QUICK BESTIE got a good starter season of survivor? I’m thinking it might be my new evening show and I know you’re thee expert

But of course, friend! Glad to see you wanting to join in the fun! I love this show so much, and as your resident Survivor Expert (TM) I'll gladly help you start your journey on the right foot.

Here are some seasons I think would work really well for a first-time viewer:

China (Season 15) - My first season, everyone and their mother's first season, and for a reason! A fantastic old school-ish season with great characters, fun challenges, and all the beauty of a jawdropping location that we're kinda sorely missing from new school seasons. There are idols in play and an interesting twist, shocking moments, some iconic characters, and I can tell from experience that I was immediately hooked!

Tocantins (Season 18) - Another one from this era of Survivor, and another fun one to get you hooked on the show. This one introduces a lot of iconic characters, including one of the most legendary, crazy characters (your opinion of the season may vary depending on your opinion of them, but to me they're really fun lmao). Another perfect starter season.

David vs Goliath (Season 37) - If you want to jump right into a modern season to feel more in tune with the game as it exists now (and to watch season 46 live when it airs!), DvG is the place to go. You will get the feel of the new school era with a very enjoyable cast and fun gameplay (also, Mike White is here, of School of Rock and White Lotus fame? Yeah).

These are not, in my opinion, good first picks, but rather fantastic seasons that I think benefit from already knowing a bit more of the game:

Pearl Islands (Season 7) - Like, the crown jewel of old school Survivor. I wouldn't watch it first, I'd watch a couple more so I have a better understanding of the game and can fully appreciate it, but yeah, this one is soooo iconic. The premiere is fantastic, it's got a bunch of stand-out characters, the VILLAIN! It does have a twist that's widely regarded as bad, but it's also regarded as one of the best seasons ever. Save it for after you've watched a couple other seasons.

Palau (Season 10) - Probably one of my favorite seasons, but again, this should not be your first pick at all. This season is so unique, so unlike any other, and it's so amazing because of that. It's not as lighthearted as the rest (you'll know why eventually), but it makes for a fantastic story. I love Palau sooooo much arghhh.

Season 45 - Do you want to start directly with a new era season (41-45)? Why would you? No, for real, why would you? I guess you can watch 45 right before 46 airs so you can know the game in its current state, but def don't make it your very first season. Still, I had a great time with 45, but yeah, new era.

If you want to know what my journey looked like, I did China (15) --> Tocantins (18) --> Pearl Islands (7) --> then decided I was in it for the long haul and just went back to Borneo (1) and started watching chronologically (a fantastic way to watch, imo, since you get to see the game evolve).

Emil Ferris’s long-awaited “My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two”

NEXT WEEKEND (June 7–9), I'm in AMHERST, NEW YORK to keynote the 25th Annual Media Ecology Association Convention and accept the Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity.

Seven years ago, I was absolutely floored by My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, a wildly original, stunningly gorgeous, haunting and brilliant debut graphic novel from Emil Ferris. Every single thing about this book was amazing:

The more I found out about the book, the more amazed I became. I met Ferris at that summer's San Diego Comic Con, where I learned that she had drawn it over a while recovering from paralysis of her right – dominant – hand after a West Nile Virus infection. Each meticulously drawn and cross-hatched page had taken days of work with a pen duct-taped to her hand, a project of seven years.

The wild backstory of the book's creation was matched with a wild production story: first, Ferris's initial publisher bailed on her because the book was too long; then her new publisher's first shipment of the book was seized by the South Korean state bank, from the Panama Canal, when the shipper went bankrupt and its creditors held all its cargo to ransom.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters told the story of Karen Reyes, a 10 year old, monster-obsessed queer girl in 1968 Chicago who lives with her working-class single mother and her older brother, Deeze, in an apartment house full of mysterious, haunted adults. There's the landlord – a gangster and his girlfriend – the one-eyed ventriloquist, and the beautiful Holocaust survivor and her jazz-drummer husband.

Karen narrates and draws the story, depicting herself as a werewolf in a detective's trenchcoat and fedora, as she tries to unravel the secrets kept by the grownups around her. Karen's life is filled with mysteries, from the identity of her father (her brother, a talented illustrator, has removed him from all the family photos and redrawn him as the Invisible Man) to the purpose of a mysterious locked door in the building's cellar.

