Saudi woman first swimmer to cross Dubai Creek, Dubai Water Canal

“I want to extend my warmest appreciation and gratitude to Sheikh Hamdan for his gracious patronage of the event.”

Being the first woman ever to swim the entire length of the River Thames in London – all 162km – was not enough for Saudi dentist and humanitarian, Dr Mariam Saleh Binladen. So much so, that this weekend she set another impressive record by becoming the first swimmer to cross the Dubai Creek and the Dubai Water Canal.

At 5am on Friday, while most residents lay sleeping in their beds, Mariam set off from the canal’s Dubai Creek entrance in the Al Shindagha to embark on a selfless feat as part of her continued pledge to support orphaned Syrian refugees. Covering a total distance of 24km, Mariam completed the feat at 2.10pm after landing up at Al Ghubaiba Station next to the Four Seasons Hotel. After battling nine hours and 10 minutes through strong currents at the entrance and mouth of the canal, an exhausted Mariam said she was “thrilled and delighted” to become the first person to complete the 24km swim along the “wonderful, yet challenging, Dubai Water Canal”.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, this incredible feat will now be added to a long list of selfless acts which she has spearheaded for the sake of refugee children. It will also see her add yet another string to her tally of world records.

In 2016, Mariam undertook a series of incredible, world-record breaking initiatives. As well as becoming the first woman to cross the River Thames, the UK-born, Jeddah-raised dentist also became the first Saudi woman to complete an assisted swim across the English Channel (34km),.

And in 2015, she swam the Hellespont open water swim in Turkey. Upon crossing the finishing line she was noted as the first Saudi female to complete the race from Europe to Asia. Working alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mariam has so far raised more than half a million dollars for children in Syria through her challenging swims, and she said she will continue to do so.

Friday’s event, held in collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai Maritime City Authority, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Dubai Police and Marine Rescue, saw Mariam pass through some of Dubai’s most striking landmarks, but she managed to kept focused as exhaustion set in.

After reaching the finishing line, she thanked all who supported her. “I want to extend my warmest appreciation and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his gracious patronage of the event, and to the team members who worked really hard over the past month to make this great event a memorable success.”

And in an appreciative nod to all that turned up to cheer her on, Mariam said their encouragement helped her complete the challenge. “It was a very challenging experience indeed, given that my preparation time was extremely short, barely one month of preparations to make this event happen.

So, I am really happy to have completed the swim successfully, which would not have happened without the amazing support of my family, my crew, my trainer, Fiona, the team from DSC and all the other parties that were involved in this event,” she further added.

She said the event was part of her continued efforts to raise awareness for the plight of thousands of orphaned Syrian refugees who have lost their parents and guardians, and have been uprooted from their homes, and scattered across different parts of the world.

“I also wanted to motivate more and more women from the Arab World to take on sports and use their talents to achieve the unachievable, knowing that nothing is impossible,” she said.

USS John P. Murtha amphibious transport dock ship returns from 7-month deployment

The U.S. Navy said that the amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), returned to San Diego.

The Sailors and Marines of the John P. Murtha, part of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), returned to their homeport of San Diego, Nov. 27, following a successful seven-month deployment to the 7th and 5th Fleet operating areas.

Throughout deployment, the units of Boxer ARG participated in exercises with multinational partners and allies throughout the Indo-Pacific and Middle East regions, which strengthened partnerships, increased combat readiness and crisis response capabilities, and communication between U.S. and partner nation forces. In the Western Pacific, Sailors and Marines participated in multilateral exercises, including Tiger Strike with Malaysia; Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training with Brunei; and KAMANDAG 3 with the Philippines. Each exercise presented an opportunity for the amphibious task force to conduct training with each nation’s armed forces and tackle different challenges together.

USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) represented the ARG when they pulled into Visakhapatnam, India, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to promote regional security cooperation, strengthen maritime partnerships and enhance interoperability among participating forces. The Sailors and Marines of John P. Murtha and the 11th MEU built people-to-people relationships through professional exchanges, symposia, sporting events and community service projects.

“The Sailors of John P. Murtha and Marines of the 11th MEU demonstrated teamwork, pride, and professionalism during the ship’s first deployment,” said Capt. Kevin Lane, commanding officer of John P. Murtha. “Every task we were handed, from multi-national exercises to port visits, the blue/green team displayed the best of themselves and the best of the United States. It’s been an honor to lead and serve with these men and women and to be a part of the John P. Murtha family.”

