“Tala Tannam” by Mdou Moctar

MG:

What makes “Tala Tannam” such a warm, familiar song is Mdou Moctar’s guitar, the way you can hear his fingertips moving along the strings. It’s intimate and alive, and the surrounding instruments crackle and burn, giving the song a sort-of sunlit, campfire sound. With the choral-style vocals woven throughout, “Tala Tannam” evokes a live recording of a communal jam session – and it pretty much was that, recorded on the road between stops on tour. I was starting to feel like I’d managed to weasel an unusual amount of guitar music past DV this year when I realized that, no, I’d just found much better guitar music this year. Moctar’s playing is earthy and verdant, both, and it shines in a naturalist setting.

To my great dismay I’ve softened significantly on guitars, bit by bit and then all at once (Charly Bliss was the final straw.) But it’s also true that both MG and I heard an unusual amount of fantastic guitar music this year, and I’d like to think “Tala Tannam” would stand out no matter when it was released. Treading a line between ramshackle (the naturalistically loose handclaps, atypical in this era) and virtuosic (the elegantly plucked guitar that propels the song), it’s a song to get lost in. Mdou Moctar’s vocals melt in and out of the guitar sound, ebbing and flowing toward each chorus and gradually picking up definition only to disappear in a sigh. “Tala Tannam” has a gentleness that embodies its message of love and devotion; in a year as harsh as this could be, it feels like a healing balm.
