Keeping up with practice in learning George morikawa's works, today I tried to replicate one panel from the hawk vs takamura fight (my fave fight in the entire manga)

Panel used for reference

I'm starting to catch on to how he builds faces and uses hatching to shade areas like takamura's neck but also for things such as his chest and abdomen to give depth without using defined line work as to not take away attention from things such as the face.

Hajime no Ippo: What if
(What if Makunouchi Ippo never got into boxing?)
I think we wouldn’t have a manga. Good night.
(Of course that’s the obvious, but how would the world be different around Ippo)
-For the sake of this, Takamura helping Ippo that one time didn’t stick with Ippo like it did that inspired him to become a boxer, simply leaving when he got the chance.
- he would have been bullied till high school. He would have endured it and then after graduating took over the family business full time. Maybe his high school teacher told him to go to university. With Ippo being how he is, it’s basically a given.
-Umezawa would not have become a mangaka and continued as a delinquent not inspired by Ippo’s change to pursue his dream.
-Miyata would have never left the Kamogawa gym, since he would have had no reason to leave. He might not be as driven as in canon, but he’d still have Genji’s guidance as well, so I imagine Miyata would still be as good a boxer by the time the Rookie king tournament came around.
-Takamura is still Takamura, he would still be his usual self and still be a champion. That’s just how Takamura was built. (You could argue he might have lost to Bryan hawk but u doubt it. Ippo only really gave moral support)
-Aoki and Kimura may have not improved as much without seeing Ippo’s success. But that’s debatable. I think their boxing performances would be the same.
-Now let’s talk about how different the Rookie king tournament would have been.
-I imagine in place of Ippo it would have been Yūsuke Oda that had his spot. But Oda would have lost to Jason.
-Jason and Kenta would have had an interesting match, but I think Kenta would have won that. As unlike with Ippo, wouldn’t have been driven to turn it into a punching match.
-The real fight would have been Kenta vs Ryūichi. As Ryūichi was one of the favored to win the tournament, like Mashiba and Miyata. Kenta did beat Ryūichi in their jr. Lightweight title match, but Ryūichi didn’t suffer from Glass jaw back then. I think in this match, Ryūichi would be the winner. Thus having him be in the finals.
-now in the manga, Miyata lost to Mashiba because he pulled a dirty move allowing him to win because Miyata was so dominant (training to beat Ippo). I think without Ippo as the motivator, Miyata would not be as Dominant as he was at the start. I think the fight would be more back and forth.
-With Mashiba still winning because I think he would still pull a dirty move. But Miyata now wants payback against him.
-Now that leaves Ryūichi vs Mashiba. And I think Mashiba takes it, no tricks. Probably humiliates Ryūichi in the process. Making Mashiba the East Rookie king.
-Sendō is still the west Rookie king and thus he gets to fight Mashiba.
-Sendo likely looked up the videos around Mashiba and got pissed, seeing as the dirty move he pulled on that one boxer (probably getting Sawamura vibes) and decides he will teach this guy a lesson.
-Sendō being the dominant force he is, crushes Mashiba. Becoming the All Rookie king.
-now Sendō not having Ippo as his strong opponent to “stick to” left him more hungry.
-Miyata, not having a reason to accelerate his progress, decides to focus on winning matches. And his target becomes Date.
-Miyata likely would have been the one fighting the opponents and one or two more, likely to get to just below Ippo’s rank.
-I picture him getting to the Class A tournament, where Sendo would be. Sendo basically being on a rampage looking for his strong opponent.
-And people still afraid of Date, might not have wanted to compete.
-I think Sendo probably would be Ippo’s rank thus the line up would have Sendo fighting Saeki in the tournament. The speed star would lose. But it would have been a decent fight.
-Miyata would have taken the spot of the boxer that fought Volg in the class A tournament. Now the question is, would Miyata have beaten Volg?
-The answer. I think at this time, Volg would have lost Barely. Because Volg wasn’t fighting in his true style. It is likely the hardest Miyata had been pushed up to that point.
-Sendo would be fighting Miyata. And That would be the true fight. Sendo would remember how the guy got cheated in his rookie king tournament. And would assure him he won’t be holding back.
-Miyata would be the perfect counter to Sendo. And without that loss to Ippo, Sendo would have lost.
-Allowing for the Date vs Miyata fight.
-Date would have won, but that’s just cause the skill level of Date was beyond Miyata’s. I’d put it on the level of Date vs Ippo, but with two less rounds. Miyata wasn’t ready for Date.
-Date would probably leave to the world after that, not feeling that there was anything left in Japan.
-Sendo vs Volg would occur and I think with the shift of fate, Volg would win. As Sendo wouldn’t have been at his level without the loss from Ippo earlier on motivating him. So even the judge couldn’t give it to Sendo. Thus Volg would be the Featherweight champ. And that money would be sent to his mother. Likely saving her life.