Saudi women celebrate news they will finally be allowed to drive

SAUDI ARABIA — Women in Saudi Arabia have been celebrating the news that they will finally be able to drive, a landmark step that brings the conservative kingdom in line with the rest of the world and will allow many more women to work.

The Saudi Foreign ministry announced Tuesday that a royal decree has been issued that will allow women to drive by next June.

“This is a historic big day in our kingdom,” Prince Khaled bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the US, said Tuesday in a briefing with reporters.

The move follows years of activism and appeals both from within and outside the Gulf nation.

Kholoud Attar, a 32-year-old Saudi designer and magazine owner who has been running her business for 10 years, told CNN the change would make a “huge difference” both to her and to her female employees.

“Being able to drive really facilitates a lot of logistics and helps with shaving off the time to get things done,” she said. “It’s so thrilling to be able to do this.”

For her female workers, the biggest gain will be in not having to pay for a driver or other transportation out of their salaries, Attar said. Employing a driver currently eats up a third of the average monthly salary for her staff members, who may also have to find the money for their children’s care or education, she said.

As for those who remain opposed to women driving, Attar said, their voices “just became much quieter” thanks to the government saying it would be allowed.

‘Life will be faster’

Nouf Alosaimi, a 29-year-old diving instructor based in Jeddah, told CNN that even with a driver, it was a hassle arranging trips and scheduling work appointments.

“Life will be faster,” she said, adding that she was looking forward most of all to the adventure that will come with driving her own car.

“I live in a country that I can’t explore,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to explore the kingdom’s coasts… I can’t take someone I don’t know to drive me to these places and my brothers are too busy to take me on long trips.”

Alosaimi, who recently returned to Saudi Arabia from abroad because of an increase in demand for diving among women, said the decision would increase tourism revenues, not just because of the expected increase in women tourists but also thanks to women-run tourism businesses.

Manal al-Sharif, one of the women behind the Women2Drive campaign in Saudi Arabia, celebrated the victory Tuesday by posting a photo on Twitter of herself behind the wheel of a car.

Sharif, who now lives in Australia, was jailed in Saudi Arabia 2011 after posting a video on YouTube of herself, wearing a black headscarf and sunglasses, driving a car. The act provoked death threats and spurred her to start the campaign.

In another tweet, the campaigner said: “Saudi Arabia will never be the same again. The rain begins with a single drop.”

When Saudi women first defied the driving ban

Restrictive rules remain

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia follows a strict form of Wahhabi Islam that bans the mixing of sexes at public events and places numerous curbs on women, including needing the permission of a male guardian to work or travel. These restrictions are enforced by religious police.

Saudi women will not have to get permission from their male guardians to take driving lessons, ambassador bin Salman told CNN.

However, rules that govern the guardianship of women will continue to restrict many aspects of everyday life for the country’s female population.

Liesl Gerntholtz, executive director of the Women’s Rights Division at Human Rights Watch, told CNN that while being allowed to drive was a “very important step,” there was still a long way to go for Saudi women.

“This prohibition on driving is just one in a vast series of laws and policies which prevent women from doing many things,” she said. “The guardianship rule stops women from making every decision in her life without the assistance of a male relative, even if that relative is her 7-year-old son.”

Economic gains

The move to ease some restrictions on women has huge implications for the Saudi economy and women’s ability to work. It is the latest in a series of changes that have been rippling through Saudi Arabia since the rise of 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The crown prince, appointed to the position by his father in June, is spearheading a plan to reform and transform the Saudi economy by 2030 and, in line with that goal, increase the number of women in the workforce.

Marriam Mossalli, a Saudi entrepreneur who founded a Jeddah-based consultancy firm specializing in luxury marketing, Niche Arabia, told CNN that “with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, things are happening quite quickly, at a ‘millennial’ speed,” compared with the past — and that her generation had already witnessed many firsts.

The decision to let women drive will allow the debate to move on to other, more important issues, she said, after years of sensationalized media coverage focused on that one question.

“We can go now beyond that and look at the real issues we have, more entrepreneurs, more women in the workforce, and this is why the ban was lifted, to facilitate putting women in the workforce,” she said.

“A driver can be costly, around $400-800 a month, while an average entry level income for a woman working for example as a school teacher is $1,600… almost half of your salary is going to a driver. This is an economical decision and a human rights one.”

