a week later...
The Liverpool game had been nice, actually. Jobe's family made her feel welcome despite the tension between her and Jobe. But afterward, asking for space had felt necessary. Everything was moving too fast, feelings getting too real.
Her teaching placement kept her busy enough – year four was a handful, and her review was coming up next week. Miss Thompson, her mentor teacher, seemed pleased with her progress, but the anxiety still lingered.
Keyon had become a constant presence, always ready with coffee and conversation between classes. She knew it wasn't fair to him – she wasn't interested, not really. But his attention was simple, uncomplicated. No family dinners, no matches, no growing feelings she wasn't ready to face.
The Instagram notification caught her eye during lunch break. A football gossip page had posted photos from Sunderland's latest match. Jobe, talking to some girl by the tunnel. The comments section was alive with speculation:
omg she's pretty get it jobe anyone know who she is?? who's this??? 👀
Justine's jaw clenched. She had no right to be jealous – she'd asked for space, after all. If he wanted to talk to other girls…but the thought made her stomach turn. The image of Jobe with someone else, making them laugh, looking at them the way he looked at her.
Stop it, she warned herself, closing the app. She had goals, plans. Graduate, secure a teaching position, build her career. A relationship with a footballer didn't fit into that neat timeline.
Later that night, curled in bed watching Love Island USA, her resolve felt weaker. The contestants talked about taking risks for love, about not letting fear hold them back. Her phone sat silent beside her – no texts from Jobe, no late-night calls.
She missed him. Missed his laugh, his touch, the way he'd kiss her forehead when she was stressed about teaching. Missed how he'd listen to her practice lessons, playing the role of an unruly student to help her prepare.
Maybe they could make it work. Plenty of WAGs managed careers alongside their relationships. But the thought of cameras, speculation, gossip pages analyzing her every move.
Her thoughts drifted to Liverpool, how natural it had felt with his family despite her anxiety. How Jobe had kept checking on her, making sure she was comfortable. How his mum had hugged her goodbye like she was already part of the family.
The Love Island episode ended, another couple declaring their love. Justine stared at her ceiling, wondering when playing it safe had become scarier than taking a risk.
Her phone buzzed – Keyon asking about tomorrow's study group. She left it unanswered. He wasn't who she wanted, and pretending otherwise only made everything more complicated. Goals were important. Career plans mattered. But maybe, just maybe, some things were worth adjusting those plans for.
The football gossip page's photos flashed in her mind again. Jobe, smiling at some unknown girl. Her hand tightened on her phone.
She was being stupid. Letting fear of what might happen stop something good from happening at all. Jobe had been patient, understanding, willing to take things at her pace. And how had she repaid him? By running at the first sign of real feelings.
The Love Island theme song played again – another episode starting automatically. On screen, one of the girls cried about letting fear ruin her chance at love.
Real subtle, universe, Justine thought.
Her teaching review was coming up fast. Maybe after that, when the stress had settled… maybe then she could think clearly about what she really wanted, yet the image of Jobe with another girl kept nagging at her. The possibility of losing him to someone who wasn't afraid, someone who could give him what she was too scared to…
Love Island droned on in the background, but Justine wasn't watching anymore. Her mind was full of Jobe – his smile, his laugh, how safe she felt in his arms. How he'd light up when she'd come to his matches, how proud he was when she talked about teaching.
Maybe being a WAG wouldn't be so bad, if it meant being with him.
The thought surprised her. A week ago, she'd run from the very idea. Now…
Her phone buzzed again. Another Instagram notification – more photos from the match. This time, she didn't open them. She didn't need to torture herself with possibilities.
Instead, she opened her calendar, looking at next week's schedule. Teaching review on Wednesday. Maybe Thursday she could drive up to Sunderland. Talk to him properly.
If he still wanted to talk to her.
The thought made her stomach clench. What if she'd pushed too hard? Asked for too much space? What if those photos weren't just innocent conversation?
Focus, she told herself. Review first. Everything else after.
But as she drifted off to sleep, Love Island still playing quietly, her last thought was of Jobe. Of his patient smile, his gentle hands, the way he made her feel both safe and thrilled at the same time.
Maybe some risks were worth taking.
Even if they scared her to death.
_______________________________________________
The week crawled by without a single call or text from Jobe. Justine threw herself into preparation for her teaching review, deliberately avoiding the places she knew she'd find Keyon. It wasn't fair to him, using his attention as a distraction. She needed to be alone, to really think about what – who – she wanted.
Miss Thompson observed her final lesson on Wednesday morning. Justine had prepared extensively, her year four class engaged and responsive as she led them through a creative writing exercise. Her hands only shook slightly as she collected their work, hyper-aware of her mentor's presence at the back of the room.
"Excellent work, Justine," Miss Thompson said afterward, reviewing her notes. "Your classroom management has improved significantly. The children respond well to your teaching style."
The satisfactory mark felt like a weight lifting. One hurdle cleared, one goal achieved. But instead of pure satisfaction, Justine felt something else – an urgent need to share this moment with someone specific.
She didn't even go home first. Threw a bag together at her flat and hit the road to Sunderland, probably breaking several speed limits. Her heart raced the entire drive, rehearsing what she'd say, how she'd explain her change of heart.
The sight of Jobe's building sent butterflies through her stomach. But as she approached, she spotted him – talking and laughing with some woman walking a small dog. The hug they shared made Justine's blood boil. Here she was, ready to bare her soul, and he was out here entertaining other women?
"Jobe!" His name came out sharp, angry.
He turned, squinting in confusion. "Justine?"
"I'll catch you later," the woman said, and Justine gave her a thorough once-over, noting her perfectly styled hair and fitted workout gear.
"Justine, what the hell are you doing here?"
"I'm here to talk to you, but clearly you're busy hugging random girls."
Jobe's chuckle made her even angrier.
"You think this is funny?" The patois slipped out with her anger.
