The path in the tropical glasshouse at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, has been temporarily closed to protect the flower buds of Strongylodon macrobotrys (jade vine, emerald vine, emerald creeper). This vigorous evergreen climber has unique blue-green coloured flowers on long pendent racemes reaching up to 90cm in length.

ENDANGERED JADE VINE SPOTTED IN THE MASUNGI GEOPARK PROJECT 🌿

Masungi park rangers spotted the Jade Vine at the peak of MGP, the same area that would have been leveled to the ground by quarries if not for citizens’ vigilance.

Endemic to the Philippines and locally known as Tayabak, the Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) crawls up tall trees in search of sunlight and can reach a height of 20 meters. It is also notable for the chandelier-like growth of its flowers.

While more common compared to the JC’s Vine, the Tayabak is regarded as a national treasure and is featured at the back of the five-peso coin. Sadly, it is also classified as Endangered due to habitat loss (DAO 2017-11).

The presence of the Jade Vine in the Masungi Geopark Project underscores the importance of safeguarding the watershed against destructive activities. #SaveMasungi

Jade creeper in turquoise green color

The Jade Liana is one of the most attractive tropical plants with its long, hanging clusters of green-turquoise flowers, a unique color in the plant world.

This plant is native to the forests of the Philippines where its pollination is done by bats that drink the nectar upside down while the pollen settles. It took until 1995 before we succeeded in imitating this process to obtain fruit. Since then, it has invaded tropical gardens, including those of Tahiti. It is now threatened in its natural environment by the exploitation of the tropical forest.

The jade vine is part of the Fabaceae family, just like our beans. Its botanical name Strongylodon means “round tooth” in Greek and macrobotrys means “large cluster”.

It is a climbing plant with thick, twisted, rope-like trunks that can reach 20 m in length. Its pinkish-bronze colored leaves when young then turn dark green and form an impenetrable screen against the sun's rays.

The inflorescences appear as pendulous clusters 1 m long set with flowers about 7 cm long in the form of claws curved upwards. But the main particularity lies in the turquoise green color of its flowers, hence the reference to jade, the semi-precious stone that gave it its name.

It is perfect for adorning pergolas and gazebos which gives superb cascades of turquoise flowers. To promote its flowering, the plant must imperatively receive direct sunlight on its foliage, while its roots, on the contrary, must be protected from the sun's rays. The plant prefers slightly acidic soil and plenty of water, as lack of water slows its growth.

LIPAY 🌿 Along the monitoring trails our rangers patrol hang clusters of the Mucuna pruriens or Lipay, a Philippine-native climbing legume that sports dark purple flowers.

Its seeds, according to studies, have medicinal properties & are used to treat Parkinson's disease (Lampariello et al., 2012). This flora species belongs to the family Fabacaea like the elusive JC’s Vine (Strongylodon juangonzalezii).

More than two years ago, portions of this area—and further up—were fenced off by a quarry company, threatening the unique biodiversity that inhabit it. 🚧 Today, the place is now protected by our rangers to prevent further encroachment.
