~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Open in 1984, a huge house at night and a car pulls up. A man, Michael Eng, rushes inside looking for his wife, who was admitted. He hands the keys to his car to one annoying nurse and learns his wife is in labor. The doctor comes out and tells him his wife asked for him to not join her, even though we see her calling his name. Dr. Oakwood tells him there is plenty of time. She gives him a candle and tells him to place it at the base of a mighty oak tree. Michael is tired of their mumbo jumbo, but Oakwood reminds him her methods made this baby happen. He takes the candle is is shown where to go.
Michael follows the path outside, under the full moon. At oak he finds an altar and places the candle. A crow caws, the wind blows and the ground shakes. Suddenly a root wraps around his neck and he is pulled down into the earth. We see a strange wooden idol in the tree.
In the delivery room, his wife Jennifer has delivered a baby, a boy which Oakwood hands to the mother. When Jennifer asks about the twin, a girl, she's told the child was stillborn. She is adamant she heard the girl crying, so they sedate her. Upstairs, Oakwood and some nurses have a nursery set up and string vines of leaves about. Oakwood shows off the baby girl they call Sheila, and call her their first prophetess of many, hoping to bring back the Druid people.
Cut to credits.
Present day, a couple is shopping for a cradle and a baby doll for the nursery for their soon-to-be-born child. Seems they have tried for 13 years to conceive, and then met Dr. Oakwood, the husband is not a fan of Oakwood's naturalistic methods, and the wife jokingly scolds him.
At Oakwood's hospital, many expecting parents wait to be seen. Upstairs, we see the nursery is now home to many small children, all girls. They are taught lessons of the forest and nature. We also see Sheila, now a small child. Oakwood watches happily.
Johnny is buying a hot dog from a cart when a fight breaks out between a woman and a newspaper vendor, as she tries to steal a magazine and rants about a woman stealing her baby. Johnny breaks it up and pays for the magazine. We see the woman is Jennifer Eng, and the magazine has Oakwood on the cover, an article about her amazing method to help infertile women conceive.
Johnny buys Jennifer a coffee and they sit on a bench as she tells him about Oakwood's spells. Johnny asks if he can call her husband, but she thinks he abandoned her. And their son Scotty died the previous year. Jennifer is afraid to go there, but asks if Johnny would, and shows him a picture of her son, believing he could recognize her daughter, since the kids were twins. Johnny is unsure, but she asks for help.
At Curious Goods, he's told the story to Micki and Jack. In the article, it says Oakwood has a 98% rate of success. Johnny thinks they should check it out, but jack doesn't find her name in the Manifest. Micki says the couple they saw did say Oakwood works miracles. Johnny leaves, having promise Jennifer he'd help. Micki leaves to ask if the couple who shopped there might also be expecting twins.
Oakwood and her nurses are at the oak tree that night performing a ritual in white robes. They cut off one of the strange growths, then take turns drinking from a skull. They believe the oak will soon bear fruit, one for each nurse to take and grow their own tree, spreading their Druidic cult far and wide.
Johnny arrives nearby and sneaks to a window. He sees a man waiting, who is sent to bring a candle to the oak. Johnny climbs an emergency ladder to the roof and sees all the children in the attic nursery. Holding the photo, he sees Sheila and her resemblance to her brother Scotty. A nurse comes in to send them to bed, pulling the curtain. Johnny goes back down as the expectant father places the candle and is pulled into the ground. Johnny hears his scream but arrives too late. A flower on the tree opens and we see a small idol inside.
At the store the next day, Johnny asks them to explain the kids. Micki says maybe they belong to the nurses, and Jack says maybe the scream he heard was from an animal, and Johnny is reading too much into it. But he can't let it go. He says he will wait until dark to go back, but he believes Jennifer.
That night, him and Micki go to the hospital and find the lights out. In the woods, the cult and the children are performing a ritual in anticipation of the also-present Sanderson couple's upcoming delivery. Johnny and Micki go to the room, and see no kids inside. He opens the window to enter and Micki tries to stop him. But in he goes.
Johnny and Micki go downstairs to snoop around. They go to Oakwood's office. In the woods, the ritual goes on. Johnny can't find a file for the Eng couple. Micki sees a fire in the woods, so they go to investigate, but Johnny also grabs some files. They make their way to the woods, and watch as the Sandersons drink from a cup as the group chants.
Back at Curious Goods, they fill Jack in on what they saw. Micki is creeped out by the language, and Jack speaks Gaelic, which Micki says was the same. Jack tells them about Celts and Druids and what an oak tree means to them. He is worried a cursed item must somehow be involved.
Next day, they are still looking at the files. Seems all have the same things in common, such as all having boy children and many husbands abandoning them and vanishing. Jack finds a fertility statue made of black Irish oak in the Manifest. The god supposedly gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, from his forehead. Lewis sold it to a Dr. Frederick Cornwall.
Oakwood examines Mrs. Sanderson, who seems to think she feels two sets of feet. Oakwood laughs it off, later telling a nurse they will give her enough meds that she won't remember how many kids she had. A nurse comes in saying the tree is blooming but the fruit isn't ripening. Seems every twelfth husband is enough to feed the tree for a year, but to reproduce, they need another sacrifice. Seems like Mr. Sanderson will be their victim.
Micki is talking to Dr. Cornwall, who says he donated the statue to a charity. Micki asks if Oakwood could have gotten it. He knows Oakwood, he can asks. He's a pediatrician and she refers patients. He also has explanations for why her results produce all boys, and that fathers may leave due to the stress of trying to conceive for so long. Micki isn't so sure.
Jennifer Eng calls Johnny, who says he has investigated and he doesn't want to get her hopes up, but her daughter might be there. Jennifer only hears that and takes off. Micki comes in and tells them about her meeting with Cornwall. Jack tells them about his research, that all the Druid priest were women, as is the entire staff of Oakwood's hospital. Johnny speculates the missing fathers were sacrifices. Jack thinks the sacrifices are tied to the full moon and nature, and Micki says this weekend is both a full moon and the winter solstice.