"Course I do," he scoffed. "You wanted space, remember? And now you show up at my flat without notice, cussing me out?"
"You was hugging some girl!" The words exploded from her.
Jobe straightened, stepping closer. His voice dropped dangerously low. "Watch your tone, Justine. I let you holler at me too much and I'm trying to be nice, but enough, okay? Now what's up?"
The authority in his voice made heat pool between her thighs.
"You, that's what's up, Jobe," she managed, trying to keep her voice steady. "Like you out here entertaining girls while I'm—"
"You're what, jealous?" He rolled his eyes. "Justine, please, you sound wild right now. She's my neighbor. Her and her girlfriend left for a few days and needed someone to watch Pookie. That was a thank you hug."
The tension in Justine's shoulders eased slightly. "Oh."
"Yeah, oh." His smirk was infuriating. "Now why are you really here?"
"I..." She swallowed hard. "I missed you."
His grin widened. "Did you now?"
"Don't be cocky."
But then he was kissing her, and everything else fell away. When they broke apart, his eyes held a dangerous glint.
"You know you gonna have to pay for cussing me out like that, right? And all the yelling you did weeks ago."
The suggestive way he raised his eyebrows made her whole body tingle with anticipation. She nodded, understanding completely.
His hand landed playfully on her ass as they entered the building. In the elevator, he pulled her close again.
"How was your review?"
"Satisfactory mark."
His proud smile made her heart flip. "That's my girl," he murmured, before capturing her lips.
Inside his flat, though, the conversation turned serious. Justine perched on the edge of his couch, fidgeting with her sleeve.
"I had a plan, you know?" she said softly. "Finish uni, get a teaching job sorted, then maybe think about relationships."
"Yeah?" Jobe sat beside her, close but not touching. "My plan was just football. Endorsements. The whole career thing."
"Exactly. So maybe we should..."
"Or," Jobe interrupted, "maybe we could make this work?"
Justine looked at him skeptically. "And if it doesn't?"
"Don't be such a pessimist," he nudged her gently. "Come on, let's be real here - we've caught feelings. Proper ones."
She couldn't deny that. The way her heart raced around him, how his smile made her day better, how naturally they fit together.
"Fine," she said finally. "But no labels yet, okay?"
"You trying to do a runner on me?" he teased, but his eyes were serious.
"Just... agree. Please?"
"Alright," he conceded, moving closer. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her against his chest. "No labels."
When he kissed her, Justine felt herself melting into him, all her worries temporarily forgotten. They'd figure it out. Somehow, they'd make it work.
Jobe pulled back slightly, resting his forehead against hers. "We good?"
"Yeah," she smiled. "We're good."
"You know," Jobe grinned, playing with her fingers, "it was pretty hot when you got jealous over Rachel."
Justine groaned, burying her face in his chest. "Can we not?"
"What? My neighbor gives me a hug and you practically combusted."
"I did not—"
"Are you a clingy type of girlfriend?" His eyes sparkled with amusement. "Because that's not a red flag to me, at least if you're not too crazy. I like that you want me all to yourself. I'm the same way."
"Oh?" Justine raised an eyebrow. "So what does that mean?"
Jobe pursed his lips, his expression turning serious. "Is Keyon going to be a problem?"
"What? Are we still on this?" Justine pulled back slightly.
Jobe put his hands up in defense. "I'm just saying, J, the way he looked at you during that Halloween party..."
"He knows that I'm not interested in him."
"Since the fuck when?" Jobe's eyes widened.
"Since he asked me out one day and I shut him down."
"What? And he was just cool about it?"
"Yeah," Justine shrugged. Jobe made a face that made her pause. "What's that face for?"
"I don't know Justine," he said, his arm tightening around her waist. "You didn't see the way he was looking at you. Be careful, babes."
His protectiveness made her heart flutter, even as she rolled her eyes. "You're ridiculous, you know that?"
But Jobe's expression remained serious, his thumb tracing circles on her hip. "About you? Always."
Having a girlfriend was still new territory. A few months ago, he was focused solely on football, endorsements, his career. Now he found himself planning date nights, making time for FaceTime calls, being someone's person. Being Justine's person. It was different, but good different.
During warmups for the Stoke City match, his eyes kept drifting to the family section. Justine looked gorgeous as always, wrapped up in one of his old Birmingham hoodies, chatting with Tom's girlfriend. He waved, she waved back, and he tried not to think about the cameras that might have caught that moment.
Fuck it - let them see.
The match started intense. Stoke got a goal in the 35th minute, silencing the home crowd. When Jobe had a clear shot at equalizing, Number 8 - Harrison - knocked him down hard. No whistle.
"What the fuck, ref?" Jobe shouted, pushing himself up, grass stains on his kit.
"Pussy," Harrison muttered as he jogged past.
Jobe whipped around. "What the fuck did you say?"
They were suddenly face to face, tension crackling between them.
"There appears to be a scuffle developing between Jobe and Harrison," the commentators noted. "Both players being separated by teammates now."
His teammates tried pulling him back, but Harrison wasn't done. "Your girl don't want you! Such a pussy! I'll show her what it's like to be with a real man."
Jobe saw red, lunging forward, but his teammates held firm. "Jobe, man… chill. Don't let him get in your head."
He forced himself to breathe, grabbing his water bottle. The rage crystallized into focus. His brother's voice echoed in his head - use that anger, channel it into the game. This prick wanted to talk about Justine? Fine. He'd show him what a Bellingham could do.
When the ball came to him just before halftime, everything slowed down. One touch past Harrison, another to create space, then - GOAL. The stadium erupted.
As his teammates mobbed him, Jobe couldn't help but glance at Harrison, then up at Justine in the stands. The message was clear: don't ever talk about his girl again.
In the tunnel at halftime, his phone buzzed with a text from Jude: "Saw that goal. Proper Bellingham response 👊🏾"
When they emerged from the tunnel for the second half, the Stadium of Light was electric. The floodlights pierced through the early evening darkness, illuminating the pitch in that magical way that made every blade of grass shine. This was his home ground, and he had something to prove.
