Headcanon that Ruby can talk to animals

It's a bit after ITA when Ruby is in some boring meeting

when she sees a squirrel outside the window

and she's so sick of only being in peoples minds

so she's like ' I wonder what it's like to be a squirrel with no thoughts'

then she's like ' wait I COULD know'

chubs is in the meeting with her and he looks over to Ruby staring intently out the window at some random tree and texts Liam that she's going through it again

' Ruby is most definitely having a psychotic breakdown fix it'

Liam walks into a room later that day to see Ruby opening the Window and letting birds fly in because they honestly just want to chat with her

she gives such good advice to birds tbh

he calls her different Disney princesses all the time

' hey Snow White, I love you so very much'

' good morning sleeping beauty'

' Darin there's a mouse downstairs could you tell it to... not be down there anymore'

she went into a spiders mind once and she honestly has a soft spot for them now

like they're just little guys walking around

Nico goes to squash a spider and Ruby gives him ( and the surrounding kiddos) a long lecture about how just because a spider is small doesn't mean it needs to be killed and it deserves kindness as much as anyone

no one will dare kill a bug in fear Ruby will look at them disappointedly or yell at them

Zu has once said ' oh you want to be mean to me? My friend controls SPIDERS, suck on that, bi-'

her parents consistently walk into their house and find raccoons and deer everywhere

I recently rewatched #thedarkestminds movie and decided it was time I found what really happened. I’ve been slowly making my way through #thedarkestmindstrilogy plus the #book of short stories that came in between and after the trilogy. All of these books including the short stories kept me up well into the early morning hours each night. Overall I loved the series, though there were parts where Ruby was seriously frustrating, but then I had to remind myself how old she was when she was locked away, the abuse she suffered while there and the loss of her family and many more along the way. I just got so caught up in it. I just wanted her to catch a break. So rereading The Darkest Minds for the who-knows-how-manyeth-time and I'm at the scene when they're at East River and Zu introduces the Betty gang to her cousin Hina.

Liam & Ruby ask if she's a yellow too and she responds "I'm a Green, duh!" Whist pointing to her hair.

Why is that meant to be obvious? Zu says her hair was cut because she had lice - nothing to do with being a yellow.

Anyone know?

Road Trip (pt.2)

After driving all day (multiple tourist spots and gas stations) it’s starting to get dark, so Ruby tells Roman to pull over

Liam is horrified- “what’s wrong with driving in the dark darlin’?”

“We’re in the middle of nowhere and have no clue where we are.”

There’s three pullout beds, plus the seats...

Ruby and Liam take one 

“My back is killing me.” Liam complains which makes Zu crack up and tease him about being an ‘old man’

Vida and Chubs take another (just because they need to relax after a stressful week at work)

That leaves one

Zu and Priya round two (Zu diving for the bed and Priyanka grabbing her ankles and pulling her onto the floor, Zu dragging her down with her and getting an elbow to the face.) 

Roman having to separate the two of them by hauling Zu up by the waist

Lana sighing as she holds a cold bottle of water to Priyanka’s jaw (Zu got a few kicks in there)

Max picking a number between 1-10

“2!”

“5!”

Zu being so gleeful when she gets the bed

Roman sharing awkwardly with her

The whispered “hands to yourself buddy!” From Liam 

Priyanka’s muffled snoring

“And you came to that conclusion how, exactly?” Chubs stared at Liam, pushing the stupid new glasses up. “Based on the fact that she let you into the van instead of locking you out?”

  “Exactly,” he replied. “I seem to recall someone trying to vote her out.”

“Yeah!” Ruby said. “Thanks a lot. Trying to dump me off on some random road...”

“Excuse me for trying to look out for the group!” Chubs huffed.

The Asian girl looks back at her notebook, silent and quiet as always. They all seem to lick her head like a useless puppy. She doesn't even try to say anything.

They must have done something bad to her, I want to think, but everything goes back to darkness.

