Linger II
Linger I
The mornings by the coast are cold, mists from the sea sweeping over them, soaking through their clothing and waking them before sunrise. With the days getting shorter, there’s no point in dallying, so they wash and eat breakfast quickly, at least another few days' hike ahead of them before they can hopefully get some actual transport.
She’s fiddling with those damn buttons again when he comes looking for her. It’s stupid really. She knows the weird tingling and numbness is worse in the morning, before she’s had time to stretch and get the blood flowing, but it’s like she has to test herself, to see herself fail. Poke and prod at the issue, the little ball of anxiety in the pit of her stomach unable to leave well enough alone.
“Can I help you with that?”
She jumps at the sound of his voice, much closer than she would have thought possible. When did he get so good at sneaking up on people?
Flushing, she looks down at her half open collar, changing hands in an effort to do it. “I can manage.” The angle isn’t good with this hand, but her fingers obey at least.
Despite her words, Callum approaches her anyway, his brow furrowed. He watches her struggle for a moment, then just smiles as he nods ever so slightly at her collar.
She shrugs and drops her hand, feeling herself flush as he steps closer to her and begins buttoning her tunic.
“I read about nerve damage,” he sighs, his eyes fixed on her buttons. “Apparently it can take years for things to go back to normal, but it can still happen long after an injury.”
She feels her pulse race at his words. Not at what he’s saying but at the implication he read about her condition and remembered what he learned. “Really?”
He nods, finishing buttoning but not stepping back. “Uh huh.” Callum smiles at her, wide and unguarded. “You’ll let me help until then?”
She laughs a little bitterly, shrugging. “What if it never goes back to normal?”
He shrugs, reaching for the hand in question and squeezing gently. “Guess I'd just help forever then.”

New Rayllum Fic: The Royal Escort
I've been working on a new Rayllum fic these last 6 months and you can read it on Ao3! Here's the cover art showing a new OC named Caineth, King Harrow, Soren, Rayla, and long-haired Callum. Pairing: Rayllum Rating: Explicit Synopsis: What if Xadia never banished humans to the west? In a world, where Xadia and humans know peace, Moonshadow assassins have taken on a new role, that of a bodyguard to powerful human nobles. In a Moonshadow academy, spirited acolyte Rayla now approaches graduation where she will be paired with a new patron. And she has her eyes already set on one in particular: the handsome Prince Callum of Katolis.
This is a story of court intrigue, regal romance, tragedy, and hidden secrets. Most of all, this is a Rayllum-centric AU. https://archiveofourown.org/works/52151539/chapters/131908519

Callum dipped the rag into the cool water, and gently dotted Rayla’s clammy forehead.
He was instructed to keep a basin by her bed at all times, and to wipe down her skill as much as possible. Earlier, servants had drawn a cool bath in the adjoining washroom - and Master Salerno had specifically instructed them to use it should the elf’s fever spike.
Rayla laid upon the clean sheets, her fiery skin peeking through the pristine white cloth. The rash had spread from her torso onto her limbs, creating sickly blisters that burst with warm liquid. Even as she curled up within the sheets, she shivered from fever.
“The first few hours will be the worst .”
The physician’s words ran through Callum’s brain, over and over again. He refused to leave Rayla’s side as he desperately hoped she was strong enough to pull through.
…Hoped? No. She had to pull through.
They had been through worse.

Water
They had failed…
It was the only thing that kept replaying within Callum. The only thing he could process. Everything they had done up until that point… had all been for nothing.
Claudia had succeeded, the prison was opened- and Aaravos… Aaravos was finally freed and allowed to do anything he wanted.
Amidst the chaos, everyone had been separated- thrown about now that the Startouch was walking free. The last thing Callum had remembered, he was flying.
Flying away…
Trying to escape, but remembering if Rayla had also escaped.
Rayla…
And now the next thing he knew, he had crash landed into a tiny alcove. He didn’t know how far he was from the disarray, but that was the least of his worries right now.
Ezran, Soren, Zym, Rayla…
They were still back there most likely- back there with Claudia and the others…
How could this have happened? Despite their best efforts… they failed…
Callum’s body throbbed, his muscles feeling limp. He’d exerted himself too much trying to stop Claudia, and then trying to get away- the pain was almost unbearable.
Maybe a quick rest… no, no he had to go back.
The people he cared about, he couldn’t just assume they’d gotten away.
What if they were still in trouble?
Fear consumed him, and Callum tried to stand- only to collapse onto his knees, more pain shooting through him. He hissed, a hand holding onto his side- it was no use… he didn’t even have enough energy to stand back up.
He was stuck… trapped with feelings of regret that he couldn’t do it.
Feelings of anger at himself.
And feelings of fear for his loved ones.
Rayla… sources he’d hoped she was all right.
Grunting, Callum tried to move again, only getting a little bit further until having to stop, nearly falling onto the ground. The only sounds he could hear were from the water splashing against the rocks- but each sound he heard gave him bitter reminders of where he’d been in the first place.
He shook his head, not wanting to give up- mustering up more energy to move.
But he only got a few more inches forward before almost collapsing. No matter how much he fought it, he couldn’t do it.
“R-Rayla…” Callum’s voice was shaken, broken- cracking across the space, eyes looking down at the water flowing past him.
All he saw looking back at him was his broken reflection- face littered with cuts and bruises, eyes glassy, and the look of despondence. The more he stared at himself, the more he began to remember. It came back to him in shattered fragments, but each one was of one distinct person.
Rayla…
He remembered the time when he and she had shared a close moment with making flower crowns while they were trekking through Xadia to bring Zym back.
Or the times she’d been there to help him fight back against the fears of being taken control of by Aaravos- her light guiding him out of the path of darkness
Or even the time before they were about to confront Claudia- when she had kissed him… telling him it was for luck, to remind him that she was right next time him- that she wasn’t going anywhere.
That… she would keep him safe.
The water rippled, and Callum realized it was his tears causing it.
He swallowed the lump in his throat, teeth gritting.
Despite his best efforts to assure himself that Rayla would be ok, he couldn’t…
Because he did this…
He failed…