Harrison was still running his mouth, but Jobe channeled that anger into his game. Every touch was purposeful, every run calculated. He could still feel the rage simmering under his skin each time Harrison came near - the urge to throw hands was strong, but the desire to humiliate him on the pitch was stronger.
In the 67th minute, Sunderland won a corner. As they jostled for position in the box, Harrison tried to get under his skin again.
"Your girl's fit though, I'll give you that."
Jobe's jaw clenched, but he kept his focus. When the ball came in, he rose above Harrison - above everyone - and headed it into the back of the net. 2-1.
The Stadium of Light erupted. As his teammates surrounded him, Jobe couldn't resist turning to Harrison. "Who's the pussy now?"
The remaining minutes were intense, Stoke pushing for an equalizer, but Sunderland - and Jobe - held firm. When the final whistle blew, the roar from the crowd was deafening.
As the teams lined up for the customary handshakes, Harrison avoided his eyes. Jobe smirked. Sometimes the best response wasn't throwing hands - it was proving yourself on the pitch.
After hitting the showers, Jobe made his way to the family area. His heart rate picked up again when he spotted Justine, looking beautiful in his hoodie and jeans. The anger from earlier had transformed into something else entirely.
He pulled her into a passionate kiss, not caring who saw. Justine made a small sound of surprise but melted into it immediately. His hand slipped lower, giving her a playful squeeze that made her gasp against his lips.
"Let's head back," he whispered in her ear, his voice low and rough. Justine's breath hitched, understanding his meaning immediately.
The drive back to his flat was charged with tension. Every red light felt like torture. Jobe's hand rested on Justine's thigh the whole way home, his thumb tracing small circles that made her shiver. The match, Harrison's words, the victory - it all fueled the fire burning under his skin.
As soon as they crossed his flat's threshold, Jobe swept Justine off her feet, heading straight for the bedroom. Her giggles echoed through the hallway, a sound that made his heart race even faster. This was better than any victory on the pitch.
Later, tangled in sheets, Justine traced patterns on Jobe's chest while he told her about Harrison's comments during the match.
"Wait, that's why you looked ready to throw hands?" Justine propped herself up on an elbow, looking at him in surprise. "Over some stupid comments?"
"Course," Jobe's arm tightened around her waist. "If it involves you, of course I'm going to want to fight."
"My little hothead," she teased, but her heart fluttered at his protectiveness.
"Not little," he protested with a grin. "And anyway, I handled it the proper way - embarrassed him on the pitch instead."
"Mm, and then brought all that energy home to me," Justine smirked.
"Can you blame me?" Jobe pulled her closer. "Seeing you in my hoodie, knowing you were watching… plus I had to prove Harrison wrong about being a pussy."
"Trust me," Justine laughed softly, "you definitely proved him wrong."
"Damn right I did," he murmured, pressing a kiss to her shoulder. "Nobody talks about my girl like that."
"Your girl, huh?"
"Yeah," Jobe's voice softened. "My girl."
They were deep in a heated kiss when Justine's phone buzzed on the nightstand. Jobe groaned against her lips as she pulled away to check it.
"It's Keyon," she said.
"Don't answer," Jobe murmured, trying to pull her back.
"We're working on an assignment together, I have to check it."
"So late though?" Jobe's voice had an edge to it. "Sounds fishy as fuck."
Justine rolled her eyes but answered the phone anyway. "Hey, what's up?"
Jobe listened intently, his jaw clenching slightly as Keyon's voice came through the speaker. Usually, he wasn't the jealous type - Justine had plenty of male friends and it never bothered him. But something about Keyon set him off.
He watched as Justine discussed their project timeline, noticed how Keyon's laugh carried through the phone. Nah, this wasn't sitting right with him at all. Justine could be friends with whoever she wanted - guy or girl - but Keyon? That man needed to go. ASAP.
When Justine finally hung up, Jobe was still tense. "All good?" he asked, trying to keep his voice neutral.
"Just assignment stuff," she assured him, curling back into his side.
But Jobe couldn't shake the feeling that Keyon had other intentions. The way he looked at Justine at parties, these late-night calls… man needed to understand that Justine was taken.
______________________________________________
a few days later...
Jobe sprawled on his couch, controller in hand, grinning at the pictures Justine kept sending from Leeds. She was clearly drunk, living her best life at her friend's birthday party. The twerking video made him laugh - his girl was definitely feeling herself tonight.
"Are you even listening, man?" Jude's annoyed voice came through his headset.
"Honestly? Nah."
Jude sucked his teeth. "You're just as useless as this draw tonight."
"Maybe if you weren't so pressed about Lila hanging out with Lewis..."
"Shut up and ready up," Jude grumbled.
As they waited in the Fortnite lobby, Jobe decided to bring up what had been bothering him. "How would you handle this Keyon situation?"
"I'll knock him out. Next question."
Jobe chuckled. Typical Jude - his brother was an even bigger hothead than him, especially concerning Lila. "I can't just fight people all the time."
"Why not?"
"I'm thinking maybe I should talk to him. Man to man, you know?"
"If you're doing that, take the mandem with you."
"Nah, you know I can't. Toby's been itching for a fight since last summer."
Jude laughed. "Man almost caught a case in Mykonos. Good times."
"But for real though," Jobe continued as they played, "this Keyon guy's getting on my nerves. Like, he's always messaging J about their assignment, but it's weird hours. And the way he looks at her…"
"What, like how you used to look at her before you grew some balls and asked her out?"
"Fuck off," Jobe laughed. "But yeah, actually. And get this - when she told him she wasn't interested, he just accepted it? No man just accepts that shit that easily."
"Unless he's playing the long game," Jude said. "Trying to be the 'good friend' while waiting for an opening."
"Exactly!" Jobe exclaimed, missing a shot in the game. "See, this is what I'm saying."
