Why Custom Sublimation Apparel Is the Best Choice for Modern Teams and Brands
In a world where visual identity and performance matter more than ever, custom sublimation apparel is quickly becoming the go-to solution for teams, businesses, and event organizers. Offering bold designs, durable prints, and unmatched versatility, sublimated clothing stands apart from traditional printing methods.
Whether you're designing uniforms, promotional wear, or branded gear, this guide will show you why sublimation is your best option—and how to do it right.
What Is Custom Sublimation Apparel?
Custom sublimation apparel refers to garments printed using a dye-sublimation process. This method uses heat to transfer dye into the fibers of synthetic fabrics (typically polyester), resulting in a permanent, high-resolution print that doesn’t fade, crack, or peel.
Unlike screen printing or heat transfers that sit on top of the fabric, sublimation embeds the ink directly into the material. This creates a design that is:
Vibrant and sharp
Soft to the touch
Breathable and lightweight
Top Benefits of Custom Sublimation Apparel
1. Design Without Limits
Sublimation allows for all-over prints with no restrictions on colors, gradients, or detail. Whether you're printing intricate patterns or high-resolution photos, your design will look clean and professional.
2. Built to Last
Sublimated prints are part of the fabric itself. That means no cracking, peeling, or fading—even after countless washes and heavy use. Perfect for athletic teams, outdoor events, or active employees.
3. Comfort and Functionality
Sublimated clothing is typically made from performance fabrics that wick moisture and stretch easily. This makes them ideal for sports, fitness, and work environments where movement and comfort are key.
4. Fast Turnaround for Custom Orders
Many suppliers now offer fast production timelines and low minimum orders, making it easy to get high-quality, custom gear quickly—no matter your group size.
Ideal Uses for Custom Sublimation Apparel
Sports Teams: Baseball, soccer, basketball, or esports teams can get full uniforms with numbers, names, and logos.
Corporate Branding: Trade shows, retail uniforms, or giveaways become much more memorable with stylish branded apparel.
Schools and Clubs: Spirit wear, club shirts, and competition outfits can be made in bulk for a unified look.
Startups and Streetwear Brands: Unique, on-trend prints help your collection stand out online and in stores.
How to Create Stunning Custom Sublimation Apparel
Creating custom sublimation apparel can be straightforward if you follow these steps:
Pick the Right Garment Type Choose items designed for sublimation—commonly polyester t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, or jerseys.
Design in High Resolution Use a 300 DPI file or a vector format to avoid pixelation. Keep your design in CMYK color mode for better print accuracy.
Use a Template Provided by the Supplier This helps with proper alignment and print-safe zones. Ensure key design elements aren’t placed too close to seams.
Request a Sample or Mockup Before placing a full order, ask for a digital mockup or physical sample to confirm how the final product will look.
Choosing a Trusted Sublimation Partner
The quality of your final product often depends on the company you choose. When selecting a vendor, look for:
Experience with sublimation printing
In-house design assistance
Customer reviews and sample photos
Clear communication and order tracking
Some top-rated suppliers also offer online design tools, live chat support, and international shipping.
Things to Avoid with Sublimation Printing
Using Cotton Garments: Sublimation doesn’t work on natural fibers like cotton.
Overly Complicated Layouts: While the technique allows for creativity, too many competing design elements can look cluttered.
Ordering Without Proofing: Always check a final preview to ensure logos, colors, and text are placed correctly.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking to elevate your team, brand, or event, custom sublimation apparel offers a perfect blend of visual impact, durability, and comfort. With nearly unlimited design potential and long-lasting results, it’s the smart choice for those who want their apparel to perform as well as it looks.
Whether you're printing 10 or 1,000 pieces, investing in high-quality sublimation means your brand or message won’t just be seen—it’ll be remembered.

With so many options available, how do you determine which T-shirt printing is best for your needs? In this guide, we’ll explore the top printing methods, their pros and cons, and help you make an informed decision.
Popular T-Shirt Printing Methods
1. Screen Printing
Screen printing, also known as silk screen printing, is one of the most common and durable printing techniques.
Pros:
Ideal for bulk printing
Long-lasting and vibrant colors
Cost-effective for large orders
Cons:
High setup costs for small batches
Limited to simple designs and fewer colors
Many t shirt manufacturers in Chennai prefer screen printing for corporate orders, sports teams, and promotional events due to its cost efficiency.
2. Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing
DTG printing is a modern technique that uses inkjet technology to print designs directly onto fabric.
Pros:
High-quality prints with intricate details
Unlimited color options
No minimum order requirement
Cons:
Expensive for large orders
Colors may fade over time
For startups and individuals looking for personalized designs, t shirt manufacturers in Chennai often recommend DTG printing due to its flexibility.
3. Heat Transfer Printing
This method involves transferring a design from a special paper to fabric using heat and pressure.
