Following our audio experiments we delved into visual production, experimenting with the Xbox Kinect and its detection of movement, as well as the projector displaying a film relating to our project's theme.

eine generationsübergreifende Modekollektion für Frauen*

In welchem Kleidungsstück fühlst du dich besonders wohl? Was schenkt dir Selbstvertrauen? Was ist dein ältestes Kleidungsstück? Von diesen Fragen gelenkt wurden Interviews mit Frauen verschiedenen Alters und in unterschiedlichen Lebenssituationen geführt. Losgelöst von Konfektionsgrößen entsteht eine Zero Waste Kollektion. Diese Interviews bilden das Grundgewebe für eine Ausstellung die als Gesamtwerk funktioniert: eine Modekollektion, eine Soundinstallation, Fotografien und Objekte vereinen vielschichtig die Gemeinsamkeiten und Schätze aus den Gesprächen. Dabei fließen Themen wie Nachhaltigkeit, Konsum, Familie und Nostalgie spielerisch aneinander vorbei und öffnen den Raum für weitere Unterhaltungen. Was ist dein Lieblingsstück? Machen Kleider wirklich Leute?

Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound

The SOUND/IMAGE research group is delighted to announce the AHRC funded project “Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound” hosted at the University of Greenwich.  

Where are all the black and South Asian experimental music artists?  

Researchers at the University of Greenwich aim to find out as part of a new 18-month UKRI-funded project.  

Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound aims to challenge institutional whiteness in experimental sound practice by investigating the creative identities of contemporary black and South Asian composers working in the UK.  

Research Fellow in Experimental Sound Dr Amit D. Patel is leading the project. He said: “Black and South Asian artists are some of the least represented within the genre of experimental sound. Our research seeks to tackle this lack of representation, raising the profile of diverse practices, highlighting potentials in pushing increased diversity, and seeking to challenge the invisibility of whiteness in the art form.”  

The research will involve observation of artists and their practices, interviews, and focus groups. The research will aim to unpack how these unique experiences are situated in relation to the structural and cultural contexts of experimental sound in the UK.  

Dr Andrew Knight-Hill, Senior Lecturer in Sound Design and Music Technology, added: “We are really excited to be working with an incredible array of artists and UK wide partners on this important research project, including Musicians Union, Sound & Music, Punch Records and a network of UK university music departments.  

“It is our goal that the outcomes of this project will help to effect change that makes experimental music more diverse. We’ll be developing policy guidelines which will help organisations as they seek to engage and encourage new artists to celebrate their diverse heritage and bring exciting new music/sound art to wider audiences.”

ein performativer Audiowalk

„roh.still“ verbindet Architekturrezeption mit Fragestellungen um die Institution Kirche: Der „performative Audiowalk“ schickt das Publikum mit Funkkopfhörern auf die Spuren brutalistischer Architektur und befragt die Bedeutung von Kirche in Stadt und Gesellschaft als Institution in Dauerkrise. Die „Bühne“ hierfür bietet die Kirche des Heiligen Johannes XXIII.: Hörspiel, Feature und Soundinstallation trifft auf Performance. schubert- stegemann sind dabei Theatermacherinnen, Autorinnen und Performerinnen. In „roh.still“ greifen sie die Ähnlichkeit von Theater und Kirche auf: Räume mit sich wiederholenden Verabredungen, hierarchisierten Abläufen, Verhaltenskodizes und Dramaturgien. Sie untersuchen die Performativität der Liturgie im sakralen Raum der Kirche des Heiligen Johannes XXIII.: Welche szenischen Möglichkeiten ergeben sich aus der Ko-Anwesenheit von (brutalistischer) Architektur und Mensch? Wie lässt sich diese (theatral) inszenieren und erleben? Wie entfaltet die Kirchen-Architektur ihre Wirkung? Welche kulturelle Bedeutung bleibt zurück, wenn immer weniger Menschen Kirchen als religiöse Stätten nutzen? Wie würde sich eine Umnutzung der Gebäude stadtsoziologisch auswirken, wie könnte diese aussehen? „roh.still“ begreift sich als Erprobung einer solchen Umnutzung und möchte Praktiken der Gemeinschaftsbildung befragen.