The girls are in their nursery, Shelia telling the nurse about a dream about her father, who told her he was dead. The nurse reminds her they have told them all their parents live in foreign countries. Jennifer Eng comes in saying that is a lie, telling Shelia she is her mother. Other nurses come in an stop her. Oakwood tells her she will be the guest of honor at the sacrifice of fire tonight.
Oakwood has Jennifer tied up and nurses making a casket out of wood and straw. One nurse, Morgan, is upset that they plan to sacrifice a woman, but Oakwood says this is different, that the burning will ripen the fruit of the tree and any sacrifice is acceptable. Morgan is still unsure, but Oakwood tries to assuage her. Then the Sandersons arrive, in labor.
At the store, Johnny wonders where Jennifer went to, and Micki can't get ahold of the Sandersons. Jack says they will head out to the hospital to take a look.
Oakwood sends Mr. Sanderson out of the delivery room, telling him all is going well.
Jack sends Johnny to check the nursery, and him and Micki go to snoop around. A nurse gives Mr. Sanderson a candle and tells him to head to the oak tree. He is reluctant, but does as told. Mrs. Sanderson is having a rough labor and doesn't want drugs but Oakwood knocks her out anyway.
Micki and Jack slip inside and hide. exploring a room. Micki sees a chest from the ceremony, with the skull inside, but not statue. On the roof, Johnny is about to enter the window, but sees Mr. Sanderson heading to the oak and goes to follow. Sanderson puts the candle on the altar, the wind blows and ground shakes. As he is dragged, Johnny tries to save him but gets pulled into the ground himself. The earth seals back up.
Micki and Jack hear the cry of the first Sanderson baby and Micki goes to investigate. Jack sees the cult in their robes with torches and the casket outside, but before he can react, Morgan puts a cloth over his face and knocks him out.
Micki goes up and finds the nursery full of children. She asks if they saw a strange woman, and Shelia asks if she means the woman who said she was her mother? Micki says yes.
Morgan and Oakwood decide to sacrifice Jack instead of Jennifer, ensuring the tree bears fruit.
Under the tree, Johnny struggles with the writhing roots.
Oakwood and a nurse hook Jennifer up to kill her by slowly drawing all the blood from her body.
Micki asks is Shelia knows where they took the woman, but she doesn't. Micki asks if Shelia will help her find the woman, cause she is her mother. They leave as a nurse comes in with the new baby.
The women proceed to the oak with their torches and Jack in the coffin. Johnny continues to struggle to get free from the ground.
Micki and Shelia look for Jack and Jennifer. Shelia says they must have gone to the tree. Micki finds a sleeping Mrs. Sanderson, but leaves her.
Johnny hears Mr. Sanderson calling for help. He also finds skeletons of previous dead fathers.
The tree's flowers keep opening as Jack in the casket is raised into the tree.
Micki finds Jennifer and goes to help her.
Johnny finds Mr. Sanderson but the tree fights him.
Micki tells the reunited Jennifer and Shelia to get out of there and goes to find Johnny and Jack.
Johnny frees Mr. Sanderson and together they look for a way out as the cult chants above them. Jack spins around, helpless. Johnny finds the original statue in the trees roots and begins cutting it free.
Above, the tree sounds like it is screaming and Oakwood watches in horror as one by one, the flowers fall off. A lightning storm starts and the cult realizes the tree is dying. Johnny keeps cutting and eventually gets the statue free. The casket with Jack inside falls to the ground, lightning strikes the tree and more and flowers with mini idols inside fall to the ground. The cult rushes around in a panic, Oakwood unable to stop them from fleeing. Micki arrives and frees Jack as Johnny and Mr. Sanderson emerge from the ground. Oakwood tries to gather up the seedlings, but lightning strikes the tree and a huge limb falls on her, killing her. Jack and all back off from the tree as more lightning strikes, destroying the tree completely. Jack takes the statue from Johnny and tells him and Micki to gather all the seedlings, and not to miss any. He leads Mr. Sanderson back to the hospital.
That morning at the store, Jack apologizes to Johnny for not listening to him earlier. If he had, maybe the statue wouldn't have replicated so many copies of itself. But Micki reminds him that Jennifer has her daughter back and the Sandersons have both of their children. As Jack goes to put the mini idols in the vault with the rest, Johnny says they should look for another cradle for the Sandersons, a twin.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts:
Quite a different episode, delving into the Celts and Druidic religion and even the hope people have to have a child of their own.
Since I assume inspections must have to happen at Oakwood's hospital, no one ever found the nursery or all the children? Or wonder why so many husbands vanished without a trace? Never an investigation or anything? Oakwood is famous enough to be on a magazine, but not looked into too deeply.
Johnny is a good guy, helping Jennifer and thee listening to her story, but wow, Jennifer jumps right into asking a stranger for a huge favor! Break in and find my daughter!
Micki says the upcoming weekend is the winter solstice. In 1989, that was on December 21st and in 1990, that happened on December 22nd. This episode aired on May 19, 1990. Hmmm…
Is this the first time a cursed item had the ability to replicate mini versions of itself? And what a terrorizing thought. I wonder how many mini idols they ended up finding. And hopefully didn't miss any in the confusion.
What a story the news must have had with the aftermath, and all the kids found living in the attic. Lots of surprised parents, for sure. Wonder if Jack and crew had some strange questions to answer.
Next week: The Charnel Pit

'A Christmas Story' was launched in the Christmas season of 1983, and did modest enterprise at first (individuals do not usually go to movies with particular holiday themes). Turner Broadcasting has maintained ownership of the broadcast rights, and because the mid-Nineteen Nineties, aired the movie more and more on TBS, TNT, and TCM. By 1995, it was aired on those networks a mixed six instances on December 24–26, and in 1996, it was aired eight times over four days, not together with local airings. The parade scene, filmed simply outdoors Higbee's on Public Square at 3 AM. The parade was filmed at night time as a result of during the daytime the 1960s Erieview Tower and Federal Building had been seen from the Public Square, as was the BP Tower, which was underneath building at the time. Frequent rewatching of the movie reveals, especially to an adult audience, that Mrs. Parker is actually a a lot larger part of Ralphie's emotional memory than we give her credit for on first blush.
