okay yes you’re being very normal BUT. “what makes you think he was a hero?” “because he kills monsters.” “what makes you think that she was a monster?”
“not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero, and not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster”
“…and against all odds, he managed to find his way to a happy ending”

Another durge/astarion parallel that drives me wild is when astarion confesses “I feel safe with you, seen.”, the concept of being seen being a recurring theme in his romance arc, and after durge denies bhaal he says “despite [the horrors] I only ever saw you.”

Ship dynamics: Like Dionysus and Ariadne, finding love after heartache.
"Distraught, Ariadne was wandering along the shore searching for sight of her lover's ship, when she was surprised by the wine god Bacchus. He had fallen in love with her and asked her to marry him, offering her the sky as a wedding gift, in which one day she would become a constellation." (x)

WILMON AND SAGUST CAN"T BE TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME
Wilmon and Sara x August are FOILS. This might be something that the people have figured out already, but I DID NOT until after watching s3 and I haven't see anyone say it yet so like I'm gonna do it.
I'm sorry this is gonna be a LONG post.
****SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT****
After Sara and August kissed in s3 ep5, I had such a weird feeling. Cuz like Wilmon had just broken up (maybe?) and I had such a "One cannot live while the other survives" moment (I'm sorry for the HP reference). I thought back to s2 and s1 and I had a whole moment cuz they are FOILS, but not even in the way I at first expected!!
Wilhelm and Sara are foils and Simon and August are foils!!!
Evidence:
Season 1:
Wilhelm and Simon meet and are immediately drawn to each other
August start the season, probably not even knowing Sara's name, he has no interest in her
Wilhelm and Simon kiss for the first time after very clear, but hesitant tension, in a very pure, sweet moment
August kisses Sara for the first time because he is jealous of Wilhelm's friendship with Felice
After Erik dies, Wilhelm gets very hot and cold with Simon, he is unsure if he can handle/wants this relationship because of his station, even though it has been good for him. He wants Simon even though he feel like he SHOULDN'T because of his station/duties.
Around this same time, Sara plays with August feelings a bit (she doesn't mean to, this is not her intention, but she does!) She wants him even though she SHOULDN'T because that is her best friend's ex!
Simon rescues Wille from the football field and they get together.
August takes the video. He and Sara are not together
After August posts the video, Wille and Simon's relationship is rocky. They don't know how to handle the pressure Wille ends up making the choice to deny Simon. This leads to them breaking up.
Sara catches August posting the video and confronts him to confirm her knowledge. He asks what she wants in return for her silence, and he makes the choice to help her get into Mummer's house (this is one of the seeds for their relationship in season 2)
Season 2
In the beginning of s2, Wilmon are broken up, with no end to that in sight.
Sara and August on the other hand are not together, but starting to show interest in each other
Felice encourages Wille to continue to pursue Simon!
Sara CANNOT tell Felice about anything happening with August.
Simon starts seeing Marcus to try to rebound from Wille, which makes Wille very insecure.
Sara makes August more sure of himself and their relationship through honset communication of expectations. Especially while they are intimate and vulnerable.
Wille loses hope for his and Simon's relationship right before the Valentine's ball.
August invites Sara to the Valentine's ball, giving him hope that they can be seen together.
Simon kisses Wille at the Valentine's ball, which rekindles Wille's hope for their relaitonship.
Sara stands August up for the Valentine's ball and chooses to go with her friends instead.
While Felice is confirming the sale of Rousseaux, Wille and Simon are in a fight about whether or not Simon should go to the police and what this means for them.
Sara goes to August for comfort when Felice tells her about Rousseaux. (This yields probably their cutest scene)
After their book report, Simon and Wille have sex and commit to getting back together. They also have an important discussion about why Simon wants to go to the police in the first place.
At the same time, Sara tells August that Simon is planning to go to the police and that he needs to go first so he can own up for his mistakes. August has no intention of doing this and, consequently, betrays Sara.
Simon breaks up with Marcus.
August puts his plan to Not Go To Jail into action (which is betraying Sara's trust.)
During The Altercation, both couples try to protect each other, BUT this scene is a catalyst for Simon realizing he is okay with taking what Wille can give him and realizing that he loves Wille.
Conversely, Sara realizes during The Altercation, that August is not the person she thought he was and that she cannot be with him.
Before the jubilee, Simon tells Wille that he loves him, which gives Wille the courage to give his speech and come out to the world/ tell the world he loves Simon.
Before the jubilee, August tries to prove his love for Sara through giving her Rousseaux, which she denies. She leaves and calls the cops from the bus.
Season 3 (eps 1-5)
Simon and Wille are together for most of the season, but they are especially happy in the beginning before the pressure builds.
Sara and August don't even talk or see each other until Ep3.
Simon and Wille communicate honestly, however, they do still have some fights and miscommunication
Sara and August don't communicate for most of the season, but when they do, it is August trying to support Sara and explain his actions
At the end of the season, all of the pressure and grief Wille has experienced comes to a head and Ep5 ends with Simon maybe breaking up with Wille.
Concurrently, August tries to justify his actions to Sara and she kisses him.
I think that, in the last episode, Sara and August are going to break up and Wilmon are going to get back together. This might be the Wilmon endgame truther in me, but I don't think their story is going to finish that way. I also don't think August has had enough character growth to satisfy Sara! I think he has spent so much time asking to be forgiven, that he hasn't really changed. He has proved that he loves her, but I don't know if she loves him enough to sacrifice her family and friends for him.

