I'm finally back at drawing! Here's a doodle of ElecHead, the titular character of the indie game of the same name!
It's a puzzle/platformer where you have to use your head (figuratively and literally) :o
I highly recommend it! :)

ElecHead
Rating: 3/5. It's a fun cute platformer, but nothing new, and not super challenging or extensive.
The premise of ElecHead is that you are a robot with an electric head. When you stand on platforms, you activate them, turning on both aids like moving platforms and hazards like fireballs and lightning. You must use your platforming skills to selectively move around the level, only activating things when they need to be enabled. Over the course of the game, you unlock more complex abilities such as throwing your head away from you, making the puzzle solving more complicated.
It's a cute concept, and I did enjoy my time with this game. It's especially helped by the wonderful graphics and music. Everything about it is designed to be a retro feast for the eyes and ears, and I really enjoyed the few hours I spent in this pixelized world. I will also say I loved the game's sense of humor, and the second ending especially I found hilarious.
However, nothing in this game is super surprising or exciting. I think the concept of platforms that appear/disappear when you jump was actually done better in Closure. The game itself is short and I never found it to be that challenging - at least on the platforming part. To unlock the second ending, you have to find 20 special chips, and I did end up using a map to help me locate those. I also really disliked one section that required speed-runner-level skills, and I actually edited my save file to avoid having to do that part - I think the absurd jump in skills required from the rest of the game to this one section justifies it!
So overall, it was a fun game and I definitely enjoyed it, but I don't know if it's worth seeking out. If you really love retro platformers or spending a lot of time searching out hidden collectibles, you might love it! And it is pretty cheap, so if you have time to kill, could be worth checking out. But I wouldn't move it to the top of your game list!

As a man of exquisite taste in game glitches, which runs from AGDQ this year are you most looking forward to?
Basically just Celeste and Mega Man: Rock N Roll, as far as better known titles go, though I'll likely pop in on the Breath of the Wild stream at some point to see what absolute horseshit the BotW community has come up with in the past few months – I confess I haven't been keeping up with it lately. As for shorter and lesser-known runs, ElecHead caught my eye, and I'm keen to see how Unsighted has evolved since its showing at Flame Fatales last August. The Katana Zero TAS exhibition might be good for a laugh, too.
Oh, and the obligatory Metroid race, of course. I see they're racing Metroid Dread All Bosses Glitchless this year, which isn't a category that I've followed before, so it'll be fun to see what that looks like.
(I might have wanted to catch the Metroid Prime co-op randomizer exhibition also, but I'm working that day and it's at an awkward time for me. I'll probably look it up on YouTube after the event is over, though.)

Can you rate the robot from elechead?
For context, we talked on stream about the Robot Body Scale, which is a scale ranging from 1 to 10 of how happy I, Zoey Gauntletqueen, would be for a robot body to be my body.
5 means it's as good as the human body I've got, anything above is better, anything below is worse. It is not a rating of how good the robot is as a design or character overal.
So this lil robot here is cute! But it's likely very small, and its only ability is transmitting electricity and detaching its own head. It doesn't seem very powerful or feminine, lacks full hands, can't say I'd be too stoked about being in this lil body.

What's your favorite game you played this year?
Excellent question! I'll start with some honorable mentions first...
Mario Wonder seems like an obvious pick for GOTY, and I did have a wonderful time playing it, but I haven't quite found myself wanting to come back to it again and again like I hoped. I absolutely love the badge system though and definitely want to incorporate some of its ideas into my game.
Mario Kart 8DX isn't really GOTY material but I did have a lot of fun with those 48/96 track races. And on that note I got into Trackmania a little bit as well this year(ish), its medal system is very fun and rewarding.
I didn't play it myself but I did watch a huge supercut of Persona 5 Royal which I surprisingly quite enjoyed! Looking forward to going back and playing some of the older titles when their remakes come out.
I really want to mention some new 2023 indie game here but uh, I guess I didn't play too many new indies this year? I passed on Pizza Tower and was sorta disappointed by Viewfinder... best I can think of was ElecHead, a nice short and sweet puzzle platformer. Its total lack of language, even in the menus, is pretty cool and inspiring.
And finally, my bizarre pick for favorite game I've played this year probably has to be Trouble in Terrorist Town. I know picking a multiplayer game like this is almost a cop-out but I've watched and played so much of this game, it's so much fun. I'm always thinking about new traitor plays, especially with the game still getting new updates and items... easy game of my year.

Elevator Pitch - Platformer
Working title: Sprung
Pitch: Sprung is a platformer where the player can't jump, instead they must use springs to navigate the world and activate puzzles.
Inspiration: My main inspiration was the spring board from the 2D Mario games. The mechanic caught my attention because the spring could be picked up and repositioned, through this interplay of mechanics I imagined a platformer where the main character couldn't jump. Given an infinite number of springs to use however would equate to having a jump ability with a relationally worse experience for the player as more inputs would be required. This lead me to the idea of making it a puzzle platformer where the limited number of springs would encourage the player to place their springs with more intention.
Target audience: I am targeting players that are looking for an experience with a mechanical appeal. The mechanics of the game lend themselves to experimentation and consideration as compared to other platformers that focus on rapid movement and environmental navigation.
Similar titles:
VVVVVV: In this game players are able to navigate the environment by inverting gravity. There is no traditional jump button but players are able to emulate a jump by bouncing off the ceiling.
Super Mario Maker 2: This game features many auxiliary mechanics that emphasize traversal in unique ways. This includes level goals such as no jumping.
Elechead: There's an interesting mechanic in this game where the player is able to throw their own head to power certain platforms. Removing your head starts a timer and the player has a limited amount of time to go and retrieve it or they get sent back to the last checkpoint.
Unique differentiator: The mechanics explored in this game are present in other titles but as a supporting mechanic rather than as the primary mechanic. As a small focused experience the game positions itself as a consumable experience.

My top games of the year so far
Pikmin 4 Demo
Minecraft. Again.
Life is Strange 1 (sweeped the 2023 Brainrot Awards)
Life is Strange True Colors (the only game in the series I actually replayed through this year; LiS1 somehow out-rotted it though)
The 3 hours I've played of Pokemon Legends Arceus
SnapCube's playthrough of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
Tears of the Kingdom (Haven't played it at all but y'all seem to be having so much fun so I had to add it)
Elechead (Cute but very short puzzle game!)
DROD / Celeste / SubTerra (basically any game I will sometimes open to build levels in)
Omori (Started playing it this year, really cool story and fun battle mechanics!)
Me sitting there and considering going back to optimize my Pikmin 4 demo playthrough
Thinking of actually going back and finishing like 90% of the games I play and then never doing it