But the most pressing mystery of all is the death of her upstairs neighbor, the beautiful Annika Silverberg, a troubled Holocaust survivor whose alleged suicide just doesn't add up, and Karen – who loved and worshiped Annika – is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Karen is tormented by the adults in her life keeping too much from her – and by their failure to shield her from life's hardest truths. The flip side of Karen's frustration with adult secrecy is her exposure to adult activity she's too young to understand. From Annika's cassette-taped oral history of her girlhood in an Weimar brothel and her escape from a Nazi concentration camp, to the sex workers she sees turning tricks in cars and alleys in her neighborhood, to the horrors of the Vietnam war, Karen's struggle to understand is characterized by too much information, and too little.

Ferris's storytelling style is dazzling, and it's matched and exceeded by her illustration style, which is grounded in the classic horror comics of the 1950s and 1960s. Characters in Karen's life – including Karen herself – are sometimes depicted in the EC horror style, and that same sinister darkness crowds around the edges of her depictions of real-world Chicago.

These monster-comic throwbacks are absolute catnip for me. I, too, was a monster-obsessed kid, and spent endless hours watching, drawing, and dreaming about this kind of monster.

But Ferris isn't just a monster-obsessive; she's also a formally trained fine artist, and she infuses her love of great painters into Deeze, Karen's womanizing petty criminal of an older brother. Deeze and Karen's visits to the Art Institute of Chicago are commemorated with loving recreations of famous paintings, which are skillfully connected to pulp monster art with a combination of Deeze's commentary and Ferris's meticulous pen-strokes.

Seven years ago, Book One of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters absolutely floored me, and I early anticipated Book Two, which was meant to conclude the story, picking up from Book One's cliff-hanger ending. Originally, that second volume was scheduled for just a few months after Book One's publication (the original manuscript for Book One ran to 700 pages, and the book had been chopped down for publication, with the intention of concluding the story in another volume).

But the book was mysteriously delayed, and then delayed again. Months stretched into years. Stranger rumors swirled about the second volume's status, compounded by the bizarre misfortunes that had befallen book one. Last winter, Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston published an article detailing a messy lawsuit between Ferris and her publishers, Fantagraphics:

The filings in that case go some ways toward resolve the mystery of Book Two's delay, though the contradictory claims from Ferris and her publisher are harder to sort through than the mysteries at the heart of Monsters. The one sure thing is that writer and publisher eventually settled, paving the way for the publication of the very long-awaited Book Two:

Book Two picks up from Book One's cliffhanger and then rockets forward. Everything brilliant about One is even better in Two – the illustrations more lush, the fine art analysis more pointed and brilliant, the storytelling more assured and propulsive, the shocks and violence more outrageous, the characters more lovable, complex and grotesque.

Everything about Two is more. The background radiation of the Vietnam War in One takes center stage with Deeze's machinations to beat the draft, and Deeze and Karen being ensnared in the Chicago Police Riots of '68. The allegories, analysis and reproductions of classical art get more pointed, grotesque and lavish. Annika's Nazi concentration camp horrors are more explicit and more explicitly connected to Karen's life. The queerness of the story takes center stage, both through Karen's first love and the introduction of a queer nightclub. The characters are more vivid, as is the racial injustice and the corruption of the adult world.

I've been staring at the spine of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book One on my bookshelf for seven years. Partly, that's because the book is such a gorgeous thing, truly one of the great publishing packages of the century. But mostly, it's because I couldn't let go of Ferris's story, her characters, and her stupendous art.

After seven years, it would have been hard for Book Two to live up to all that anticipation, but goddammit if Ferris didn't manage to meet and exceed everything I could have hoped for in a conclusion.

There's a lot of people on my Christmas list who'll be getting both volumes of Monsters this year – and that number will only go up if Fantagraphics does some kind of slipcased two-volume set.

In the meantime, we've got more Ferris to look forward to. Last April, she announced that she had sold a prequel to Monsters and a new standalone two-volume noir murder series to Pantheon Books:

Outside was snowing so badly during this night. It hasn’t stopped for the past 4 hours but you didn’t mind it because you were inside the manor.

The air here wasn’t that warm but it was still nice, at least it wasn’t freezing like outside.

