What Does a Community Support Agency Do?
Provide information and assistance to individuals seeking emergency assistance, housing or financial help. Duties include making home visits and accompanying clients to group meetings and community activities. Properly maintaining client and program records is also a must.
These professionals act as liaisons between their clients and local programs that can help them with public assistance, food, shelter, gas utility payments and jobs. They may charge a service fee, or be paid through government funds.
Socialization
Community Support Agency Llc is a mental health clinic located at 44 Dream Avenue in Delco, North Carolina. It offers outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization/day treatment services. It also offers psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. It serves adolescents, adults and seniors / older adults.
Community based programs designed to promote independence, productivity and integration. Operates from a family empowerment philosophy and includes multiple types of social supports mixed with professional interventions. Examples of these services are family support groups, parent training by lay therapists and parent aides, membership in recreational centers and transportation and homemaker services.
Community supports are services provided in accordance with an individual’s individualized plan that maximize their immediate and continued community functioning. Community support staff teach, model and practice skills with persons served in order to help them become successful in the living, working, learning and social environments of their choice. Community support services are often provided for a service fee. Some are available for free.
Education
Education services focus on enabling individuals to become more competent in the living, work, learning and social environments of their choice. Staff teach, model, and practice skills with consumers.
Education Support Services are based on the specific goals documented in each participant’s service plan. These can include, but are not limited to: tutoring and classes to receive a Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) diploma; vocational training or apprenticeship programs; community college, university or any classes to improve knowledge or skills in chosen career; and other general adult educational services.
A broad-based citywide coalition of unions and community groups fought alongside UFT members to preserve free student Metrocards, as well as middle school science labs and community arts programming. Education justice is a core UFT policy. UFT educators also participate in a variety of education initiatives, including the Brooklyn Education Collaborative, the Middle School Initiative and the CC9 Project. Education services also provide family support to address concerns, navigate the school system and connect parents with community resources.
Behavioral Health
A community support agency can help you with your mental health needs. They can provide psychotherapy, medication management and behavioral treatment services. They can also offer socialization and supervision activities. They have a team of highly trained and experienced professionals who can treat young adults, children and adults. They are also able to treat military service members and clients referred by the court/legal system.
These services are time limited based on individual need and are rehabilitative in nature. The goals are to increase self-esteem, a sense of identity and to develop meaningful relationships with others. They can also help with housing, medical and health, education and employment.
Behavioral health services can include Assertive Community Treatment Teams (ACT). These teams consist of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and certified peer support specialists who are available 24/7 to help adult individuals with severe and persistent mental illness live in their homes rather than institutions. They can provide an array of community-based services including medication delivery, homemaker services, and respite services.
Employment
Providing opportunities for individuals to develop and build skills necessary to maintain healthy personal, family and community connections. These services may include teaching and assistance in daily living activities, socialization, recreation, community activities, advocacy and other forms of support.
Oftentimes, community support staff will assist the individuals they serve in navigating their local communities by connecting them with formal recovery supports in order to obtain access to housing, employment and education services. They will also assist in linking to community based activities that are personcentered and designed for people with behavioral health diagnoses.
A Community Support Agency strives to recognize that everyone is a valuable member of society and works to ensure their inclusion and full community participation. They accomplish this through applied research, policy advocacy and training programs for Direct Support Professionals. They also work to elevate the profession by fostering leadership and promoting system reform. Through this, they help to transform the way that society views and values people with disabilities.

Took a break today from the usual in order to reflect more on the new year. To quote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’” Some things I want for 2018 (and I encourage you to share what you’re doing or planning!):
To continue practicing kindness. Anyone can make the world a better place, even if only through small acts of #love. A smile, offering your seat on a crowded subway, lending a hand — positive energy is contagious. For me, practicing kindness also means communicating with integrity, empathy, and grace, and truly listening with presence. All things I want to keep working at.
Speak out. Other than a couple of emails, last year I wasn’t as diligent about contacting my elected officials as I should’ve been. Want to change that this year, and I’ve been re-reading Indivisible.org’s fabulous guide, and keeping up with their blog, to make sure I call in a timely manner in response to the current issues.
To volunteer more. Last year, I did a little bit of volunteering, helping students prepare for the TASC, tutoring English as a second language, helping out with an after-school arts program, spending an afternoon at a soup kitchen. In the past, I’ve also done pro bono illustration work for nonprofit organizations like Harlem Against Violence and Homophobia. This year, I’d love to find another nonprofit where I can volunteer my illustration and design skills… Will be attending an orientation session with the New York Immigration Coalition next week, and will keep you posted on my progress!
Stay energized. I respect that different things motivate each of us — but personally, being upset or anxious only leaves me throwing darts aimlessly, being angry only leaves me feeling drained and resentful. Not that there’s anything wrong with feeling that way, we often can’t control it. And for some, it’s a source of energy. But for me, trying to cultivate hope, calm and confidence that things can and will be better, filling myself with tenacious resolve, surrounding myself with positive people who help nurture that -- that’s what motivates me to take action in all areas of my life. So whatever it is that energizes you, keep it up! You are awesome, and surround yourself with people both offline and online, who bring out the awesome in you. If you’re in NYC, hope to see you at the Women’s March this Saturday 1/20!!