Pros:
Affordable and easy to produce small batches
Allows detailed and colorful designs
Suitable for synthetic fabrics
Cons:
Not as durable as screen printing
Prone to cracking and peeling over time
Many t shirt manufacturers in Chennai offer heat transfer printing for custom one-off designs, events, and special occasions.

Sublimation printing is a process where heat converts dye into gas and embeds it into the fabric.
Pros:
Produces vibrant, all-over prints
Long-lasting and resistant to fading
Best for polyester fabrics
Cons:
Works only on light-colored polyester fabrics
Expensive setup costs
If you’re looking for high-quality printed sports jerseys, t shirt manufacturers in Chennai often recommend sublimation printing.

Vinyl printing involves cutting out designs from vinyl sheets and pressing them onto the fabric.
Pros:
Durable and long-lasting
Best for simple text and logos
Ideal for personalized sports jerseys
Cons:
Not suitable for detailed designs
Limited to a few colors per design
Many t shirt manufacturers in Chennai use vinyl printing for customized name and number prints on sportswear.
Choosing the Best Printing Method
The right T-shirt printing method depends on various factors, including:
Order Size: For large batches, screen printing is cost-effective, while DTG and heat transfer are better for small orders.
Design Complexity: If your design has intricate details and multiple colors, DTG or sublimation is ideal.
Fabric Type: Sublimation works best on polyester, while screen and DTG printing work well on cotton.
Budget: Heat transfer and vinyl are budget-friendly, whereas DTG and sublimation may cost more.
Durability Needs: Screen printing and sublimation are the most durable options.
Why Work with Professional T Shirt Manufacturers in Chennai?
Finding the right t shirt manufacturers in Chennai ensures that you get high-quality prints, durable fabrics, and expert guidance. Experienced manufacturers offer a range of printing methods tailored to your needs, whether it’s bulk corporate orders, promotional merchandise, or unique one-off designs.

Exploring Different Printing Techniques for Custom T-Shirts in Bangalore
Bangalore's custom T-shirt industry is thriving, offering a variety of printing techniques that cater to different needs and preferences. Whether you're designing for personal use, corporate events, or special occasions, understanding the available printing methods can help you choose the best option for your project. Let's explore the different printing techniques for custom T-shirts in Bangalore.
1. Screen Printing
Overview: Screen printing, also known as silkscreen printing, is one of the most popular and traditional methods for custom T-shirt printing. It involves creating a stencil (or screen) and using it to apply layers of ink on the T-shirt fabric.
Advantages:
Durability: Produces long-lasting designs that withstand multiple washes.
Vibrant Colors: Delivers bright and opaque colors, ideal for bold designs.
Cost-Effective: Economical for large orders.
Considerations:
Setup Time: Requires a significant setup time, making it less suitable for small batches.
Color Limitation: Best for designs with limited colors due to the layering process.
2. Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing
Overview: Direct-to-garment printing involves using a specialized inkjet printer to apply ink directly onto the fabric. This method allows for detailed and multi-colored designs without the need for screens.
Advantages:
High Detail: Capable of printing complex and intricate designs with a high level of detail.
No Color Limitation: Supports full-color prints, including gradients and photographs.
Quick Setup: Ideal for small orders and one-off designs due to minimal setup time.
Considerations:
Fabric Compatibility: Works best on 100% cotton fabrics.
Durability: Less durable than screen printing, especially on darker fabrics.
3. Heat Transfer Printing
Overview: Heat transfer printing involves transferring designs from a printed sheet onto the T-shirt using heat and pressure. There are different types of heat transfer methods, including vinyl heat transfer and digital heat transfer.
Advantages:
Versatility: Suitable for a variety of fabrics and design complexities.
Vibrant Colors: Produces vivid and sharp designs.
Customizability: Great for creating customized T-shirts with names, numbers, and small details.
Considerations:
Durability: May not be as durable as screen printing; designs can crack or fade over time.
Feel: Can create a heavier feel on the fabric, especially with larger designs.
4. Sublimation Printing
Overview: Sublimation printing is a process where dye is transferred onto the fabric using heat. The dye turns into gas and penetrates the fabric fibers, resulting in vibrant and permanent designs.
Advantages:
Durability: Designs are embedded in the fabric, making them highly durable and resistant to fading.
Full Color: Allows for full-color prints with high detail and vibrancy.
Soft Feel: The designs do not add any weight or texture to the fabric.
Considerations:
Fabric Limitation: Works best on polyester or polyester-coated fabrics.
Cost: Can be more expensive than other printing methods.
5. Embroidery
Overview: Embroidery involves stitching designs onto the fabric using thread. While not a printing method, it's a popular technique for custom T-shirts, especially for logos and text.
Advantages:
Professional Look: Offers a premium and professional appearance.
Durability: Highly durable and resistant to wear and tear.
Texture: Adds texture and dimension to the design.
Considerations:
Cost: Generally more expensive than printing methods.
Design Limitation: Best suited for simpler designs and smaller areas.