Of course, the plot answer is so he nonetheless has to do battle with the canines, nevertheless it's hard to not surprise how issues obtained this bad within the first place. Selena Barrientos is the affiliate entertainment and news editor for Good Housekeeping — she writes and stories on the latest exhibits and films, along with spotlighting Latinx celebrities.
Yes, it's only a fantasy, nevertheless it's a grim one for a child who largely just wants to shoot targets in the yard. My mom was about to make another sensible maneuver in the legendary battle of the lamp. The epic battle which follows lives in the folklore of Cleveland Street to this very day. The snap of some sparks, a quick whiff of ozone, and the lamp blazed forth in unparalleled glory.
TNT also aired the film twice the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend . In 2009, the 24-hour marathon continued on TBS, for the 13th total yr, beginning at 8 p.m.
Whatever's happening there, this family has an unhealthy relationship with profanity, and they should all get on the same page. Ralphie's father, solely ever referred to as The Old Man is a typical representation of a Midwestern father figure in the early twentieth century. He's stern but not cruel, caring however not affectionate, and distant however not absent. He's a man's man, and he spends most of the film simply attempting to learn his newspaper and luxuriate in slightly bit of turkey while his sons get into trouble round him. If you look close sufficient, though, there are little hints of eccentricity in The Old Man's life. He insists on being timed when he modifies a tire, for instance, and went by way of the difficulty of burying his "major award" in the yard and supposedly taking part in "Taps" in tribute to it as he did. He even takes a while within the division retailer to skip together with the Wizard of Oz characters.
Flick walks into class with a black eye one day, and Miss Shields pays little consideration to it. Even when Ralphie lastly beats the hell out of Farkus, his mom ignores the opposite kid within the struggle and focuses only on her son, never actually stopping to ask what happens. It calls to thoughts a world by which kids are on their very own, and to modern audiences that can be slightly scary. Ralphie's quest for his Red Ryder BB gun culminates when, feeling the entire adults in his life have forsaken him, he decides to appeal directly to Santa at the native division store on Christmas Eve. This backfires spectacularly, as Ralphie spends the entire time ready in line trying to focus on his objective, only to overlook every thing he was going to say when he lastly climbs the towering North Pole construction within the retailer. To make issues worse, the Santa on the top seems unusually intimidating and even frightening to Ralphie's eyes, as he panics amid a closing retailer and a bunch of pushy elves.
Then again, the enchantment of the movie is so vast, anybody would possibly think about it his or her movie. Before “A Christmas Story,” McGavin’s best-identified position was that of Carl Kolchak, the exhausting-nosed, exhausting-charging reporter with a knack for shut encounters of the supernatural type. He had first played Kolchak in “The Night Stalker,” the January 1972 TV movie a few vampire on the free in Las Vegas. It set scores records, attracting an astounding 54 % of all people watching TV in the course of the 90-minute time period when it aired on ABC.
We know very little about the Bumpus household in the house beside the Parkers. All we really know is that they have plenty of canines and those canines actually hate the Old Man in an nearly pathological way. They comply with him from his automobile to his door, try to push their means in at every possibility, and in the end devour the household's turkey when the door is left open just enough for them to get by way of and wreak havoc. Dogs might be canine, of course, however the movie doesn't tell us what else is occurring that enables this to occur. Why hasn't the old man marched over and had it out with Mr. Bumpus, or even gone to the police to complain a few continued nuisance within the neighborhood?
Superfan Brian Jones purchased the home for $a hundred and fifty,000 on eBay in 2005. He spent a further $350,000 to restore the inside and the surface to look precisely the way it did within the movie. In 2006, A Christmas Story House opened as a museum for costumes and the props really used throughout production.

Neca A Christmas Story Old Man Clothed eight Inch Action Figure.Celebrate the hilarious vacation tale of little Ralphie’s quest for the final word Christmas present with this clothed motion figure from A Christmas Story. Initially overlooked as a sleeper film, A Christmas Story was launched per week before Thanksgiving 1983 to moderate success, earning about $2 million in its first weekend.
A key level of rivalry comes midway via, when the Old Man's beloved "main award" is broken, and he's unable to glue it back collectively. The mom readily admits to breaking the leg lamp, however claims it was an accident that occurred whereas she was watering plants. Some viewers believe her, whereas others assume that she did it deliberately as a result of she was sick of wanting on the factor, and indeed she does confirm she thinks it is "the ugliest factor I actually have ever seen in my complete life" after it breaks.
Both have been written by Jean Shepherd, whereas the latter was additionally directed by Bob Clark, who directed A Christmas Story. These movies are as wild because the alternate movie endings that never made it to theaters. Located at 3159 W eleventh Street in Cleveland, Ohio, you'll be able to go to the precise Parker home from A Christmas Story.
Jeff Gillen was an old good friend of Clark's who had been in considered one of his earliest films. The schoolyard bully, Scut Farkus, was played by Zack Ward, now an actor, author and director, who had actually been bullied himself whereas in elementary college. In 2017, he stated he was shocked at the impression his function had over the years.
In 2014, he became president of "A Minor Consideration," a company that lobbies for the safety of youngsters within the leisure trade. During the coronavirus pandemic, Scott started appearing within the YouTube comedy sequence The Quarantine Bunch alongside different child stars. Scott Schwartz's character ought to have caught up for himself as a substitute of licking that frozen pole — however, in any case, he was triple-canine-dared. Unlike a lot of his costars, Scott received his big break earlier than A Christmas Story when he starred alongside Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason in The Toy. The New Jersey actor also filmed the comedy Kidco in 1982, nevertheless it wasn't released till two years later.
