An unhinged rant about the old name of Minecraft's "Single Biome" world option and also a suggestion for a new worldgen type that would be neat I Guess but also I'm running on like 2 hours of sleep and I need to go for a fairly long walk in like 6 hours because I didn't do so yesterday and also my lunch plans basically require me to do so, anyway
Ok so when Single Biome was first added it was called "Buffet" generation and like. From that name you'd expect it to allow you to mix-and-match biomes, like if you were eating at a buffet, right? But you can't! You can only pick one biome and a worldgen type! I don't go to Harvester or Toby Carvery or some other restaurant that no-one outside the UK has heard of and go up to their respective self-service food thing and then get like. A bowl of Just Pasta or a plate of Just Roast Potatoes (respectively) or whatever and ignore the other things for the rest of the meal.
And like, they renamed it to "Single Biome" (though personally I would have gone with something like "Custom Order" or something because it's like you're ordering your map from options on a menu, and also I like food metaphors and also food in general) and also took out the option to make Nether and End-style worlds (which they shouldn't have done since now it's lost most of its utility), but they kept the old header?
Tumblr media
So anyway I think it would be cool if they reworked Single Biome, right, but instead of a single biome you can pick as many as you want from a list, and the worldgen type, and whether or not structures spawn. Maybe even incorporate some of Superflat's functionality as well and let players add things like extra layers of blocks and structures that aren't meant to spawn in the selected biomes or whatever. Maybe even have presets for biome-selection and structure settings so you can pick the "Default Overworld" preset and the Nether worldgen type to make an Overworld-flavoured Nether.
I don't know how to end this in a way that flows naturally. Check out @wjbsart I guess; a couple of days ago (at time of writing) I did some fanart of a game I like and it got like 5 notes, three of which were me. Also listen to Do You Like Rock Music? by Sea Power.

on java 1.21.1 it generates at the lowest negative y level automatically (on the default superflat the standing y-level is -60)
if you need it higher you can add air before the bedrock in the preset?
it would be [number of y level minus all other blocks after this]*minecraft:air, [all other blocks, e.g. minecraft:bedrock, 2*minecraft:dirt, minecraft:grass_block]
e.g.
10*minecraft:air,minecraft:bedrock,2*minecraft:dirt,minecraft:grass_block;minecraft:plains <- the default superflat moved up completely by 10 blocks, so standing y-level is -50
Does anybody know how to start a superflat world in the negative y coordinates? I know you can edit what layers are what material and how many there are, but I don't know how to start it at the negative coordinates and I need to for this map I'm making,,,

Superflat survival flattens out
I haven’t played Minecraft in quite a few weeks. I recently started up a new world and playing in it. I really had a blast playing in a superflat survival world and wanted to try another challenge in the same vein. But I have already ran headlong into a network of catch 22s. Starting with the village that spawned at start up there was a zombie siege that took place seemingly before I even arrived. Only a single village in the entire superflat world and it was already laid siege to by a horde of zombies. As soon as I arrived the doors were all smashed in and there were villager zombies crawling out of every building. I got a nice running start with some iron gear that included armor, sword, and a couple of picks. There were only jungle saplings in the bonus chest and zero oak trees in the world. So I have no villagers to make an iron farm and no oak trees for apples so zombie villagers can be cured at least. And I stupidly ate the two apples I did find in the village. This because there were enemies left and right and I had to heal. Had I known there would be no other villages in the map I would have held onto them like treasures.
The only other way to cure them is to go to the nether. But I have only three diamonds. I can make a pick with it but cannot build an enchanting table. I can scoop lava and use the lava/water trick but unless I want to run back and forth between stronghold to base I may have to build my portal where the last of the lava is. And I lost two sources to a cobblestone generator malfunction.
Even if I did use the diamonds on the enchanting table I have no lapis and no villagers with which to purchase lapis. So the enchanting table wouldn’t do me much good anyway.
My only conclusion is to make a pick and gather obsidian from the lava in the stronghold and fish up enchanted books and gear. But I need iron to make an anvil. Again, I need villagers to make an iron farm. Can’t get villagers without apples and brewing. Can’t brew without the nether. But apples at the moment are virtually impossible unless I cheat. So already this challenge has failed. I would be able to achieve it if I played on pc. But i play on console and superflat worlds on console have superflat nether and superflat nether don’t come with fortresses, and without fortresses... no blazerods no rods no brew no eyes of ended no end.
I really wanted to accomplish this once without cheating. But it’s just not possible. I get the superflat nether. But why can’t they have nether fortresses?
I may have to restart this challenge with a different world and use a preset at that. Maybe I should do desert again? I’ve had it with all the buttfucking slimes!

