“it just sucks that while i’m here, making plans and thinking about you, you just... didn’t even consider me,” praya said after a while. alex’s knuckles came loose on the steering wheel. up ahead, a line of cars slowed down as the street lights turned red. 

praya looked away. if she stared at alex one moment longer, at how city lights reflected off the surface of her smooth honey skin, she would never stand a chance. and in this moment, she needed to be angry at her. 

alex tapped her fingers twice against the steering wheel. “well, i told i’ve always wanted to go abroad for my uni, so, it’s not like this is out of nowhere. and i did ask you about long-distance relationships -”

“that one time,” praya scoffed. “the only time. and i made it clear how i feel about it.”

“so what do you want? for me drop the scholarship?” alex snapped.

“no, of course not,” praya quickly clarified. caution began to grow in her chest. she had seen alex angry so many times - but never when this anger was directed at her. praya hated how at a slight rise of alex’s voice, her own was beginning to shake. “i never - i never would’ve wanted that, not in a million years.”

alex glanced at her, and quickly turned her eyes on the road the light turned green. traffic was crawling; praya wanted to get home as soon as possible, fall asleep, and wake up in a world where alex was not going away.

“i’m just... worried, i guess.” oh, but it’s more than that. long distance relationships never work. at first, it would seem possible, but as time wore on, they would both be busied with different things, and one day, when they sat down to finally talk, they would realize they no longer had nothing in common, and then what’s the point? “statistically, long-distance is a no-go, from the start. couples will just end up hating each other at the end.”

“i will never be able to hate you,” alex said, with such conviction that made praya believe for once that this could really work. 

“we’ll never know what happens,” praya shrugs. 

silence fell over them. what was there left to say? it was not wrong to apply for an art degree in a university in vancouver, it was not wrong to want to pursue your dreams. praya had no business meddling with someone else’s future, even if it was her own girlfriend, even if the thought of not being able to see alex whenever she wanted to hurt. she kept thinking about her declining to chair in teimun because alex was coming home, and how, at the time, alex was her priority, because she saw her as a fixed point in her far future, a person she wanted to hold on to. 

and this? this felt like alex telling her that she wasn’t. as much as alex loved her, she still loved alex more. all those jokes about children and a house with a white picket fence - god, maybe minkyu was right. praya was too serious, too hopeful - too much for anyone to bear. maybe she was wrong in reading alex all along; that those jokes were... that, simply jokes. 

alex cleared her throat, and praya was startled back into reality. “aya, are you... are you crying?”

praya brought her hand to her eyes, and it came away wet. “um,” she turned her face to the window, coming face to face with a gojek driver who looked away as soon as it happened. “no?”

“i can clearly see it,” alex sighed. “babe, look, i’m sorry if my decision hurt you, but... it’s been my dream. isn’t it yours, too? you know, city house with minimalist details, one rebellious child, and a hot artist for a wife?”

god, do not lead me on, she wanted to say. instead, she laughed. “of course,” she said. “sorry, i was just being ridiculous. i support you 100%, hot artist. You better be makin’ some Mona Lisa by three years.”

alex grinned. “for what it’s worth, i promise i will make sure these last days are something of a fairytale for you. alright?”

“alright,” praya said, because what else praya could say?