Clark initially wished him for the role of Ralphie, however decided he was "too obvious" a choice and auditioned many different younger actors earlier than realizing that Billingsley was the right selection in spite of everything. Still another source of frustration for The Old Man is the canines that belong to the Bumpus family, the Parkers' hillbilly next-door neighbors. The Bumpuses personal "no less than 785 smelly hound dogs" that harass The Old Man whenever he comes house from work.
He's also produced a handful of projects, including the Freeform TV sequence Siren. has guest starred in ABC's comedy sequence The Goldbergs as a photographer. After the classic holiday movie, on the age of 17 Ian grew to become the youngest member to be accepted to the celebrated Groundling's Comedy Theater in Los Angeles, the place he took comedy workshops. A jack of all trades, Ian ultimately decided to train and carry out all around the world as a puppeteer.
On Christmas Day, the canines wreck the household's dinner by romping through their kitchen and consuming their turkey, forcing the household to go to a Chinese restaurant for Christmas dinner. The Old Man wins a "major award" in a contest – a desk lamp within the shape of a lady's leg sporting a fishnet stocking. "The Battle of the Lamp" develops, ending with Mrs. Parker "accidentally" destroying it, much to the Old Man's fury. Unable to fix the lamp, he defeatedly buries the stays in the back yard. The entrance of the Parkers' house where A Christmas Story was filmed within the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland's west side. The constructing was restored and reconfigured inside to match the soundstage interiors and is open to the general public as A Christmas Story House.
The numbers don’t lie and, based on Mental Floss, Ralphie says he wants the Red Ryder BB Gun 28 occasions all through the course of the movie—or once every three minutes and 20 seconds. Fra-gee-lay, for these acquainted with the movie, is a reference to the vacation traditional, “A Christmas Story,” where Darren McGavin as old man Parker has a prize delivered to his home. Did you know there were two sequels made to A Christmas Story? The first one was a 1988 made-for-TV film known as Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss and the other one was My Summer Story from 1994.

DAMO
Minden idők legjobb koncertlemeze, Damien Dempsey: Live At The Olympia című 2006-os albuma, itt kell elindítani.
Dempsey az első lemezével (They Don’t Teach This Shit In School) még csak szűk körben lett népszerű, de a 2004-es Seize The Day hatalmas sztárrá tette Írországban, a dalszerző-előadók egyik őshazájában a helyi legnagyobbakhoz kezdték hasonlítgatni, Chris Moore-hoz, Luke Kellyhez, Shane MacGowanhez.
A koncertet nyitó Patience-ben ez ismétlődik, hogy “I will keep my eye on my goal.” A következő Party On-ban a drogozásról fest aktuális képet, 2005-ben pont Írországban laktam, láttam. Pontosan azt írta meg Dempsey, amit az ország gazdasági fellendülése hozott magával, a hirtelen jött gazdagsággal kezdeni mit sem tudó, mámorba vesző eltévelyedést. A Not On Your Own Tonight a magányosoknak nyújt támaszt, a Sing All Our Cares Away az elszaródott családokban felnövőknek, az Industrial School a bármilyen abúzust elszenvedőknek.
Tedd félre a Negative Vibesokat és akkor It’s All Good. A koncertlemezt legjobb dalával fejezi be, a Colony arról szól, hogy a nyugati hódítók által a meghódítottaknak okozott szenvedések miatt sose késő elnézést kérni: “You came from Germany, from France, from England / And from Spain / From Belgium and from Portugal / You all done much the same / You took what was not yours / Went against your own bible / You broke your own laws / Just to out do the rival.” Tizenévvel a szobordöntések előtt, annál sokkal élesebb kérdéseket megfogalmazva. (Itt a teljes szöveg, máig egy csoda.) A végén percekig énekli a közönség, hogy
“You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free Inside our minds we hold, hold the key”
A film erről szól: “The film centres around the music of Irish singer songwriter Damien Dempsey but also turns the lens onto his fans. Every Christmas in Dublin, the crowds gather for Damo’s Christmas gig at Vicar Street. For many, these shows have become a cathartic ritual, a safe space where emotions can be laid bare. Through the prism of the concert, we meet Dempsey and three members of the audience. We hear their stories, unravel their grief and find the light in the darkness through communal art.”
Legfelül látható a trailere. Valaki, aki már látta, azt mondta róla, hogy “I've seen no better film about the social value of art." Ez a valaki Brian Eno.

184. the woods are full of cuckoos (1937)
release date: december 4th, 1937
series: merrie melodies
director: frank tashlin
starring: mel blanc (owlcott, walter finchell, milton squirrel, wendell howl, fox, raven mcquandry), tedd pierce (ben birdie, tizzie fish, andy bovine), sara berner (polly gillette, canary livingstone)
Tumblr media
this cartoon gets the honorable award of possibly being the most dated warner bros. shorts in its vast repertoire of cartoons. not to worry! this will be a fun cartoon to unpack—i love delving into the shorts that involve extensive research. learning something new is something that‘s very rewarding to me, and i hope it is to you, too!
a giant ode to the short lived radio program community sing (lasting from 1936-1937), the short chronicles a woodland radio show hosted by a variety of caricatured animals putting on various acts.
Tumblr media
iris in to the ringing of a bell. a pudgy, bespectacled owl rings it as he stands illuminated by the moonlight, preaching to all of the woodland critters, ready to start the show. he introduces himself as “owlcott”, a take on commentator alexander woollcott. he “blandly announces” (his words, not mine) the introduction of the master of ceremonies, ben birdie--a bird caricature of radio personality ben bernie, “the old maestro”.