"So what's stopping you from handling it?"
"J would be pissed if I started drama. You know how she is about her studies and shit."
"Listen," Jude's voice turned serious. "Sometimes you gotta risk making your girl mad to protect what's yours. Remember when that presenter kept flirting with Li at that charity thing?"
"When you 'accidentally' spilled wine on him?"
"Exactly. Li was proper vexed, but man needed to know his place."
They were quiet for a moment, just the sound of gunfire from the game.
"Just talk to him," Jude finally said. "But make sure he knows what time it is. These uni boys think they're slick."
"Speaking from experience, big bro?"
"Shut up and cover me, I'm pushing this team."
They played a few more rounds before Jude's phone buzzed. "Lila's calling. I'm heading off."
"Whipped," Jobe teased.
"Says you. Or should I say, soon to be you?" Jude logged off before Jobe could respond.
Left alone with his thoughts and the game, Jobe couldn't help but smile. Maybe his brother had a point. Another picture from Justine lit up his phone - yeah, he was definitely whipped.
This was new territory. In all his past relationships, he'd never had to have a "stay away from my girl" conversation. But here he was, in some shop in Leeds, hood pulled up to avoid recognition, waiting for Keyon.
When he spotted the guy strolling in, puffing on a vape like he hadn't a care in the world, Jobe knew this wasn't going to go how he'd planned. He'd found Keyon's account through one of Justine's Instagram posts, shot him a DM expecting to be ignored, but Keyon had agreed to meet, almost too easily.
"Jobe Bellingham," Keyon greeted, a hint of amusement in his voice that made Jobe's jaw clench. "What can I do for England's rising star?"
The way he said it, like this was all some joke, had Jobe reconsidering Jude's "knock him out" approach. But he'd promised himself - and silently promised Justine - that he'd handle this properly.
"Think you know why I'm here," Jobe said, keeping his voice level.
Keyon took another pull from his vape, the sweet scent filling the air between them. "Enlighten me."
Yeah, Jobe thought, this guy was definitely taking the piss. His brother's words echoed in his head: Sometimes you gotta risk making your girl mad to protect what's yours.
"You need to back off Justine," Jobe said directly. No point beating around the bush.
Keyon's eyebrows shot up. "We're just friends, man. Working on an assignment together."
"Yeah? That why you're texting her at 2 AM?"
"Didn't realize I needed your permission to text my classmate." Keyon's casual tone had an edge to it now.
Jobe stepped closer, dropping his voice. "Listen, I'm trying to handle this respectfully. Man to man. But if you don't start respecting boundaries…"
"Or what?" Keyon interrupted, blowing vape smoke in Jobe's direction. "You'll what, exactly? Your girl knows we're just friends."
"See, that's where you're wrong," Jobe felt his temper rising. "My girl told me she shut you down. So what's your play here? Waiting around hoping we break up?"
Something flickered in Keyon's eyes. "Like I said, we're just friends."
"Nah, bruv. You're hoping to be her shoulder to cry on. The good guy. But here's the thing - there's nothing to cry about. We're solid."
Keyon's casual facade cracked slightly. "For now."
"Is that a threat?" Jobe stepped even closer.
"Just an observation. You footballers aren't exactly known for loyalty, are you?"
Jobe's fists clenched at his sides. He wanted nothing more than to show this prick exactly what footballers were known for. But he forced himself to stay calm.
"Last warning," he said evenly. "Back. Off."
"Or what?" Keyon challenged.
Jobe smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Or next time, I won't come alone. And trust me, my brother's a lot less diplomatic than I am."
"You're threatening me?"
"Nah, just letting you know how this plays out if you keep disrespecting my relationship." Jobe's voice was deadly calm. "The late night texts, the lingering looks, the 'friendly' study sessions - it stops. Now."
Keyon's cocky demeanor faltered slightly. "You can't dictate who Justine's friends with."
"You're right, I can't. But we both know you don't want to be just friends. And I'm telling you right now - that's not happening."
"You seem pretty confident about that."
"I am." Jobe straightened to his full height. "Because unlike you, I actually know her. Now are we done here, or do I need to make myself clearer?"
The tension crackled between them for a moment before Keyon finally looked away. "Whatever, man. She's not worth all this drama anyway."
"Watch your fucking mouth," Jobe growled.
"Relax," Keyon backed up, hands raised. "I'm out. You can have your WAG."
It took everything in Jobe not to swing at him for that comment. Instead, he watched Keyon retreat, knowing this probably wasn't the end of it.
After leaving the shop, Jobe slid into his car, his hands still slightly shaky from holding back his temper. When his phone lit up with Justine's text, his mood instantly lifted: Miss you x
"How bad?" he texted back.
"Real bad x"
"Well, maybe you won't be missing me much longer…" he replied with a smirk, already starting the engine.
The drive over to her wasn't long, but it gave him time to cool down from the Keyon situation. He put on some music, trying to focus on what was ahead rather than the confrontation behind him. The roads were relatively empty, making it easy to push the speed limit a bit.
When he pulled up to her building, he texted: "Knock knock" before hitting the buzzer.
Justine's face lit up when she opened the door. "What are you doing here?" she squealed, jumping into his arms. The tension from earlier melted away completely as he caught her.
Following her into the flat, Jobe took in the controlled chaos of exam season - textbooks and notes scattered everywhere, empty coffee cups on every surface, and what looked like three different study guides spread across the coffee table.
"Why are you really here?" she asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
"Can't I just miss my girl?" he deflected, pulling her closer. "How're exams going?"
She rolled her eyes. "They're going. Almost done."
"Speaking of almost done…" he started. "Winter break's coming up. Mum's planning Christmas in Norway this year. Want to join?"
"What?!" Justine's eyes widened.
"Come on, I'll miss you. And you've hung out with my family before."
"Yeah, as a family friend. Not as your girlfriend."
He caught her annoyed look. "Small change."