Warning for Spoilers for KFP4:
In my rewrite of KFP4 (jumping on the band wagon here) Han actually adopted Zhen like a daughter- the entire Den of thieves are actually an adopted family; they had a whole "code" which is basically the exact opposite of everything the Chameleon taught Zhen: stick together, never turn your back on the family.
They used to be relatively successful (as in, they eked out a living and were able to feed themselves and the kids) and avoided clashes with the other gangs and more powerful crime syndicates of the city; until Zhen turned them all in to the Chameleon, and they had to pay tribute to her for her "protection"- the price Zhen had to pay to earn her apprenticeship.
The Den was then forced to move into the gutter to avoid the Chameleon bringing her fist down on them when they became unable to pay her ever-increasing rates; it wasn't personal for Zhen, it's just that she never saw a future there, with them letting their attachment to each other bog them down, while the Chameleon's more self-serving rules seemed to lead to success; however, the Den never forgot, and Han especially never forgave (until later of course- a very emotional, dramatic moment of character development when Zhen sees what she lost with him versus what she now has with the Chameleon- unconditional vs conditional parental love).
Also Han found the bunnies in a basket of fireworks in the market. He just picked them up and never put them down again. He likes to say he stole them.

Teru is so utterly lonely when we meet him! He’s popular; girls fawn over him and he surrounds himself with lackeys and adoring fans but he doesn’t have a single real connection. His parents left and he tells himself that it’s fine, that he can handle it, that he’s just better than everyone else. He takes this huge gaping loneliness and hides it away and plasters over it and pretends it isn’t there.
And even after his first meeting with Mob shatters that, after Teru realizes that he isn’t special or superior, he looks at the boy who tore him down to his foundations and stared into that well of insecurity and said they were the same--and he idolizes him. Because it’s easier. Because it’s safer. Because if Mob is so much better than him then he’s untouchable, then Teru still doesn’t really need to look at all that loneliness inside him. He just finds a different thing to plaster it over with.
(It’s better than it was. He’s helping people. He’s trying to do better. He gets to be around Mob sometimes, and it’s like looking into the sun, but it makes him happy.)
But he won’t reach out. He won’t dare try to build any kind of genuine intimacy, because how could someone so good want anything other than a surface-level relationship with someone like him?
(How could he want anything other than a surface-level relationship? He doesn’t need things to be different. He’s fine. The loneliness inside him twists and wails but he doesn’t look at it.)
And then he comes face to face with ???% and it’s terrifying and it breaks his heart but also it tears that pedestal down. Mob’s not perfect! He never has been!
And finally, Teru is able to reach out to him as an equal. Finally, standing in the rubble of the city, he feels like they’re on the same footing. He sees how alone Mob is in that moment, trapped inside his own rampaging body, and he reaches out, calls out, because he knows how much it hurts. Because they’re friends, and he doesn’t want either of them to be alone.

idk what it is about the way dungeon meshi portrays relationships but it feels so unique to me
i like all of the ships and also want none of them to be canon. it's fun to imagine literally all of them, but it's just as fun to examine the platonic relationships and what they mean
it's so refreshing to see marcille & laios' friendship but i totally get why people ship them. marcille & falin's devotion to each other is amazing to explore in any context. chilchuck & laios, laios & kabru, senshi & chilchuck, even toshiro & falin. literally every character dynamic no matter the romance/lack of it is so interesting to me
it really felt like a breath of fresh air getting into something where the relationships between characters felt both real and substantial the way they are, but also capable of being expanded upon and played with without feeling like they're betraying the main themes/ideas. man i love dungeon meshi

