not every change that netflix made to the atla remake was a bad one, hell, some of them made a lot of sense. but the one that bothers me the most was how they handled sokka and hakoda's relationship. while it's absolutely true that sokka looked up to his dad and felt like he'd never measure up to his standards as a warrior and a leader, but having him overhear hakoda saying the latter about him to bato was just... wrong. there is NO chance that the dilf we know and love would ever disparage his son like that, especially considering how guilty he felt about leaving sokka and katara to join the war. i imagine that they did this as a replacement to sokka's lost sexism arc, further proving that trying to make characters less "problematic" than their original versions typically hurts the story's progression rather than letting it flow naturally.

Nobody could make me hate her. I mean shes just a skrunkly. The big sister syndrom is kicking in everytime i see her. And dont even get me started on the hate her live action actor is getting, like have you lot completely gone insane. im not any less chronically online than some of them but go touch some grass and stop sexualising a fucking child.

What do you MEAN you're going to remove one of the most important aspects of Sokka's character arc in the first season? What do you MEAN you're going to remove Sokka unlearning misogyny, accepting change and embracing his role as a fighter and protector of the Avatar in order to end the war? What do you MEAN???

Netflix, I don’t know how to tell you this but a woman doesn’t have to be self taught to be a strong female character. It’s ok to let her know her limitation and ask for help. It’s ok to let her get angry, it’s ok to let her be jealous, it’s ok to let your female character have flaws and WORK on them. Your female character doesn’t have to become a master on her own to be memorable, it just makes her accomplishment feel unearned.

This urge to draw her probally came from the new atla live action. Idk if it's going to be good becuse my expectations are lowering with every new information we get. And i hate the whole art direction of the series. And don't even get me started on the costumes.

But putting that aside, ever since i watched atla 2 years ago, i couldn't wait to draw all the characters in digital medium ( : And here I am, finnaly doing so.

The patterns, tattos and jewerly are inspired by inuit coulture ( i know its not really accurate).

Anyway, I hope you like this piece

OH AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT THE ATLA REBOOT

the sexism thing??? we all know it's fucking stupid and purely performative to take out sokka's feminism arc, but can we talk about the fact that He Is Still Sexist????? he still thinks that what he does (running the village's defenses, which they've never needed) is vastly more important than what she does (wash the clothes, cook, etc). and yk what?? the live action reboot AGREES with him. it doesn't show or even mention katara doing any work around the village. all we see katara doing is practice waterbending - the only interesting thing that original episode 1 sokka seems to think katara ever does.

the live action show depicts sokka "doing all the work", fulfilling his traditionally masculine role of warrior/protector, and COMPLETELY DISMISSES whatever "women's work" katara does, as if she does nothing. seems pretty clear to me that the showrunners would love to absolve themselves of sexism by not talking about sexism, while in actuality being pretty sexist themselves

and don't even get me started on sokka not wearing the dress/makeup of the kyoshi warriors' uniform
