Maybe I’m just an idiot, but I feel like you shouldn’t be allowed to have one character refer to another as her little brother unless he actually is or we have enough background information to know it’s just a nickname.

Season 4 Episode 18 Identity Crisis

Susanna Leijten and Geordi are catching up about their away mission when it is discovered the other crew mates from the expedition have fled back to the site of the mission Tarchannen III. The two join the away team to check on the whereabouts of the fellow Federation members but while they do so Leijten begins having symptoms. Things progress until she ends up in sick bay and Beverly reports that she has begun mutating into another species.

Geordi begins to investigate the footage of his time away at the mission more fervently as Beverly has informed him that he too will soon succumb to the effects. He managed to detect a mysterious shadow in the footage which turns out to be an invisible creature resembling what Leijten is turning into. Beverly's research leads her to the conclusion that the species propagate themselves by invisibly injecting a parasite into hosts that turns them into more of their species. By the time this is discovered Geordi has mutated fully and uses his invisibility to transport off of the Enterprise. A restored Leijten goes with the away team and she manages to convince an almost lost Geordi to come back to the Enterprise with her. The rest of the away team are too far gone with the virus and Picard decides to cordoned off the planet to avoid future mishap.

If Night Terrors covered the horror of losing one's mind through internal means, this episode covers the physical act of metamorphosis. It's both Leijten and Geordi having their psyche slowly fraying as they attempt to figure out what is happening. The notion of the species is also really interesting, propagating itself through the conversion of other humanoids

It is a crime that the character of Susanna Leijten never recurred in Star Trek beyond Identity Crisis. Her friendship with Geordi LaForge and the genuine platonic chemistry between Maryann Plunkett and LeVar Burton is nothing short of legendary. What an episode.