You were walking down the hall after you had dinner with the others, well your teammates from the ‘game’ so called you played with them. It’s not pleasing and not even fun at all.. Wonder how haven’t you died yet.

But now you didn’t want to have those gloomy thoughts in your head, so you continued walking. Honestly.. you didn’t want to go to your room. It was boring, but what can you even do after dinner at this weird looking place. Especially when it’s snowing A LOT. The only answer that you hate: Nothing.

Doing the same thing over and over is so stupid-

You stopped walking as you felt like your eyes saw something down in the garden. You tried to look more clearly through the big window.

It was.. a figure?? Wait isn’t this the new hunter that they announced??

The figure looked up and saw you.. (Eye contact…) You quickly hid under the window , holding your breath for no reason at all. Sweat started to form on your face. They looked, terrifying. Those blue glowing eyes staring back at you. It sent shivers down your spine when you remembered their look.

No? Where did they go?! OH NO THEY ARE PROBABLY GOING TO KILL ME. You stumbled and started walking faster, going back to the dining room.

Some people have left. Last time you were there which was like 10 minutes ago there was almost everyone. But now there are 7, which you still didn’t mind,, as long as someone is here you’re okay.

,,Oh hey Y/N! Do you need something?? Are you still hungry?’’ Luca smiled at you as he ate the last spoon of food, chucking it in his mouth.

Luca ignored Emily’s comment and continued eating, still looking at you waiting for an answer. That made you nervous, you weren’t really open here to the adults around you because some of them are mean for no reason, weird and creepy..

,,Come on kiddo, you look so worried, what’s the matter?’’ He gulped the food. He looked like he was in hurry..

,, Its uh,, I thought I saw something and I got scared and now I am here because i wanna eat a fruit.’’ You quickly said as you were shaking a little bit. Luca raised an eyebrow and stared at you confused but quickly shrugged it off.

FUCK!! Wait what if they don’t know about the library?? Yeah! They probably don’t. I usually don’t read the books especially in this library, because there is just a bunch of old boring information. But still I wouldn’t mind reading one there.

As I opened the big library doors, I stopped walking. Yum the smell of old books filling the air 🤞

Looking around for something to read I stopped on the travel books. Not gonna lie I found these type of books interesting, exploring and learning facts about the world around you, too bad I can’t even see it here.

Focusing on the shelf of books I finally found the one to my liking.

‘A guide book to the 1915 Panama–California Exposition’.. Eh I guess that should do it. I tip toed to get the book since it was a little bit high, I successfully got it and made my way to the big sofas.

Looking through the pages while walking there you looked up so you know where you’re going and… You suddenly made an eye contact with a black sclerae and dull blue pupils that were staring at your soul at the moment.

,,AH! You were that person or thing that I saw not so long ago! Uh,, please don’t kill me I would do anything I promi-‘’ a sigh was heard behind their mask making you more nervous that even made your words stuck in your throat. It was a guy.

He positioned himself in a more comfortable position, closing his eyes and relaxing his body. He looked like he didn’t want to talk at the moment.

,,I uh.. sorry for my scream I just got scared and uh.. yeah I will go sorry for disturbing you.’’ Your shaky voice could be the only thing heard in the library.

Getting back with two hot cocoas in your hands you handed him the drink and he took the cup with his cold hands. He quickly muttered a ‘thank you’. He removed a little his mask and drank from it. Only his mouth could be seen nothing else. A satisfied sigh left his lips after he drank the hot sweet liquid, and thanked you again but this time you could hear him clear.

You smiled in response and sat on the sofa once again as you drank your hot drink.

,,This is the third time saying that but.. I have to thank you again.. but this time for the nice welcome.. I appreciate it..’’ You could see his little smile under the mask that was covering almost his whole face.

,,Hey it’s no problem, If you need someone to talk to you can always chat with me ’’

His pale cheeks reddened a bit which he quickly pulled his mask to cover his face now. Behind it he smiled, which you indeed did a great job getting rid of his anxiety.

Katniss, Oh Katniss.

Katniss Everdeen is such an iconic heroine. She sparked so many young girls to pick up archery as a sport. However, there are two different Katniss that exist - the book Katniss and the Movie Katniss. In this post, we will be talking about Book Katniss today.