Mossalli, a social media influencer whose company helped to organize the first public sports day for women in Saudi history, added: “Being conservative and contemporary are not mutually exclusive. You can be a modern conservative Saudi.”

Religious body supports decree

The Saudi Senior Scholars Council, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body, “commended” the royal order allowing women to drive in a statement Wednesday, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

“The majority of the members of the Senior Scholars Council said that the religious ruling allows women’s driving of vehicles and they do not see what prevents women from driving vehicles in the light of religious and regulatory guarantees to maintain and respect women,” SPA said of the statement.

The Saudi Ministry of Culture said allowing women to drive was in line with the leadership’s vision for the country and would bring both economic and social benefits.

“It constitutes another important measure in a series of steps aiming to enable all Saudis to take part in the nation’s development,” Culture Minister Awwad Alawwad said in a statement. “The decision emphasizes the continuation of the Kingdom’s trajectory of reform and development.”

The leadership will ensure that the infrastructure is in place to support the change, he added, including setting up driving schools so women can take lessons.

The United States and Britain on Tuesday banned larger electronic devices from the passenger cabin on flights from some airports in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa.

American officials warned that extremists are seeking "innovative" ways to attack airliners with smaller explosive devices hidden in consumer electronics bigger than smartphones.

The US has given nine airlines from eight countries until the weekend to tell travelers to America to pack laptops, tablets and portable game consoles in their hold luggage.

No US carriers are affected, but the ban hits passengers on approximately 50 flights per day from the busiest hubs in the Arab world and the three Gulf carriers that recently emerged as giants: Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways.

Britain issued a similar order, applied to direct flights from a shorter list of countries. Other countries are expected to follow suit. Canadian and French officials are considering a ban, but Germany said it was not.

"The restrictions are in place due to evaluated intelligence and we think it's the right thing to do and the right places to do it to secure the safety of the traveling public," a senior US official said.

US officials would not say how long the ban would last, but the Dubai-based Emirates airline told AFP that it had been instructed to enforce it until at least October 14.

The US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, refused to discuss the "intelligence information" that led the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to issue the order.

But one said concerns had been "heightened by several successful events and attacks on passenger lanes and airports over the last years."

Reaction from the affected airports' host governments was generally low-key, and Emirates turned the situation into a light-hearted ad extolling the strengths of its in-flight entertainment, entitled: "Who needs a laptop?"

But one government, Turkey, denounced the order and demanded that it be rescinded or scaled back.

"We particularly emphasize how this will not benefit the passenger and that reverse steps or a softening should be adopted," Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan told reporters.

"We already take all kinds of security measures," he said.

Innovative methods The US official would not go into detail about which attacks had raised fears, but one cited an incident from February of last year in which suspected Somali Islamists blew a hole in the side of a Daallo Airlines passenger jet with a small device. Only the bomber was killed and the plane landed safely.

"Evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation and are aggressively pursuing innovative methods to undertake their attacks, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items," an official said.

CNN quoted a US official as saying the ban was believed to be related to a threat posed by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

ABC News reported that fresh intelligence indicated Islamic State associates were developing ways to smuggle electronics loaded with explosives on flights headed for the US.

The airports touched by the ban are Queen Alia International in Amman, Jordan; Cairo International in Egypt; Ataturk in Istanbul, Turkey; King Abdulaziz International in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; King Khalid International in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Kuwait International; Mohammed V International in Casablanca, Morocco; Hamad International in Doha, Qatar; and the Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports in the United Arab Emirates.

The US ban will hit flights operated by Royal Jordanian, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways.

The British ban only involves six countries, two of which - Lebanon and Tunisia - do not feature on the US list. The change affects six British airlines, including British Airways and EasyJet, and eight foreign carriers.

'Proportional to threat' US lawmakers said they had been briefed over the weekend on the classified intelligence behind the ban, and the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said he backed it.

"These steps are both necessary and proportional to the threat," Adam Schiff said.

"We know that terrorist organizations want to bring down aircraft and have continued to employ creative ways to try and outsmart detection methods."

Tom Blank, a former head of security at TSA, told AFP: "This bears the mark of a response to some specific set of the intelligence data that has come to the attention of US authorities."

Airlines will be responsible for policing the cabin ban, and if they fail to do so, they could lose their rights to operate US routes.
