Although Tekapo officially has only a few hundred inhabitants, there is a lot going on in the centre during the high season. Tekapo is supposed to become more and more popular and we can also confirm this (compared to our trip in 2013). During our last visit in January 2018, there were an unusually large number of Asian travel groups on site. The weather information shown are so called point date forecasts.

Lake Tekapo Sights We hadn't seen such an impressive starry sky for ages. After Geraldine, State Highway 79 takes you straight to Tekapo. For this stretch we have again approx. We as flatland villagers are so impressed by the mountain scenery that the days on the coast are enough for us to want to go back to the Alps. But we do not simply want to go to the Alps but to Mount Cook, the highest mountain of New Zealand (3.724m). Embedded in the mountain world, the lake offers a more wonderful panorama. It is also interesting that despite the attractiveness of the lake, the usual tourist companions, such as shops and souvenir shops are almost completely missing.

The small village is ideal for a short coffee stop. In the delicatessen shop "Barker's of Geraldine" we bought some local products for the next weeks. You will find jams, syrups and other delicacies. "The way is the goal" - it sounds SO banal, but here at Lake Tekapo it's really true. The region around the glacial lake is very sparsely populated. Here the focus is clearly on nature. Nearby is also the ''Shepherd Dog Monument'', a bronze statue in honour of the shepherd dog, without whom farming in this mountainous area would be impossible. We will show you what to look out for when making your choice. The Tongariro National Park has a variety of walks. A very beautiful and easy trail with real colourfulness is the Silica Rapids Walk. New Zealand is a dream destination for many people, which is confirmed by the current statistics of Tourism New Zealand. But Mount John also offers some wonderful views by day. In Tekapo we had such a moment. As we sat on the balcony of our apartment in the evening and looked up into the sky, we could hardly believe our eyes. Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here. We are heading towards Christchurch to visit the city and the surrounding areas like Akaroa and Lyttelton. The Tasman Glacier Lake can even be travelled by small boats. During the earthquake in Christchurch in 2011 a part of the glacier broke off here and slid into the lake, triggering 4m high waves that rolled towards the boats. Looking at the calm lake and the small boats we don't even want to imagine this moment.

It is worth seeing because of its spectacular location at Lake Tekapo. The view through the window at the altar shows a chain of snow-covered alpine peaks above the bright blue lake. Next to the church stands the probably most photographed dog of New Zealand. His bronze statue was dedicated to the shepherd dogs, without whom intensive sheep breeding would probably not have been possible.