Atom is Pulsar
So, thanks to Tumblr, I decided to play around with HTML again. I went to web design classes for three whole ass years, but I never used the skill because 1) I hated it, and 2) sites like Wordpress made it feel useless.
Considering the scope of Tumblr and the relative "deadness" of the site in 2023 with no visible hope of growing this late into its lifespan, it's probably still a pretty useless skill. However, I like to customize and write a lot of shit, so it seemed like a fun idea to make some cool sites for my blogs :3
When looking for a text editor, my first option was Atom, which is what I used in my web classes. I found out that the program had actually sunsetted, and the package support was no more. Disappointed, I decided to use Sublime. Didn't really like it, but the most annoying part is that you have to register it for a hundred fuckin bucks, unlike the open-source Atom.
So, being the thieving fox I am, I turn to piracy. I look for cracks, patches, etc. While searching for through some Reddit posts for a solution, I saw someone mention Pulsar. After reading a bit, I realized Pulsar was just the official successor to Atom.
I downloaded it, and I swear to god it looks almost entirely identical to Atom and has the exact same package manager. Now I feel like I know what I'm doing.

Are You Trying to Seduce Me? | Kian Lawley
(so here’s part 2. it’s definitely a lot longer than i anticipated but it’s finally done. i merged it with a request someone sent cuz I'm innovative. also thanks for forgetting about this part 2 cuz it’s been a hottt minute since i started writing it but thanks to quarantine i had plenty of time to finish it) (and a big thanks to the anon that gave me this idea on why they broke up!)
PART 1
prompt request taken from this post
14: why’d you leave? (part 2) 20: are you trying to seduce me? (part 1)
You were woken up from the constant shifting happening next to you. Glancing at the time, you saw it was a little past 7am. You let out a sigh, mad that your feelings got the best of you. Trying not to make too much noise, you slipped out of bed and made your way out the door.
You didn’t know where you were going but when you started walking your feet led to the beach. Part of you regrets giving in to Kian but the other part of you missed him a lot more than you wanted to admit. Neither of you ever got the closure you deserved and every day without Kian, you regretted leaving the way you did.
You watched the sun rise as thoughts and memories flooded your head, not realizing how long you’ve been out there. When you got to the beach, it was nearly empty, just a couple joggers here and there but now it’s filled with people every way you look.
“Where have you been!” Franny yelled at you as you walked off the elevator to your floor, “We’ve been trying to call you dude,”
You shrug your shoulders, not seeing the big deal, “I was at the beach.”
Franny’s face contorted, clearly confused, “You were at the beach...in sweatpants?”
Brushing off her comment, you pull your key card and walk into your room only to have 4 pairs of eyes on you. “Uh, hello?” you said, cautiously stepping further into the room.
An abundance of questions and comments started filling the room.
“What the fuck (Y/n),” from Jc
“We thought you got kidnapped,” from Corey
“Next time bring your phone if you’re gonna run off,” from Bobby
Your eyes locked on Kian’s, waiting for him to say something about your actions but it became clear he didn’t want to talk when he got off the bed and locked himself in the bathroom.
“Seriously, (y/n), what the hell happened?” Corey asks as they make space for you on the bed.
You couldn’t understand why everyone was freaking out over your disappearance until you looked at the clock. 1:45pm.
You were out for almost 6 hours with no phone, no way to contact anyone if anything happened. When you left, you didn’t even think about bringing anything with you. You also hadn’t expected to be there for as long as you were.
“Listen, I’m sorry, okay? I went to the beach and I didn’t realize how long I was out for. I forgot to grab my phone before I left,” your fingers played with the drawstring on your pants. You knew if you said anything else they’d bombard you with more questions.
You could feel everyone looking at each other and then at you and then at the bathroom door. Everyone assumed you and Kian probably had an argument and you didn’t want to be near him, but little did they know it was the complete opposite.
“As long as everything’s good,” Franny said, giving you her ‘I know something’s up but I’ll pretend you’re fine’ look.
You let out a little laugh when Corey said from behind his phone screen, “We’re just glad you’re not dead. That would have put a damper on this trip,”
“Oh thanks Cor. Glad that all you care about is your vacation,” you joked, rolling your eyes at him.
“Well am I wrong?” He retorted causing you to throw a pillow hitting him square in the face.
Your friends started their own conversations, finally leaving you alone. Nobody seemed to notice that Kian was still in the bathroom. You knew you couldn’t avoid him forever, as much as you wanted to, but right now he’s the one avoiding you.
You texted him that you needed to talk but minutes passed and he didn't answer. You felt a pinch on your heart when you saw he read it.
Just as you were going to give up on him, Kian emerges from the bathroom, instantly locking eyes with you. The room went silent and once again all eyes were on you.
Neither you or Kian said a word, but it was clear that he wanted to talk when he tilted his head towards the door. In the background your friends fake coughing to ease the tension but when the hotel room door opens, they begin to whisper like little kids.
