SR-71 is on display at the SAC Museum in Ashland, Nebraska. Many folks may recall the SAC Museum in Bellevue, Nebraska, just north of Offutt AFB. In 1998, the new museum moved indoors to its current home in Ashland, which is much more accessible to the public. The new building also allowed the aircraft to be moved indoors and protected from the elements to which they had previously been exposed. The name of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Museum was officially changed to the Strategic Air & Space Museum.
In 2015, the museum announced another name change to the current Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum to reconnect to the museum's original mission of preserving the history of the Strategic Air Command while promoting interest in aviation and science among the general public. After the end of the Cold War and the shutdown of SAC, the State of Nebraska built a new building for the SAC Museum. It is just off Interstate 80, about halfway between Lincoln and Omaha.
The SR-71 is dramatically displayed in the museum atrium.
Why, Nebraska? After the end of World War II, it was determined that the Midwest was the safest place in America in case of a nuclear war. Today that is not true; Russia has the entire United States covered.

76-0174 USAF Rockwell B-1A Lancer bomber - a rare visitor to the Farnborough Airshow in 1982 by Heathrow Junkie Via Flickr: Air shows of the 1970s-1980s The Military Collection - bombers Seen on static display - 76-0174 a Rockwell B-1A bomber - one of the highlights of the 1982 Farnborough Air Show. It wasn't in the best position to get a good photo :) This was my fourth visit to Farnborough, after debuting at the 1976 Air Show. In 1982, I also took the opportunity to make a follow-up visit on the Monday morning to see some of the departing aircraft. One of only four B-1As built, 76-0174 is now preserved at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum near Ashland, Nebraska. This aircraft has conventional ejection seats and other features used on the B-1B variant. B-29 (TB) Stratofortress "Lucky Lady" 44-84076 by Kelly Michals Via Flickr: Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum Specifications Aircraft Type: B-29(TB) Boeing (Bell) Super Fortress, S/N 44-84076 Mission: Heavy Bomber Number Built: The Army Air Force accepted a grand total of 3,960 B-29s: 3,943 B-29s, 3 XB-29s (including the experimental plane which crashed before delivery), and 14 B-29 prototypes. Actually, B-29, B-29As, and B-29Bs made up the production total. The B-29 and B-29A were alike and barely differed from the B-29B. The B-model was about 2,000 pounds lighter than the A, had an extra 150 feet in service ceiling, and a slightly longer range. Powerplant Four supercharged Wright R-3550-W57 Double Cyclone radial, air-cooled engines; 2,200 horsepower each. Weight: Maximum 133,500 lbs. Dimensions Wingspan 141’3″ Length 99′ Height 27’9″ Performance Maximum speed 357 MPH Cruising speed 220 MPH Range 3,700 miles Service Ceiling 33,600 feet The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the most advanced bomber aircraft to see operation service in World War II. The Army Air Force used it in low-level, night incendiary attacks against Japan. The aircraft also successfully aerial-mined the waters surrounding the Japanese mainland during WWII. The Enola Gay, arguably the most famous B-29, dropped the world’s first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, 1945 another B-29 named Bockscar dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. When SAC was established in 1946 it exclusively used B-29s. They were used in the conventional bombing role during the Korean War (1950-1953). B-29s flew their final bomber mission in 1954 , thereafter serving SAC in specialized roles such as reconnaissance and as tanker aircraft. The Museum’s B-29 was manufactured by Bell Aircraft, in Marietta, Georgia and delivered to the USAAF on August 4, 1945.

Why NORAD Tracks Santa Claus
December 21st, 2020, 2:07PM / BY Amelia Grabowski
Tumblr media
Gen. Glen VanHerck, Commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command talks on the phone as part of a video celebrating the NORAD Santa Tracker’s 65th year.
On November 30, 1955, a phone rang on Col. Harry Shoup’s desk at Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). CONAD was tasked with watching for a Soviet attack by air and alerting Strategic Air Command. In the midst of the Cold War, a phone call to Colonel Shoup’s desk could have brought critical news for national security.
Tumblr media
Colonel Harry Shoup became known as the “Santa Colonel” due to his role in establishing the tradition of NORAD tracking Santa’s safe flight. (U.S. Air Force)
However, when Colonel Shoup answered, the little voice on the other end asked “Is this Santa Claus?”
“There may be a guy called Santa Claus, at the North Pole, but he’s not the one I worry about coming from that direction,” was Shoup’s reply, according to an article that ran the following day. One can only imagine how the young caller reacted.
Why call CONAD to reach Santa? It all started with a misdial. That year, Sears ran an ad where Santa invited young people to “Call me direct on my telephone.” However, one caller didn’t heed the ad’s warning to “be sure and dial the correct number,” and instead reached Colonel Shoup—sparking a chain of events that would become a Christmas tradition.
Tumblr media
A 1955 Sears’ ad inviting children to call Santa on his personal phone. (Sears)
The week of Christmas, Shoup’s staff added Santa and his sleigh to the plexiglass map CONAD used to track unidentified aircraft. The joke sparked an idea and CONAD told press they “will continue to track and guard Santa and his sleigh on his trip to and from the U.S. against possible attack from those who do not believe in Christmas.”
Journalist Matt Novak of Gizmodo points out that both Shoup and CONAD’s responses were less “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” and more “Yes, Virginia, there is a Cold War.” Their messaging, that CONAD was there to protect Santa against threats, aligned with a larger media campaign focusing on the importance of air defense.
However, the Cold War wasn’t the first time the U.S. military reported seeing Santa. According to Yoni Appelbaum for The Atlantic, during World War II, General Eisenhower issued a press release confirming “a new North Pole Command has been formed … Santa Claus is directing operations … He has under his command a small army of gnomes,” although the censored version cut out the location of Santa’s headquarters. In 1948, the Air Force reported one of their early warning radars had detected “one unidentified sleigh, powered by eight reindeer, at 14,000 feet, heading 180 degrees.”
CONAD would soon set itself apart from these earlier messages of Santa Claus levity. In 1956, one year after Colonel Shoup spoke with the young caller, the Associated Press and United Press International called to ask if Shoup’s team planned to track Santa again, and CONAD confirmed they did. In 1958, the newly established North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) continued—and grew—the tradition.
In the 1960s, NORAD sent records to radio stations with updates on Santa’s path to play for their listeners. The 1970s brought with it Santa Tracker commercials. By 1997, Santa Tracker went digital—launching the website may of our younger readers will be familiar with. (Which has, of course, received some enhancements since then.)
How NORAD tracks Santa has also evolved over the years. Their website explains that they now use a combination of radar, satellites that “detect Rudolph’s bright red nose with no problem,” and jet fighters. “Canadian NORAD fighter pilots, flying the CF-18, take off out of Newfoundland and welcome Santa to North America,” explains NORAD, and in the United States, “American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15s, F16s or F-22s get the thrill of flying with Santa.”

So today we are grocery shopping, then I might do a surprise trip and go to the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. I’m not sure though depends on how late it is. We are also looking for a crockpot today, I used to use one all the time but the kiddos broke the bowl. It was so much easier when we had busy days just to throw something in and go about our day. Hopefully we find one and we can go back to easy dinners.
