About a year ago, the awesome folks at Devolver Digital had us design and produce a trailer for their game Gunbrella. I helped with the animatic along with director Chris Beaver and animation supervisor Tyler Richlen. If I remember, the animatic had a pretty quick turnaround, which is why we split it between multiple people. Normally one person handles a 30 second animatic just fine.
Added the final for comparison. The whole Boutique team did a bang-up job getting things to final. And even though my design wasn't chosen, I enjoyed playing in the noir style.

Salem: I have to thank you.
Summer: (Panting)
Salem: You have given me my entry into living a better life. Say "thank you, mommy."
Ruby: (Baby, Fusses)
Salem: She says "thank you". Oh, and just so you know.
Salem: No hard feelings, right? (Passes goon) Deal with her.

I just played Gunbrella, long post time. First, context: I like metroidvanias, I like action-adventure platformers in general, and I like gritty stories that fit in on the darker end of town. I'm also not one to punch-down at indie studios. I simply don't expect the same level of polish or volume out of one person in their garage or a small team with day jobs competing for their time and energy. Thankfully, Gunbrella isn't asking me to go easy.
Gunbrella is an action-adventure platformer with a coat of noir paint, a speakeasy attitude, and a hand-me-down suit jacket soaked in blood. The core mechanic is a bit much for some, so I'll take it slow: Gun + umbrella. The gun part is simple: bad guy appears, gun makes them disappear, and with a naturally short range (videogame buckshot ain't what it used to be), you'll be constantly dodging and darting during combat. The umbrella, on the other hand, is a little more multifunctional. You use it to dash, hover, hook, and reflect incoming projectiles, and you can do all three of those things at almost the same time, back-to-back or concurrent with one another. Some might have reservations about a platformer meant for keyboard and mouse (and it is this one's opinion that this game is best played on keyboard and mouse) but with both of your main actions bound to right and left click, and the critical need for quick reactions and precision aim, I would say that it's well worth it from a design perspective. On to other business...
The story. I won't spoil much, but most of my favorite character archetypes make an appearance of some sort and, despite the short runtime, the narrative covers a lot of ground. Plus, there are a handful of optional sidequests in addition to the main objective, each one deepening the world and introducing new characters or expanding on the ones you already know and love. Look, I'm a shamelessly biased lover of indie games, and a lover of somber atmospheres too. Simply put: if you like the sound of a lowball of whiskey on a rainy afternoon, but you don't of the money, palate, or weather for it, this will do you just fine.

Bought Gunbrella for my Switch 2 days ago & just finished devouring it. It’s one of those games where by the end you’re frustrated or are slightly confused believing that you’ve missed something but not due to any negative reason. Rather it’s me coming away wishing the game was longer because of how patently amazing it is! The Gunbrella’s mechanics make it so fun to use & lends to fantastic aerial ballets of carnage & I can absolutely see amazing speed runs or no damage fights done by people who become true experts at it. The story itself is a basic vengeance plot but excels in granting depth & character to both the heroes, villains & civilians in the cast. I just am so frustrated with how short it was & in that way is not too dissimilar to Katana Zero, another action platformer that rewards deft handling of the controls & combat encounters. Begging anyone even slightly interested in the game to purchase it in the selfish hope that the devs at Doinksoft create a sequel

Review: Gunbrella
Less a case of reinvention for reinventions’ sake, it’s the mix of familiar genre staples with a widened focus on smaller details that ends up with Gunbrella proving to be a brief, yet highly-satisfying entrant for action-platformer fans. In looking towards those minute moments — from NPC dialogue to pixel art and even the music that accompanies your travels — Doinksoft successfully broaden not just the studio’s palette of aesthetics and gameplay mechanics alike, but so too an understanding on how to build out a world to engage with.

Devolver Digital Distributes Delays In Delightful Direct
Skate Story and The Plucky Squire are only a couple of games Devolver announced delays for into next year. Check out the rest of the delays and what's still coming in 2023 here:
Prolific indie publisher Devolver Digital released a new video today announcing the delays of a handful of its upcoming slate to 2024. Mind you, only some things are moving into next year, but a hefty chunk of games will be cooking a bit longer before they are released. In the video above, cheekily titled “Devolver Delayed,” some highly anticipated games previously intended to launch this year…

September 2023 Update
Tumblr media
Belated greetings! And also, happy 1 year anniversary to writing these updates!!
One release I missed from September 5th is Chants of Sennaar, a puzzle adventure game that I've heard a lot of good things about. Excited to play it myself!
Cocoon releases Sept 29. Notably, it's being lead by the lead gameplay designer from Inside. After Playdead (apparently) imploded and multiple leads created their own game companies, I've followed them actively as a big fan. Somerville was one Playdead-alumni game that I very much did not like, so all this is to say, I really hope Cocoon is great! It looks like a big departure from the Inside formula.
Other September releases coming up...
Heretic's Fork - Sept 13 (deckbuilder tower defense?)
Gunbrella - Sept 13 (roguelike -- fun demo!)
Underground Blossom - Sept 27 (the newest game from the Rusty Lake team!)
