Outsiders. In addition, she was also personally trained by Batman during his stay in that secret organization.
Tumblr media
Physically, she is extremely agile, fast, and strong. But it is mentally where Katana excels, as her intelligence is above average, and she is also an excellent strategist.
Tumblr media
"You made the choice to disfigure yourself, Dr. Elliot. The discomfort came with it. Still, if you are in pain, you should be happy that our first stop is Arkham. You can always commit yourself"
"She seems such a normal girl... then I remember she is actually a strange being, millions of years old"

The other history of the DC universe, vol. 3
Tumblr media
The other history of the DC universe, vol. 3
III - 1983 - 1996. Tatsu Yamashiro.
- John Ridley et al
The third volume tells the story of Katana, a fairly famous character who yet had never been regarded as an A-lister. Yet she has been an integral part of the more politically-minded side of DC superhero stories.
This volume became famous among the fans for two somewhat extraneous reasons: For proposing that Katana’s sword Soultaker is not in fact a mystical artifact (and that Tatsu herself was never a martial artist —that her entire training had been as a gymnast), and for her denouncement of the character Deathstroke, better known as Slade, for raping teenaged Tara, better known as Terra (“Not with physical force. He coerced an underage, mentally unstable girl into having sexual relationships with him. Again, and again, and again. And Slade used that sexual dominance to manipulate Tara.”). People debate the first as an unnecessary Retcon, the second as —and here the arguments get unreal.
Both discussions miss the point: That this series asks us to re-evaluate the stories we have read and taken as “fact” for years. Decades even. It’s not a simple “Everything you thought knew is a lie!” twist, but rather a shift in perspective. In this case, it is a tale about who defines our tales. The very first page, the very first lines even, lay the theme our for us: “The birthing process is a painful and bloody event. It is endured by women, but presided over by men. My birth, my metaphorical birth, was both excruciating and gory. And it was men who had dominion over it.”
In other words, it asks us to ponder who tells whose story and to what end? As narrator, Tatsu does not so much tell us her biography as challenge the way certain stories have been told —hers and others’.
Even the idea of a continuity in-series is delightfully challenged, taking advantage of the very fact that it is set in the long-running DC Universe itself. The previous two volumes mention the death of Supergirl, and Superman’s grief at it. This one tells us of Superman’s death, with Supergirl as one of the mourners. The comics have a reason for it —cosmic reboots, it was not the same person, and so on —but that is not the point. The point is the perspective each person brings with the tale they tell. For Katana, it’s not about grief, but about death or near-death experiences as a way to wrestle with our demons. Hauntings perhaps literal, perhaps mental —aren’t they all a little of both?
As this series progresses, the blending of real-life event and superhero stories feels increasingly more organic… allowing for the necessary suspension of disbelief, of course. What truly holds them together is the humane perspective. Tatsu’s relationship with a girl she takes care of for a few years, her wry yet poignant observations about societal evils (“I don’t mean to compare tragedies. The horrors that humanity too often inflicts on itself need and deserve to be understood singularly. Equally, we need to understand that evil is not something that other societies commit. It is something that all societies commit.”).
Very recommended, both as part of the series and by itself.

“THE PATH OF SLAUGHTER
Arms and Armour of Dark Elf Nobility
1 Main figure - Lord Yeurl of Clar Karond. Cold One Knight arrayed in full harness of war; double swords a sign of noble birth, trophy head bound in flesh thorns a symbol of taking the soul as well as the life of the victim. The knight does not arm himself but is arrayed by two squires in a ritual sequence. The leg harness (a) is strapped on first and attached at the top to an underbelt, then the rere brace (upper arm armour) is laced in position. The knight's chest is then anointed with the symbol of Khaine in purified blood. A long, flowing robe known as a khaitan is then worn. The khaitan is often made from rich silk patterned with spells and charms. This robe is a Dark Elf symbol of war, and is worn by knights as a sign of martial status and prowess when not armoured.
2 Over the tunic, a padded aketon with mail sleeves and a long mail skirt is worn (a). Called a dalakoi (lit. strength against death), the mail is lined with soft leather such as human or doeskin. This helps hold the mail in place. Back and breast plate (b) are then laced over the upper torso, sometimes these are one piece or also laminate strips for more flexibility. A short gorget (c) is then added. The pauldrons, or shoulder guards, appear to be more aesthetic than functional (d); they are laced directly to the breastplate through the gorget. Occasionally they are one piece but normally are made from two or three connected plates; the laces are often left visible at the front, and are decorated with flesh hooks at the ends.
Long gloves with armoured hands are laced tightly to the forearm, and over these are fitted vambraces (e). These appear to be one piece and held in place purely by the spring of the metal. They are often adorned with fighting spines — razor sharp blades which can trap and hold enemy blades as well as being weapons in their own right.
3 The helmet is a composite of separate parts. The main skull (a) follows a typical Dark Elf shape. The visor (b) is laced onto rings on the helmet (note the mail collar worn under the gorget), although often this is left off in battle to allow for maximum visibility in combat. The bevor (c) is laced directly and rigidly to the breastplate and makes a very effective guard for the vulnerable neck area.
4 Daggers and swords are slung on narrow crossbelts (a). The number of weapons a knight carries is a symbol of his status at the Witch King's court, with two blades being the most common. Shields (b) vary enormously in shape, though all seem to have a recurved tip at the base chat can be used as an offensive weapon. Lance tips (c) vary in shape and usually a long ribbon or pennant flutters beneath the tip. Runic script is often embroidered onto a knight's pennant, proclaiming their dedication to Malekith, their great deeds in his service and the noble history of their forefathers.
Also shown are two archaic weapons, only rarely seen in battle now, which are mostly used for ritual combat and duelling between the nobility. The shorter is known as a ghlaith (d), which means spineblade, and is used for a paralysing blow to the lower back or limbs. The longer blade is called a soultaker (e), lakelui in the Druchii tongue, and is used to dispatch the foe once they have been rendered defenceless. In such duels, failure to properly immobilise the foe before death will earn the displeasure of the audience and quite often leads to summary execution of the knight.
5 Flesh hooks — a selection of. Each is shaped as a Druchii rune, and the place and manner in which they are hung can tell a lot about a knight's allegiances, battle honours and family. With the flesh hooks are also hung janglers, known as keikalla or ‘spirit bells’, which serve a two-fold purpose. Firstly, the Druchii believe they ward away the most malicious of the magical spirits and entities that inhabit barren Naggaroth. Secondly, they serve to announce the presence of the knight, for unlike an Assassin or Shade, a knight rides proudly to battle in full view of his foes."
