The Sonic Dreem Teem
To start off the blog is probably one of the series Wave Master is best known for - Sonic. We’ll be profiling the 5 people who have been most instrumental in developing and enriching the music of the series from the Dreamcast onward.
PART 1: Jun Senoue
Tumblr media
Probably the most famous musician working for Sega and the one most people think of when they think of Sonic music. Jun joined Sega in 1993 and is one of their longest-running inhouse musicians. He has a self-admitted reputation as a rockstar thanks to his side work as the guitarist of Crush 40, his prominent status within Sega, and the solo albums he’s released that collect his work (aptly named “The Works”).
Jun’s specialty is as a guitarist. His distinct style of modernized classic rock was codified by his work on Sonic Adventure 2, and is instantly recognizable. He plays with a variety of different subgenres of rock, including industrial, heavy metal, ska punk, thrash, fusion, acoustic, and symphonic. However, thanks to his joining Sega during the Genesis era, Jun also has an apt skill in synthesized music more inline with the traditional Sega sound.
Contrary to popular belief, his role in Sonic 3 and Knuckles was relatively minimal, only composing bonus stage themes and jingles (most notably, one any fan of the series should know), but he first got to really show his stuff in the Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island, before securing his status as sound director for the hedgehog’s 3D debut, Sonic Adventure; working together with Kenichi Tokoi and Fumie Kumatani to bring the series to a new age and a new sound.
Jun moved to San Francisco to join Sega Studio USA in 2000, where he served as lead composer for Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic Adventure 2. After Sonic Team Japan took back the reigns in Sonic 2006, the geographical distance and general desire for a reboot in the series’s sound resulted in Jun stepping away as lead composer. During this time, he climbed the Sega ladder into more of a supervisory position, providing occasional new tracks, coordinating and recruiting the singers for vocal songs, and producing many of Sega’s album releases.
Following a restructure in 2008 which saw the closure of Sega Studio USA, Jun returned to Japan and since then has been much more actively in the compositional trenches. He’s returned to his duties as Sonic’s lead composer on special occasions, including Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic 4, Sonic Generations, and Team Sonic Racing, provided guest contributions to games like Puyo Puyo Champions and Super Smash Bros. Brawl+Ultimate (where he sealed Sonic’s epic entrance with a terrific performance of S3′s Angel Island Zone), and played live at several concerts both with Sega and with Crush 40. He assisted Tomoya Ohtani in recruiting singers around the world for Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll, and played guitar on his aptly-titled track with Skye Sweetnam, Lava Rock.
youtube
Jun’s soundtracks are marked heavily by his frequent collaborations with outside artists. A huge fan of a wide variety of rock and music artists, Senoue is  surprisingly well-connected to the music industry. Thanks to this and his fluent English, he is usually the one to contact and recruit the Sonic series’s wide variety of guest singers and composers, along with generally representing Sega. Senoue’s frequent collaborators include Tony Harnell, Ted Poley, Julien-K (and their side project Circuit Freq), Tee Lopes, Cash Cash, Bentley Jones/Lee Brotherton, TORIENA, Hyper Potions, and of course, Johnny Gioeli. He almost always plays guitar with his trusty bassist Takeshi Taneda by his side. Likewise, he often returns the favour by playing guitars on tracks by his fellow Sega composers. In 2005, Senoue released an album called “JxJ: READY!” featuring voice actress Junko Noda, and in 1998 made a very rare non-Sega album appearance as a guitarist on Super Robot Wars Vocal Collection 2, further showing his willingness to collaborate outside the box.
Notable quote:
I started playing piano and keyboard when I was 3-years-old. I kept playing them 'til 12, then stopped when I moved to Panama, and started playing bass under the influence of the band Duran Duran... I thought the bass player, John Taylor, looked cool.