While I knew diamonds by themselves would be improbable in my preset superflat world, which I named Arrakis, after the Planet in Dune, since it is a mesa desert world and Arrakis seemed fitting, I could still count on diamond tools provided by Fremen... err... villagers once I established some trading. Like the people of Arrakis, I am making the best of my very limited resources. I did find two diamonds in one of the desert temples, which I immediately fashioned into a sword. After having raided all temples, the two diamonds are the very last I will find in this world. I did allow myself one cheat. But just the one and nothing else. I gave myself a mule spawn egg from creative mode. I need something to travel around the desert with and mules are better than donkeys, and carry cargo like donkeys. But I must care greatly for her, for she is the only equine I will have. If she dies, I will not give myself another one. I found a couple of saddles in the temples which was why I caved and cheated just a tiny bit. There were no horses anywhere. I didn't want the saddles to be useless. I figured on not getting diamonds at all. The work-around would be to get diamond tools instead from villagers. I also fashioned a discount cobblestone generator for tools and limited builds. Though every build is made of sandstone, red sandstone, glass, and oak wood. I got both the water and lava from the villages. I can't make arrows, so I buy them. I also found a mineshaft if you can believe it. I don't recall checking the abandoned mineshaft option, but it's barely explorable, because it's buried under 30 layers of sand. The only thing it was good for was track and minecarts. All the chests were empty. Which is a shitty glitch on console right now. I have been having quite an adventure and enjoying this challenge a lot. My next task will be to build a fishing area. I have lots of tnt from the temples, I have my infinite water source. Easy peezy.

I have been thinking for a while about how difficult, if not impossible it would be to play survival in a superflat world. Those are pretty much so tied into creative mode, that on console, merely starting a superflat world gives you the same consequences as using creative mode or turning on host privileges. Namely, disabling trophies and leaderboards. Not even 4J believes you can do a pure survival game with a superflat world. My guess is because superflat worlds don't have ores at all to mine. Even if you choose tunneler's dream preset. It's basically layers upon layers of set materials of your choosing, or preset worlds from a list of options, ores notwithstanding. There are no extreme hills, no caves, no mining, no oceans. But there are ways around just about anything. I have been thinking, and i concluded that it may be possible, if not terribly difficult to get by in a flat world, under two conditions. Check the bonus chest option, and choose the desert preset. Why the desert? Simple. Desert temples. They will often appear several to a map. I had three of them in the one I chose. Next in your imperative survival list are villagers. They will provide nearly everything you will end up needing. Fletchers can sell arrows, blacksmiths can sell you tools and weapons, and you can trade things like rotten flesh, string and leather (from rabbits). Cobblestone and obsidian is possible with generators, and blacksmith structures provide lava. No coal? No problem. Provided your bonus chest came with tree saplings, as most do, you can make charcoal. If you have enough villagers, you might even be able to produce an iron farm. As for water, which will be hard to come by in a superflat, a village often has a generated well. If you can gather about 3 to 6 pieces of iron, from blacksmiths, temples, or zombies, you can make two buckets, which is all you need to have mastery of water. As I said, living in a superflat world would by no means be an easy feat, but with just a few advantages, might be doable. Things like the nether fortress or stronghold will not be available, unless specifically selected in a list among other things, but it will be right out in the open not hidden. So those things would be up to you.