Top 5 ippo fights?
hehe, the last time i received this ask was 3 years ago :') and i answered it, but now i am a different person, old, crusty and deranged. It's also very lovely timing to ask that, because for the last YEAR me and my best friend in the whole world Nihinski are re-reading Ippo manga 3 chapters per day, and talking mad smack and memes all about it (hence my shitpost tag #ippo reread club) and I can reexperience it all with new perspective, and find underrated gems I never truly appreciated. and of course, vice versa
originally my fav 5 fights are Chaos, Lallapalooza, world champion Volg, Sendo vs Shigeta and Ippo vs Date. none of them are overrated really, I guess Chaos is, but it is also
p̸̪̗̪͍͓͗̐̑͐e̴̞̪̐̚ä̵͙̗́k̵̢̤̫̱̝̤͑̒̆̀̈́̔̄ ̴̛͙̺̲̹̒͊̋a̷̢̫̾̑̈́͋̾͆̕ẽ̸̟͎̾̈̓̑̍̓͘s̸̡͔͇̱̤͉͕̔͐ͅt̷̡͇͉̟͕̼͔̘̿̅̍͝h̴͈͐ẽ̴̡͉̩͇͇̰̳̃t̵̼͖̳̣̮̔͑̏ḯ̶̭͖̎̓ͅc̶͇̠̜̎̅̐̊͜͜͝ ̴̜͗͊̌́̑̓̕͝e̶̙͉̗̞͑̍̔͛͐̈́d̸̟̋̀̈́̔̉̍̅̀g̶̠͊̉̀̄̉ë̶̤̳͓̻l̵̹̬͓͇͍͑͆̀̿̕͠ơ̷͎̙̜̌̓̅̊̈́̆r̵͍̼̰̲̮̈́̒͆͌͘̕͝d̴̢͍̟͙̮̗̭͊̉ ̵̢̰̻̲͈̗͓͖̓̿́̄̈͠p̶̢̳͔͇̳̠͛͛̈̓͂̈̆̓e̷͔̽͋͗ŗ̴̛̰̞͐̿̑̅̎͠f̶̺͚̅̋̚o̶͇̎͠r̸͙̝͊͠m̶̡̢̥̮̪̝̳̤͂́͊̄̚ȁ̷͎͇̮̫̗n̶͎̹̟̼͂̈́̾͝c̴͓̘̼͉͈̓͋̽͂ę̸̼̰̩̯̂̌ͅͅ.
Volg's fight is SO SO GOOD, it literally is character journey cathartic completion fight, this is the dramatic Ippo fight of surviving against all odds done RIGHT
never 4get
so now i will do top 5 severely underrated AMAZING fights i never fully appreciated before
1. Aoki vs Imae aka absolute himbo showdown of two absolutely best boys, gave comedy, gave heart, gave life lessons, gave EVERYTHING literally the best fucking fight in the whole entire series
2. Ippo vs sigma male Alf motherfucking Ganjalez - i was dreading to reread this because i though it's gonna last 2 months but it was a) way way way shorter than expected b) the mood was fantastic, it was a proper wild ride to a foreshadowed great disasterina c) alf literally broke down my door came into my house and snatched my wig clean off and now i simp for his sigma ass
3. Itagaki vs Imai take 1 and take 2 - quick and dynamic, two actually unexpected and unusual outcomes, fantastic goofy drama and rival storyline between these two. RIDICULOUSLY UNDERRATED BY BOTH READERS AND THE AUTHOR. oh my god ..... the mistreatment these two receive, i cannot deal with it
4. Ippo vs Take Keiichi - ok listen the way when i was rereading i was like 'who the fuck is take keiichi' and then it shockingly turned out one of the most interesting and sad quick fights in ippo, where the roles of 'who is the real underdog' are completely flipped and all you see is a crafty old man desperately trying to find all tricks in his sleeve, to do something against most talented boy made of pure muscle with monster penis who hits like five trucks
5. Takamura vs Bryan Hawk - probably not underrated by most but I never really favored this one, when genuinely.. it is Takamura's best fight imo, the bloody mad showdown between two WWE heels *nicki minaj aggressively blasts in the background*

