Xena: Warrior Princess - Dreamworker
Okay, this one was good!
This episode has some of the best quotes. “Wisdom before weapons.” – Xena “Like your breasts aren’t dangerous enough.” – Gabrielle “It may look as it did before, but it’s forever changed.” – Xena Okay, now someone has to tell me, how did that second one there get on air, and people still thought they were straight? I was not expecting to be hit with the little baby gay vibes from Gabrielle…

'Lower Decks' Returns to Classic 'Trek' Ideals... a Classic Villain
The first half of Lower Decks Season 4’s two-part finale, which Mike McMahan described as “the ultimate Star Trek, the ultimate Lower Decks” at NYCC and held back from the press to avoid spoilers, is here at last, and it’s easy to see why he described it that way. Sometimes, studios put big, important franchises in the hands of people they deem will be good for business, regardless of whether the…

Gargoyles
My partner and I have been watching Gargoyles the animated series (the entire series is available on Disney+). And it's... so good??
I've heard people just say "Keith David as Goliath is amazing" and that's all they'll say, no other elaboration, and I didn't really understand what they meant by that, but now I do. His voice is just 10/10, no notes. My partner describes Gargoyles as "Someone watched Phantom of the Opera and was just like 'Yes. That. Except MORE.'" Every character is the Phantom / Frankenstein's monster / a Gothic/Romantic hero.
It is inexplicably a Star Trek alum jobs program?? It feels like half of the episodes you're going, "Waaiiit a second, I KNOW this voice...!" And evil Troi and Riker is just a great concept. The affably evil Xanatos who happens to also be a badass normal in a world filled with supernatural creatures?? Great fun.
I'm maybe about halfway through and just really having a great time.

Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ is perhaps the most well known modern book series inspired by Greek myth. Originally comprising of six books and starting with ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’, the series has sold over 180 million copies worldwide and been translated into thirty-seven languages. It has inspired a Broadway musical, two films, and now, finally, a Disney Plus TV series. Drawing heavily from the books, but also from aspects of Greek myth unexplored in the original series, the Disney show brings to life a wonderful world of myth and magic, of humans and gods.
In the first episode we are introduced to the titular character, Percy Jackson, played by Walker Scobell, who is, in own words, ‘a troubled kid’.

Black Sails: non-spoiler intro post
Show no. 2, here we go!
Nothing in here is a spoiler for anything beyond S1E1.
Plot: In the golden age of piracy, the pirate town of Nassau flourishes. Surviving against the constant force of civilisation-- the Spanish and British navies relentlessly trying to tame it-- it stands as a symbol of resistance against the oppresive powers and all they stand for. But some people on Nassau dream of something more-- legitimacy, a guarantee of survival, or a legacy that will be passed down through the ages. These conflicting dreams and joint resistance will come together to form a story like no other.
Why I want to review this show: I first watched Black Sails about 5 months ago, and the levels of brainrot I have experienced over it were... unprecedented. I need, on a deep, psychological level, to pick it apart and find out why it has imprinted itself on me.
General tags/categories: fantasy, historical fiction, pirates, adult, LGBTQ, queer
Other stuff: If you want to find more people talking about Black Sails, I'd recommend the Fathoms Deep podcast and Rowan Ellis's video

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix - 10.21.23
[Storing my review for Captain Laserhawk here in case Letterboxd removes it if there is a season 2]
I said that in October, turns out the series has disappeared from the site. I clearly had a feeling. I don't remember what my review said but I remember loving this series. I am VERY glad to see that there will be more episodes of it this year.

Xena Warrior Princess: Altared States - Review
What was that opening? What? I'm not sure I even followed the rest of the episode!
What was that opening? What? I’m not sure I even followed the rest of the episode! I think I saw Karl Urban in there somewhere. A child. Gabrielle mentioned that Xena was beautiful. I’m sorry. What did I just witness??? …… Sorry, I just had to reboot my brain. This premiered in the 90s? I mean, I thought the moment in 1×03 was pretty overt with the whole ‘like your breasts aren’t…

Blue Eye Samurai is the Best New Animated Show of the Year
One of the features of Netflix is that thing often just appear, without warning, and can be easily overlooked if you don’t happen to check your home page the day they’re released. This almost happened to me with Blue Eye Samurai, an animated martial arts revenge thriller. I had heard nothing about this show before its release. If I hadn’t heard something about it on social media, I might have…

Castaway Diva (2023)
Tumblr media
Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) must have the best agent because once again, she's starring in a stellar kdrama.
The lighthearted set-up of a girl who aspires to be a singer, while en route for her big break, instead gets stranded on a desert island for 15 years; belies how dark this uplifting k drama can be, as it deals with toxic, abusive relationships.
Tumblr media
Eun-bin acts her butt off, and also trained to sing and play instruments, and as usual, absolutely nails her role. And once again, she picked a project with strong writing and great pacing -- the series flew by, there were no filler episodes.

Shout out to the child actors playing the younger versions of the characters: they were fantastic as well. My only slight complaint is lack of musical variety: all but 2 or 3 of the songs use a I, V, vi, iv (1 5 6m 4) standard pop chord progression.

TV Review: 'Goosebumps' (2023)
TV Review: #Goosebumps: "Letterman and Stoller use the sins of the past to haunt the future for these teenagers, & once the story unravels in episode four, it becomes a layered, well-crafted mystery. the perfect blend of everything that has come before."
By: Amanda Guarragi As someone born in the ‘90s, the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine was everywhere. His books have always centred on children experiencing obscure fantastical events. Each book had a creature that would be directly linked to how the characters in his novels were feeling. Stine often wrote parallels between grief and loss when constructing his supernatural stories. The…