Outstanding Leaders Among Us
If you haven’t heard about them before, let us introduce you to CSU’s Presidential Student Ambassadors (PSA).
From volunteering at prestigious events such as Radiance to meeting with the President's Office Staff and Alumni Affairs representatives, PSAs are some of the key leaders of the larger student body. They excel in their classes, are highly involved and engaged members of their community and embody the values of a true CSU Viking.
Above all else, these students show us that with CSU, opportunity abounds – from student organizations, clubs, volunteering, internships, academics, student employment – whatever you can fit into a semester, can be done with commitment and a lot of hard work.
In a typical year with events on campus, there are as many as 20-35 PSAs. However, this year due to COVID, there are just five PSAs, explained Marty Barnyard, Co-President of The 1964 Society, CSU's only student-alumni association that actively promotes Professional Networking, Philanthropy, and CSU Pride & Traditions.
“Our PSAs adjusted seamlessly to the virtual world,” he said. “This year, they have been volunteering remotely through a Catch-a-Fire service networking site, engaging with students, promoting philanthropic initiatives including our Students Helping Students Bookstore Surprise and CSU Giving Day, and connecting virtually with our university's administration.”
We’d like you meet a few of them...
Sanaiya Ahmed
Junior Biology and Chemistry major Mandel Honors College, COSHP
During the past two years at CSU, Sanaiya Ahmed has immersed herself with the campus community. She has volunteered with organizations like Viking Expeditions, was an orientation leader and a TASC tutor, and worked as a lab research assistant under Dr. Resnick in the Physics Department.
Most recently she became a PSA with The 1964 Society and is part of the executive board of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA).
Even with her impressive list of extracurriculars, Ahmed remains dedicated to her studies. She is part of the Mandel Honors College and was recently accepted into the NEOMED Early Assurance undergraduate program, which gives her a chance to claim a reserved seat in medical school.
“I consider myself very fortunate for all the opportunities I have encountered while being a student at CSU,” she shared. “I strongly believe that anyone can achieve their goals if they put in the effort to do so! I look forward to more great opportunities in the future at CSU!”
David Imre
Senior Biology and Chemistry major Mandel Honors College, COSHP
David Imre says he’s found tremendous joy involving himself with a number of CSU student organizations. At the top of his list: the H.Y.P.E. Team, a peer education group dedicated to improving and maintaining the health and wellness of students and faculty on a variety of issues through education, certifications, events, and trainings.
Student Government Association (SGA) has also been a key experience. As part of SGA, Imre advocated on behalf of The College of Sciences & Health Professions, helping to create a bridge between students and faculty/staff.
“Dean Meredith Bond is such an awesome resource who has so much intellect and advice to offer. It has been a pleasure being able to work with her throughout my tenure as a student senator (and even as a regular student!),” he shared.
Becoming a PSA in The 1964 Society has finally brought together all Imre’s learned from his various leadership roles, and allows him the chance to apply those skills as he represents CSU at events like Radiance and CSU's Distinguished Alumni Awards, he says.
“Being able to network and create connections with so many incredible people in higher administration is very much a privilege to me and I know that the work I do now as a presidential student ambassador (as well as my other positions) and the work ethic that drives me will continue on into my career path as a future physician.”
Kaila Griffin
Graduate MBA student Monte Ahuja College of Business BBA, BCrim, May‘19
Kaila Griffin, an MBA student studying Business Analytics and Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance, knows hard work.
As an undergrad, she interned at the FBI, the Oriana House, the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Courts, and at Northwestern Mutual. She worked for the university startup DrugHelp.Care and is currently an accounting research graduate assistant.
In addition to her plethora of work experiences, Griffin values on and off-campus involvement. She has been a part of the Accounting Association, Alpha Kappa Delta, Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, Institute of Internal Auditors, Institute of Management Accountants, Ohio Society of CPAs, the Sociology and Criminology Club, and the 1964 Society.
From being a new member to taking on leadership roles, Griffin now strives to give back and help incoming students like others had helped her. She enjoys planning information sessions and career events for other students. She volunteers by preparing taxes for low-income individuals with VITA and working at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
Griffin looks forward to graduating in May and hopes to begin her career as a government analyst. But she definitely plans to come back to campus and help students with career readiness and be an active part of the alumni network!
***
Any CSU student interested in becoming a PSA can start by joining The 1964 Society. For more information, visit https://www.csualumni.com/1964society/

Saturday Success Track- Information Sessions
By now there has been some buzz about our new Saturday Success Track. For those that may not be familiar, it is a new BMCC initiative aimed at providing students with the opportunity to take classes on campus one day a week, on Saturdays and earn their degree. The program is designed as a cohort model, starting this Fall 2018 semester, allowing students the ease of guaranteed seats in class, in a supportive and enriching environment.