Tumblr media
birdie’s caricature is not new to audience’s eyes. the caricature, along with a handful of others, is reused from friz freleng’s the coocoo nut grove from 1936, a short that is very similar in vein to this one. tedd pierce provides birdie’s suave, velvety vocals as he introduces the program, only to be interrupted by the nasally cries of mel blanc. out pops walter finchell, a caricature of bernie’s faux-enemy walter winchell, both of whom carrying a notorious (and fake) feud in the radio-verse. it was common for winchell to interrupt the smooth-talking bernie, either throwing pranks or remarks his way, to which bernie dismissed every time. indeed, a signature tashlin upshot angle reveals finchell dropping an egg on top of birdie, who blocks it nonchalantly with a handy umbrella.
art loomer’s backgrounds for the cartoon are absolutely gorgeous. they’re vibrant in color, very lush and painterly, but remain playful and sophisticated at the same time. they certainly serve as a highlight to the short. and, as always, carl stalling’s scores are a blast to hear--his sardonic, wah-wah rendition of “cause my baby says it’s so” is a jolly juxtaposition to the prior score of “love is on the air tonight”, the latter being the song’s cartoon debut. it would be reused in cartoons such as the daffy doc, whereas “cause my baby says its so” was heard previously in rover’s rival.
birdie introduces a clever squirrel caricature of milton berle, whose routine gets interrupted by a little parrot named polly. polly is a take on eileen barton’s character, little jolly gillette, who was portrayed as the daughter of the show’s sponsor. polly and milton go through their act together, polly bluntly (yet innocently) announcing “my daddy says ya gotta let me sing ‘cause he’s a sponsor!” you can listen to real recordings of their banter here!
volney white’s animation of milton and polly is lively and jovial, constantly moving. milton energetically introduces us to our next star, pointing in the wrong direction and fixing it last second as he gestures towards a bird caricature of country singer wendell hall.
Tumblr media
even if viewers don’t recognize the bird’s counterpart, they will most certainly recognize his voice--mel uses his foghorn leghorn voice for wendell “howl”. of course, foghorn wouldn’t debut for another 9 years, but that’s another story. the animation of the raucous bird is fun to watch as he extends his neck and wraps it around in coils around the microphone stand. random? yes, but fun nevertheless.
Tumblr media
perhaps even more commendable is the staggering crowd shot that succeeds wendell’s scenes. the crowd is mirrored horizontally, but that doesn’t lessen the blow from how claustrophobic it is. wendell asks the audience to get out their songbooks and turn to page “22... no, page 44. uh, no, uh, page 28. uh, 42, uh, 36, uh, 45...”
wendell is transformed from an entertainer to an auctioneer, spitting out numbers at rapid pace as his crowd frantically tears through their songbooks. finally, he concedes. “oh, never mind. we won’t use the books.” off screen, the crowd roars in unison: “OH YES WE WILL!” with that, wendell is generously showered with a barrage of books, buried in the pile of rejected papers. the timing of the scene is comedically sharp and energetic, one of the more entertaining acts of the cartoon.
Tumblr media
now, for the real song number, lead by goat and bear caricatures of billy jones and ernie hare (would a rabbit caricature be too on the nose?) respectively, animated by volney white. they march out onto the stage--er, tree trunk--and open the curtains to reveal a sing-along to the eponymous song. thus, the camera pans into the lyrics as everybody bursts into the all-too-earworm-causing song number.
as the crowd, ben birdie and walter finchell all lend their voices to the song, a fox caricature of fred allen sings “swanee river”, clashing with the unity of everybody else. in a nod to friz freleng’s toy town hall where the same routine was executed, a little bunny excitedly coos “ohhhh, mr. allen! you’re singing the wrong sooooong!” the fox bursts into everybody’s favorite Mel Blanc Yell as he repeats a frequent ‘30s catchphrase: “WHY DON’T SOMEBODY TELL ME THESE THINGS!?”
featured in the song is a seemingly interminable cast of celebrity caricatures, all introduced as the camera pans across the screen, each lending their voice to part of the song. some puns require more effort than others (dick powell as “dick fowl” rolls off the tongue better than al jolson as “al goatson”). caricatures include:
eddie cantor as eddie gander, sophie tucker as sophie turkey, w.c. fields as w.c. fieldmouse, dick powell as dick fowl, fats waller as fats swallow, deanna durbin as deanna terrapin, irvin s. cobb as irvin s. frog, fred macmurray as fred mcfurry, bing crosby as bing crowsby, al jolson as al goatson, ruby keeler as ruby squealer, lanny ross as lanny hoss, grace moore as grace moose, and finally lily pons as lily swans.
Tumblr media
speaking of grace and lily, they’re both highlighted as they fight to out-perform each other, seeing who can sing the highest note. tashlin pulls of a rather intriguing camera move: as the pan settles on the two of them, the background changes. it’s a subtle maneuver, but smart thinking nonetheless--especially since the camera extends into a vertical pan. as both women fight to sing the highest note, their necks extend, both of them scaling high into the night sky, harmonizing on one final shrill note. they both crumple back into the stands, exhausted by their efforts. some fun exaggerated animation for sure--one wonders how much further this would have been pushed had this been tashlin’s second stint at WB rather than his first. his speed often rivaled, if not out-performed, tex avery’s.
Tumblr media
birdie and finchell have a brief interstitial together before making way for a raven caricature of haven macquarrie (raven mcquandry). his sequence is almost jarringly short, but full of fun drawings and poses--the pose of him standing curtly with his arms crossed is awfully reminiscent of izzy ellis’ work under tashlin and later bob clampett in the mid ‘40s. mcquandry asks “do YOU wanna be an actor?”, parotting the name of his real life counterpart’s show so do you want to be an actor? the audience shouts “NO!” in unison, causing mcquandry to do a take and shrug dubiously. though the scene is only a few short seconds, the animation brings forth some much needed vitality.
next is a penguin caricature of joe penner, singing a hilariously out-of-tune rendition of “my green fedora”. the animation is reused from the cartoon of the same name (notice how he doesn’t have penguin feet!), which was also used in toy town hall. not a complaint, but more an observation--this is by far the most humorous performance of the song yet, sung by blanc rather than tommy bond.
another fun scene with some vivacious animation is a sequence featuring a mule caricature of martha raye (dubbed moutha bray), singing a cover of “how could you?”, which has been featured as an underscore in cartoons such as porky’s badtime story and its later remake, tick tock tuckered. raye’s large mouth served as prime material for caricatures, as we see here. the animation is snappy, fun, and vivid--she finishes her song by “swallowing” the camera, an old trick that beckons memories of the harman and ising cartoons of animation past.
