Marleau. Thornton. Pavelski. Three of the best forwards to ever play the game. Nary a single Stanley Cup amongst them. And now, with Dallas’ elimination, and Pavelski’s retirement announcement, that’s going to be how the cement dries for good on the tortured legacy of almost-greatness that was the 2010s San Jose Sharks.

It is patently unfair. It is heartbreaking. It is a great injustice. They were all ambassadors of the sport. They were champions in every single way except the one that they wanted most.

Happy retirement, Pavs. From this Leafs fan, I say this — I was rooting for the Stars, for no other reason than to see him get one.

Wyatt frowned and chewed harder on her mouth guard as the buzzer rung out through the arena.

The Dallas stars lost 0-4 against the Maple leafs.

Wyatt could see the disappointment coming from Jake and she knew he was beating himself up harder than usual from this game, but it was not just his fault the team lost, it was the whole team they all didn’t play good.

Wyatt waited as the rest of the team hugged and head patted Jake and she waited to be last.

Wyatt gave him a soft smile and leaned up hugging him tightly, Jake let out a breath and hugged her back.

Wyatt pulled back and bonked their foreheads together before giving him extra head pats, he deserves head pats even when they lose.

“Come on.” Wyatt spoke softly and pulled Jake off the ice and away from all the eyes.

Wyatt let Jake go once they got into the locker room and headed to her stall and let out a small noticeable sight of relief when she didn’t have to do media.

She showered and changed back into her game day suit and sat back down on her stall and brushed out her wet hair and looked over seeing Jake slowly moving and could tell he was still upset about the game.

Wyatt grabbed her phone and water bottle and walked over to Jake and plopped down in his stall as he stood buttoning up his shirt.

Jake raised an eyebrow at her as she sat in front of him but she only just shrugged smiling softly making him shake his head fondly.

Joe saw her sitting with Jake and knew she would be getting a ride home from him as he knows she likes to hang out with Jake after a game especially tough loss, he smiled softly he knew she feels something for Jake but he doesn’t think she realized yet that she feels something for Jake.

Jake grabbed his phone, wallet and keys and started walking out and was not all that surprised when Wyatt followed him, his heart softened for fondness for Wyatt just as it always does for her.

Wyatt has learned pretty quickly that Jake can get in his head after a game that he thinks he played bad and tends to be pretty hard on himself.

She saw that it she gave him a few minutes of quiet letting him think and then started talking it kept him from spiraling and she wanted to be a good friend and teammate.

They walked together out to the parking garage and Jake opened up the passenger door for Wyatt before he walked around and hopped into the driver’s seats.

Jake started the car and drove them out of the parking garage and away from the arena.

“Did i tell you about the french toast i had yesterday?” Wyatt perked up thinking about the amazing breakfast she ate yesterday with Sarah and Nate as she sat in the passenger seat in Jake’s car.

Jake shook his head no.

“It was so good! You have to come when i go next!” Wyatt beamed at Jake and her smile got even brighter when she noticed his small smile, his first smile all night.

Jake had a terrible day but sitting in the car and listening to Wyatt yap, something she rarely does with anyone that isn’t him, made him happy.

let me say another thing: this cup run has given me such a bitterness toward the hockey establishment and the way they treat southern / non traditional market teams. from the refs to the announcers to the commentators at intermission to the journalists, it’s been made clear that they’ll never see our equal talent as exciting, our narratives as compelling, our goals as deserving of loud celebration, when compared to traditional market teams. we are fighting an uphill battle and we certainly ain’t gonna quit, but it is exhausting and infuriating.

every time i see a poorly designed nhl rule i immediately compile it into a yearly report i send to the san jose sharks to use to their favor exactly one (1) time so that the league will repeal it. don't worry yall there will be no terrible offsides challenges this time next year.