We are holding Information Sessions for the program, Saturday, July 7, 2018 (12pm-1pm) and Monday July 16, 2018 (5:30pm- 6:30pm). These sessions are also geared toward the adult learner. There are several categories an adult learner student may fit under, some examples are individuals who have an interest in returning to school after an extended period of time out of school, may be a recent High School Equivalency completer (GED/TASC), typically an adult 24+ and juggling varying priorities, a veteran. If you come across prospective students that might have an interest in exploring their options at BMCC, these sessions would be great for them.
I am the primary Admission liaison helping our adult learner students enroll in school. Should you come across any students that fit these categories and are looking to transition into school or find out more information, feel free to reach out to me. Please also find below additional information about the benefits of the Saturday Success Track.
· Earn your Associate Degree on Saturday

6 Innovative Options for Students Who Don't Like Regular School
Editor's note: This is part of a series entitled "Innovative Approaches to Support At-Risk Youth."
Let’s face it. A traditional school approach doesn’t work for every student... and that’s okay. Fortunately, there are options in place for students interested in pursuing alternative pathways. Here are alternative options parents and students can consider.
1) High School Equivalency:
Students who are at least 17 (or 16 with a waiver) are eligible to pursue a high school equivalency diploma better known as the GED and currently renamed the TASC. In most districts students are not on their own. For students pursuing an equivalency there is often help for students prepare to advance to college and pursue career opportunities. Ask if your district has college and career coaches to help students plan for their futures. Some districts may have a workforce development program offering professional training and paid internships. More and more districts are also offering these students opportunities to walk for graduation and attend prom as well. If they don’t have a conversation and see what can be arranged.
While some parents and students consider an equivalency diploma to have a stigma associated with it, others see it as an innovative and efficient ticket allowing students to pursue academic or work passions. It’s also important to remember, that in the modern job market few people place their high school graduation on their LinkedIn resume.
2) Virtual School:
Many states now have virtual learning options available for students such as Nevada Connections Academy. Benefits of such options include that they are available at no cost, they provide a flexible pace and schedule, they can be taking from anywhere in the world. This is a safe option for students who have had issues with face-to-face connections, bullying, or social anxiety. If you don’t have a virtual school in your state, schools such as Florida Virtual accept out-of-state students.
3) Homeschool/Unschool:
Homeschooling is legal in every state. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about homeschooling. If you scratch below the surface you’ll learn some important facts about homeschooling. For instance, there is a high college acceptance rate for homeschoolers. You can receive a high diploma as a homeschooler. You don’t have to have parents or tutors teach you. There are lots of innovative options to learn such as jobs, internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, and more. Those completely new to this idea can enroll in a program like Pacific Sands Academy which will walk parents and students through all the requirements for a high school diploma as well as provide support in developing a personal learning plan.
4) Career & Technical Education School:
Career and technical education (CTE) schools fell out of favor in the age of No Child Left Behind and College for All, but to the relief of many students, teachers, and parents, they are making a comeback. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that not everyone needs to pursue a career requiring college and that there are many honorable, high-salaried careers that don’t require a degree. The best place to pursue such options in New York City which has the largest portfolio of options that train about 60,000 students a year. If you visit a quality CTE school like Co-op Tech as you walk the school halls you will see students and work in fully operational beauty and barber shops, students constructing real buildings, an eyeglass repair store, car repair, and students fixing cars. Students are set up with paid internships and a real shot at a viable career upon completion of the program.
Classrooms at Co-op Tech
5) Drop In Options for Drop Outs:
Many districts have options for students 21 or younger who have dropped out or fallen behind on credits. This varies from state to state and city to city. In places like New York City options include:
A) Young Adult BoroughCenters: These are evening academic programs designed to meet the needs of high school students who might be considering dropping out because they are behind or because they have adult responsibilities that make attending school in the daytime difficult. Students attend part time and in the evening to earn a high school diploma. Students between the ages of 17.5 and 21, who are in their fifth year of high school and have earned at least 17 credits, are eligible.
B) Transfer Schools: These are small, full-time high schools designed to re-engage students. These schools look at the credits a student has and provides a personalized plan for them to complete school providing extra support to help students meet academic and personal goals. Support includes access to workshops, tutoring, Regents prep, and extracurricular activities. Schools support students in developing college and career plans for life after high school. Many Transfer Schools have the added component of Learning to Work, which offer students paid internships, job and career development, and more. Hear more from a student perspective in the following video.
6) Alternative School Models
There are both public (Big Picture, Schoolwide Enrichment) and non-public (Agile, Montessori, Democratic) models that provide passion-based learning options that may be better suited for students. These models generally do away with traditional approaches that include teachers, tests, and textbooks and instead invite students to discover and pursue their passions. This post provides more details and additional information n each model.
Your Turn
What do you think? Are any of these options ones you think could work with students you know? Have you seen any of them in practice? Which ones resonate with you for the type of students you encounter?
