Its voice quivers in anticipation as it speaks next, fingers stained a light purple from the red juice of its snack and its mouth just slightly red. The more poetic of you might liken its current appearance to that of the beast that has been banished from the island with this murder, but it only proves that there are still monsters that roam Taig.

Our killer begins their tale as they had been since Buttercup’s <3 arrival, constantly on the move and never staying put for long. While others suffered blows from the beast our killer managed to evade it at every opportunity… But was this truly a way to live?

So our killer decided to gamble, a gamble with their life which would define their fate in the end… Approaching a lonely spirit and requesting its aid. Information if they could use their stone to kill the masses, and an answer was shared! An answer that it would certainly work in Arud!

This was enough to give our killer resolve, choosing their victim carefully, someone who would come to the aid in a moment's notice. Contacting the hero of our story, Mugen Miller at 1:00 AM with a text on their phone, urging him to meet them at the mall at that time…

'Meet me at the mall at 1:00AM. I intend to deal with our problem once and for all. I truly hate to admit it but you are the only one I trust to help, the only one who can save us all. I intend to light Buttercup <3 aflame to be rid of it and humbly request your aid in doing so.'

Lying awake in the middle of the night desperately thinking of any way to deal with Buttercup <3 that doesn’t involve killing someone else, Mugen responds to their text.

'THAT SOUNDS INSANE!!! YOU GOT IT BOSS!! I’LL BE ON MY WAY LICKITY SPICKTY SPLIT!!'

But that was never the real plan, was it? Agreeing to meet them at the mall, our killer and victim spoke. Discussing a plan to work together to solve their problem… The two would split up and find the needed tools to slay the beast, to stand together as heroes. Mugen was put in charge of the heavier lifting while our killer had a different plan in mind.

Mugen had chosen to travel to Clucky’s and locate a pot of cooking grease as well as a lighter to start the flame when the time was right… But Mugen had been urged to get something else at the house, so he did not take the time to reunite with our killer! Instead, he found his way to his own room, taking both his and Maria’s sheets from their beds as a safety precaution against the beast.

But where was our killer at this time? They had decided to once again approach the plan in their own way, precautions for their true intentions. Killing was often a bloody mess, after all? So why not stop by Freddingtons and find a new pair of clothes, ones that wouldn’t be missed if they were stained by the blood of the innocent?

So that’s just what they did, finding an outfit that was within a reasonable price range… Why did that matter? Well, in this case, pride was a deadly poison that slowly drained our killer. They wouldn’t be spotted in anything cheap… And they would never steal, they had no reason to do so, after all!

So this prideful confidence brought our killer to the front counter, paying for their own newly acquired suit with ¥20,000 and taking their receipt with them back to the scene of the crime.

The two reunited at last, one with the tools leading to his soon-to-be death and the other with their newly acquired outfit, Mugen had chosen to give our killer the lighter so they could personally set the creature that haunted them aflame when given the chance while the two got to work.

While Mugen put in most of the effort and dirtied his hands, our killer decided to play along and help set up the blankets and sheets as a cover from Buttercups <3 sight. Our killer didn’t want any interruptions for their plan, after all! What our killer didn’t realize in their haste is that their pride would point to them more than they ever had expected, the receipt of their purchase slipping out of their pocket and landing in the grass beside the tree.

All the while Mugen and our killer poured the grease along the outer edge of the barrier, toward the house and unknowingly setting into motion our killer's plan, and once the moment happened our killer was more than prepared!

"--Thank you, from the bottom of my heart thank you for doing this… You’ve made it so much easier for me to finally get rid of all of them once and for all!"

A chuckle from our killer, one full of malice as they flicked on the flame of the lighter with one hand, their other hand gripping their curse stone within their pocket.

"Do you really think this was for Buttercup <3? Honestly, Mugen, I thought you would at least catch on a little bit!"

From this point on, a standoff began, our hero did the unthinkable and reached for his own stone…desperation to be rid of the beast and desperation to save his friends no matter the cost.

"Just walk away, Haru! You don’t have to do this!! We’ll figure out another way to deal with Buttercup <3 together!! I’m not gonna let you die!! And I’m not gonna let you kill my friends either!!"