Tumblr media
an interesting trend in the ‘30s WB cartoons is the trend of playing with the iris, whether it was the closing iris out or an iris in between transitions. tex avery would consistently play with the final iris out on his cartoons, whereas directors such as friz freleng and bob clampett would use one as a transition between scenes. here, tashlin uses the “swallow the camera” technique as a segue for an iris in, tedd pierce’s falsetto squeaking “hello folksies!” as we’re introduced to a fish caricature of tizzie lish, a character played by bill comstock on al pearce and his gang.
though tizzie has long faded into obscurity (as has the entire community sing radio show), it’s still quite easy to appreciate pierce’s vocals and mannerisms as he portrays the character. it’s always a joy to hear him doing voices for cartoons--he’s never been my favorite writer on the crew, but he was an excellent talent as a voice actor. his squeaky deliveries, matter of fact deliveries “mix them up... are you mixing? my friends say i’m a good mixer. are you? or aren’t you?” as tizzie haphazardly dumps food items and their respective utensils into a bowl and prepares the meal are nothing short of hilarious. the timing is very well executed and can be appreciated regardless of background knowledge.
after humming a pitchy rendition of “the lady in red” while waiting for her concoction to bake in the waffle iron, tizzie removes the homemade waffle and discards it, instructing the audience “now take the ‘wiffle’ out and eat the iron. you must have iron in your system. or should you?” thus concludes tizzie’s act, certainly heightened in hilarity by pierce’s vocals and timing.
for the final act, ben birdie introduces a possum caricature of louella parsons, the host of the radio program hollywood hotel, which served as a way to advertise upcoming movies by featuring guest stars enacting some of the scenes. here, we have caricatures of jack benny (as jack bunny, the first of his many reoccurrences), mary livingstone (canary livingstone), and andy devine (andy bovine).
tedd pierce voices andy bovine, whose voice burlusqued not only in this cartoon, but to a greater extent in friz freleng’s my little buckeroo not even a year later. devine, a western star, was notorious for his scratchy, shrill voice which was rife for comedic opportunity. indeed, this scene here with pierce’s vocals is nothing short of hilarious:
Tumblr media
the trio chronicle the prodigal’s return, in which bunny and canary coo over their baby son. out of the bassinet pops incongruously large bovine, who shrieks “HOWDY MAAAA! HI PAAAA!”, the sheer volume of his voice enough to blow both of his parents away and out of the scene. and, with that, the scene ends, red curtains colorized from porky’s romance marking the sequence’s end. short, sweet, to the point, and hilarious.
ending right where the cartoon began, the owl caricature of alexander woollcott bids us farewell, the iris closing in on the bell he rings as he exclaims that all is well.
like so many other cartoons i’ve reviewed, this is one that i slowly warmed up to upon rewatching it and typing out the review for myself. i didn’t entirely dislike the cartoon upon my first watch, but it’s undeniably dated and deserves its title as possibly the most dated cartoon. without further research, some of the jokes and caricatures (if not all of them) are difficult to appreciate. the animation has bursts of energy throughout the short, the highlights being the scenes featuring raven mcquarry and moutha bray, but otherwise remains relatively simple and conservative. tashlin does incorporate a few intriguing camera angles throughout the cartoon, but many other entries of his are far more cinematic.
however, despite all of that, this cartoon is not without its bonuses: art loomer’s backgrounds are stunningly gorgeous and rich, and as someone who loves the lush, painterly backgrounds of the 1930s, this is heaven to me. and, as i mentioned previously, tedd pierce’s scenes are great--the tizzie fish and andy bovine sequences are undeniable comedic highlights.
so, if you’re willing to dedicate time to put in the research for this cartoon, you’ll find it’s quite fascinating! i’m certain this was a much bigger gut-buster in 1937 than it is in 2020, but even then, this is a good cartoon for people such as myself who love to learn more information and seek out facts. as a result, i’d recommend it to people who fall into that category. if you’re just someone who wants a good laugh and a leisurely watch, there are more interesting cartoons that lie ahead. you won’t miss much by skipping it.
with that said, here’s the link!

Schitt’s Creek 5x03 Review (Spoilers.)
Oh my gosh, David! Season five of Schitt’s Creek is here and in full swing. After the double premier last week, we get a supercut David x Patrick episode!
Sometimes after five seasons, a comedy can grow a bit stagnant, with characters evolving a little too much, losing some of their originality and pizazz in storylines that don’t fit with what we know about them from previous seasons. But Schitt’s Creek’s characters feel more fine-tuned, more themselves than they ever were as the Rose family buries their roots in the small town. Each main cast member brings something to his or her character, and there’s a confidence there that only comes with playing a character for a few years.
Whether it is the advanced facial gymnastics of Dan Levy’s David or the hilarious affectations of the brilliant Katherine O’Hara, each actor has hit their stride in the show, as much as their characters have in their new home.
Moira takes charge of one side story, after having nailed her performance in The Crows Have Eyes as the crazy bird lady, Moira is home, but her friends are already sick of her stories. Feeling jilted over her bragging the Jazza-Gals become increasingly agitated, especially Jocelyn, who is exhausted looking after a newborn baby for a few months. Katherine O’Hara is a genius, the way she can turn any ordinary sentence into a zany one-liner with her ever-changing accent and vocabulary. But more than that, the supporting characters, Ronnie Jocelyn and Twyla help really sell the story. Many sitcoms rely solely on a core cast, but SC isn’t afraid to lean on and introduce different side characters, as the story needs them. They help moor the Rose family in the realities of the lower class and sometimes end up making them better people. I cheered this episode as Jocelyn finally decides to stand up to Moira, to stop her bragging. Sure Moira brushes it off, forever living the fantasy of the falling starlet, but it was still fun to watch.