My favorite anime fights
13- Infernape vs Electivire (Pokémon):
The nostalgia factor is present to position itself on the list, I still remember the first time I saw this fight, I was sitting in front of the television having lunch while watching Ash's infernape showing Paul who is in charge. It is ironic that the pokemon you abandoned took you out of the league GG.
12- Spike vs Vicious (Cowboy bebop):
I love Spike's final fight, because I think it was a fight where he was able to redeem himself, for him it means a lot to be able to free himself from those ties that tormented him for so long, ending with that "Bang". It is one of those moments in which you connect so much with the character that you come to feel the same him. The simple fact he has found peace with death was really sad
11- Odasaku vs Gide (Bungou stray dogs):
Two men with equal powers, one is the head of an entire organization, and the other is in the lowest part of the mafia. A man looking for a place to die, and another man looking for revenge for losing what was most important to him. That is the fight between Odasaku and Gide.
10- Takemichi vs Kisaki (Tokyo revengers)
The battle between determination and intelligence, in which all feelings of hatred are mutually expelled by them. After so many defeats, Takemichi finally managed to defeat his greatest enemy in a bare-knuckle duel.

9- Takamura vs Hawk (Hajime no Ippo)
Without a doubt, Takamura's rage in his battle against Hawk is THE BEST THING THAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE. A battle where he is unconscious and blinded by the shock of his feelings and emotions, he brings out all his gifts, thus managing to give the arrogant Hawk the beating of his life, because guys, what is an eagle next to a monster?
8- Luffy vs Katakuri (One piece): In the manga, the fight seemed wonderful to me, and also in the anime, surely more than one has become a fan of Katakuri after seeing the result of the fight (including myself), even though Katakuri literally destroyed Luffy with his fists, latter had the new version of Gear fourth hidden under the sleeve, which turns out to be fast and powerful enough to beat the donut-loving commander, the animation is pretty good and relatively faithful to the manga. And speaking a little more about Katakuri ... What hasn't said about this man?.
7- All might vs All for one (Boku no hero academia): Of the entire series, this has been my favorite so far, the end of an age with the fall of All Might, but also the birth of a new age darker than the previous one, adding this to the incredible animation by Studio Bones. , the amazing soundtrack, and above all, a discourse and a plot importance with such a dramatic level, make it one of the fights have most moved me.
6- Gintoki vs Jirocho (Gintama)
https://dai.ly/x7u7oot A conflict between two people who had promised basically the same thing to a single man, but who, on the contrary, had taken different paths. Gintoki's rage against Jirocho has become my favorite, seeing Gintoki silent in the middle of the rain with his broken feelings for seeing Otose leave, that woman who although she was the annoying old woman who had to protect to pay her debts, in the end it turned out to be much more than that, she was part of his family, and seeing her lying next to her husband's grave makes Gintoki explode causing my favorite rage in the anime so far.
5- Reg vs Bondrewd (Made in abyss) This battle could be defined with the word "Cruel", it is only three children was fighting against a monster with infinity of attack relics and with the power to change bodies were using his Soul-Slave Machine, all the effort put in by Reg only for "in the end" they cannot rescue the person they were fighting for, this fight accompanied by the excellent drawings of Akihito Tsukushi make it a visual delight for the viewer. I'm waiting to see her animated.
Edit: I have seen it :3
4- Roy Mustang vs Envy (Fullmetal alchemist): The anime is not afraid of being graphic and raw, having Envy lying on the ground screaming in pain when he burned alive, mixed with Mustang's feelings of anger and rage, they make the fight spectacular along with the wonderful work done by the seiyuus and the studio. Bones GOD level animation (although this confrontation is more of an execution).
3- Gon vs Neferpitou (Hunter x Hunter):
https://dai.ly/x7u7p7n As Netero said: "Do not underestimate the human potential to do evil", it only takes a catalyst for a being to compose himself and allow himself to be consumed by its shadow. In this fight Gon leaves his humanity aside and turns into a monster only to destroyed his enemy, with a spectacular transformation scene with a brutal soundtrack. Throughout the fight we see Gon was destroying Neferpitou with fists to the point that he even uses his own amputated arm to pierce her chest with a blow, and later, finish destroying she next to the whole mountain where they were fighting, simply masterful. The arch of the chimera ants, where the monsters had humanity and the humans became monsters.
2- Luffy vs Doflamingo (One piece): It was because of this fight that I started to watch One Piece, by accident I saw a scene on YouTube and that is why I really wanted to see the anime. After finishing seeing the Dressrosa arc, Doflamingo became my favorite antagonist in the anime, his past and personality caught me. For me Doflamingo is a representation of human madness and all the anger and resentment in the world. The battle of Luffy vs Doflamingo is extremely symbolic, practically we see the future of One piece, to Luffy destroyed the threads that create a fragile reality of happiness, showing the darkness behind the light, and Luffy was sending from heaven to earth to a heavenly dragon.
1- Gintoki vs Takasugi (Gintama):
https://dai.ly/x7u7p1d One of the most anticipated fights (Or the most anticipated) by all Gintama fans. We are presented with the dilemma that Gintoki had in his past, a promise with two different people, two things that he wanted to protect, but if he didn't get rid of either one, he wished end up losing everything, it is a fight without power ups taken from the sleeve, without the power of friendship involved, only two men fighting to face their past, the blood, the quick animation, the excellent work done by the seiyuus, without a doubt some gintama knows how to give very good action scenes , and in this case they knew how to perfectly capture each feeling with each fist and each clash of swords, I also love the fact that both Jirocho and Takasugi saw in Gintoki the ghost of their past, without a doubt one of the best sword fights in the anime.