Then I started playing guitar when I was in high school. The reason I changed from bass to guitar was simple -- I wanted to be the kid in the spotlight! [laughs] During that time, MTV was airing many rock band videos and that made me want to be a rock star. I played in many bands when I was in high school and during my college days. Then... I don't remember the exact reason, but I started writing songs for console games at Sega in 1993. I just wanted to find some work where I could use my music talents, so I joined Sega and now making music is my full-time job!
Notable games worked on:
Main/Lead composer: Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island, NASCAR ARCADE, Sonic Adventure series, Pro Yakyuu Baseball series, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (Episode 1 and 2), Team Sonic Racing
Additional composer: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dark Wizard, Metal Head, Daytona USA Circuit Edition, Sega Rally 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Angel Island Zone), Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, Puyo Puyo Champions, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Mega Man 4 Medley)
Guest musician: Burning Rangers (guitar on Burning Ship), Super Robot Wars: Vocal Collection 2 (guitarist), NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (guitarist), OutRun: 20th Anniversary Album, Sonic Unleashed (guitarist on Super Sonic VS Perfect Dark Gaia), Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll (guitar on Lava Rock), Chain Chronicle (guitarist for Chain Band), Sonic Forces (guitar on Infinite’s Theme and Eggman’s Facility), Sonic Mania Plus (guitar on Time Trials Plus)
Tumblr media
Personal Thoughts:
Hard rock isn’t actually my favourite genre of music, but Senoue is someone I personally admire for his attitude, his knowledge and respect for his own inpirations, and love of teamwork and collaboration. Although he’s often easily pigeonholed, his music is a lot more diverse than he’s often given credit for, and the deep, rich grooves of his music are simply phenomenal. That being said, like most great guitarists, Senoue is at his best when he works together with other musicians, something he seems happy to agree with when you consider he basically thinks of composing for Sega as being in a band. SA1, for example, is one of his most diverse outings when it comes to the range of genres and influences he covers, and you can tell it’s because he was playing off and working more closely with Tokoi and Kumatani than in SA2 and Heroes (where he was more isolated from them due to working in San Fran). His soundtracks for Generations and TSR are triumphant love letters to the series that made him famous, with excellent remixes of classic tracks, all-star lineups of carefully chosen collaborators (and Richard Jacques), and a sense of freshness and energy that really come from Senoue knowing how to choose people he plays off of and contrasts well.
Favourite tracks:
Pleasure Castle, Windy and Ripply, GUN Fortress, After the Adventure, Keys the Ruin, Bingo Party: Lap Music, Mega Man 4 Medley, Sand Road: Lap Music, Casino Park, Sea Gate, Chemical Plant (Modern)

Watching Dan Floyd (co-creator and original host of Extra Credits) play Okami on his LP channel, PlayFrame, (specifically the Kamui chapter in the latter portion of the game) got me back on my hype about the Ainu!  I’m still super underqualified to talk about the culture or its traditions in any great depth or specificity, but here’s a dump of anime, manga, and game stuff that have made direct use of Ainu representation over the years, and a brief overview of who the Ainu are:
The Ainu were one of several indigenous peoples living in Japan prior the unification efforts that ended the famous Warring States period. (i.e. that part of Japanese history everyone loves because of all the samurai running around)  The Ainu were a people living in the northern most island and parts of the northern regions of the central Japanese islands. (there is also Ainu diaspora in parts of Eastern Russia and Manchuria)  They were effectively an independent country/kingdom throughout the 1600s, albeit one that became gradually economically dependent on trade with the central Yamato people (the central Japanese who are effectively the direct ancestors of the modern “Japanese” as we know them.) until the expansion of unified Japan during the Meiji Restoration effectively saw them sublimated into the central Japanese homogeny.
In 1899 legal policies were enacted by the Meiji government that effectively erased all legally identifiable concepts of indigenous or minority identities within Japan: There was one “Japanese” people, culture, and government.  As a result cultures like the Ainu in the north and Ryukyuan in the south saw whole generations assimilated into the new unified Japanese identity, and huge chunks of their culture, history and traditions (often orally passed down) were effectively lost in the 100 years that followed.
