My current WIP has a lot of Specht in it as a supporting character and he's described as a "grizzled sailor" in the books. And I just realized who I've been picturing him as in my head:

Jezelf Leren Kennen

Happy Galentine's Day, Happy Tuesday, and uh, well, Happy Prequel Publishing Day!

I've put up the first two chapters of the prequel to my series Kanej Wensen, Jezelf Leren Kennen, on A03. These first two chapters are Inej POV and Kaz POV, very much back to back, and mirroring each other. We get to see the time before Inej leaves on her first voyage from each of their perspectives.

Jezelf Leren Kennen (Learning To Know Oneself) exists in the space directly after Crooked Kingdom, during KoS/RoW. Exploring Inej’s reunion with her parents, her discovery of who she can be as Captain Ghafa, hunting slavers and doling out justice, and her path to reclaiming her own body and sexuality. Exploring Kaz building his empire in the Barrel, and his journey through practicing touch and examining his armor; seeing him hit despair, and clawing his way back out again.

I plan to post a chapter a day (or so) from here on out. Please enjoy!

[ATEEZ X Six of Crows] Choi Jongho as Specht (only cooler if that's even possible)

Choi Jongho’s home has always been the True Sea.

Ever since he could remember, he was living and breathing the sea and its many dangers, moving from merchant ships to navy vessels and learning the craft of surviving her volatile love. That’s how he ended up in the Navy. But sailing wasn’t the only craft he’d learned out in the world, because the sea was his true love, but forging became his forte. And his downfall.

When he found himself without his home, swallowed and spat back by the unforgiving depth of Ketterdam, not even the lousiest crew wanted to hire him. But one gaunt kid, with eyes darker than the depth of a maelstrom, picked him up from the streets.

And Jongho became his shadow.

His job was to be forgettable, to blend into the Horizon crew and build a steady base for Hongjoong’s coup. He helped to clear up the Fifth Harbour; he spent hours at the Exchange to find the best ships to intercept; he patrolled the halls of the Crow Club and watched the crew for weak links.

In exchange, he was promised a ship for him and the Wraith, the shadow and the spectre, to leave once the deal was done. Once Kim Hongjoong stood on top of the body of his worst enemy, they were both promised freedom and new dreams.

The deal was the deal.

But when everything almost fell apart before they could embark on the one job that could pay for their every wish, he took matters into his own hands.

Jongho’s true home was the True Sea and once he was back in her violent embrace, with blood drying on the deck and a ragtag band of misfits coming apart at the seams around him, he decided to protect the new home he built with his own hands.

Choi Jongho crawled out of obscurity to stand behind Kim Hongjoong, to become the shadow he was meant to be.

Some great spotted woodpeckers, in these case male ones as you can easily identify by the red nape patch.

And they are not always up in the trees. And the red patch on the top of the head indicates that this is a juvenile bird. Maybe that is why this youngster decided to forage the ground rather than trees.
