#TBT to that time when I was walking to our vehicle with my family & ran into 2 of the beautiful ladies from my favorite show Heartland!! I had just played a show at the Spruce Meadows ‘National’ in Calgary, Alberta & was watching the stunning athlete horses & riders compete in the Skybox. (Thanks to the team @ Spruce Meadows who brought us in to sing!) I had some of my relatives with me & had JUST said about a 1/2 hour before to my aunts “most of anything I know about horses is what I’ve learned from the show Heartland”. Kind of laughing about it! They knew of the show but didn’t watch it & I was gushing to them about how great it is & family friendly, but it also covers ALL kinds of real life situations in a classy, earthy, appropriate way. There are some hard times in the show for sure-but they get through them-together. During the pandemic, a friend suggested it & my kids & I fell in love with it. When they would go to their dads I would have to patiently await their return before I could move forward in the series. (Although I did watch ahead one time & had to go back & rewatch with the kids-they were not happy with me!). I truly love this show. Sooooooo…..I had just left the skybox to leave & who did I run into? None other than Lisa Stillman-Jack Bartlett’s wife & horse owner & expert (real name-Jessica Steen) and Jessica Cook-Tim Fleming’s wife (real name Michelle Nolden). I was like “oh my-hi-I just love your show” they were so kind & then I went to walk away & turned around & said “I think I have to get a picture with you-my kids are going to love that I met you-I LOVE that I met you-but I’d love to show them when I get home”. So the ladies were VERY gracious & took this picture with me. There is a better one of me smiling bigger but one of the ladies eyes were half open & I didn’t want to show that one so this is the one. If you want a show that has a ton of real life experiences, uses horses to learn many life lessons & can watch it with your kids-this is the show. There is a reason there are 16 seasons. Soooooo good! I can’t promise you won’t cry or go through ALL the emotions with this show-in fact I can guarantee you will. It’s a RIDE!🐴🐴🐴

Here's a treat for fans of the TV version of The Last of Us: the famous carousel in its natural habitat - Spruce Meadows equestrian park in Calgary during this weekend's International Christmas Market. In typical Alberta understated fashion there's no indication that the merry-go-round had played a major role in a TV show.

(Originally built in the US, it was installed at the Chinook Centre shopping mall in Calgary for about 20 years, the last 10 or so of that as a centrepiece of its food court. A few years ago renovations resulted in it being removed, at which point it was installed on the grounds of Spruce Meadows, where is was used for a few years but is now just for show. It was dismantled to moved to another Calgary landmark, Northland Village Mall, which was about to undergo reconstruction into a new format (contrary to media reports, it was never abandoned or even closed - several of its businesses still operate, but it is being "de-malled" into an open-air type of plaza which makes perfect sense in a place where deep freeze is a fact of life during winter).

My photo has been retouched slightly to obscure a couple of recognizable faces. It was tough getting a shot without kids in it...

Here are some neat mushrooms I met during a recent group foray!

Left: Albatrellus confluens (sheep polypore) -- an edible polypore that's shaped like a mushroom instead of a shelf. Some say they smell like Froot Loops!

Right: Rhodocollybia butyracea -- When fresh, the caps on these mushrooms have a butterlike smooth greasiness (thus the name).

Left: Cudonia sp. (circinans?) These are ascomycetes, meaning they're more closely related to cup fungi. The mycologist leading the foray claimed this cluster I found for his collection!

Right: Making an unexpected summer appearance, it's Flammulina velutipes, the wild version of the cultivated enoki! The darkened foot of the "stipe" (stem) has a delightful velvety texture.

Left: Trichaptum subchartaceum -- From above, it's shades of white and gray, but the pore surface of this polypore is a striking lilac!

Right: Lactarius sp. (maculatipes or similar) I'm holding this one upside-down so you can really appreciate all the features that make it weird: A "scrobiculate" (pitted) stipe and an intensely "viscid" (slimy) coating on its stipe and cap. As a bonus, this guy is SPICY -- a tiny nibble (spat back out rather than swallowed) left the tip of my tongue completely numb.
