‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Finds Its Toph: Miya Cech Cast In Season 2 Of Netflix Series

Miya Cech (Surfside Girls, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah) has landed the key role of fan-favorite Earthbender, Toph, in the upcoming second season of Netflix‘s Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has started production. The casting was unveiled at Netflix’s Geeked Week live event Thursday with a teaser, which you can watch below.

Ever since Avatar: The Last Airbender��was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3 by Netflix, fans have been buzzing about the role of the powerful, tiny Earthbender Toph Beifong, with some calling the casting decision a make-or-break for the series as Toph is considered one of the most important, beloved characters of the franchise.

To find a young Asian actress for the blind teen character, Netflix launched an Open Casting Call.

Here is how the Toph character was described in the Casting Call: “She is sassy, confident and unfiltered. For most of her life her strength and formidable earthbending skills have been suppressed, but now on the run as the Avatar’s earthbending master she is uninhibited to become the fierce warrior she believes she is inside.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world that is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. “Benders” are people that have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. The “Avatar” is the only individual with the ability to bend all four elements.

The series stars Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai.

Cech was already on Netflix’s radar as she had a supporting role in the streamer’s 2023 movie You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and did an episode of its Emmy-winning limited series Beef. She also was a lead on the Apple TV+ children’s adventure series Surfside Girls, among a slew of other acting credits.

EXCLUSIVE: Max Thieriot, star, co-creator and executive producer of Fire Country and co-creator/executive producer of spinoff Sheriff Country, has signed a first-look deal with the studio behind the CBS drama franchise, CBS Studios.

Sounds like he's got a good deal over at CBS! Lot's of info about his time at CBS, how Fire Country came to be, etc. Makes me happy to see a network (hopefully) supportive of the talent that they want to hold on to (we've seen it with Jared and his two holding deals).

Nice! He has a lot of great things to say about CBS (not that he'd say something bad, lol), but it seems to mirror the experience Jared has with the company and how supportive they are of their talent.

I didn't expect any additional news on Fire Country: Surfside. The network will need to see what kind of reception Jared's character gets and, if good, they would also need to work out the various contracts with the actors and showrunners, decide a location, etc.

(I did think it was interesting to note that they mentioned in the article that Sheriff Country was being filmed in Toronto. With Fire Country in Vancouver, it means they're not tied to filming a spinoff in the same location as the original.)

HOW DO WE MOVE FORWARD? HOW DO WE STAY SAFE?

It is critical, more so than ever, that everyone in our community not only be aware of these issues and take them into consideration, but also have open and transparent communications with a shared goal of preserving the safety of the people, land, and wildlife of our beloved poblados: A concerted effort by everyone, old and new, together.

This includes making sure to integrate with your community and hopefully full-heartedly. We offer the following suggestions:

Know your neighbors. A friendly “Upe” can bypass the lack of doorbells, and allow for an introduction to a relationship along the lines of a Gump to your Forest. Small towns are incredibly conducive for neighbors looking out for you in times of need, and vice versa, even if you don’t like each other.

Connect with your community. Join your local ADI (Associacion Desarrollo Integral de [insert town]). They are the only legally recognized, government sanctioned organization at the community level (in accordance with Law 3859 (15)). Each town has different projects and priorities, therefore it’s important to join in the local conversation; so you not only know what’s going on, but can be a part of the solution with suggestions, attending important town halls, volunteering, voting for your representatives, etc.

ADI Tamarindo, one of the highest performing ADIs in CR, has been able to vet and impressively connect their community to the local police on the ground with an app called SoSafe. It costs them $1 per year, per user. While Potrero has not been able to make the direct connection yet, the app is free. As a user, you can receive/make notifications on robberies, suspicious activities, water breaks, even lost dogs. While of course it is not optimal for the community that the police in Flamingo/Potrero/Brasilito are not directly connected and held responsible to reports on the app yet, it is worth noting SoSafe is a useful data source with metadata attached, especially since there is a tendency to refrain from filing (desperately needed) official police reports, denuncias.