"It's a big change," she insisted.
"Lila will be there," he coaxed, knowing exactly how to convince her. "Mum's cooking. Plus, we could see the northern lights, go sledding…"
He watched her resolve crumbling, fighting back a cocky smile. This was Justine - she couldn't resist the adventure of it all, especially when mixed with the comfort of his family's warmth.
"Fine," she conceded.
Jobe pulled her into a kiss, keeping things with Keyon to himself for now. This was all he needed - his girl in his arms, saying yes to spending Christmas with his family. The rest could wait.
Besides, he thought with satisfaction, Keyon wouldn't be a problem anymore. Not with Justine coming to Norway for Christmas. Some battles were won with fists, others with family holidays. Either way, Jobe knew he'd won this one.

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (1072): Wed 5th Mar 2025
I read a little bit about the Battle of Hastings today and I discovered that after the Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson was killed in the battle, his mother offered William Duke of Normandy the weight of her son’s body in gold if he returned it but he declined. What a fucking idiot. Do you know how many prospectors risked their entire lives just to find a little nugget of gold? This prick is offered Harold’s weight in gold if he brings it back to his my mother and he says no. What’s more is they could have force fed the corpse a load of mud so that it would get even fatter and then when they returned it just tell his mother that he developed an eating addiction since she last saw him. I think would be funny if someone died and got loaded into the crematorium oven but the funeral company forgot to take his Apple Watch off his wrist. So as the body was being incinerated the app on the watch that tells you how many calories you’ve burned just slowly goes up into the thousands then the tens of thousands.
Later on I read about the winter gardens at the Sunderland museum. They’ve got lots of exotic plants from all over the world and when you walk in it’s incredibly hot and sweaty because it’s trying to replicate the conditions of a rainforest. I think if they were going to do it authentically there should be a speaker system pumping in the sound of chainsaws and a load of monkeys screaming in horror. This would be handy if you wanted to murder someone because you could lure someone to a secluded part of the winter gardens, take out a chainsaw cleverly hidden in a guitar case and then you could take out the chainsaw, hack your victim to bits and the other people in the museum would think that it was just the sounds from the speaker. It’s a shame that they’ve stopped making the show Vera because I could’ve pitched that as a plot for an episode. Although I’m sure if I just threaten the makers of that show with a chainsaw they’ll happily bring it back for a one off special edition.

Sunderland App Development: Good user experience
Good user experience
Apps should reach for effectiveness and efficiency through a good user experience. Only in this way will generate in the consumers a series of emotions that give him confidence to repeat. Therefore, usability is a fundamental mechanism when it comes to customer loyalty in the field of mobile applications.
How, when and where?
It is very important to have the context in which the application will be used: Should the application be used in motion? Or will users be able to interact with it from home? All these aspects will determine the degree of usability that an app must submit.

Nebula Labs named as Second Best App Development Company in England
Nebula Labs has been named the second-best mobile app development company in England by Hyperlink InfoSystem. In an article, designed to help prospective clients find the best mobile app development companies to collaborate with in the rapidly expanding industry, Nebula Labs was featured alongside some of the top names in mobile app development such as Komodo, Enigma Interactive and Mkodo. In the article, Hyperlink InfoSystem praised the Nebula Labs team’s ‘amazing performance’ to date and commended their ‘full dedication’ to projects.
Despite only having officially launched in Summer 2017, the article comes as the latest in a long line of praise. Just two months after our official launch, Nebula Labs was nominated for three Dynamo awards: ‘Innovator of the Year’, ‘New Business of the Year’, and ‘Commercial Project of the Year’. In addition to this, our co-founders Dylan Mckee and Nic Flynn have each been nominated for further awards – with Nic having been shortlisted for a further Dynamo Award in the ‘Rising Star’ category and Dylan having been nominated for a Big Chip Award in the ‘Best Mobile Application’ category. Nebula Labs was also named as ‘One to Watch’ in The Journal‘s business section last month alongside seventeen other firms in the region on track for further success in 2018.
Nebula Labs’ plaudits come after an outstanding first year in business. Our expert team have successfully provided innovative solutions to a wide array of problems faced by businesses across different sectors. For example, we created ‘The Parking Fairy’, an app that uses the North East Combined Authority’s Open Data Service to create a propriety bespoke algorithm that magically informs users of the nearest parking space available when they enter Newcastle City Centre. This received national press coverage and the app was even endorsed by the Shadow Minister for Digital Economy. Last year, we also built the Newcastle Scaleup Summit app, which consisted of a full event schedule, social media integration and a ‘heat map’, that highlighted the busiest parts of the event using a combination of background location visits and geofences around venues. The app received widespread positive recognition and was nominated for the prestigious Dynamo North East Dynamite Awards in several categories. On another project, we experimented with artificial intelligence algorithms to predict and detect leakages and energy wastage around council-managed sites for Northumbrian Water. We worked with +ADD Strategy at their Sunderland Software City agile innovation hack to turn this concept into reality, going on to win their hackathon. It’s fair to say Nebula Labs have had a very successful first year in business and we anticipate a bright future ahead for the company.

News round-up: The university regulator won’t ‘bail out’ failing universities
As it emerges that some universities are near bankruptcy, there has been a heated debate about whether the government should – or would – allow them to fail
Stormzy: Oxford University turned down my scholarship offer
The Guardian, 08/11/2018, Sarah Marsh and Dan Hancox
Stormzy has accused Oxford University of rejecting his offer to fund two scholarships for black British students, a proposal that was instead taken up by Cambridge University.
The grime artist was speaking at the Barbican in London, where he was launching his book Rise Up: The #Merky Story So Far.
UK and Australian universities launch ‘co-created’ online degree
Times Higher Education, 08/11/2018, Chris Havergal
Two universities on opposite sides of the world have launched a co-created online postgraduate degree.