The two of you walk a couple rooms down the hall for privacy. You settle next to Kian on a bench you guys found by the elevators. Your fingers found their way to the drawstring once again, putting all your attention on anything but Kian.
“Why’d you leave?” Kian asked, his voice low and barely audible. You could hear the hurt in his voice as he spoke, “There were so many ways you could have gone, but just leaving? No note, no text. Nothing, (y/n).”
Your eyes roamed every inch of the room, not daring to make eye contact all while Kian never took his off of you. He studied your features, up and down, like he’s never seen you before. But he knows you. He knows you’re feeling guilty and scared. He knows you’re mad at yourself for letting him back in so easily. He spent 3 years with you, 3 years studying every facial feature, every look you make.
“I just..” You started to say, but as you opened your mouth every thought you had sublimated, “I don’t know why I left, okay? I just woke up and you were next to me and I don’t fucking know, Kian.”
The two of you stayed quiet, neither of you knowing what to say to the other.
“Do you regret last night?” Kian asks, finally taking his gaze off of you, knowing if he continued looking at you, he would get the answer he was dreading.
No.
Not one second.
Tell him! Tell him you don’t regret it
Just say it, (y/n).
Your head was spinning with words but nothing seemed to come out of your mouth. Kian got the hint, that your silence was your answer. He stood up, ready to walk away.
You couldn’t tell him he was wrong. That you never wanted last night to end. It was as if your lips were glued shut, keeping in a secret you swore you’d never tell.
“I don’t,” you finally blurted out before Kian could take another couple steps away from you, “Last night, I don’t regret it.”
You could see Kian’s lips pull into a small smile before you turned around to sit next to you again.
“Then why’d you leave? And go off the grid for half the day?” Kian leaned back, resting his around on the ledge behind you. It took everything in him not to grab your hands and comfort you like he used to.
“Honestly? I knew if I stayed we’d have to talk about what happened. And not last night. I wasn’t ready but then I started thinking, and it’s not fair to you.”
Kians head rocked back and forth, taking in your answer but not getting the information he wanted. “Glad you’re finally realizing that,” Kian said, not completely joking, “So can you finally tell me what the fuck happened that made you leave us the way you did?”
You took a deep breath, sewing together words into sentences, hoping whatever you were about to say came out correct, “I just got scared,”
So many words. So many sentences. But that’s all you could get out.
“Scared of what though?”
“You. And Andrea.”
“Me and And- (Y/n), what the hell? Because of our friendship?”
You nodded, “You guys were getting close again and I felt like it was just a matter of time before your feelings for her came back and we just stopped being us.”
Kian let out a small laugh, realizing how far off you were with your assumption. You shot a look at Kian, making him go serious, “Look, me and Andrea had history, yeah. But I was with you. I love you. You’re the only person I wanted to be with. Me and Andrea broke up for a reason.”
“But still. You were spending so much time with her. It was like you forgot about me and I just couldn’t do it anymore. So i left.”
The memory of that night played so clearly in your head. It did every night since the breakup.
“Franny, I can’t. Every time they’re together it’s like I disappear from his life and everything is about her.” You were holding back the tears as you confessed to Franny. You were going back and forth about leaving Kian. You wanted to stay and deal with this with him but you could only fight for so long.
“Did you walk to him about it? Does he even know how you feel?” Franny asks as she cradles your body, doing anything she can to keep you calm.
You couldn’t speak. You knew if you did a waterfall of tears would come and there’s no stopping until your eyes were empty of tears.
“I think you should keep fighting for him. But I get it. If you mentally and emotionally can’t deal with her being around anymore then maybe this is the end, (y/n).” Franny’s words kept replaying over and over.
This is the end.
3 years of your life gone just like that.
Everything you and Kian built together.
Every morning. Every night. Every kiss. Every touch.
Everything
Just like that, it’s all gone.
You picked yourself off the bed and headed straight for the closet. Grabbing your suitcase and bags, you stuffed all your belongings you had scattered around Kian’s room into them, praying you didn’t leave anything behind.
All the guys were out for the night, which gave you your chance to leave without anyone seeing.
“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Franny asked as she met you at the bedroom door, getting ready to follow you out.
“No, but I know this is what’s good for me.” You say before exiting the room.
You were staying at Franny’s for a couple weeks until you could find your own apartment. Not a day went by that Kian didn’t try reaching out to you. Whether it’s a call or text or showing up unannounced at Fran’s.
“Please let me talk to her, Fran. I haven’t heard from her in a week. I need to know she’s okay,” you could hear Kian say from his spot behind the front door. You could hear his voice crack, knowing he was seconds away from a breakdown.
“Kian, I know you love her, but she needs space. She’s fine I promise. We’re all looking after her. But you need to let her get her head straight.”
And he did. He stopped calling, and texting, and showing up unexpectedly.
He moved on.
But you never did.
“It wasn’t fair to me. Do you know how bad that fucked me up (y/n)? All I wanted to do was talk to you and I couldn’t even do that.” Kian played with his fingers, reliving that moment in time all over again.
