Tumblr media
There are echoes of THE BABADOOK and Stephen King’s IT in Talal Selhami’s Moroccan-French ACHOURA (2018, Shudder, Tubi, Prime), but they tend to amplify its power rather than diminish it. The main referent is the King novel, and Selhami’s film creates a deeper, more resonant image of the loss of innocence. Three childhood friends deal with adult trauma because of an incident in which one’s brother was abducted. When the brother returns, they piece together what happened and realize they have to fight a child-eating djinn whose memory had only survived in Stephane’s (Ivan Gonzalez) nightmares and his work as an artist. For the others, the effect is more emotional. Ali (Younes Bouab) is a chain-smoking police detective obsessed with a series of child abductions. That’s led to the break-up of his marriage to Nadia (Sofia Manousha) and alienation from his adoring son. Their story unfolds in flashes, and Selhami trusts his audience to piece them together. From the prologue, he sets the film’s style, a visual poetry composed of tracking shots and rich, dark colors to create a mordant fairy tale. He also depicts the loss of innocence early on as a young boy tries to help a child bride escape from the adult she’s been forced to marry. Then the story jumps to the present, with the viewer charged with seeing how the earlier action relates to the main plot. There are also fragmentary flashbacks that gradually reveal what traumatized the four children. This isn’t a feel-good horror film, but it earns its grimness by creating an almost palpable sense of the emotional connection among the four friends.

ACHOURA- Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Dark Sky Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Four friends reconnect when one of them, who disappeared 25 years ago, suddenly comes back into their lives. They must embrace their past so that together they can confront the terrifying events of their youth to a monstrous creature born of a horrible legend.
REVIEW: ACHOURA is an incredible, innovative and emotional supernatural horror thriller that will blow you away, which is a horror fan’s rave. At its core the film is a tragedy that deals with the loss of innocence, the power of friendship and personal sacrifice.
It is inevitable that audiences will see a comparison to Stephen King’s “It,” the story contains other elements that give a fresh feel. Central to the plot is a Moroccan religious celebration called Ashura, it is also called “Child’s Night.” Children gather around a bonfire and splash water on each other. It is during one of these celebrations that this young boy and girl free a Djinn. Years later their actions have repercussions when these four young friends stumble upon the house where the Djinn is being contained. Only three of the friends emerge as Ali’s brother vanishes. The survivors have pushed the events from that day from their mind and they still bear the mental scars from that day. The writers weave so much into this story. There are cultural elements that they present in a way that makes the film accessible to a wider audience. The film is immersed in many adult themes but they are able to maintain a sense of wonder and innocence in the face of such tragedy and horror. It is a special genre film that can instill terror and bring a viewer to tears as this film did for me. There are several character arcs and the writers manage to fit them all in. It’s a brilliant screenplay.
The visuals are breathtaking. In contrast to the dark reality of the present and the prologue, the flashbacks to the day that changed their lives are rich and vibrant, the colors pop. The film is incredibly paced and edited. The present and past descent into the darkness in such a way as the two events visually merge. The filmmakers play with the cinematography to generate stubble changes in the tone and atmosphere, such as in the final shot. The world is safe again, but the colors are slightly muted, suggesting that it is not 100% okay, especially for these characters.
The production designs are fantastic and the Djinn design and execution is brilliant. It is frightening, the stuff nightmares are made of, but still elegant. I loved how one of the kids grows up to be an artist and there are all these paintings and masks inspired by his nightmares of the Djinn. There is a raw element to all the designs that gives gravitas to these horrifying elements. Under the direction of Talal Selhami all these are orchestrated to as close to perfection as an independent film can be.
Romain Paillot’s score for ACHOURA weaves everything together and allows the film to feel like a big budget Hollywood film. There are scenes where his scores emotionally underpin the moment with a movement reminiscent of the works of John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith.
This is a magical ensemble cast, for the child actors to the adults. These are amazing performances that explore a wide palette of emotions. I was struck by Younes Bouab and Omar Lotfi's performances. Bouab plays the adult Ali. The character is a hard edged police detective so obsessed with his work that it has caused a rift in his family. As the story evolves he presents these raw, real, intense emotions that pull at the viewers heart strings. Other cast members each have equally intense moments.
Talal Selhami’s ACHOURA is an overwhelmingly emotional and epic supernatural thriller that achieves so much. Clearly I could go on, but I do not want to build up your expectations. You should view the film with no expectations in order to fully appreciate what these filmmakers and actors have achieved. This film is in French and Moroccan with English subtitles. I know some viewers are adverse to watching films with subtitles but please get over it. Also, the poster image does not do the film justice so do not be put off by it. You’ll be depriving yourself of one of the best films I’ve reviewed this year. Plus, I don’t feel a dubbed version will capture the raw intensity of emotion of these performances. There is an emotional honesty and rawness to this film that compares to Issa López’s 2017 film “Tigers Are Not Afraid.” So before Stephen King or Guillermo del Toro tell you that you need to see this film, and you hate yourself because you missed it, I’m telling you that you need to see this film. I am excited to see what Talal Selhami delivers next. He is a gift filmmaker whose name you need to be on the watch for.