Katniss is our narrator in the books. It is the first point of view, we get her thoughts and everything through her eyes. Katniss is an incredibly blunt narrator - she tells things exactly how she views them with her opinions mixed in. She definitely suffers from C-PTSD (Complex PTSD) from growing up in Panem.

Names are important in "The Hunger Games". Most of the characters have Roman names, like Plutarch and Cinna, and others have plants. Katniss reveals that she is named after the water plant Sagittaria, otherwise known as "Katniss" or "Arrowheads". The plants grow these potato-like tubers that are edible. Her father taught her that "As long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve" (Collins, 52). From what we get from her name, Katniss is a born survivor and has a connection with her main weapon - arrows.

Second, we can look at her at Katniss' appearance. This is established on page 8 as Katniss describes her friend, Gale. "He could be my brother. Straight black hair, olive skin, we even have the same gray eyes. But we're not related, at least not closely. Most of the families who work the mines remember one another this way." (Collins, 8). Katniss reveals in the same breath that her mother and Prim do not look like her with their light hair and blue eyes. This is because Katniss's mother is from the merchant class.

While there are no official maps of Panama, Katniss ensures we know exactly where District Twelve is. She said, "District 12 was in a place called Appalachia. Even hundreds of years ago, they mined coal here, which is why our miners have to dig so deep.” (Collins, pg 41). Appalachia is a region of the USA that is set in the Appalachian mountains, it makes up "423 counties across 13 states and spans 206,000 square miles" (Appalachian Regional Commission). Most people argue that District Twelve is either in West Virginia or eastern Kentucky on details about the weather and fauna and flora but Collins left the details muddled.

While this is complete headcanon ("ideas held by fans of series that are not explicitly supported by sanctioned text or other media" Merriam-Webster Dictionary), a lot of readers take the location of District 12 and Katniss's description to believe that she is indigenous or a part of the Melungeon people, a marginalized mixed-race Appalachian community. Regardless of whether you believe in this headcanon or not, Katniss's olive skin and grey eyes are an important distinction in her community that she is from the Seam, the poorest part of District 12.

Katniss in the first book is a rough and traumatized young girl. I feel like a lot of people focus on her bitterness at the world. Katniss doesn't trust anything at face value even if she's not in a stressful situation. She wants her family to be safe and well-fed, no matter what it costs her personally. Poaching is a high offense in District 12 after all and she has been going in the woods since she was 11 to feed her family. What most people forget about Katniss is that she is King. She loves her sister, Prim, more than life itself and she tries again and again to make sure she can have some semblance of a childhood then when she meets Rue in the arena, she cannot help but ally her - mostly because she reminds her of Prim.

In later books, Katniss allows the circle of people she cares about to grow. In "Catching Fire", she comes across two women named Bonnie and Twill, on the run from District Eight to the supposed District Thirteen. Despite the fact it might get her in deep trouble because of the Capitol watching her, Katniss helps them.

"First I give them all the food in my pack, grain and dried beans mostly, but there's enough to hold them for a while if they're careful. Then I take Twill out in the woods and try to explain the basics of hunting. She's got a weapon that if necessary can convert solar energy into deadly rays of power, so that could last indefinitely. When she manages to kill her first squirrel, the poor thing is mostly a charred mess because it took a direct hit to the body. But I show her how to skin and clean it. With some practice, she'll figure it out. I cut a new crutch for Bonnie. Back at the house, I peel off an extra layer of socks for the girl, telling her to stuff them in the toes of her boots to walk, then wear them on her feet at night. Finally I teach them how to build a proper fire." (Collins, pg 68).

Katniss is a fascinating character to study because of her complexities. This is barely scratching the surface of her character. In the next post, I'll be examining the Movie Version of Katniss and how she differs from the Book Katniss. See you then.

Today's Focus

11.14.23 - We are not having a great time of it today folks. Aside from dealing with the foot, the antique necklace I wanted to wear today broke as I was putting it on. I thought to myself 'well I'll bring it with me to work and fix it there' only to discover at work that the piece that broke off didn't make it into the little baggie. So now it's lost somewhere in my house and I pray that it's either somewhere easy to spot or that my dad finds it before my cats do.