In one of the first collaborations of its kind, Australia’s Deakin University and Coventry University in the UK are offering a postgraduate course in entrepreneurship on the FutureLearn platform, drawing on research and expertise at both institutions.
Safe spaces on campus have ‘gone too far’
The Times, 07/11/2018, Rosemary Bennett
Campus safe spaces have gone too far and students are not encountering unpopular views and rigorous debate, the head of the Office for Students has said.
Sir Michael Barber accepted that quiet places had a part to play but said the idea that a whole university should be a safe space was wrong. Inviting controversial speakers was important, he said, as was a “diversity of perspective” in lectures and seminars.
We won’t bail out failing universities, says higher education regulator
The Guardian, 06/11/2018, Richard Adams
Universities should not assume they will be bailed out from a financial crisis, according to the head of the higher education regulator in England, who likened them to overconfident banks before the global financial crisis.
Sir Michael Barber, the head of the Office for Students (OfS), said the regulator would only act to protect the interests of students, and warned that failing institutions would not be propped up.
‘Press reset’ to win back overseas students
BBC, 06/11/2018, Judith Burns
Overseas student numbers are “flatlining” and the government must “press reset” to tempt them back, says a cross-party group of MPs and Lords.
International students bring huge benefits, but restrictive policies mean they increasingly go to the US, Canada or Australia, says the report.
A key recommendation is to remove students from immigration targets.
MPs want OfS to rule on ‘acceptable levels’ of v-c pay
Times Higher Education, 05/11/2018, John Morgan
MPs have called for England’s regulator to “publish strict criteria on acceptable levels” of vice-chancellors’ pay, for universities to publish breakdowns of how fees are spent, and for higher education to shift “away from the traditional three-year degree model to a more flexible, less linear approach”.
The Education Committee’s report on Value for Money in Higher Education, published on 5 November, also urges the government to “address the regressive system of student support which has led to the decline in part-time and mature learner numbers”, with a shift to a funding model “which allows a range of flexible options including credit transfer and ‘hopping on and off’ learning”.
UK universities ‘bleeding their business schools dry’
Times Higher Education, 05/11/2018, Anna McKie
A survey of 114 senior staff at 77 business schools, conducted by the Chartered Association of Business Schools, found that contributions to the parent institution accounted for the majority of spending at 61 per cent of business schools.
At nearly four in 10 schools (39 per cent), the contribution accounted for between 51 per cent and 60 per cent of expenditure. At nearly one in five (18 per cent), it accounted for between 61 per cent and 70 per cent. And at about one in 20 (4 per cent), it accounted for between 81 per cent and 90 per cent of spending.
Ministers urged to fund university bail-outs
i Newspaper, 02/11/2018, Richard Vaughan
Ministers have been warned they must send a ‘clear message’ that they will not allow a university to go bankrupt amid concerns over the state of the sector’s finances. At least three universities in England are close to insolvency, with providers having to resort to taking out short-term ‘bridging loans’ to survive. It has prompted concerns among students that insufficient measures are in place to support them if a university goes under for the first time in British history. Unions have demanded ministers send a ‘clear message that allowing great institutions to go bust will be a disaster both locally and nationally’.
Government bill for student choice apps rises to £425K
Times Higher Education online, 02/11/2018, Simon Baker
Sector representatives have questioned the UK government’s decision to plough another £300,000 into developing digital tools that use graduate salary data to help students make choices about where to study.
Earlier this year, the Department for Education said it would share £125,000 among tech firms that proposed the best ideas for using the Longitudinal Education Outcomes data on graduate salaries by institution and subject as part of an app or web tool for making study choices.
Would a university really be allowed to go bust?
BBC News, 01/11/2018, Sean Coughlan
Hundreds of thousands of young people and their families are currently applying for university – going on open days and checking out shiny promises on websites.
They might have had an anxious look at Thursday’s headlines, with the i newspaper warning that three unnamed universities were on the “brink of bankruptcy”.
Are those thinking of committing tens of thousands of pounds to a degree course at risk of seeing it collapse?
‘GoCompare’ style app will level playing field for poorer students, minister says
The Independent, 02/11/2018, Eleanor Busby
The universities minister has come under fire for saying an app will help “level the playing field” for poorer prospective university students.
The government hopes a digital tool, which will compare graduate outcomes like “GoCompare”, will help poorer students to better understand how a degree from the right university can help their futures.
Three UK universities on the brink of bankruptcy and more reliant on short-term loans ‘to survive’
i Newspaper, 01/11/2018, Richard Vaughan
At least three universities are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, with growing numbers of institutions resorting to short-term financial loans “just to survive”, i can reveal. Increased competition for students, falling numbers of 18-year-olds and tighter immigration controls on international students have contributed to pushing universities closer to collapse than ever before, experts have warned.
Have university leaders changed after the vice-chancellor pay scandal?
The Guardian, 01/11/2018, Harriet Swain
Over a few days in September, five universities announced their vice-chancellors were leaving: Nigel Weatherill stepped down from Liverpool John Moores with immediate effect, Christopher Snowden announced his retirement from Southampton next spring, Brian Cantorsaid he would leave Bradford at the end of the year, while Iain Martin quit Anglia Ruskin for Deakin in Melbourne, Australia.
Meanwhile, new vice-chancellors were starting at the universities of London, Reading, East London, Sunderland and Belfast. Ian White was revealed as the replacement at Bath for Glynis Breakwell, who left following controversy over her £468,000 pay package. He will be earning more than £200,000 less.
University in London to stop making unconditional offers
The Guardian, 31/10/2018, Matthew Weaver
A university in London has banned the controversial practice of offering prospective students unconditional places in a move designed to ‘maintain standards’. St Mary’s University in Twickenham announced the plan after admitting that a number of students who had been given unconditional offers did not go on to achieve their expected grades.
