I’m an our flag means death fan and I’m watching pirates of the Caribbean for the first time since I was a small child. Here’s what I have learned:

the aesthetics of piracy are always homoerotic, regardless of if they are intended to be that way.

human toe consumption is a weirdly common theme of the Pirate genre. Like I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Historical pirates are dead enough and poorly documented enough that you can truly do whatever you want with them. Nothing puts this into starker relief than the venn diagram of Calico Jack (OFMD) and Jack Sparrow’s center including nothing other than “Pirate, Always Drunk, Gay, and loosely Based on the historical figure of Calico Jack Rakham” They are completely different characters, you can just fuck around when it comes to characterizations and events. Might watch Black Sails and make that venn diagram actually. (Edit: I had heard that Jack Sparrow was based on Calico Jack it turns out he was based on Jack Ward. Still I feel like when I watch Black Sails the point that I have made here will stand even if I made it while operating under an incorrect assumption)

Elizabeth Swann and Jack Sparrow are going to non canonically share a boyfriend before all of this is over I can smell it.

I’ve already cosplayed Calico Jack in the OFMD way, might be fun to do it in the Pirates of the Caribbean way, who knows. Probably not, but I could.

Another Genre trope I’ve noticed is sexy black woman with establishment that contains dubious jars full of severed body parts. I support her. Which her? don’t care! Tia Dalma and Spanish Jackie are both Chads of the highest order and I will be uncritically stanning them.

Ive been meaning to rewatch ofmd for a couple days too... the show and the fic/meta have such different tones (which is fair and good most of the time) that Ive caught myself getting too deep into the various wank threads and Ive forgotten!! What the show is like to experience!!! There's a balance of comedy and dark shit in the show that is just not there in the fandom experience if that makes sense? Would like to revisit the show and see more clearly what gets distorted over time exposed only to fanon. Five hours of peace are hard to come by though

Hola! Thanks for the ask! I absolutely love being in the Our Flag Means Death fandom in the broader sense. I went to an OFMD fandom meetup at SDCC (Idk if you saw the pics) and it was super fun. I even dressed up in an homage to Spanish Jackie for my first cosplay ever XD

But, I have avoided the online OFMD fandom like the plague.

The first OFMD twitter thread I went on (I KNOW better than to read qrts for 'unpopular opinions' I KNOW better but sometimes I'm dumdum and I do anyway) was just a long line of people being so insufferable my brain almost leaked out my ear. Nonny, I turned and ran.

The show is just so joyful and absurd, I don't want to ruin that!

So, I have not read meta. I have only read two fics and they were one shots by witcher writers I already sub to. I even have two OFMD character names muted on like every platform I'm on.

As much as I adore all the good things about fandom, it can be exhausting knowing about all the online feuds, critiques, and controversies. I only have the energy to interact with one fandom like that, and I've already fallen into the witcher, so I'm full up. It's like how I feel about being the mother of one child. I love being a mom. But one is enough. lmao

So I will rewatch the show in ignorant bliss for the most part.

But, I will say, if anyone has any OFMD fandom stuff that's absolutely amazing that you think I need to see and you want to feed it to me directly so I don't have to see all the wank, I'll happily accept and enjoy it.

Our Flag Means Death is antiracist in a lot of ways, it’s queer, and it’s an adult comedy, so I guess I had hoped coming into this fandom that it would be better than other fandoms. I hoped that the fact that it is catered towards a minority group would lead to a fan base with a better understanding of systemic oppression, that an adult fan base would be able to pick up the themes of the show better than the mixed ages fandoms I’ve been in before, that the themes of antiracism would lead the racist white people to abandon the show around episode 2 when Stede gets put on trial for being white. That hope has lead me to give people in this fandom a lot of the benefit of the doubt, but boy you guys are stretching my limits. I want this fandom to be safe for people of color. I want to see more Roach and Spanish Jackie and Fang cosplays. I want my black and brown mutuals on this site to make more silly little posts about whatever blorbos make them happy. I want people of color to be able to write fic and make fan art without being worried about harassment, and I want them to be able to read fic and look at fanart without having to see a ton of racist tropes. I’ve been a cosplayer for almost a decade now, and I’ve seen first hand black cosplayers who were doing exactly the same thing that I’m doing except for doing it while black get chased off of instagram because of the harassment. I know that some people don’t partake in fandom spaces online because they see it as a white space. And I know that some people probably came out of the shadows for this show because they saw people on screen who looked like them and thought like I did that maybe this time it would be different, and I want them to be right. I don’t want black and brown people to abandon this fandom because it get’s too toxic. That’s why I’m yelling about racism in the fandom now, while it’s still kind of early.

One thing I hope for in season 2 is that we get at least 1 more husband murderer so that me and the cosplay girlies can make a cmv to cell block tango. I call Ed. Mary, Evelyn, Spanish Jackie, and Swede cosplayers hit me up. (swede because he also don't speak english as well and he is not guilty)
