hey. fun tip for you guys. if you’re identifying trees out in nature and you see an interesting and beautiful leaf growing on a tree, check whether it’s a part of the tree or a vine before you touch it. because it might be poison ivy

Ok so I saw you mention on your artblog that Ydris gave Rosma a very personal fortune when they first met, I know you said don't worry about it but I'm dying to know what he said to them if you don't mind sharing

Falls Colors ablaze - the reds have it
Sourwood ablaze in fall colors A Sourwood Tree Sets the Mountains Ablaze Along the Blue Ridge Parkway near where I called home for thirty years a beautiful Sourwood tree sets the granite mountainside afire. The sourwood tree is not only celebrated for its captivating appearance but is also famous for the unique and delicious honey produced from its nectar. This distinctively flavored honey, often…

Poffin's OC-tober - Old OC: Ruth Sourwood (8.10.23)
This section is dedicated to most of the OCs I created in grade school. Mostly Ruth, previously known as Hyaku Mikari in the chat RP Group with my childhood friends, due to this character surviving the brainworm space fight and surviving all the way through middle school alongside Lethia (their survival is more so in virtue of starting out as a self-insert OC). From a stolen fanart of an NGE character I found in a Quizilla quiz relating to which KHR character you’d date, she developed into her own thing that eventually jumped ship from her original fandom entirely.
While many aspects of her didn’t survive the transition; from her name, to the fact that the small Blackberry screen made me mistake the twintail from her fanart to a low singular ponytail; one thing that did make it out was her wielding of twin flintlocks. It was particularly perfect because the initial fandom that Ruth would jump into had its premise based on the Truth system of Seacats. Eventually that system would become a background for the “character drama” and plot that would envelope the original world. It’s fascinating how Ruth’s level-headedness ended up contrasting the madness I was throwing Lethia in with their arc, with her ending up as the one who keeps the Witch in check.
There’s always been the feeling of history between them that makes it so that Lethia does allow Ruth to limit their actions when I thought about and wrote their dynamic. In the end, I think even Ruth got tired of the Lethia I wrote back then considering I intended to make them irredeemable. Rather than letting her be stuck with Lethia, I decided to give her a buddy-cop journey with Fray in her search for her brother… who Lethia was keeping captive to take the place as a Witch as well. If I hadn’t gotten distracted, I’m sure the details of the conflict between these four would’ve been fun to write.

I want to make people see how much has been taken away from them.
Did you know that there are dozens of species of fireflies, and some of them light up with a blue glow? Did you know about the moths? There are thousands of them, bright pink and raspberry orange and checkerboard and emerald. They are called things like Black-Etched Prominent, Purple Fairy, Pink-Legged Tiger, Small Mossy Glyph and Black-Bordered Lemon.
Did you know that there are moths that feed on lichens? Did you know about the blue and green bees? The rainbow-colored dogbane beetles? Your streams are supposed to teem with newts, salamanders, crawdads, frogs, and fishes. I want to take you by the hand and show you an animal you've never seen before, and say, "This exists! It's real! It's alive!"
There are secret wildflowers that no website will show you and that no list entitled "native species to attract butterflies!" will name. Every day I'm at work I see a new plant I didn't know existed.
The purple coneflowers and prairie blazing star are a tidepool, a puddle, and there is an ocean out there. There are wildflowers that only grow in a few specific counties in a single state in the United States, there are plants that are evolved specifically to live underneath the drip line of a dolomite cliff or on the border of a glade of exposed limestone bedrock. Did you know that different species of moss grow on the sides of a boulder vs. on top of it?
There are obscure trees you might have never seen—Sourwood, Yellowwood, Overcup Oak, Ninebark, Mountain Stewartia, Striped Maple, American Hophornbeam, Rusty Blackhaw, Kentucky Coffeetree. There are edible fruits you've never even heard of.
And it is so scary and sad that so many people live and work in environments where most of these wondrous living things have been locally extirpated.
There are vast tracts of suburb and town and city and barren pasture where a person could plausibly never learn of the existence of the vast majority of their native plants and animals, where a person might never imagine just how many there are, because they've only ever been exposed to the tiny handful of living things that can survive in a suburb and they have no reason to extrapolate that there are ten thousand more that no one is talking about.
It's like being a fish that has lived its whole life in a bucket, with no way of imagining the ocean. The insects in your field guide are a fraction of those that exist, of all the native plants to your area only a handful can be bought in a nursery.
Welcome to the Earth! It's beautiful! It's full of life! More things are real and beautiful and alive than a single person could imagine!!!

From last fall: One of the reddest reds on the landscape, associates with ericaceous heath belts with minimal light competition. So mainly dry sandstone with shallow nutrient poor soils and good drainage or sandstone barrens. Due to slow growth and an acidic weathering effect associated with the bark cortex and the water retention these species also tend to have incredible lichen diversity.
Citheronia regalis horn devil larva are associated as the primary moth that eats these leaves.
Oxydendrum arboreum
Sourwood, or some call it sour bark tree, chewing on the bark and active phloem was once common practice to alleviate the nerve pain associated with toothaches. The leaves themselves are an anti-gas, anti-inflammatory laxative(strong one at that). In some cases a tea can be made of the leaves that also aids in other issues and have been used to treat urinary infections by native people and early settlers to the Appalachian mountains and ilp.
Right now at llanfair permaculture we have an interesting soil dynamic that may be accessible for species like this due to good drainage and high organic comp as well as good lighting, the other thing is that these seeds don't seem to require any specialized treatment to germinate.