Thinking about that part in the Takamura VS Eagle fight in which Takamura has a deep cut and is about to be disqualified from the fight, so Kamogawa says that “even if it costs me my life I will stop it” because he’s desperate and feels useless being unable to actually stop it. Takamura gets so fucking scared at the moment that his adrenaline kicks in and stops the bleeding and then process to tell Kamogawa to chill and relax.
Just a moment of “Oh shit calm down dad I can do this don’t worry, take deep breaths I’m taking the belt right now”.
And in his fight against Hawk, Takamura remembering how Hawk hurt Kamogawa is also what makes Takamura snap and beat the ever loving shit out of him.
Takamura is usually a mess as a person but he’s really good when his main motivator of wanting to make Kamogawa feel proud of him shows up, the person pretty much raised him into the who he is today and he owns so much to.
It’s also good how Kamogawa feels useless in the world championship fights due to his lack of technical skill and experience, but in both ocassions he’s a big part of what pushes Takamura to win.

Random question but what is some of the most tense moments you’ve seen in any series.
Alright, I’m rewriting this response because I hated the last one. This is a rather vague question, but an interesting one nonetheless. In terms of tense moments I’ve SEEN rather than experienced, there’s a few off the top of my head:
Honestly, the entire Grateful Dead/Beach Boys fight in Jojo Part 5 had me on edge the entire time because despite knowing that Passione would win, I didn’t know when and how, and each side kept pulling out more and more tricks that just got crazier and crazier.
Takamura vs Bryan Hawk from Hajime No Ippo. Like the last one, this one went back and forth so fucking often, and unlike the last one, I legitimately did not know who would win. It went down to the wire, and I loved every moment of it from start to finish. Takamura just has AMAZING fights in general.
Toys in the Attic and Brain Scratch from Cowboy Bebop were fucking excellent episodes that were loaded with tension and really, really weird shit going on that explained enough to make sense, but held back enough to still keep that tension. It was fucking fantastic.
Sonic escaping from the exploding capsule in SA2. Not much now, but as a kid that shit was SUPER fucking tense. Hell, the cutscene before it was tense as hell too.
The entire final sequence of Pokemon Black and White got my blood fucking pumping in the best way. Team Plasma’s castle rising from the ground, crossing that bridge, the gym leaders confronting the Seven Sages, the back to back fights with N and Ghestis, it was just nonstop fucking HYPE and the fights themselves were super close too, it was amazing.
The introduction of Cell in DBZ. What a fucking way to introduce a villain.
I don’t have many great things to say about the ST, but I have to say, that sequence at the end of Rogue One where Vader just cuts through all those troopers in the hallway was tense as hell the first time.
On a similar note, the first fight between Vader and Luke in Empire Strikes Back is also a great fight with a lot of really good tension behind it.
The fucking Apathy in RWBY Volume 6 were just nerve-wracking in their own right, especially towards the end of that mini-arc holy shit. I remember all the theories and ideas and predictions floating around and it was great.
Kars achieving his ultimate form in Jojo Part 2 was the perfect combination of awe-inspiring, terrifying, and tension-inducing and I loved every second of it. It helps that his theme, Avalon, perfectly communicated how royally fucked everyone was.
The Stain fight in MHA was an incredible combination of hype and nerve-wracking.
This is more an “experienced” than “seen”, but the fucking Warthog sequence at the end of Halo 3 deserves a mention for being that fucking amazing. Do that shit in co-op after spending hours and hours getting to that point and it is a fucking sublime experience full of yelling, clenched teeth, and at the end, fucking cheering. That’s how you end a fucking video game.
The entire Mogami sequence in Mob Psycho Season 2. Go watch it.
Also in the same vein as more an experience than anything, the fucking SAX in Metroid Fusion jesus shit.
Those are the ones off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s some I’m forgetting, hope you’re satisfied with THIS answer.

Factoide #4104