Just turn and leave and this would all be over. They didn’t, and our killer simply laughed off his pleas. Watching the killer's pure intention of malice was the last thing that Mugen would do, a horrible pain from within as our killer approached, gloating about their successes, how the others would soon join him…

The destruction of his lungs caused him to cough up globs of blood that filled his mouth. It speckled the ground and splattered on their suit. A concern that our killer had… But not one that they would worry too much about! They could simply return the outfit. Mugen stumbled back and fell against the tree. Sliding down it his jacket is scratched as it pulls against the bark of the oak tree. The agony of his insides being turned to mush left him in a state of shock as the life drained from his dots. His curse stone fell out of his hand. Our killer got back to work one final time, clearing up the loose ends they knew they had.

Taking out Mugen’s phone, our killer slammed their heel into it, multiple times to make sure the job was done and that no one would ever see their exchange and deciding now was the best time to go get their original attire. Making their way back to Freddingtons and changing back into their attire they had left behind, fully believing that their plan had gone perfectly, not once realizing their trail to this store would be tracked soon enough from one mistake.

So what did our killer do after this time? Well, she decided it was time for a cup of coffee! After all, Haru Kamiya didn’t value the life of someone she viewed beneath her, and she had plenty of time to relax! Her plan to curse them all was soon approaching, and the tale of why the slow-killing poison known as pride would soon take another victim was drawing to a close.

Tadhg (tag) gay, didn’t realize he was polyam until he was in a triad, he/him rank ranges from trooper to sergeant, Quartermaster’s assistant Name is pronounced Taig. Horrible romantic, but is startlingly bad at reading other people’s emotions if they aren’t being direct about how they feel. Loves poetry. Deals with anxiety by organizing everything into submission. Got badly burned in an explosion and lost a significant portion of his sense of smell which also lead to his sense of taste being deadened. He tends to compensate by covering food with hot sauce. Has a fearless streak that’s as much self destructive tendencies as it is bravery. Very protective of his best friend, Steady. Get’s bored easily.

Stoker (tag) Aromantic, demisexual uses he/him pronouns out of familiarity if not any actual sense of gender Chief Petty Officer A ship’s technician with a knack for field repairs. He’s more likely to be seen with a tool kit than a gun as he rushes to fix whatever part of the ship got damaged in a fire fight. A blow to the head injured his right eye and left it permanently more dilated than the left. He also gets the occasional migraine which is why he got a daith piercing. He’s a bit socially awkward and would rather deal with mechanical problems than interpersonal ones, but he means well.

Two sides to every story

So....I just saw a repost by a blogger who usually posts sympathetically about Outlander,   about bigotted Ulster Unionists, which came with a slew of comments  about  how dreadful they are, f*cking British colonists, and with even more comments below about  how everything about the English is wrong and how horrid we were and are because of  our history as slavers and genocidal colonials, cultural vandals and ruthless Imperialists  (rich if some of that is coming from American bloggers, but that’s another story)

I try not to get involved in politics on my blog , least of all the god-awful  politics of Northern Ireland, that  benighted but beautiful corner of the Emerald Isle that is torn by ethnic and sectarian conflicts that have been intractable for, what, 400 years? Usually the comments I read on Tumblr about the horrors of the British Empire and how beastly the English have been and STILL ARE, pass me by.  If you are English you get used to being the world’s whipping boy for every real or imagined sin of your slave freeing, democracy promoting Nazi defeating ancestors. No one much liked the Romans, either, the bastards. What did they ever do for us? 

 But in this case I have, as they say, skin in the game.  MY Irish  ancestors were Southern Irish whose family had been in Ireland probably before the Mayflower; I don’t know. They certainly thought of themselves as Irish and sounded Irish, but  their names were not Mcthis or O’that, so I assume they were ‘planted’ at some time. Like 10% of pre-Independence Ireland they were Protestants, and like many they were driven out of Ireland during and after the civil war; their houses burned, their people intimidated or murdered,  their churches now ruins, in a determined bout of Bosnian style ethno-social cleansing that Republian Ireland would much rather forget.