But what I think people don’t realize is just how recent and meaningful this trend of openly acknowledging the Ainu, let alone with any meaningful accuracy, in pop-media really is!  The 1899 act was only repealed in 1997; and the Ainu only became a legally recognized and protected as an indigenous culture in 2008.  Not only are the people who fought for the rights of the Ainu still alive, they are still fighting for much of their land, history, and identities back right now.
Recent estimates say there are roughly 25,000 recognized Ainu people, and less than 100 speakers of the native Ainu language left in the world today.
The images btw are from...
Shumari (1974-1976) by Osamu Tezuka: a stunningly early example of Ainu in pop culture, but absolutely in-character for Tezuka to be ever ahead of the game
Dagger of Kamui (1985) a novel by Yano Tetsu, adapted into an anime film by studio Madhouse and legendary director Rintaro: featuring a protagonist explicitly identified as “half-Japanese” and “half-Ainu” openly recognizing the Ainu as their own distinct people
Samurai Spirits/Samurai Showdown (1993-2019) the fighting game series by SNK
Shaman King (1998-2004) by Takei Hiroyuki: dabbles in religions, mythologies, and cultures from all around the world, including the Ainu
Okami (2006) Clover studio’s hit adventure game: explores a mytho-historical fantasy Japan and all kinds of regional folk lore
Golden Kamui (2014-ongoing) by Noda Satoru: set during the fallout of the russo-Japanese war of 1904, in which a veteran soldier and a young Ainu girl search for a lost Ainu treasure. recently got a new anime series (still airing new episodes!)

June 11, 2021
Friday was sadly our last full day in Charlotte. Haley and I slept in til 11 or so, then went to a new coffee place, called Mac Tabby. It was a cat cafe! Haley had never heard of a cat cafe, even though there is one in Bellingham. The coffee shop was just across the street from us. It turns out, though, that you have to pay to play with the cats. Haley doesn’t even like cats, so we just got our coffee and headed out. I got an iced white chocolate mocha with blackberry and lavender and it was very tasty!
We took our time getting ready—we watched Hoarders, did our make up, and decided what we should do for the day. We decided on a place to eat our first meal of the day—The Local Loaf. It was just a seven minute walk from us, just a few a streets off the main drag of NoDa. Around 2, we walked over there. It was really hot and we were really hungry after our lazy morning!
We walked the side streets and found The Local Loaf. It was a bakery and little market, like one we have in Bellingham called Elizabeth Station. We sat at a small table and ordered at the countertop. Haley got a burger and Sprite (which we grabbed right from the fridges) and I got a Croque Madame sandwich and a Diet Coke. Haley and I were actually a little shaky while we were waiting for our food; I guess we shouldn’t wait as long to eat next time! We also ordered some cabbage and potato hash brown balls. Our main dishes were amazing! I love Croque Madames (it’s like a fancy grilled cheese with a cheese sauce and runny egg on top). But neither of us liked the hash browns. Oh well! The Local Loaf actually got pretty busy after we came in. When we were leaving, the only cook came out and gave us some free ice cream cookie sandwiches! That was so kind!
We decided to stay in the NoDa area for our last day. We were going to brunch the next day in Uptown, so we were just gonna stay in our neighborhood for the day. We walked back to our Airbnb quickly, so that hopefully our ice cream sandwiches wouldn’t melt! We put them in the freezer, then left to walk around NoDa. Some guy started cat calling Haley, but we just ignored him, haha. We checked out a few stores in the area and took some photos.
While we were out, my friend from Bellingham texted me! Angela and Mark used to be Andrew’s roommates. Now they have two beautiful daughters! Kennedy is 9 months old and Madison is almost 3 years old. I don’t see them super often—the last time I had seen them, Madison was under a year old. On my trip to Europe in 2016, Mark and Angela had been on a five month world trip and the only days that matched up with my three month trip, was one night in Portugal. It was such a fun night in Lisbon! Anyway—Angela and the family were outside of Charlotte and wanted to meet up! We decided to meet up in about an hour, at the Wooden Robot location we tried to go to the night before!