Why Don’t You Just Die
AN AMBUSH OF ELECTRIC, EXCITING WORLD PREMIERES!
Continuing to set the bar for exciting new genre cinema, CFF brings even more world premieres to the Music Box. We’re not joking around when we say you’ve never seen anything like Eric Power’s ATTACK OF THE DEMONS. Three friends fight off a horde of demons in the apocalyptic film that more than delivers in carnage, gore, and cut-paper animation. Holly’s perfect-on-paper life is threatened by strange dreams she can’t explain in Dean Kapsalis’ THE SWERVE. Both a stellar portrait of depression and a horrific drama, Dean’s feature-debut easily marks him as an emerging talent to watch.
Indie horror vet Lucky McKee (MAY, THE WOMAN) returns with KINDRED SPIRITS, a twisted tale of two sisters, and the one who won’t let anything, or anyone, get between them. Eric Liberacki’s Chicago-set slasher THE LURKER pits theatre students against savage killer in a film that gives new meaning to “The show must go on!”
The festival will also play host to a number of exciting North American and Midwest premieres. Talal Selhami’s Morrocan monster horror ACHOURA, where old friends confront both their past and a beast of legends. Emilio Portes’ demonic border-set BELZEBUTH follows the investigation of missing children that takes a decidedly demonic turn. YouTubers try to crack a ghostly urban legend in Fabrício Bittar’s horror-comedy GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY with equal amounts gags and gore. The Polish pagan epic THE MUTE, from award-winning Polish director Bartosz Konopka, explores a clash of beliefs in a thrilling, atmospheric heavy weight. Daniel de la Vega offers up a throwback to the days of black-and-white Noir films with the bewildering crime thriller PUNTA MUERTO.
Celebrated horror director Joe Begos brings us BLISS his latest pounding feature, that’ll drag you to the deprived underbelly of L.A. with the spiraling artist Dezzy Donahue, whose struggle for inspiration becomes complicated by her mounting bloodlust. Based on a tragic, true story Lucas Heyne’s MOPE follows two best friends, and low-end porn actors, who sought fame but gained infamy in connection to a gruesome, on-set murder. The tables are turned on two wannabe criminals in VILLAINS, from directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen and starring Bill Skarsgård, when thievery runs a foul and the prowlers soon become the prey. Kirill Sokolov delivers a taste of bombastic revenge in WHY DON’T YOU JUST DIE, a delicious serving of Russian dark humour as each character tries to murderously wreak revenge on the next, presented by our friends from across the globe, Paris’ L'Étrange Festival.
Cinepocalypse is thrilled to be supported by the following sponsors: ALTER, Orion, Bloody-Disgusting.com, Shudder, Fangoria, & Vinegar Syndrome.
This year’s poster was designed by visionary heavy metal artist Paul Romano, whose work can be found on hundreds of album covers and frequently collaborates with famed force of musical destruction Mastodon.
Festival badges are available now, and individual tickets go on sale Friday at noon CT at cinepocalypsegenrefest.com

Achoura | Official Trailer, Poster & Images
Director Talal Selhami’s ACHOURA, premiering on DVD and Digital December 14 from Dark Star Pictures.
Tumblr media
Following raves at Cinepocalypse, Brussels Fantastic Film Festival, Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival and more, North America gets to now witness the terrifying tale of a Moroccan legend
Four friends reconnect when one of them, who disappeared 25 years ago, suddenly comes back into their lives. Together, they will have to confront the terrifying events of their youth and fight a monstrous creature born of a horrible legend.
Tumblr media
Of ACHOURA, Franco–Moroccan filmmaker Selhami says : "It is sociologically proven that fantasy and horror cinema has always enjoyed a renewed interest from audiences and critics in times of social and economic turmoil.
Fear cinema is therefore a kind of outlet for the viewer, unfortunately today too used to seeing atrocities through the media. Stories of ghosts, vampires, creatures hidden under the bed, allow us to transpose our fears into something unreal. The best way to play to scare yourself without taking risks.
Tumblr media
The times we are living in are going through a terrible period, between economic crisis, terrorism, disease, natural disasters and the Arab world is unfortunately not spared. Far from it.
That is why I think that the Arab world also has today, and more than ever, its own fantastic stories to tell. Fantasy cinema makes it possible to bypass taboos, to expose facts, to stimulate the unconscious layers of the spectator, it is therefore, for authors, a wonderful tool for expression. When done well, this cinema uses allegories and metaphors to express its words. Its spread is wide, because fear is a universal feeling.
Tumblr media
The Arab world has its advantage to offer because of its current effervescence, but also because the culture is still rich in counts, myths and legends, for the moment, not quite exploited.
Thus, Achoura tells the story of a Djinn, who during a religious festival, very specific to the country (the celebration of childhood), seizes the youngest in order to devour them.
In a way, it is a way of evoking the troubled future of future generations of adults. Because we may not give enough importance to childhood, too concerned about our adult problems. In Achoura children try to survive, thus preserving their innocence. In this sense, the creature of Ashura is none other than the allegory of adulthood that devours childhood and thus generates troubled beings. Childhood and the loss of innocence are subjects that haunt almost all of my projects.
Achoura is therefore a way for me to exorcise this fear."
Tumblr media
Younes Bouab, Sofia Manousha, Moussa Maaskri, and Omar Lotfi star in ACHOURA, on DVD and Digital December 14th, 2021.