The feelings from months ago came rushing back. All the sleepless night, the numerous reach outs, every night he went to bed without you got harder and harder.
“I know. And I wanted to call you but by the time everything settled down I didn’t think it was right to put you through it all again,” tears pricked your eyes as you just now realized Kian never moved on. For months all he thought about was you. Just like all you thought about was him.
“So now what?” Kian asked, breaking the silence that fell upon the two of you.
You hadn’t thought this far ahead when you were racking your brain on what could possibly happen. You wanted him in you life, whether as a friend or more. You missed his presence every day he was gone.
“I don’t really know. We can’t exactly pick up where we left off,” You glance as Kian to find him already looking at you.
You knew that wasn’t true. You could pick up where you left off, But a couple hours before that. You could fix everything together and nothing would change.
“I mean,” Kian said as he leaned forward, not once taking his eyes off of you, “We can. It wasn’t that hard for us last night,” You eyes fluttered to his lips. His tongue gliding over them as he inched closer to you, “Do you want to pick up where we left off?”
Your attention was brought back to his eyes. For once you didn’t think twice about your actions. You leaned forward, colliding your lips with his.
Everything happening around you stopped. The entire world was put on pause and the only thing happening was this moment with Kian.
“I’m assuming that’s a yes,” Kian muttered as he pulled away, his lips ghosting over yours.
“Of course it’s a yes,” you say before continuing your moment with him.

How to Choose the Best Custom T-Shirt Printing Service in Chennai
Tumblr media
Custom T-shirts have become a popular choice for individuals, businesses, and events in Chennai. Whether you need printed T-shirts for corporate branding, promotional campaigns, sports teams, or personal use, selecting the right custom t shirt printing in chennai is crucial. With so many options available, how do you make the best choice? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key factors to consider when choosing a custom t shirt printing in chennai service that meets your needs.
1. Define Your Requirements
Before you start searching for a custom t shirt printing in chennai service, outline your specific needs:
Purpose: Are the T-shirts for branding, gifting, events, or personal use?
Quantity: Do you need a bulk order or just a few pieces?
Material Preference: Cotton, polyester, blended fabrics—what suits your needs?
Design Complexity: Do you need simple text prints or intricate multi-color designs?
Having a clear understanding of your requirements will help you find the right custom t shirt printing in chennai provider.
2. Check Printing Methods Offered
The quality and durability of your custom T-shirt largely depend on the printing technique used. Common printing methods include:
Screen Printing – Best for bulk orders, long-lasting, and vibrant.
DTG (Direct to Garment) – Great for detailed designs with multiple colors.
Heat Transfer Printing – Suitable for small orders with complex designs.
Sublimation Printing – Ideal for polyester fabrics, ensures high-quality prints.
Ensure that the custom t shirt printing in chennai service offers the method that best suits your design and fabric choice.
3. Evaluate Print Quality
Quality should never be compromised. Look for:
Sharp, clear, and vibrant prints.
No fading or cracking after multiple washes.
Soft prints that blend well with the fabric.
A reliable custom t shirt printing in chennai provider should offer sample prints before finalizing the order.
4. Compare Pricing and Packages
Pricing can vary significantly depending on:
Fabric quality
Printing technique
Order quantity
Request quotes from multiple custom t shirt printing in chennai services and compare their pricing and packages. Look for any hidden costs and check if bulk orders come with discounts.
5. Check Turnaround Time
If you have a deadline, choose a service that offers quick delivery without compromising on quality. Ask about their standard processing time and whether they offer express delivery options.
6. Read Customer Reviews and Testimonials
Online reviews can provide valuable insights into a company’s reliability and service quality. Look for:
Customer feedback on Google, Facebook, and other platforms.
Testimonials on their website.
Ratings and recommendations from past clients.
A highly-rated custom t shirt printing in chennai service is more likely to meet your expectations.
7. Look for Design Assistance
Not all T-shirt printing services offer design support. If you need help refining your artwork, choose a provider with an in-house design team. This can ensure a professional and polished final product.
8. Verify Fabric and Size Options
A good custom t shirt printing in chennai company should offer:
A variety of fabric choices (cotton, polyester, blends, dri-fit, etc.).
Multiple size options for different demographics.
Checking fabric samples before ordering in bulk can help ensure comfort and durability.
9. Assess Customer Service
Good customer service is essential for a smooth experience. Choose a company that:
Responds quickly to inquiries.
Offers clear communication on order progress.
Provides post-sales support in case of issues.
A responsive custom t shirt printing in chennai provider will make the entire process hassle-free.
10. Ask About Sustainability Options
If eco-friendliness is important to you, ask about:
Organic or recycled fabric options.
Water-based or non-toxic printing methods.
Several custom t shirt printing in chennai services now offer sustainable printing solutions.