Meanwhile, Johnny, Stevie, and Rowland join forces to help fool an out of town travel blogger into thinking the Rosebud hotel is world class. Deciding that Stevie should act as a plant, a fake guest who talks the hotel up, the two men struggle to keep up appearances. However, the plan is thwarted when Stevie starts crushing on the blogger. Emily Hampshire, who plays Stevie, has always done an excellent job of playing the dry-witted, socially awkward hotel owner, and up until now the only person she’s been close with is David. Seeing her unable to stop smiling, flirting awkwardly is refreshing, and not at all out of character as her new love interest is just as snarky and pessimistic. This kind of character growth, and the potential for more is a good step for Stevie. As the Roses settle further into their rolls around town, Stevie stepping out of hers is a clever way of showing how the family has influenced her positively over the years.
David and Patrick have some important conversations this week. When waiting for the new season, seeing more of these two together was one of the things I was most excited for. We start with an adorable domestic scene, early in the morning, David still asleep while Patrick reads before Patrick’s roommate Ray walks in, multiple times without knocking. Another example of SC utilizing side characters to diversify the story. The overly chipper Ray forces Patrick to come to the conclusion that he and David should go apartment hunting, sending David into a spin.
“I never saw myself living with someone,” he confides with his sister who quips back:
“That makes total sense, considering nobody you’ve dated has ever expressed any interest in that.”
While this is a fairly benign jab, one typical between the two siblings, but it establishes that David is moving forward, maturely in a relationship more than he ever has. I’ve read multiple people praising the portrayal of these two, how their storyline doesn’t revolve around any hate or tragedy. Their story focuses on their different approaches to life and figuring out how they fit together.
As Ray shows them through an apartment in Patrick's price range it’s really funny watching this in action as David recoils at how shabby the place in, while Patrick thinks the place is great. Dan Levy has mastered the art of looking unimpressed with distaste at things, so he had plenty to work with here. Why he wouldn’t jump at any place that isn’t one small motel room he shares with his sister is beyond me, but this is David Rose we’re talking about.
The story kind of ends on a bummer note, hanging a question mark over their relationship. It turns out Patrick was looking at apartments to live in alone, and he brought David with him not to live, but because he would probably be staying over a lot. I waited for David to say he actually was ready for that next step, but he didn’t. It ended with the implication that he was ready to live with Patrick. It felt like two steps forward and one step back for their relationship.
I’m hoping, as the season progresses we don’t just get lots of cutesy scenes, but some real development for them both. But either way, Schitt’s Creek’s first episodes of season five have been promising, hinting at lots of hijinks and chances for romance, (I can’t wait to see more of Tedd and Alexis as well). I also can’t wait to see what Moira’s next acting gig will be, and how it could top her performance in “The Crows Have Eyes”. That scene of her in the nest should be put in the MoMA.

~~~~~
Late Autumn on a sort of rundown farm. Guy in a truck pulls up to a man on the side of the road selling honey cheap. The man wants to buy some and the guy offers him taste, spilling some on the man as he does. The bee seller puts on his suit to the confusion of the other dude, says his bees are ornery. He then proceeds to let the bees free, and they attack the man, stinging him to death before returning to the hive box.
Cut to a night scene at the bee keeper's place. He leads an older man to a chair and puts honey on his hands, then places his hands in wooden contraption, and the man cannot get them free. He asks if his family will be looked after, and the bee keeper, McCabe, says they will believe he died in a car crash. McCabe appears in the other room where man's honey covered hands are, and dons his bee suit again, letting the bees sting this man's hands until he dies. McCabe goes into the room and the old man has been transformed into the younger man from the road. McCabe says he'll have to come back weekly for a "pick me up". The man is elated.
Another day, Micki arrives at a house looking for Mr. Purdy. A man with a shotgun and a barking dog appears at the door, saying he is Purdy's brother. Micki tries to explain she is looking for a hive his brother bought from the store. He tells Micki his brother is dead and wants her to leave, saying people aren't safe there at nightfall.
In an office, a Mr. Hendricks is getting bad news: his tumor will kill him in six to twelve months. She tries to comfort him that death is inevitable. He leaves, replaying the conversation, then sees the younger transformed man staring at him. Hendricks walks off.
Micki is at a phone booth telling Jack about her brief run in with Purdy's brother. Jack says Ryan can look up Purdy's death certificate, he'll do more research, and she says she'll love for more bee apiaries. Jack tells Ryan the hive is a one of a kind piece and that he is clueless as to how the curse will operate with it.
At his office, Hendricks is called in to the boss's office. The younger boss said he is phasing out the older man's division and he's being fired and losing his pension, to boot. Hendricks tries to reason with him but gets nowhere.
Ryan returns to Curious Goods with the death certificate for Purdy. He was stung by bees countless times after he bought the hive, so whoever has it now has been in possession of it for over a year. Ryan says there haven't been any other deaths by bee stinging, all deaths in that area have been normal. Jack wants to get to the place and goes to borrow Rashid's car.
Hendricks walks replaying his day in his head. The younger man from the bee transformation approaches him and Hendricks thinks he's being mugged. The man calls him Norm and tells him he is really Ben Landis. Hendricks says Ben died weeks ago in a crash, but the man tries to convince him it is true and eventually says enough to prove it. He asks how long his friend has to live, then tells him there is another option. Hendricks is unsure, but Ben is convincing enough. He leaves him a note with the name of the Apiary.
That night, Hendricks shows up at McCabe's apiary. He says if he signs over his life insurance to McCabe, how can he be sure his wife will be taken care of? McCabe reminds him how happy Ben is now. He offers to find someone that will be a good fit for his skill set.
At home, Hendricks tries to prepare his wife "just in case" something happens to him. But she is looking forward to their retired life together, unaware of all that has happene to her husband. He placates her.
Later, his boss is getting into an elevator and McCabe, acting like a janitor, joins him. He pulls out a jar of honey and puts a glob on the man's coat. He then lets his bees free to attack while covering himself.