The future of Ireland in the 1920s and the 1930s under de Valera, as I read,  was of a closed, priest ridden society that harked back to a mythical time of agrarian self-sufficiency, a sort of Kim Il Jong ‘juche’ ideology in the Atlantic ocean, an Ireland where regardless of their tradition every school child was forced to learn Irish Gaelic, that indispensible international tool for a largely  Anglophone country.  It was an introverted Ireland which for fifty years seemed largely cut itself off from  the rest of the world, (until Ireland joined the European Union and became a ‘Celtic Tiger’) . An Ireland whose leadership,  in order to spite Britain, declared Ireland  neutral in the struggle against the worst tyranny the world had then ever seen, and whose leader signed a book of condolences at the German Embassy when he learned that Adolf Hitler was dead. As you would. 

Unsurprisingly MY Protestant Irish ancestors felt persecuted and the whole lot fled to the welcoming arms of Australia, back in the 1920s. .  You can learn more about the fate of the Southern Irish protestants in the book ‘Buried Lives, the Protestants of Southern Ireland”, by Robin Bury.

Like I say, there are two sides to every story. You’ve heard and you will  hear a lot about how terrible the English were in Ireland and I’m sure most  of it is all too true. You’ll hear about Cromwell, the massacres of Drogheda and Wexford, the Irish Famine, the absentee landlords, the gallant Fenians of 1798 and the Easter Rising and all. You’ll hear about the struggle for civil rights and about the English boot trampling on the neck of the oppressed peasantry and those gallant IRA boyos fighting to free the six counties from John Bull’s tyranny.

You won’t hear about the Portadown massacres in Ulster,  or the Protestants dragged from their homes and massacred in Cork, or driven into the night with their homes blazing behind them, or the Ulster protestants blown to pieces in Enniskillen on Remembrance Sunday. You wouldn’t understand the siege mentality of a people clinging to their identity against the flood tide of history. 

But then, to be fair, you probably won’t hear about the 50,000 brave Irishmen (some sources put the figure much higher) who volunteered to fight for Britain against Hitler and were shunned by the Irish government on their return, their contribution to the fight against fascism and Naziism ignored by official Ireland until 1995.  

You certainly won’t hear about  the grenade they threw into my grannie’s garden in Dublin, and if you did, I’m sure you could justify it.   They were unionists, after all, even if they didn’t speak with that strange strangulated accent of the Ulster Unionist politicians that we all  find so off-putting, or beat the Lambegh drum and sing ‘The sash my father wore and bait the Taigs every summer. 

But, like I say, there’s two sides to every story.  Now I’ll get off my soap-box and wait for the brick-bats. Filthy English scum that I am.

The numbers stare back at you, unchanging and resolute. There is no point in trying to fight the fate that awaits Amane now, even if the story you know is waiting to be told should speak a different truth.

Eydís shows no remorse or sadness for what is transpiring, instead humming brightly with a jittery sort of thrum to its voice, as though it is buzzing with anticipation…which it probably is.

"How fun! Now, allow me to truly fulfill my role as your Storyteller as I tell you the true tale of what the eyes of the island bore witness to on that night in Strand’s darkened paths, the newest tragedy of Taig! Once, there was a rat whose love brought plague and pestilence…"

It’s late in the evening, but maybe this groundskeeper would argue that it’s early in the night. Elisha emerges from the storage shed by the cemetery, and from the moment he comes into view, he’s a thing in constant motion.

He marks out plots and sets his spade to the earth. There’s a familiarity to his work that quickly makes it plain– he could do this in his sleep. With a surgeon’s ease, he peels back the sod and topsoil. His spade moves swift and certain to cut sharp clean edges into the dirt. The wheelbarrow is his trusty friend.

The scene shifts– one grave becomes twelve, and when he looks grimly satisfied, he sets his shovel in the wheelbarrow and wanders down the road with it. There’s only a short detour to add a volleyball net and fishing line to the pile, before he returns home.

This is where his work becomes more furtive. Elisha moves with an animal's caution, eyes scanning windows for any signs of movement or light before he creeps closer. But the moon has crested its peak and it’s far past any reasonable waking hour– all are asleep.

He hopes it’s a sound and gentle sleep.

With his shovel, he stops just outside the house to dig once again. No clean grave this time– it’s a two foot deep trench and an accompanying molehill. Hiiro might get this far, but it would be just his luck to eat it here, wouldn’t it? He leaves his tools on the side of the path, goes into the house briefly for a garbage bin whose contents he litters over the pit and into the main floor of the house for cover. Then he takes the fishing line and net with him as he slinks back into the house.