Final Thoughts
Finding the best custom t shirt printing in chennai doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By considering factors like print quality, pricing, turnaround time, customer reviews, and fabric options, you can make an informed decision. Looking Closer at How The Abominable Bride Foreshadowed and Can Be Used to Chronologically Decode Series 4:
In TAB, shortly before Sherlock and John are introduced to what will lead to the main case of the episode, Sherlock deduces that the mysterious woman waiting in his loft (Mary) has recently married a seemingly kind man who’s abandoned her for an “unsavory companion of dubious morals,” referring to himself. Throughout the episode taking place in Sherlock’s dream, John and Mary are disconnected from each other, before ultimately making up at the end, as Sherlock’s dream gradually descends into his worst nightmare and he’s increasingly separated from John when faced against Moriarty.
In TST, shortly before John and Sherlock are introduced to what will lead to the main case of the episode, John is shown talking to Sherlock about coming over to his loft at a certain time, making eye contact with a flirtatious woman on the bus. Throughout the episode, or John’s story, John and Mary are more often than not physically inseparable from each other –– but when a rift does grow in the second half, they both try to make up at the end, before Mary’s seemingly accidental death and John telling her about the emotional cheating, as John’s story gradually descends into his worst nightmare and he’s separated from Sherlock while being haunted by Mary.

In TAB, Sherlock is trying to reckon with his past failures while anticipating future problems. This is most central in terms of Sherlock fearing Moriarty’s return, but he’s also trying to imagine the nature and pitfalls of the relationship between John and Mary. Sherlock imagines himself as the “unsavory companion with dubious morals” dragging John away from Mary and makes several jabs at himself, including the no-homo joke, “I was talking to Mary”, when Sherlock was trying to, rarely, in a world where he can imagine it happening any other way, tell him how he feels with his own words about them growing apart. Throughout TAB, though John and Sherlock share a lot of scenes and screentime together, Sherlock imagines them being emotionally, entire worlds apart from one another.
Sherlock berates John for his stories, similar to how he’s berated John for his blog, being blind to Sherlock expressing his feelings about him in every way but through the right words. This is reflective of where they were at the end of HLV –– Sherlock tried to manipulate John into taking Mary back for his own safety, making Mary look as good as possible, lying about what happened in Magnussen’s office, and even going so far as to shoot Charles Magnussen for John’s protection (“John Watson is definitely in danger. That wife.”), but still doesn’t understand what’s going on inside John’s head because they aren’t communicating. John, conversely, suspects Sherlock and Mary of caring for each other, and Sherlock of shooting Magnussen because he thinks he’s in love with her, because they’re both sociopaths, just like Irene, because John still thinks Mary is also a sociopath because he hasn’t actually forgiven her. Sherlock closes the distance between them in his mind by the end of TAB, understanding he has to start letting John in in order to stop Moriarty (and Mary, though he may not be consciously aware she’s working with him) so they can finally be together.
And Sherlock does do this –– but John is still lost. He’s working with Sherlock, but still doesn’t how Sherlock really feels about him. We know that John still feels shut out from working with Sherlock because of several things that John writes in series 4 –– the jealousy of his relationship with Mary, the jealousy with Irene, the deep, unabiding suspicion that Sherock really is a monster and that John has pined for him for half a decade for nothing –– meaning that Sherlock still hasn’t let John in on the biggest secret. One of the most obvious ways we can tell both of these things is through John’s invention of the cheating storyline in TST that emotionally resolves in TLD.
There are several things going on in TST involving John’s character, but all of them resolve around the most important event of the episode; the cover up of Mary’s death or disappearance. Everything that John writes himself doing in this episode is done to make him appear innocent; he took his “perfect” wife for granted, he was an disloyal pervert going through a midlife crisis, and that he genuinely, ultimately wanted to confess and make up for his mistakes by the end of the episode, but was stopped by Mary’s untimely death he was conveniently not present for... but stems from a deeper place of emotional honesty. As the author of series 4, John has to give both himself and Sherlock certain flaws to face and overcome by the end of TLD (before TFP –– which is so deliberately disconnected from the first two episodes), and also as the author, John can’t help but slip up and let things slip out, revealing both the true events of series 4 and his own desires, biases, feelings, and motivations.
The truth is that the cheating storyline is a substitute for something that was already happening –– John emotionally cheating with Sherlock. John was only with Mary because he wanted to move on from Sherlock and have an ordinary life where he could repress all of his feelings and carry them to the grave. When Sherlock shows back up, less then 24 hours after John is furious with him, he’s forgiven him and shows up outside his flat, ready to head up upstairs. “Oscillation on the pavement always means there’s a love affair,” remarks Sherlock in TSOT about a woman doing the same thing he did in the episode before. Also in TSOT, John made a move on Sherlock by groping his knee, “I don’t mind,” trying to weigh Sherlock’s interest in him before feeling discouraged and the two of them being sidetracked by a client. In HLV, John has his clothes packed in a suitcase one month into his new marriage, bikes to work to get away from his wife, and storms a crack den to get his kicks –– when he finds Sherlock, as soon as they get back to his flat and Sherlock goes to take a shower, John starts marching down the hallway to his bedroom for absolutely no other reason then he was literally planning on fucking him in the ass. He was literally just going to barge into his bathroom and furiously make out with him (after both of them internally realizing at the end of TSOT that they’re in love with each other). This is a consistent theme with every episode of series 3 –– in every step of John’s relationship with Mary, dating and proposal, engaged, literally married –– John wanted to cheat on Mary and be with Sherlock.