Back at the apiary at night, Ben and Hendricks arrive. McCabe sends the older man inside, then tells Ben he needs to find an older man to substitute for his friend when he "dies". Ben is reluctant to kill, but McCabe threatens him with the need for a fresh dose of honey, pointing out how the man's hand is looking aged already. He leaves Ben to ponder the deal with the devil he has made. Inside, he has the bees sting Hendricks with the curse turning him
Driving, Ben spies a hitchhiker and picks him up, hiding a hook behind him. At the apiary, Hendricks body has transformed into that of his boss, young and healthy. Ben drags the now unconscious hitchhiker to a tractor and then turns the machine on, killing him. Ryan and Micki try and convince Purdy's brother to help them find the cursed hive box. He keeps his gun aimed at them an won't talk more than saying the area is cursed and he is protecting himself from someone.
Jack is talking to McCabe, but the man says no one would want an old antique bee hive. Ben arrives, his face looking aged, asking McCabe for "that honey". McCabe calls him Bob and says his order is all boxed up. Jack is suspicious.
McCabe is not happy with Ben and they argue, McCabe threatening Ben, who promises to keep his mouth shut. He then swallows up the honey.
In a field, Micki, Ryan and Jack try and figure out what is going on, Jack saying the man who approached McCabe looked "prematurely old". Micki remembers something from school about Egyptians using bees to restore youth. Jack says many cultures hold similar beliefs. He heads back to the store to do more research while they head back to try and spy on McCabe.
Hendricks in his new body and role as boss calls his wife, who is distraught over husband's death. He offers condolences, and offers any help he can.
Micki and Ryan snoop around McCabe's barn and set off a sensor that alerts him. Ryan finds the room with the chair and hand holds. Micki searches elsewhere and finds the stash of honey. They can't figure out what the chair is for and Ryan goes to search the loft. Micki tastes some of the honey. Ryan finds the bees and hive and McCabe approaches, covered in his suit. He lets the bees free and Ryan calls to Micki to flee. She is attacked before she can make it to the car and Ryan gets the fire extinguisher from the trunk and sprays her free of bees. They jump in and drive off, to McCabe's dismay.
Jack studies a bee under a microscope. It is full of blood, Ryan calls them vampire bees. Jack said they usually die after stinging, but these only died after Ryan sprayed them. They work out the honey keeping people young part, but can't figure out why there have been any bodies found with bee stings. They agree to confront Purdy's brother a third time.
Mrs. Hendricks calls her husband's boss, unknowing it is really him. She's concerned about the low pension, and that her husband changed his policy to a different person. He says he will look into it an take care of it for her. Then McCabe bursts into the office. He wants to know why the man hasn't answered his calls. "Hendricks" says he is unhappy, but McCabe says he owes him everything, happiness isn't his concern. He's there to collect on his debt. He needs more bodies, and that "Hendricks" will do whatever McCabe wants, which is to use this job to contact even richer, more powerful clients for his honey. McCabe again threatens his continued youth. He gives the man the Curious Goods business card and says he wants all three from the store dead.
Purdy is seen walking his property with his rifle, which Ryan wrests away from him suddenly. Jack and Micki appear and want to know where the hive is hidden. Purdy says the hive is from hell. He's reluctant to help and they push him until he admits McCabe IS his brother, having used the hive on himself first, killing the original McCabe and turning himself into the younger man. Micki wonders about why no bee-stung bodies, and Purdy says he makes the deaths look like normal farm accidents. They leave.
"Hendricks" is having coffee with his widow, trying to tell him how much her husband loved her. But she knows Marr fired her husband and calls him out on it. She begins to cry and wants him to leave. He again offers help. When he's gone, McCabe appears behind her and chloroforms the woman.
At the apiary at night, an aging "Hendricks" says they need to talk. He says he is not a killer. But McCabe shows Mrs. Hendricks stuck with her hands in the box. McCabe tells him if he refuses to do as told, she'll die.
The Curious Goods trio are watching the apiary from their car and see McCabe with "Marr", unsure who he is. They leave the car to find the cursed hive box. Mrs. Hendricks is still stuck and gagged. "Hendricks" stops driving away, looking at his aged face in the mirror.
Micki and Ryan decide to box all the honey and put it in the vault. McCabe sees the light on in the barn. "Hendricks" turns around and drives back to the farm.
Ryan brings one box of honey to the car as Micki packs another. They see McCabe heading toward the barn. Inside, Micki finds Mrs. Hendricks and ungags and frees her hands as McCabe walks in, gun drawn. He then puts Micki's hands in the bee box holes. He goes to get honey for her hands, but an even more aged "Hendricks" arrives, with the rifle. McCabe is able to knock the gun out of the man's hands when Ryan and Jack burst in to save Micki. They go to free Micki and the other woman while McCabe and "Hendricks" struggle.
McCabe sets his bees free on them, but they flee the barn. He is confident they can't run, but then "Hendricks shoots the jars of honey, which explode all over McCabe, causing the bee to attack him. Outside, "Hendricks" calls to his JoJo, who is very confused. She goes to the dying man who asks for forgiveness. He transforms back into his old body after he dies.
Ryan puts the bee box in the vault. Micki asks Jack if it was okay to let the bees go, and Jack says the hive was cursed, not the bees. Micki wonders if they'll ever know how many died from this item, Ryan says Purdy's brother should have spoken up sooner. Jack says sometimes all that's needed for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing. Ryan shuts the vault.
~~
My thoughts:
The bee hive box is a convoluted antique, using honey and multiple people to work its curse. It makes you wonder how the first guy, Purdy before he became McCabe, figured it all out.
This curse is a demanding one, too. Not only does it transform the people, but they need to rely on weekly doses of honey to remain young in their new forms. McCabe should be making lots of money with this scheme - and lots of enemies.
Loved the Autumn settings around the farm country. Some of the barns had seen better days, but the scenes were very pretty. And loved the little look at Rashid's unique car!
Overall, and interesting story. Loved Jack's comment at the end about evil triumphing if good men do nothing. And when Ryan comments about Hendricks changing his mind at the end, and Micki says its good to know they are not alone in their pursuit of justice. Nice end.