The net goes up first. From the banister on the second floor, he climbs into the rafters in the dark, securing the volleyball net from one end to the other. Only two of the corners get a slip knot, so that the whole thing would fall like a vertical wall to impede the stairwell. He’ll need every impediment he can get if Mugen survives and comes to stop him, as Elisha trusts he would.

Then come the tripwires– and not just the one. From side table to chair to shelf, he creeps about the house until he runs out of line.

Still, he doesn’t seem satisfied. Elisha goes back for his wheelbarrow, and props it up against the back door. Then he goes to arm himself– entering the archery range in the yard and taking down a bow, the quivers, and the arrows to fill them. Each holds eight, so… sixteen should do it. Can’t be too careful. No one can be left alive, lest this continue.

After some thought, he grabs a croquet mallet with a smile, and goes back to the house to leave it by the hall. He wonders if Kanon might get to it before he does. He’ll be sure to be here to meet her when she does– she deserves to go down with a fight.

It’s only when he’s loading the fireplace with all the available firewood that a door opens upstairs. Elisha freezes in the dark, heart beating quick like the mouse he is rather than the fox he’s trying to be.

"Who’s… Ah, Elisha? You’re still awake? What are you…"

It’s our culprit. They had been unable to sleep well at night and had called out to him. The fear thaws along with his disappearing rat’s tail, replaced only by sheepishness.

"Euh… well," Elisha hedges, "It was… supposed to be a surprise!"

It would be easy to laugh it off. To act cryptic and let it all go, or to try again later. But he just can’t contain his excitement. They would listen, right? They always did.

"You are preparing a surprise?"

This reminds them of something, and they duck back into their room as Elisha scurries up the staircase none the wiser. When they meet in the hall, Elisha bows his head with the other in a conspiratorial whisper.

"I’m stopping t’e festival."

Surprise? Awe? Curiosity? Elisha peers at the other with scrutiny, trying to discern their feelings. He’s so busy watching their face, he doesn’t notice the teddy bear they tuck into their sleeve. Elisha eventually decides to feel encouraged, pressing on.

"Here, let me show you…!"

Pulling them along by the hand, he tours all his hard work. The net, the trip wires, the weapons, the pitfall, but all of that only if the smoke doesn’t kill them in their sleep… It’s the most painless and surefire way he can think of, Elisha explains. Poison is a horrible way to go, he says, and he would never do that to them.

"I see… So, you have thought about this quite thoroughly. Have you thought about who you would kill first…? How would you try to do it? Should it come to that of course."

"Mugen." The answer comes quick and easy, and he holds up his bow. "I wouldn’t want to make him watch anyone else die. And ideally, I would hit t’em right here–"

He reaches over and traces a finger lightly between the other’s eyes, then from their brow down their nose. His smile is fond.

"–to kill t’em before t’ey even realize. But t’at means bottleneck t’e exit, and getting t’em as t’ey stand up. T’ey’ll probably die scared… it’s not ideal. So I hope a lot of t’em will die from suffocation in t’eir sleep instead. And I have to try to get everyone near all at once, so nobody escapes."

Elisha laments softly as they walk together, all the way back to the cemetery. He pulls his witness to the graves, to show them where they’ll rest in the end. Turning, Elisha clasps both of their hands, gentle and earnest.

"No more curses, no more trials, no more wishing hells. T’at’s how Eydís feeds, no? How it traps us here? So I t’ink– no, I’m certain. If I kill everyone wit’out my curse stone, t’ey’ll at least be free."

There is a spark in his eyes that cannot be extinguished. A sort of sick hope that maybe– just maybe, everything that’s wrong with him can be a good thing. He can save them all, and he’s the only one who can do it.

"It’s too late for Shiloh… and Lacy, and Maria, and Lisa, and t’e ot’ers, but I’m not going to let it do t’at to you or anyone else."

Our culprit feels a twist in their stomach, as if Elisha had already moved to place a knife in their gut. Pin feathers sprout along their arms. That they still remained hidden by the culprit’s long sleeves was their only saving grace.

Elisha was serious. And his eyes– one a deep hungry red, the other a startling teal unobscured by any lens– search our culprit, waiting for them.

There was no time– no luxury of pondering their choices. They glance briefly at Elisha’s bow. They knew how clumsy they were in their animal form. They did not like the risk. Fear…

(It’s when something is afraid that it’s the strongest. Cornered animals are the most dangerous.)

