Tradesman

The base model of the RAM 1500 is a crew cab with a 6-foot-4-inch box and 18-inch steel wheels. You can tow up to 7,760 pounds with the V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Standard equipment in this truck includes heated exterior mirrors, a six-speaker stereo, and a 5-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect 3 infotainment system. The Tradesman trim also comes with a rearview camera, push-button start with remote keyless entry, and trailer sway damping.

Tradesman HFE

Sony has finally announced the heavily rumoured State of Play presentation.

Games will be spotlighted every Wednesday on dedicated channels including one for recently released games, another for games revolving around a weekly themes which players can suggest on social media.

Baldur's Gate 3 wins Game of the Year and Best Writing at New York Game Awards 2024

The 13th annual New York Game Awards took place on Jan 23th, with Baldur's Gate 3 taking the top prize of Game of the Year.

Larian Studios' game also took home the award for Best Writing in a Game, having been nominated for six awards in total.

Remedy's Alan Wake 2 also received two accolades including Best World and Best Acting in a Game for Melanie Liburd's performance as Saga Anderson.

Rundisc's Chants of Sennaar won Best Indie Game, while MiHoYo's Honkai: Star Rail took home the award for Best Mobile Game and Sanzaru Games' Asgard's Wrath 2 won Best AR/VR Game.

Elsewhere, Super Mario Bros Wonder won Best Kids Game, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty received the award for Best DLC.

Microsoft makes mass layoffs across Xbox, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax

Microsoft has announced it is cutting around 1,900 jobs across its gaming division, which includes employees at Xbox Game Studios, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax.

As reported by The Verge, the layoffs primarily affect staff at Activision Blizzard, which was only recently acquired by Microsoft for a record-breaking $69 billion. The layoffs were confirmed in a memo to staff by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who called the cuts a "painful decision."

German state proposes ban on loot boxes

A German state is pushing for a ban on loot boxes in video games, which will later be debated at a nationwide level.

German new site Buten un Binnen reported that the governing coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens and the FDP proposed several restrictions around the use of loot boxes, including an outright ban, in the parliament of Bremen.

Netflix's monthly game downloads nearly tripled to 28m in December thanks to GTA

As reported by Mobilegamer.biz based on data from Appmagic (thanks VGC), Netflix's monthly game downloads on iOS and Android climbed from approximately 10m last November to around 28m in December. That jump can be directly attributed to the arrival of Grand Theft Auto on Netflix, with Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas all joining the streaming service in their Definitive Edition guises on 14th December last year.

As per Appmagic's figures, San Andreas was by far the most popular game among Netflix subscribers, and was downloaded 11.6m times. That's compared to 4.1m downloads for Vice City and 2.4m for Grand Theft Auto 3. Combined, that accounts for 18.1m downloads, meaning a further 10m downloads in December came from non-GTA games - the same number of downloads Netflix generated in November without GTA.

Fortnite will return to iOS in the EU soon via a new Epic Games Store app

In a tweet posted on the official Epic Games Newsroom account on X, the publisher said the game “will return to iOS in Europe in 2024, distributed by the upcoming Epic Games Store for iOS”.

It’s not yet clear whether this includes the UK – since the law change was an EU one and the UK is no longer part of the EU – or whether Epic plans to pay Apple the new fee it has announced for alternative app stores.

The changes are being made as a result of the Digital Markets Act, a new EU law which goes into effect in March.

Apple to allow alternative app stores in Europe

Beyond its new policy allowing game streaming apps worldwide, Apple today announced new changes it is making to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, most notably that it will allow alternative app payments and app stores.

For its part, Apple continued to show reluctance to comply with the DMA, repeating concerns that the measures will make its platforms more vulnerable to privacy and security threats.

"Within the DMA's constraints, Apple is committed to protecting the privacy, security, and quality of the iOS user experience in the EU as much as possible," the company said.

The changes will go into effect in March.

2024 Chevrolet Trax First Look: Can This Mini SUV Go From Zero to Hero?

Here’s something you don’t see often in 2022, the year of the $48,000 average new car: A redesigned vehicle carrying a lower MSRP than the model it replaces. Yet here the 2024 Chevrolet Trax is, bucking industry trend by being cheaper than the old Trax. With a starting price of $21,495, the second-generation Trax will undercut its predecessor by $1,400, or six percent, when it goes on sale in spring 2023.

Ask the Chevy Trax team about inflation and they’ll tell you how their new baby has ballooned into a bigger subcompact SUV, not ballooned in price. The 2024 model measures 11 inches longer and two inches wider with a roofline that’s four inches lower than the outgoing car. The design transformation that results is radical—the current Trax has the proportions of a dumpling and a generic look that screams “rental car.” The new one, with styling cues inspired by the Chevrolet Blazer, looks athletic and fresh. The growth spurt does wonders for utility, too. A six-inch wheelbase stretch adds three inches of rear-seat legroom, and cargo capacity swells from 18.7 to 25.6 cubic feet.

Fewer Dollars, Fewer Cylinders, Fewer Gears

If Chevy’s selling more car for less money, surely there has to be a catch, right? The answer to that question hides under the hood, where the Trax trades its 155-hp turbocharged inline-four for a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The 2024 model’s six-speed automatic saves weight and cost compared to the the nine-speed automatic and continuously variable transmission that were previously offered. All-wheel drive is also no longer available; all 2024 models will be front-wheel drive. Front-drivers in this segment aren’t exactly rare. Look no further than the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Soul.