We left him there. We forgot him there. I left him there. I forgot. SHE FORGOT. He didn't like the dark. She is forgetting him. It's like he doesn't even exist for them. She didn't even talk to me about it. SHE CHANGED HIM. They changed him. She changed him. I will never change him. I will never change Jude in my life. She continues to smile while I had to tell Cate.

And there she is, Ruby, smiling as if he never existed. She didn't even care to notice that I'm wearing the rest of the compass as a bracelet. She really forgot that detail. The detail that confirmed that.

I feel my muscles twist with the small noise rising in my ears. I don't want to freak out, but out of the corner of my eye I see my fork, still with pasta, starting to shake. I'm at my limit. And even my crazy blue powers know that, they know that I'm losing myself.

That silence.

I hate that silence.

Welcome everyone, to the Underrated Fandom Club.

This, quite simply, is a place to talk about underrated fandoms. Admittedly, this will mostly be for books. As a reader myself, I'm in quite a few and am constantly hunting for more. I'd also like to make some more book-reading friends, so please do leave your opinions in the comments.

This month, I'd like to recognise two series:

The Darkest Minds, by Alexandra Bracken

Three Dark Crowns, by Kendare Blake

Both young adult novel series are packed full of action centred moments, beautiful and complex ships, fantastically interesting characters, and some of the best plot twists I've seen in a while.

Context:

The Darkest Minds, a sci-fi whirlwind better known for its unfortunate movie adaptation, follows American teenagers as they avoid the government, bounty hunters, and grown ups they've known all their lives. The main characters build themselves similar to how any real young adult would, and Bracken clearly worked smart and hard to allow us all to empathize with at least one person. The world itself is immersive even at its most apocalyptic times: as the west coast falls apart, concentration camps are created for the countries children, and underground groups plan coos to free them. Including side stories in the mix, it was hard to leave the books alone.

Three Dark Crowns similarly follows a few teenagers, however this fantasy naturally involves far more magical and theological concepts. A multi-POV series, these books reside within the lives of three could be queens; each with a special ability and raised to kill the others. I think the only other series I've read with this many twists is Michael Grant's Gone series, and that's saying something considering it's a significantly shorter plot. With characters that grow and break before your mind's eye and an isolated civilization (with a map) that's easy to get lost in, it's fantastic, captivating and thrilling to read.

Three Dark Crowns: Luke, Katharine, Arsinoe, and Will/Junior.

Favourite Moments (SPOILERS):

The Darkest Minds: Sad, but honestly, Cole was my favourite character in this series so I enjoyed every moment I got to read him. My favourite, favourite scene was he and Ruby in the closet in the final book, however, also in the final book I enjoyed the moment in the bus, riding back from getting the Senator's daughter. I loved Cole and Ruby's teasing brother-sister relationship and anytime they were emotional and truthful with each other were my favourite scenes, no matter how gut wrenching. And in terms of the bus ride, I like the cute, proud feeling that radiates through it.

Three Dark Crowns: Admittedly I've only read the first book as of now, so I'll update this later on, but, my favourite moment currently is tied between Katharine's reappearance and Will bowing to Arsinoe at Beltane. There's very few times when I feel that a character is truly powerful, and Katharine's last line does that for me. Same with Arsinoe on her podium, watching the suitors arrive. I love that Will did that and the image of Arsinoe standing up there with a badass mask and being the only one in even minorly masculine clothing does that same thing.

What's the longest drive you've ever been on? For me, it's a tie between 2 different roadtrips. Once I drove from Arizona to Tennessee which was about 27 hours total and more recently I drove from South Dakota back home to Knoxville which took around 24 hours! . . I dont mind long trips like this and sometimes prefer them to the hustle and bustle of a long day in an airport (only sometimes though 😂) I think I often romanticize these trips because some of my favorite books, like the darkest minds and on the road, are centered around being in a car for long periods of time.