John’s cheating storyline in TST is a direct correlation to John’s feelings about Sherlock in series 3. John has to invent a cheating storyline with a random woman in order to absolve himself of Mary’s murder, but he can’t help but let his own internal biases slip out, revealing a deeper and more devastating emotional honesty despite the ridiculousness of the surface level text. John on the bus in TST is a callback to John on the subway in TEH –– except this time, rather than being dead inside over Sherlock’s death two years later, John is speaking with Sherlock over text. Sherlock texts John about meeting for a case with Lestrade later, which John ignores at first, something he never does, before Sherlock texting him reassurance, “Mary said it’s fine.” Seconds later, John is introduced to “E”, later revealed as Eurus. Eurus is wearing red and has red hair, which we later learn in the episode is a sign that Eurus is John’s “substitute”. While most characters in series 4 wear blue to indicate they are all John as the author, Eurus is noted as actually being a substitute for John herself (similar to TLD, where she is credited as the “Lady in Red” with a red dress). And as we also learned in TFP, in comparison to the glass breaking in TAB, Eurus has removed the glass –– as John’s dark mirror, “transparent”, she is a look into John’s own subconscious. Eurus is a plot device invented by John and hastily inserted last minute into both TST and TLD, finally given purpose in TFP, where John’s story begins to spin out of control. Eurus’s function here for John as the author is him pulling from his own experiences. John is imagining a scenario based on those two years where Sherlock suddenly shows back up in his life and he almost immediately cheats on Mary with him. John on the bus a very short-term correlation to John’s emotional cheating in series 3. In this episode however, broadly speaking, Eurus’s function in the narrative is also to give John and Sherlock cover.
John and Sherlock barely spend any time alone together in TST because John has to cover up what the two of them are actually doing. In TAB, Mary has to disguise herself as a client in order to get John’s attention and not be left behind. In TST, Mary has to surprise them on a case in order to not be left behind. In TAB, this is because Sherlock feels insecure and denounces himself for being a negative influence on John, while also recalling that Mary actually did become a client because of her dark past, and still will be until it finally catches up to her, like it did to Sir Eustace (and John, after). In TST, John is idealizing Mary and the relationship between the three, while also letting his insecurities and jealousy slip out.
Mary is a suffocating presence in TST, but not for the reasons we’re shown. In TAB, Sherlock imagines Mary feeling left behind and him and John go off on their adventures together. In TST, Mary is part of the adventure the whole way through –– Mary is the adventure that John and Sherlock ultimately go on (but again, not for the reasons we’re shown). Mary gives birth in a cap, she’s always over at Sherlock’s loft with the baby, she’s face-timing John while him and Sherlock are on a case, she surprises them on a case as they run around London with a dog and the baby in tow, she runs away across the globe as John and Sherlock have to hunt her down leading to a shoot out, they fly back to London together, and Mary is ultimately the centerpiece of the set piece at the aquarium. John and Sherlock can’t share a moment alone together with Mary or someone else in the room. They can’t speak while apart without supervision. “Mary said it’s fine.” When Mary is finally, seemingly gone, Sherlock is even shut out from John at the end, as he’s given a letter that we weren’t shown the contents, forced to speak through Molly, another John mirror.
Happening after TAB, to a general audience, chronologically, this may appear as a natural progression of developing relationships between Sherlock, John and Mary. She wanted to be part of the investigation in TAB, and she finally really achieves that in TST, but that’s just another narrative trick that only barely tracks on the surface of series 4. John and Sherlock appear to be working together in this episode, but the truth is that they’re working together on something much different, despite being emotionally words apart –– taking down Mary.
Near the end of TST, Mary receives a text from Sherlock, “The curtain rises. The last act. It’s not over. SH”, in contrast to his text to John, which is asking him for help at the aquarium immediately. In comparison to TAB and events in series 2 and 3, this was a sign that John and Sherlock worked together to take down Mary at the end of the episode, and that whatever happened to Mary was staged –– but John and Sherlock are actually communicating throughout the entirety of TST, through Eurus as a proxy in John’s story. We learn in the last third of TST that John has actually been texting with “E” this entire time –– after showing Eurus as a mirror image of John on the plane, cutting back to four instances of John and “E” communicating: the first time on the bus where Eurus hands him a note, John texting “E” the first time later, texting in the middle of the night, and again on the bus. We’re shown John getting off the bus when they first meet two times, and the shots are totally different from each other. All the characters and extras are there, but it’s a completely new a different shot –– again, we aren’t being shown the truth of what’s really going on. The footage is being doctored.