Fear necessitates the choice, but fear does not make it. The choice is made with love. With despair. With conviction. The culprit gives Elisha a gentle, but saddened smile.

"It will be hard. I… I know I would not have the strength to do it myself. But you were very thoughtful with all of this, Elisha. I can tell, you’ve worked so, so hard. So…"

"Would you like me to help you? I’ll stay up all night if I must."

"Help me–?"

It’s still strange and new, to have someone seek to meet his needs without him having to ask– or cry, or yell, or bother, or attack, or cajole. Surprise becomes relief and joy. They don’t think it’s stupid? They’ll carry this weight with him? They aren’t afraid?

"You aren’t afraid?"

He doesn’t wait for an answer. He doesn’t give them the chance to say yes. Elisha is already nodding, lifting the other in both arms and swinging them in a circle.

"Okay. And we can go toget’er, at t’e end."

The condition is met. When he puts them down, he staggers– and he never does regain his balance. The culprit catches him instead, and hugs him tight.

"Ah, careful now… You must be so tired, Elisha. I know it’s been a long day. You stayed up this late for everyone, after all. So, please… Get some rest. I’ll take care of everything. Here…"

The culprit gently lowers themself onto the ground, laying Elisha’s head in their lap as they gently arrange the hair away from his eyes. They gently hush him as they move their hand over Elisha’s hair, carefully concealing where their nails were turning into sharp pointed talons.

"I must’ve… overdone it."

Elisha almost sounds sheepish, words slurring as he struggles to even blink. It’s hard, when the world feels so heavy it almost aches. Despite that, he smiles to himself, enjoying the attention. It may be the very last time, after all.

"I still have to…"

"It’s okay. I’m here. Now sleep… You’ve done enough."

"..."

When they could no longer feel Elisha’s breath nor sense his pulse, they lower him from their lap. 

They knew he needed to be laid to rest. So, while they could still hold onto their emotions, our culprit gathered what soft nearby grasses they could. Elisha is placed in the nearest grave, head resting on a pillow of grass. The bow is taken from his hands, replaced with a teddy bear.

And the culprit takes in the full breadth of what they’ve done: betrayal.

Is it betrayal, if they did this for him? To keep Elisha from becoming a killer? To save everyone's lives? Is it selfish, to be willing to face execution for him and them?

Seeing Elisha’s smiling face and knowing it’s not what he wants, it feels like it must be.

Talons curl tight around the bow, and an owl rises from the cemetery with a mournful cry that both echoes off the cliffs and is swallowed by the waves. It turns on the wind and wings its way back to the house. They still have a promise to fulfill.

I’ll take care of everything.

The moon is setting as they fly low across the yard. Good. Let her close her eyes on this night. The bow clutched in their talons is dropped at the doorstep, and they flutter silently into the door left ajar. 

The culprit has already taken inventory in their head of all that must be done. Fluttering into the high beams where the net is tied up, they attempt to pick free the rope while they still have wings to reach. Not knowing the difference between the knots and only equipped with a beak, they only manage to get the net half free before they’re forced to land.

Then it’s down to the fireplace. the culprit removes the logs, stacking them back neatly where they’re normally stored. They make a round through the house as swift and silent as they can, untying as many tripwires as they can remember or see. They clean footprints– dirt, mostly, tracked in by Elisha– and everything they dismantle goes into the trash.

Oh, the trash. The culprit picks up the strewn about trash inside and out. Exhaustion makes their limbs feel leaden, but despite it all, they work with urgency. Tying their sleeves back, they fill in the pitfall trap with the nearby shovel and wheelbarrow. The sky begins to lighten and the stars begin to fade as morning approaches.

They did say they would work through the entire night if they had to.

They put the dropped bow and the shovel in the wheelbarrow and go to put them away, wiping the handle of the shovel off first before likewise cleaning off their own hands and clothes with a rag.

And then…

… what does one do, while waiting for their death to come?

(They wander back to the cemetery. Elisha is still there. He’s still dead. His body doesn’t look so pale in the grey morning light– he looks as if he’s resting soundly. Amane clambers into the grave Elisha had promised to share, to… what. Apologize? They find they can only fix his hair before the burning at the back of their eyes warns them of tears and feathers to come. The owl flees to the lighthouse.)