Haley and I spent about an hour in our Airbnb—packing and organizing for our early morning the next day. We both got as packed as we could, then headed out for one last night in Charlotte. We ran into Mark and the family on the short walk to the brewery. They are in a camper van! They left Bellingham in April and have just been driving around the United States as they please. They had already done the Southwest area and were now doing some things on the east coast. Haley and I continued to the brewery and got a couch for us all to sit on. I ordered a flight and Haley got a class of wine—classic!
Haley and I spent about two hours hanging out with Mark, Angela, Kennedy, and Madison. Madison was a little shy and mostly on her tablet playing games. But it was so nice to catch up with Mark and Angela! Haley and I both got to hold and play with Kennedy! She’s a really happy baby. Mark and Angela shared two flights of beer, which was fun to do with them!
After catching up for a while, Haley and I decided it was time for ice cream. Next door was a place called Jeni’s. I had been to one before—the original Jeni’s in Columbus, Ohio, with my friend Keegan! Haley got gooey butter cake as her favor and I got two half scoops of salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks and bramble berry crisp. Wow, it was some tasty ice cream! We walked a few blocks and our next stop was the Dog Bar! Haley was so excited! She loves dogs and playing with them. We each ordered one drink and hung out with dogs for about an hour or so. There were maybe 15 or so dogs there, with their owners. One of my favorite dogs was a 12 year old basset hound mixed with a black lab named Skeeter. There was a really funny black lab that played in the water the whole time. We FaceTimed Mom and Dad, then it was time for dinner!
We tried a couple spots around NoDa that had some long waits. We decided on a place called Jack Beagles that was outdoors. There was a band playing some music and a full restaurant. We shared some nachos made with waffle fries and bbq pulled pork and some mac and cheese with a hot dog in it. It was like we were kids again, hahah! The food was good and the service was super nice! After dinner, we decided to call it a night. We headed back to our Airbnb and played Trouble and drank some wine. We watched Hoarders too, and I took a shower, hoping my hair would dry when we were sleeping. It was such a last full day in Charlotte! We ate our ice cream sandwiches, too! We stayed up a little too late, but just until 1. :]

Ghana vs Nigeria: Super Eagles to lodge at Noda Hotel in Kumasi ahead of first leg
Nigeria will be staying at the 3-star Noda Hotel in Kumasi when they play Ghana in the first leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff tie.The Super Eagles will leave Abuja on Wednesday 23 March for the crucial clash in Kumasi scheduled for Friday 25 March.Aisha Falode, a member of the Nigeria Football Federation Executive Committee, who led a federation inspection team to Kumasi on Friday, said Ghana Football Association recommended the hotel as other major hotels in the city had been booked. The Kumasi venue was a last-minute decision after the Cape Coast Stadium was not approved by CAF to host the game, Falode told PUNCH Sports Extra,There were so many government and corporate activities already lined up during the week of the match in Kumasi. Im told the president of the country (Ghana) is also hosting some kind of political events there. So, all the hotels are booked and filled. When asked if the Noda Hotel was right for the Eagles, Falode added, Its not the kind of hotel you expect the Eagles are used to, but its also a hotel you cant say isnt befitting of the Eagles. The hotel wont be as important as the pitch where theyll play. The three-time African champions will take on great rivals Black Stars at the dreaded Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, just 9km from the Noda Hotel.Ghanasoccernet.com can reveal that the hotel has a multilingual staff and 79 air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. The hotel also provides free Wi-Fi throughout the building. Noda also features an outdoor swimming pool and fitness centre, an on-site restaurant with free continental breakfast, a bar/lounge and free private parking. The second leg is set to be held in Abuja four days later. The winner of the tie will be in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup later this year. source: https://ghanasoccernet.com/