Such offers, which were given to almost a quarter of students in this year’s cohort, allow students to accept an undergraduate place without meeting their A-level or BTec grades predicted by teachers. They are seen as an attempt to fill course places irrespective of academic requirements. Post-exam admissions are seen as a better gauge of academic standards and more likely to benefit students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

‘Unscrupulous’ essay mill companies are using social media to tempt students into cheating
Daily Telegraph, 27/10/2018, Camilla Turner
“Unscrupulous” essay mill companies are using social media to tempt students into cheating, the higher education quality watchdog has warned.
Firms have been infiltrating private Facebook groups for incoming freshers to advertise their services, as well as contacting students directly by sending them personal messages on social networking site.

Seltzer: Top 5 Homegrown Players in MLS history
October 4, 201810:00AM EDT
Considering the fact that Homegrown Players will populate about half of this year’s 22 Under 22 list, it only made sense to rank the top products of that signing mechanism since the rule was instituted a decade ago.
Even though some of the current HGPs carry an astounding amount of potential, we opted to confine the qualifying requirements for the list to achievements already on the ledger at this time. Kellyn Acosta and Gyasi Zardes narrowly missed making this list, while the youthful likes of Tyler Adams, Alphonso Davies and Jordan Morris still have more than enough talent and time to breach the current top five.
Fagundez in action for the Revolution. | USA Today Images
The shifty playmaker became New England’s first Homegrown in 2010, and no other HGP can match his total of 216 career MLS matches.
Still just 23, Fagundez has already chalked up 48 goals and 40 assists in MLS play, putting him a good 2019 season away from cracking the league’s all-time top 50 in both categories. Using his attack production trajectory, he also looks a great bet to join the 20 current members of the league’s 50 goal-50 assist club by early in the 2020 season.
Because the Revs have more often than not missed the playoffs during his tenure (and he was left on the bench for the entirety of their 2014 run to the MLS Cup final), Fagundez has yet to raise any championship silver. However, he did help steer the club to a U.S. Open Cup runner-up finish in 2016.

The D.C. United netminder was the third-ever Homegrown Player signing all the way back in 2009. Since then, the local product has started each of his 193 MLS games, logging 73 wins and 51 shutouts to date.
All three of those sums mark club records, and Hamid also stands 14th all-time in league play on both the shutout and save lists. A year after backstopping the Black-and-Red to a 1-0 triumph in 2013 Open Cup final, Hamid added both Best XI honors and the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year prize to his trophy case.
Hamid has also recorded two clean sheets in his six U.S. national team caps, including one on the way to celebrating the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup title.
Najar featuring for Honduras. | USA Today Images
The Anderlecht right-sider was the second D.C. United Homegrown player, joining up six months after Hamid. Najar scored five times as a 17-year-old during that 2010 season to win the MLS Rookie of the Year award.
Najar followed it up with a five-goal, six-assist campaign the next year. After the 2012 season, he made the switch to the Mauves, and has been a regular starter when fit for the Belgian power ever since. In addition to helping Anderlecht win three league titles, Najar remains the only HGP to have ever played in the UEFA Champions League.
The 25-year-old also has four goals in 35 Honduras caps, and with two appearances at Brazil 2014, is one of only two Homegrowns to have featured at a FIFA World Cup.
Miazga (L) defending Brazilian star Neymar. | USA Today Images
Currently on loan to Ligue 1 side Nantes from Chelsea, the New Jersey native has grown into quite the dependable defender. Miazga became a lock starter while helping the New York Red Bulls take the Supporters’ Shield in 2015, earning the big move to Stamford Bridge.
Though he’s only managed a pair of Chelsea appearances thus far, Miazga is currently in his third season of being a lineup mainstay out on loan. The back liner spent two seasons with Eredivisie battlers Vitesse, helping the Arnhem outfit book a pair of Europa League invites and hoist the first piece of silver in club history with a 2017 KNVB Cup triumph.
While Miazga has but nine USMNT caps at this time, he is now arguably first choice on their right center back depth chart. Like Hamid, the 23-year-old was a member of the 2017 Gold Cup title squad.
Yedlin at Newcastle United. | Reuters/Matthew Childs
There have been a few learning curve bumps along the way, but the first Homegrown in Seattle Sounders club history has developed into a bonafide English Premier League right back with Newcastle.
Yedlin started 55 of his 56 Sounders games, making the MLS All-Star team in both seasons spent in Seattle. He was a member of the club’s Supporters’ Shield/U.S. Open Cup double-winning side in 2014. A move to Tottenham offered precious little playing time, but he got his first taste of the EPL on loan to Sunderland.
A permanent transfer to Newcastle followed, where Yedlin immediately helped the Magpies win the Championship crown to earn Premier League promotion. Since returning to the English first division, the Seattle native has started 36 of the 41 matches he was healthy for and netted his first EPL goal at Manchester City last month.
A veteran of 54 U.S. national team caps at the “grizzled old age” of 25, Yedlin already has three World Cup outings and five Copa America games to his credit. As he looks the favorite to be the right back starter for years to come, those totals stand a great chance of increasing.

France v Belgium: World Cup semi-final, European battle of world stars
France v Belgium: World Cup semi-final, European battle of world stars
France v Belgium: World Cup semi-final, European battle of world stars
World Cup 2018: How Kylian Mbappe lit up France v Argentina
2018 Fifa World Cup semi-final: France v Belgium Venue: St Petersburg Date: Tuesday, 10 July, 19:00 BST Coverage: Live on BBC One, full radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 live and text commentary online and in BBC Sport app
It has been billed as the “derby between pals”.
Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final pits 1998 winners France against the ‘golden generation’ from neighbours Belgium.
Both teams were among the pre-tournament favourites, but only one can reach Sunday’s final in Moscow.
Victory would set up a showpiece against Croatia or England – who meet on Wednesday – but who will progress?
BBC Sport takes a look at a fascinating battle both on and off the pitch.
A clash of styles?
There have also been 19 draws between the two European sides
In players such as Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba, these sides boast some of the world’s most devastating attacking players.