Don’t go jumping to conclusions about that power cut, though. Seth Valentine, program engineering manager for the Trax, says that despite the 18-hp hit, the Trax’s 0-60-mph time improves by a full second. If our test numbers confirm that to be true, the leisurely mid-nine-second shuffle would become a more tolerable eight-second jaunt.

Valentine also notes that engineers have improved shift quality and shift speed, all while raising the fuel economy figures by an unspecified amount. The old version earned a 24-mpg city estimate and a 32-mpg highway figure, and we expect the city number to jump several ticks. Standard active noise cancellation should also help tame any bad vibes from three-cylinder engine.

Tech Comes Standard, Heated Mirrors Don’t

The Trax’s low entry price doesn’t come without a few sacrifices. The base model wears steel wheels and unheated exterior mirrors, although it does include the all-important 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Every Trax also comes with automated emergency braking, automatic high beams, and lane-keeping assistance as well.

Spend a little more cheddar and Chevy throws in more amenities without eroding the value proposition. Remote start is standard on every Trax above the base model. Heated seats, which are optional on LS and LT trims, come standard along with a heated steering wheel on 1RS, 2RS, and Activ models. The infotainment screen grows to 11.0 inches and is joined by an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, which replaces analog gauges in the LT, 2RS, and Activ trims. Those models are also equipped with automatic climate control, push-button start, and rear-seat USB ports. Wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, a sunroof, and a power driver’s seat are available either as options or as standard equipment on higher trims.

Affordable No Matter How You Spec It

The Trax starts about $1,200 above that of the smaller Hyundai Venue and within a couple hundred dollars of the Nissan Kicks’ price. It’s positioned more than $2,000 below the Toyota Corolla Cross and nearly $5,000 under the inexplicably expensive new Honda HR-V. This isn’t just a misleading base price trick either, as even the top Trax model starts below $25,000.

Chevy’s five-trim Trax lineup includes RS models with a unique grille and black badging and an Activ model with a monochromatic motif. Pricing is as follows:

Here’s two considerations: The Trailblazer, with a starting price of $23,295, is slightly more expensive. It also offers all-wheel drive as an option.

The Redemption of the Bean Counters

We started this story with something you rarely hear in 2022: Here’s a new SUV that will cost less in the future than what you’d pay today. We’re going to end it with something you’ve probably never before read: Let’s give it up for GM’s bean counters. Seriously. The General’s accountants have rightly been pilloried in the past for making the bad kind of cheap cars with cuts to all the wrong features and design choices. But between the $26,595 Bolt EV, the roughly $30,000 Equinox EV, and the 2024 Trax, it looks like Chevy may be kicking off a streak of making the good kind of cheap cars—affordable vehicles that don’t cut corners where it matters.

We’ll need to drive the 2024 Trax before we can pass full judgment on it, but at the very least, it looks to easily be a better version of its predecessor at a better price.

BMW AG has boosted orders for battery cells to keep pace with accelerating demand for electric cars that made up for more than 11% of deliveries during the half of the year, Bloomberg reported.

The German carmaker now has contracts for more than 20 billion euros ($23.8 billion) of batteries, up from 12 billion euros previously, CEO Oliver Zipse said in an interview.

The cells are destined for i4 sedans, iX sport utility vehicles and other models BMW is producing through 2024, the report noted and added that the company plans to start switching to a new generation of batteries the following year.

Top banks in Europe continue to use tax havens to book chunks of profits, a trend that has changed little since 2014 despite country-by-country disclosures becoming mandatory, the EU Tax Observatory said in a report on Monday.

Disclosures from 36 major European banks showed they booked a total of 20 billion euros ($23.77 billion) or about 14% of total profits, in tax havens, even though few were employed there, Reuters reported.

Profits booked by banks in tax havens work out at around 238,000 per employee, compared with 65,000 euros in non-tax havens, the report said.

India’s gold imports in August nearly doubled from a year ago to their highest level in five months on an improvement in demand and as a correction in prices prompted jewellers to ramp up purchases for the festive season, Reuters reported, citing a government source.

India imported 121 tonnes of gold in August, compared to 63 tonnes a year earlier, the report noted. In value terms, August imports surged to $6.7 billion from $3.7 billion a year ago.

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Monday said it has increased prices of its entire product range, except Celerio, by up to 1.9% with immediate effect, according to PTI.

In a regulatory filing, the company said that it has taken the decision to hike prices due to an increase in various input costs. This is MSI’s third price hike this year.

The auto major has already raised prices in January and April this year, with an overall hike of around 3.5%, the news agency noted.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has emerged as the most popular social security scheme under the National Pension System (NPS), PTI reported.

Out of 4.2 crore NPS subscribers, over 66% or 2.8 crore opted for the APY at the end of 2020-21, mainly from the non-metro centres, according the annual report of the National Pension Systems Trust.

APY also dominated in terms of growth rate of the subscriber base, with a gain of 33% on-year in fiscal year ending March 2021, the report noted.

Govt’s excise collection jumps 48% in Apr-July

The government’s collections from levy of excise duty on petroleum products have jumped 48% in the first four months of the current fiscal year, with the incremental mop-up being 3-times of the repayment liability of legacy oil bonds in the full fiscal, official data showed.

Data available from the Controller General of Accounts in the Union Ministry of Finance showed excise duty collections during April-July 2021 surging to over ₹1 lakh crore, from ₹67,895 crore mop-up in the same period of the previous fiscal.