characters: estinien varlineau; io laithe (wol) | pre-relationship word count: 900 note: i'm having a lot of feelings about siblings, accidental family, and the way men love. [divider credit]
Tumblr media
“Have you noticed our little shadow? He's been following us since we left the city.”
Io’s ears shift a degree, but Estinien suspects she doesn’t have to apply much focus to pick out the clumsy footsteps in the brush. She grins, eyes trained forward so she doesn’t disturb their company.
“And here I was thinking you'd taken the long way round for my benefit,” she says, and his skin tingles with the shy mischief in her voice.
He turns to her, strafing sideways, then walking backward down the well-worn path that slithers beneath the canopy. He takes stock of both his companions. The boy–in shaggy hair and tattered clothes, creeping through tangled plants several feet behind them–still thinks he’s unseen. And Io–in the dappled green light, she is more beautiful than the image he’s kept in his mind these past months, and looking far more healthy–is only teasing him
Are they back here? In the place they can laugh together, or make jokes that almost touch the heart of the thing that goes unspoken between them?
Noted.
“Two birds and all that.”
That makes her eyes widen, and makes her smile. Estinien is unable to resist joining her, even if he has to look away.
He continues, “I am worried for him, though. One needn’t have a scholar’s wit to see that the merchant has the boy leashed. He’s being used.”
Her ear twitches again when their follower snaps a branch, but they are careful not to give him away.
“You do this often, you know?”
“Hm?”
“You have a knack for finding wayward souls. Little lambs.” Her laugh is a familiar melody, quiet but uncouth. Something he didn’t realize he missed. “It’s like you call to them, or they to you… Like you can’t help but care for them.”
“Hm.” He returns to her side, an arm’s length away. Both too close and too far.
Estinien thinks of his brother, as he often does. A little thing, wiry but tough. He liked to chase the sheep to try to rile them up, to rile Estinien up when it was his watch, but they would simply follow him, as sheep are wont to do. It wasn’t long before he’d made friends of the entire flock and took as much pride in their care as Estinien had. Even with so few years between them, their parents trusted Hamignant to watch over the flock, and Estinien to watch over Hamignant.
He thinks of the first time he saw Alphinaud. Never mind the ghost he saw in the lad’s face… there was something else there. He was lonely and lost, carrying the weight of a sin he could not have predicted. A haunting, and a mirror. In the end, he became a source of inspiration, though it took him far too long to realize it.
Vrtra and Aymeric, too. As alone when he met them as he has been at one point in his life or another. Wanting for company, for connection. Wanting to be chosen based on fondness and merit. Wishing for family.
Lost lambs…
Hamignant’s name hasn’t left his mouth in years.
He wonders if Io would care to learn about him. She is a shepherd too, of a kind. He thinks they might’ve liked each other, or that he would have found a way to make her laugh if nothing else.
“Hami…” he begins. The pause lasts too long. Maybe this is stupid. Why dig up the past when he is only so recently able to see a future?
Io smiles patiently.
“Your brother?”
His eyes fall to the leaf-covered ground and he nods. “He would walk our sheep into the fold from pasture. He named them all. Even if they already had one, he’d change them to something he liked better–insufferable, really. Anyway… when one went missing, he’d beg me to join him in the search, make me scour the fields and nearby forest with him until we found whichever young, or old, or lame sheep had wandered off alone, staring up at us with that look of relief. And I was a bit bigger than him, so I would carry it home while he doted on Flopsy, or Custard, or whatever the fuck he’d named them–” he feels his smile spreading as he shakes his head, and the vacuum in his heart surrounding Hamignant shrinks, just a little. “I suppose what I mean is, he still holds me accountable.”
They walk on in silence–Io looking faraway and wistful, and himself feeling lighter having breathed life into the memory–until the trees spread out and give way to the Perfumed Rise. A mile away, the jewel-green sea meets the pink shore, but the wind carries its roar up the hill.
Io’s steps bring her closer. Out of interest in his story, perhaps. “What will you do with this lamb, then? I presume he intends to follow us to Akyaali… We can’t expect him to find his way back to the city alone.”
Estinien sighs. He already knows how this will play out.
You see, being a brother is much like being a shepherd: watch the horizon for danger, be willing to fight it off, carry home the lost and the hurt. The roles are inseparable for him, because he learned them at the same time, with the same person.
“Focus on convincing Matsya to put in a good word with the locals for our boat. Leave the boy to me.”

ill make a longer post at another point but I think the character design in good omens is just so good. the main thing that is stuck in my mind is how simplistic the archangel's outfits are. at most they have like, something over their shirt. but then aziraphale is out here with his gay ass twenty-something layers, which is closer to the layering of hell. of course he is also always somewhat behind the times or standing out, like the outfits that demons wear (which can be seen with shax's battle outfit- or that's what comes to mind). crowley's eyes mirroring the gold that all of the archangel's wear. the way that crowley and aziraphale both manage to both be slightly too overdressed for everything. the clean-ness (? not simplicity but close) of all of crowley's outfits that mimics the simplicity of the archangels, or at least is very different from the chaos of every other demon's outfit. anyways. they make me sick.