“E” also describes themselves over text as a “Vampire”, despite Eurus having no coding as a vampire. Sherlock is the one who actually fits the coding of a vampire –– both due to the queer-coded nature of being so, just like, literally what he looks like to be quite honest, and due to meta and intertextual references to him being Batman in series 2 and 4 (the most obvious being him leaping down from the fog like a vampire bat in TFP). John is hiding his phone from Mary in this scene as well. In the last scene, John gets off the bus about to break things off with “E” before they see each other again and smile. According to John at the end of TLD, they just texted, but he’s obviously lying, and not just in the scene, but in his own story. The contradictions over “E” and the cheating storyline continue to build. “E” was never really Eurus –– whoever “E” really was on the bus, that person –– a friend of John and Sherlock’s, or part of Sherlock’s homeless network –– is allowing John and Sherlock to converse covertly without Mary supervising them, and without them having to enact a performance for a murder investigation. “E” was never really Eurus –– but when John was shot at the end of TLD, John had to tie together the events of TFP with the previous two episodes –– so he chooses the two most convenient people who can act as a hasty insert, or as John’s “substitute”, and simples writes them to be Eurus.
In TAB, John and Mary’s housemaid remarks that John and Mary are hardly home at the same time anymore and barely see each other. While John and Mary are physically often together in TST, similar with Sherlock, they are emotionally worlds apart. John is presenting us with a happy Watson family that never existed, John is playing the role –– and has been playing the role –– that Sherlock assigned to him in HLV, to take Mary back in order to discover long-term what her agenda truly is, and John is creating a moral lesson about his own life that he’s pulling from his own experiences to create. In TST, Sherlock is looking for Moriarty’s trail only to find something having to do with Mary at every turn. Mary is working with Moriarty, and John and Sherlock know it.
John and Sherlock are also secretly communicating with each other and are using texts do it –– and similar to Sherlock’s ominous text to Mary and specific request for help to John, in a murder investigation, these texts could easily be overlooked and excused in the story John has provided. In the same episode where John texts “E” just “Hey”, Sherlock conveniently notes for apparently no reason that he deletes any text that begins with “Hi”.
By the end of TAB, John and Mary make up and try to fix their relationship. But John’s story is a dark mirror and a denial of the optimistic future that Sherlock’s dream shows us. Almost every step of the way, John refuses to share Sherlock’s vision and digs himself deeper and deeper into a self-isolated corner. John and Mary never make up (and as the church is correlated with the showdown at the aquarium, Mary survives in TAB), and the truth stays buried –– but since Mary is the abominable bride, and the figure of Death in the Samarra story, she doesn’t stay buried for long.
At the end of TST, Sherlock receives the note from John through Molly. Unlike the previous texts and messages that John and Sherlock were using to covertly arrange plans with each other about Mary, we don’t see what it says, because there’s no cover to hide it under the guise of, and we as the audience aren’t supposed to be seeing the truth. But John is being haunted by the ghost of Mary, and sometimes as the author, loose ends –– and deeper emotional truths –– slip out.

Reverse Engineering and Cracking Workshop
On Thursday 13/06/20 I attended a Cracking and Reverse Engineering talk / workshop.
The first 30-45 minutes of the event was a talk by Jazz and Adam about operating systems, CPUs, general low-level computing fundamentals, knowledge of which would make reverse engineering and cracking easier to understand. I found this a good refresher of 1521 material. The talk concluded with a live demo of cracking Sublime Text. I was shocked by how little work it took.
I never knew tools that take binary and reverse engineer it to retrieve relatively understandable assembly and C, were so readily available. A few simple patches to the assembly altering jumping conditions allowed us to bi-pass the whole section of logic which checks if we’ve payed for the product and asks us to purchase it. Tremendous.
Then it was our turn to get our hands dirty, because you can’t really learn how to hack, or do anything in computing in general, if you don’t get in there and do things for yourself. Thankfully Jazz prepared a whole bunch of questions which was pretty sick. I got through the first 2-3 exercises using Binary Ninja. I found it to be a pretty handy tool, considering it only costs $140 (I used the free version lol). I found the control flow maps extremely useful especially in using them to visualize patches and the subsequent change in flow. I almost always find it helpful using a graphical que or even just thinking visually about abstract mathematical / computing problems. It’s why I like algebra so much, because nearly every concept we study analytically has a strong visual / geometric equivalent. Sometimes idea’s are just inherently more suited to be understood visually rather than analytically. In this case a well designed mix of the two proved very useful (product review xoxo).
I plan to get through the rest of the exercises over the weekend. It will be helpful to: 1. Get more practice in reverse engineering and cracking 2. Get to see if I enjoy reverse engineering and cracking enough to explore it for my ‘Something Awesome’ project.