Work - I have to take a typing test today to be eligible for my promotion, and I'm doing the next 50 pages of redaction, and whatever else happens to come in. Hopefully a slow, quiet day, though I'm prepared to help Claims out (our Adult Survivor Act for adult victims of sexual assault got an extension so we have a huge influx of claims in our office related to that)

On November 2nd 1698 the ill-fated First Darien Expedition arrives in central America and lands in what it christens “New Caledonia” in what is now Panama.

Dates differ from the first, second, to the third, so it’s straight down the middle for this one.

Named after the gulf where modern Panama and Colombia meet, the Darien scheme was hamstrung from the start by poor planning and English opposition. In less than two years, disease and attacks from the Spanish Empire had wiped out more than half the 2,800 Scottish settlers, and the colony was abandoned.

Barely a shadow of it lingers in the bay known locally as Puerto Escoces (Scottish Harbour), where the Scots founded the colony of New Caledonia with an initial contingent of 1,200.

Darien’s mastermind was William Paterson, a Scot who played a pivotal role in the foundation of the Bank of England in 1694. A year later, Paterson helped create the Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies to run the colony he hoped would be a “door of the seas and key of the universe” for a nation hit by economic crisis, famine and English trade curbs.

Though the sum fell short of the amount initially pledged, it was probably equivalent to about 20 percent of the liquid wealth in Scotland at the time. Problems began before the Scots had even left for Darien, with the Company of Scotland overpaying for ships and losing a large sum to fraud. By the time the first five vessels arrived, disease had claimed dozens of lives and the toll soon mounted. Food was scarce and trading the cloth, linen and other goods the Scots brought proved hard. Spanish attacks added to their woes.

King William dealt the final blow, ordering nearby English colonies to deny any assistance to the Scots. In June 1699, the exhausted survivors left New Caledonia for New England.

Very few of them ever saw Scotland again. News of the disaster was slow to reach Scotland and more settlers set sail for Darien in summer 1699. There they met stiffer resistance from Spain and were forced out by April 1700. The Darien Expedition was over.

“S-Boats In The Channel” 80 Years Ago, Today - (Thurs) Nov 19th, 1942: The Indian Ocean, 44 miles NE of Maputo, Mozambique, the Norwegian steamer “SS Gunda” (Pic 1) is sunk by U-181. 38 Dead, 8 survivors. 223 miles SE of Durban, South Africa, U-177 (IX2D) sinks the British tanker “SS Scottish Chief” (Pic 2), part of Convoy PA-8. The ship explodes in a massive blast as her cargo of 97,000 barrels of fuel oil detonates. 36 Dead, 12 Survivors. In a brazen attack, a pack of 6 German Kriegsmarine “S-Boots” come flying across the English Channel and tear into Convoy PW-250. (‘S-Boats’, a lethal and effective German cousin of the American PT Boat, example, Pic 3) And when we say brazen, we mean it – the S-Boats cross no less than 85 miles of open water to hit the convoy roughly 5 miles south of the Eddystone Lighthouse, which is 10 miles south of the harbor mouth of Plymouth. S-116 bags and sinks 2 ships: the British steamer “SS Birgitte” (Pic 4), with 10 Dead, 13 Survivors, and the Norwegian steamer “SS Lab,” (Pic 5) with 3 Dead and 18 Survivors. “SS Yewforest,” (Pic 6), a British steamer, is also sunk, with 11 dead. A very tragic scene plays out for the Royal Navy in this attack… HMS Ullswater (FY-252, Lake-Class, Pic 7) is an anti-submarine whaler – a whaling ship that now hunts Nazi sharks. She goes charging into the fray to protect the convoy, but disaster strikes. S-112 draws down on her, and puts a torpedo into the tiny warrior. She goes down instantly. There are No Survivors. Her entire crew – 34 Officers and Men – go with her. However, the Germans don’t get away unscathed. The German “MN-01” an armed auxiliary, (no pic) is damaged in a gun battle and beached on the north coast of Norway. In a case of irony, off Norderney, Germany, the Sperrbrecher 169 (“Mine Sweeper”; sister ship, pic 8) hits a mine… and sinks. One dead. 253 miles NW of Casablana, a Lockheed Hudson of 608 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (similar bird, pic 9) heavily damages U-413 with depth charges. In Colon, Panama, the US Navy patrol boat “YP-26” (sister ship, Pic 9) is hauled out of the water… and inexplicably blows up on her cradle, cause unknown. Just another day..
