Thursday, May 16th 2024. Lake Pukaki > Ben Ohau > Cromwell
This morning we circled back to Lake Pukaki, driving along the east side where we saw the area where they had built part of Lake Town in The Desolation of Smaug (the scene where the refugees all gather after their town is burnt down, although this is entirely based Jake's description of it as I literally have no memory of this film).
The farm's owner, Ian, was essentially the Radagast of our tour so far, in that he described a very lengthy family history of how the farm was eventually passed down to him, but only spent about two minutes talking about the actual filmmaking that had happened there - although his starry suit and the mannequin strapped to the back of his car (a mannequin called Richard, and no I'm not kidding) at least made this more entertaining. We then grabbed some snaps of the lake and had a bit of archery sesh - shooting arrows at a poster of Smaug (360⁰ no-scoped him, I did).
Afterwards we went to Ben Ohau where they filmed the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in The Return of the King where we staged a re-enactment of The Witch King getting shanked in the face, and then Jake and I both recited King Théoden's speech to his soldiers (the others on our tour) before their charge towards the Sauron's army (Jake went the Shakespeare route with his Théoden performance, and I went with more of a Toby Flenderson from The Office type performance, to mixed results).
We were then joined by Priscilla Cameron (and her dog Ginny), the owner of said field who had also worked as an extra during the time that they filmed there. At one point they had 500 horses and 2000 extras, 650-700 of whom were locals who they had hired as orcs and soldiers. She then informed us about nine years after they had filmed there that she had found one of the spears that they had left behind, and so we took photographs with an actual movie prop in the same field it was originally used in (naturally Jake and I posed for several pictures where we murdered each other with this spear, a foreshadowing for next week when it's just the two of us).
We grabbed lunch in Omarama at The Wrinkly Lambs where I enjoyed steak and chips before we made our way down to the Jones Family Fruit Store in Cromwell where I had my third ice cream in a week (the hotels all have gyms and yet I have taken the pathway to ice cream every time). For our dinner tonight we had Mexican at Amigos Cromwell and tomorrow we'll be heading down to Queenstown where our tour will be starting to come to an end (cue the violins).

Organic Lavender farm

NZ Alpine Lavender
Address: 657 Mount Cook Road, Ben Ohau 7999, New Zealand
We were on our way to Hooker Valley, saw a banner with ICE CREAM on it and we just turned in for it. We tried so many strawberry ice cream and this is our first time having lavender ice cream in NZ.
During lavender season, you do have to pay to enter the lavender farm but there wasn’t any lavender left so it was free. We got a $9 lavender vanilla ice cream, it was really good and generous portion. I suggest to share. There are lavender petals on the ice cream too, so pretty!
There are also portable toilets nearby.

Aoraki/Mount Cook is home to the darkest skies in the world and is part of the International Dark Sky Reserve, which has been labeled one of the best stargazing sites on Earth. No better spot to gaze from then the hot tub of our @alpine_cubes_nz Airbnb. However, it was a full moon night for us. Still many stars to gaze, but @alpine_cubes_nz picture does it more justice. Twizel
Tumblr media
Today's post by DANNY : DE HEK is "Twizel" Alpine village of Twizel deep in the Mackenzie Country is a town where the tussock plains reach the horizon, the rivers run slowly, the mountains touch the sky. Deep in the Mackenzie Country is a town where the tussock plains reach the horizon, the rivers run slowly, and the mountains touch the sky. Twizel nestles among peaceful lakes, where the broad plain meets the foothills of the Southern Alps. It began as a construction workers’ hostel town for the Upper Waitaki Power Development Scheme. When the project ceased and the workforce left, the town was passed to the Mackenzie County Council. Since then it has been growing in popularity as a holiday centre. The backdrop of snow-capped mountains inspires awe, but the climate can be harsh, with high summer temperatures and winter hoarfrosts. However the town is a convenient base for day trips into the surrounding countryside. Mt. Cook is just 40 minutes away, and the nearby Ben Ohau Range is a popular heli-skiing venue in winter. Lake Ruataniwha is also an attractive recreation area, where you can camp or picnic and indulge in boating and fishing. Lake Ohau, 25 km west of town, is well known for its stark beauty, beech forest and ski field. Read the full article

Ben Ohau, Canterbury, New Zealand
Loch Cameron New Zealand Just outside of Twizel, we found this small pond while driving toward Glen Lyon. As we were late driving out with the kids and the light started happening, we stopped here for them to play and watch the fish jump around while I snuck in a few shots of reflected clouds before the wind came along and blew them away.

Feature Friday
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Four years after the mysterious disappearance of her father, a young girl, her brother, and a friend are transported across the galaxy by three mystical beings to search for him before he is lost to the darkness. A Wrinkle in Time was filmed in Los Angeles, Eureka, and New Zealand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meg lives at 2523 4th Avenue in Los Angeles with her mother and brother who brings by a strange woman one evening.
Tumblr media
Meg’s bedroom, where she wakes up during the storm, is located at 1927 South Oxford Avenue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meg goes to middle school at Crenshaw High School where she is bullied by her neighbor Veronica and gets into trouble for hitting her with a ball.
Tumblr media
Meg and Charles Wallace go walking their dog Fortinbras down Prescott Court north from 31st and then onto West 30th Street where they run into Calvin.
Tumblr media
Charles Wallace leads them to Mrs. Who’s house at 2153 West 30th Street.
Tumblr media
Meg’s parents give a presentation in a flashback about their theories at the Japanese American National Museum playing NASA but they are laughed out of the room.
Tumblr media
Meg is hanging out in the backyard with Calvin when Veronica leans out of her bedroom window next door at 2515 4th Avenue. This house was previously used as the Eppes house in the series Numb3rs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The adventure begins on the planet Uriel where the kids search for clues of their father’s whereabouts. These extensively digitally enhanced scenes were filmed on the hillsides of Hunter Valley Station on Lake Hawae in New Zealand.
Tumblr media
Later, after Meg takes control of a jump, everyone ends up on Camazotz in the field of Ben Ohau Station.
Tumblr media
The field is transformed into a forest filmed at Sequoia Park in Eureka which is then engulfed in a storm.
Tumblr media
Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace then find themselves in a creepy suburb filled with identical houses and identical children doing identical things. These homes were filmed on Orbit Lane in a small military housing development in San Pedro for Fort MacArthur.
Tumblr media
The suburb changes again into Venice Beach filled with colorful people where Charles Wallace is separated from the others.

Lake Ruataniwha with Ben Ohau in the background by PsJeremy Lake Ruataniwha is located in the Mackenzie Basin in New Zealand's South Island. An artificial lake, it formed in 1977-1981 as a result of the Waitaki hydroelectric project. It lies on the traditional boundary of the Canterbury and Otago provinces, with the town of Twizel two kilometres to the north. ---Wikipedia https://flic.kr/p/2iDz9zV

Tag 12 Methven (49 km, 212 hm, ordentlich Wind)