Here's a snippet of an upcoming fic, as a treat!
Lost in his contemplation, Callum was jolted back to the present by the soft touch of Rayla’s hand in his. Her gentle voice broke through the silence, pulling him from his reverie with a tender warmth that enveloped him.
“Hey, love,” she spoke softly, her voice soothing his troubled thoughts.
When he turned to look at her, a breath caught in his throat. Bathed in the ethereal glow of the moonlight, Rayla seemed to radiate an otherworldly beauty. The luminescence softened the contours of her features, casting a gentle halo around her delicate frame. Her eyes, a mesmerizing shade of violet, sparkled with an inner light, reflecting the celestial canopy above.
Her flowing white hair shimmered with a silvery sheen, cascading like a waterfall of moonbeams down her back. The delicate curves of her horns and her markings seemed to dance with a faint glow.
She was… Radiant? Beautiful? Definitely both.
Her laughter, like a melody on the wind, broke the spell. A blush tinged her cheeks as she cast her gaze downward, a coy smile playing at the corners of her lips.
“You know, you could try not to look so lovestruck,” she teased. Callum blinked, feeling a warmth spread across his cheeks as he struggled to compose himself.
“Oh, y-yeah, right—sorry,” he stammered, his words stumbling over one another in his attempt to regain his composure. Rayla’s gaze met his once more, her touch sending a shiver down his spine as her hand found its way to his chest.
“It’s fine,” she reassured him, “I like making you flustered.”
A smile tugged at the corners of Callum’s lips, “I’ve noticed,” he replied, his voice tinged with affection as he savored the warmth of her touch

She’s Alright
Summary: “Are you even paying attention to the mess you're making with your tie?” He heard a familiar voice behind him say, he turned to see his friend, Rayla.
“Ugh, you know I'm not good at these things”
Rayla laughed at his comment. “I know, but you're a prince, so you know, 'these things' are what princes do,” she said as she approached him with a funny but delicate smile on her face. Callum grimaced a little.
"I thought we had already come to the conclusion that I'm terrible at most of the things princes do.”

Summary:
When Callum is gone for too long from Janai and Amaya's wedding Rayla goes looking for him.
Fanfic for the TDP Prism Event 2024. Week 3: Dance.
"Two hours later here she was looking for him. When twenty-four hours before Rayla fantasized about dancing with him, telling him she loved him still and maybe, just maybe, kissing him under the stars. Apparently, none of that would happen"
Describing the dancing scene was more difficult than I thought but still managed to have this in time, so I hope you like it
I love that “Rayla” comes from “ray of light” and I used that here because I needed to share my love for it.

Linger
Her left hand isn’t right, and she wonders if it ever will be. It’s been funny since the binding, obviously, but she’s noticed it’s been worse since Sea Legs.
It’s not all the time but it’s enough that she can’t help but notice.
Worry.
Her strength and athleticism have always been her most valuable traits and if she can’t rely on them, well then, what use is she?
To be fair, this new issue hasn’t really affected her ability to fight. Not yet anyway, but she can’t help but worry that it might let them down at the worst time.
That sort of thing seems to happen to her.
She could be worrying about nothing, of course. It wouldn’t be the first time she let anxiety get the better of her, but she has noticeable difficulty doing the tricky little buttons of her tunic with her left hand... Even later in the day, after they’ve warmed up by the fire and the pins and needles have gone away, there’s this lingering... numbness, this insensitivity, that she just cannot shake.
“Rayla, are you all right?”
She looks up and finds Callum watching her, a concerned look on his face. His black eye and healing cuts are faint, but still visible even in the low light of the dying fire and he’s worried about her…
“I’m fine,” she waves him off, changing hands as she finishes her buttons with her right hand. “Tired, I guess. Long day.”
Callum nods, sitting down beside her. He pauses for a moment, eyes briefly on the others sleeping on the far side of the fire. “It still bothers you?” He nods to her left hand, as he turns to look at her fully.
She’d told him about the lingering pain back before, but she’s surprised he’s noticed anything now. She thought she was being careful to cover any discomfort.
For a moment, she considers lying to him. He doesn’t need this additional concern but, well, trust and that. “Not all the time,” she concedes. “In the morning,” a shrug. “Sometimes when it’s cold.”
He frowns initially, then smiles softly at her as he reaches for the hand in question.
She gives it to him without hesitation, feeling herself relax immediately as he squeezes her fingers gently and rubs his thumbs across her knuckles.
Feeling herself relax, she finds she can push away the weird sensations in her hand, electing instead to concentrate on the feeling of his skin against her own.
He smiles a little wider, squeezing her fingers gently as he moves closer to her. “We better keep it warm then.”