But their managers utilise the quality at their disposal in different ways.
France boss Didier Deschamps – who is aiming to emulate Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer by winning the World Cup as both a player and manager – has often been criticised for failing to get the most out of his squad.
Functionality, rather than flair, has been the key so far in Russia. They needed a late own goal in their opening match against Australia, edged past Peru 1-0 in their second, then played out a dull goalless draw with Denmark.
They did impress in beating Argentina 4-3 in the last 16, but that kind of open game is not Deschamps’ style.
“If you are looking for 5-0, don’t come to a World Cup, you won’t get this,” he said.
While Deschamps has not always garnered positive headlines, Martinez’s spell as Belgium manager has been almost flawless.
A surprise appointment, taking the job three months after being sacked by Everton, he has had a big impact.
He has not tasted defeat in a competitive game as Belgium boss, his last loss in a non-friendly match the Toffees’ 3-0 defeat by Sunderland in May 2016.
Martinez has overseen a run of 19 wins and five draws, culminating in an impressive 2-1 victory over Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Belgium’s haul of 14 goals is the most at this stage of a World Cup since 2002, when eventual winners Brazil had 15.
Speaking after that game, former England captain Alan Shearer said: “The big question about Belgium was ‘are you a team of individuals or can you come together as a team?’ He has gelled them together.
“That has got to come from the manager. There is a huge difference between where they are now and where they were two years ago.”
Time to deliver for ‘golden generation’
England know all about having a ‘golden generation’ of players.
Theirs failed to win any international silverware, but Belgium’s are on course to win the biggest prize of all.
The Red Devils won all of their games in the group stage and came from 2-0 down to beat Japan in the last 16 before that superb quarter-final showing against the five-time champions.
World Cup 2018: Brazil 1-2 Belgium highlights
They exited at the quarter-final stage of both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 European Championship, so is time running out for this talented crop of players?
“It is important for everyone to understand that Belgium has a population of 11 million and the current generation of players did not happen by accident,” said Martinez.
“There is a very clear structure within professional football in Belgium. It is a country focused on developing its young talent.
“We can only be ourselves and we already have time to use this World Cup as an advantage with the newest generations.”
‘Bizarre’ situation as Henry plots France’s downfall
Henry (right) and Deschamps (left) lifted the World Cup trophy together in 1998
Possibly the most intriguing storyline of this semi-final comes off the pitch.
Thierry Henry was born near Paris and scored 53 goals in 123 appearances for France, winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
But he is now plotting his home country’s downfall as assistant manager of Belgium.
“Thierry Henry is really important for us,” said defender Toby Alderweireld. “He tells us stories from his playing days and they inspire us.
“If he says something, it always turns out to be something helpful. His presence, his World Cup experience, is all a very positive influence.”
Tuesday’s match pitches him against a former team-mate in Deschamps. The pair were never beaten in the 21 matches they played together for France.
Deschamps said: “It is bizarre because he is French and will be on the opponents’ bench. But he is someone I really appreciate and I am happy for him.”
Belgium midfielder De Bruyne is sure Henry “will want us to come out on top” – but France full-back Lucas Hernandez thinks it is a win-win situation for the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward.
“All France knows him, what a great player he was and what an icon for football,” said Hernandez.
“But if we win, he will also be happy because he is a Frenchman.”
‘A derby between pals’
This meeting will be the first between bordering nations since 1986, when West Germany met France.
Belgium playmaker Hazard was born near the French border, with Le Soir newspaper calling him “the most French of all the Belgians”. A photograph which has surfaced on social media appears to show Hazard and his brothers in France kits.
Le Soir describes this game as “a derby between pals”, adding: “This 74th derby between France and Belgium will be played in an atmosphere of a joyous neighbourhood get-together.”
In the village of Warneton, which straddles the border, people are struggling to pick a team to back.
“I think we’ll support France, but also Belgium, at least a little bit, because they’re our friends,” one resident told France3. Another said: “We’re happy because we support both, and what’s great, is that one of them will make it to the final!”
Three key head-to-heads
Antoine Griezmann v Romelu Lukaku
Another tournament, another in which Griezmann has shone for France. The Atletico Madrid forward netted six times at Euro 2016 to win the Golden Boot as his team finished runners-up to Portugal.
This time he will be looking to go one step further.
Griezmann has scored three times so far in Russia, one fewer than Lukaku. England’s Harry Kane leads the way with six.
Griezmann has scored seven goals in his past six knockout matches in major tournaments, while Lukaku has been directly involved in 20 goals in his past 13 games for Belgium – 17 goals and three assists.
Kylian Mbappe v Eden Hazard
Teenager Mbappe announced himself on the world stage with a brilliant man-of-the-match performance in France’s 4-3 victory over Argentina.
The Paris St-Germain player put on a devastating attacking show – his lightning speed and keen eye for goal helping him score twice and win a penalty.
Prior to that, his goal against Peru made him – at 19 years and 183 days – the youngest player to score for France in a major tournament.
Belgium captain Hazard, meanwhile, has already chipped in with two goals and two assists.
Both players like to run with the ball, too. Of those left in the competition, Mbappe (37) and Hazard (30) are the top two players for dribbles attempted.
“He apparently used to watch videos of me when he was younger,” Hazard told RMC Sport. “Now, it’s the other way around. I have a lot of respect for what he’s achieved at his age.”
Paul Pogba v Kevin de Bruyne
The battle for midfield superiority – made in Manchester.
United’s Pogba and City’s De Bruyne will be looking to exert their authority in the middle of the park, setting the tempo for their side.
As their main statistics show, De Bruyne has created three times as many chances as Pogba so far, but the Frenchman is able to win the ball back more often than his opponent.
Pogba De Bruyne 359 Minutes played 360 242 (78.1%) Passes (accuracy) 216 (81.2%) 5 Chances created 16 314 Touches 282 39/72 Duels won 17/37 34 Ball recoveries 24
