Ficlet requested by @awkwardsauce
Look, I know this ain't a ficlet anymore, the words came out too fast
As Callum soared through the air, his wings cutting through the frigid wind, a sense of clarity washed over him like nothing he had ever known. The weight of the Starscraper’s trial was still heavy on his mind, but amidst the exhaustion and the chill biting at his skin, there was one undeniable certainty—he had found his ‘One Deep Truth.’
Rayla.
It had always been her. Somewhere deep down, he knew. Every step he took, every decision he made since the day they met—it always circled back to her. He could feel it now, as surely as the magic pulsing through his veins. The truth that burned so brightly inside him, lighting the way through all the darkness, was her. She was the light that pulled him back.
Callum’s heart thudded in his chest as his wings beat faster. He knew he was close, and with a few graceful movements, he landed, dropping to one knee. His wings faded, and the wind howled in their absence.
As soon as his boots hit the floor, Rayla was at his side. The feel of her hand steadying him, helping him to stand, filled him with warmth that chased away the cold bite of the mountain air. His fingers moved to his blindfold, slipping it off slowly as his vision returned, and the first thing he saw was her—her eyes meeting his, filled with relief, hope, and a thousand unsaid words.
“I did it,” Callum breathed, still catching his breath. His voice was low, reverent. “I found my one truth.”

i love it when characters are unfair, actually. i love it when they’re uncouth and cranky and hypocritical, i love it when they have cognitive dissonances, i love it when they make good and bad choices for the wrong reasons. i love when they’re short to anger and hard to understand. i love it when they’ve destroyed themselves for nothing but can’t even see either part of it yet. i love it when they’re messy and selfish and bad at communicating. i love it when they get convinced of their own ego and stuck in a feedback loop regarding their own warped paranoia. i love it when characters actively make their lives unknowingly harder for themselves. i love it when characters don’t know they’re in a story. i love it when characters are like real people

i love the way that he is acting like he could not want to be near her less and yet when she touches him, he stares at it, does not move a single muscle and does not pull away until she does, and then holds the spot that she touched. dear god

Okay, so this isn’t really related to the larger parts of the season, but-
Can I just say I absolutely love how they introduced Callum’s dad?
Like, there are so many theories about him, that he was an elf, that he was a warrior who died, that he just up and left them, but in actuality? He was a poet. He was a poet with a sickness from birth and he died from that when Callum was young. He was kind and Sarai loved him. Harrow even respected him and I genuinely love that.
It also makes more sense that it would’ve been harder for Callum to connect with Harrow in the face of that. His dad wasn’t some warrior who died before he knew him, he wasn’t some elf that he never knew, or some deadbeat who left his mom. He was a kind heart poet who was born with a sickness that couldn’t be cured.
That’s extraordinarily tragic, but I love it.

something about how callum’s father had a breathing related/respiratory disease. something about how callum’s first arcanum was the sky arcanum, how his most signature spell is the breathing spell (aspiro). something about how soren had a wheezing/coughing/respiratory disease as a child. something about how soren had possibly the same issues as callum’s father and how Soren is like a brother figure to callum. something about how viren turned to dark magic to save soren. something about how the only two times callum used dark magic it was to save his loved ones. something about the parallels between callum and viren, the two high mages.
