Sorry to once again be a cricket blog on main but certain high level officials need to understand that you can say England need to produce better talent (bowlers) without saying the kookaburra ball should be used all the time in the county championship when it is clear to everyone with a braincell that it is simply not a viable option for the conditions in this country most of the time

Embracing Tradition
Maha Shivratri, which translates to the “Great Night of Shiva,” is celebrated with great fervor across India and among Hindus worldwide. It falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February-March). This auspicious day is believed to be the time when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction.
Spiritual Significance
For devout Hindus, Maha Shivratri holds immense spiritual significance. It is a time for introspection, penance, and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fasts, perform rituals, and offer prayers at Shiva temples throughout the night. The chanting of mantras, singing of bhajans (devotional songs), and recitation of Shiva scriptures create an atmosphere charged with divine energy.
Rituals and Customs
Maha Shivratri is marked by various rituals and customs that vary regionally but share a common thread of reverence for Lord Shiva. Devotees often visit Shiva temples, especially the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. They offer belpatra (leaves of the bilva tree), milk, honey, water, and other traditional offerings to the Shiva Lingam, symbolizing the worship of the divine masculine energy.
Spiritual Awakening through Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation hold a special place during Maha Shivratri celebrations. Many devotees engage in pranayama (breathing exercises), asanas (yoga postures), and dhyana (meditation) as a means of attaining spiritual enlightenment and connecting with the cosmic consciousness. The practice of yoga is believed to purify the body, mind, and soul, preparing devotees for deeper spiritual experiences.
Wellness and Fitness
As a sports and fitness equipment manufacturer, RioGrand encourages individuals to incorporate wellness practices into their daily lives, including during religious observances like Maha Shivratri. Engaging in physical activities such as yoga, meditation, and pilates not only promotes physical fitness but also enhances mental clarity and emotional well-being. By nurturing the body, mind, and spirit, individuals can experience holistic growth and fulfillment.
Celebrating Maha Shivratri with RioGrand

We offer a range of sports and fitness equipment designed to support individuals on their wellness journey. By honoring traditions, nurturing our bodies, and elevating our consciousness, we can experience profound transformation and inner peace. May this Maha Shivratri inspire us to embark on a journey of wellness, spirituality, and fulfillment.

Bitter Brit here, cricket and baseball are not comparable at all.
The batting style would have to be unlearned and relearned. Baseball seems to be the same swinging motion every time, cricket has a much greater variety of ways to hit the ball (see cut, ramp, pull, hook, drive - each in forwards, defensive or reverse).
Same with bowling which is totally different to pitching. Cricket bowlers are not allowed to throw the ball, it’s a very specific action.
For batters, the bounce of the cricket ball is inconsistent & varies at every venue. Cloud cover and sun placement apparently affects the ball movement. (am not joking, cricket is bizarre).
There’s also the strategy. Playing for a draw was/is a valid target. Especially in Bradmans era. The kind of cricket he played lasted 5 days per match and for a lot of that he would have been fielding. So in addition to being good at his thing, he had to be a decent fielder (not an all rounder tho that’s different). Fielders don’t wear gloves either. Only helmets if they stand at the sillies.
Long story short, Gretzky might be able to pick up cricket before bradman learned to skate, but baseball experience is unlikely to help. (And it would take far longer to understand cricket rules than hockey rules).
FASCINATING
-> going to call it a draw in the "who would be better at the other's sport" game then. like you could philosophize about the amount of exercise/training a canadian from the 80s and an australian from the 30s are getting but im not that deep in sports medicine discourse for that to be happening
-> the only rebuttal i'll make to this because you obviously know what you're talking about and i do not think about cricket at all is that skating is Difficult As All Fuck; learning to so much as stop effectively can take days. that being said unlearning a baseball swing to have to re-learn 30 different cricket swings also sounds like mental and physical torture so fair enough
-> table tennis agenda STILL ON THOUGH!

Alan Watts, spiritual entertainer:
* * * * *
“Although my parents suffered through two horrendous wars and the Depression, which hit them hard, I cannot imagine being born to a more harmonious and unostentatiously virtuous couple. Yet I feel that I never quite gave them what they wanted. I don't know what that was, and perhaps they didn't either. But I was a weird child. I was a fantast who believed in fairies and magic when all the other children had given them up for twaddle. I preferred watching birds to playing cricket. I adopted a strange and un-English religion, and went off on my own to a far country.
They said I had "imagination," which was good but dangerous, and the neighbors would speak of Mrs. Watts as "Alan Watts's mother." I told anyone who would listen endless tales of fantasy and of blood-and-thunder. I would conduct funeral ceremonies for dead birds and bats and rabbits instead of learning tennis. I read about ancient Egypt and Chinese tortures and Aladdin's lamp instead of "good books" by Scott, Thackeray, and Dickens. I have no idea how I came to be so weird, but never for a moment have I regretted that I forgetfully reincarnated myself as the child of Laurence Wilson Watts and Emily Mary Buchan, at Rowan Tree Cottage in Holbrook Lane, in the village of Chistlehurst, Kent, England, almost due south of Greenwich, on the morning of January 6, 1915, at about twenty minutes after six, with the Sun in Capricorn, conjuncted with Mars and Mercury and in trine to a Moon in Virgo, with Sagittarius rising, and under bombardment in the midst of the First World War.”
~ Alan Watts, 'In My Own Way: An Autobiography'

Magda try to teach Princesse other sport but always fail if it involve ball's because Princess would catch it with her hand instead even though it's tennis ball
She tries cricket too but Princesse refuses to bat and just tries to catch the ball instead. Princesse is literally only happy playing ball games if it involves her catching the ball every time

WIP Wednesday
A little snip from my latest chapter for my Northanger Abbey fic "And Baby Makes Three" (AO3). I'm going for a jokey punchline and leaning into the first chapter where everyone who knows young Catherine is convinced that she is not heroine material.
"You see, I was a massive tomboy as a child. My mother despaired of me. She worried that I'd grow up completely unfit for polite society. But then Aunt Bess took me under her wing, as it were. She taught me how to play tennis and croquet and golf and badminton and bowling, as well as how to swim and skate. And she took me skiing with her in Vermont for a few years. She sent me to ballroom dancing lessons and would have signed me up for Spanish and Irish dancing too but my parents weren't very keen on the idea."
"You've done all that?"
"I didn't say I was good at any of it," Catherine modestly deflected.
Henry didn't believe her. He had seen her play golf already.
"Oh, and field hockey, lacrosse, rowing, and cricket," she amended, "which ruined me for all other bat sports. Basically everything that didn't involve football, horses, or guns.
"The whole point of the whirlwind was to keep me so busy doing acceptable activities that I'd have no time for, well, unacceptable activities," she concluded. "And it worked. Now I've started to settle down and Aunt Bess has been teaching me how to play cards and knit although to be honest I don't think I'll stick with it much longer."
"Why not?" Henry asked as if prompted.
"I'm terribly competitive. At least with cards, my partner and I are playing against another couple; with knitting, it's just me versus the yarn, and I can't stand losing."

On today's episode of Americans finding simple facts about other countries so unbelievable that they somehow turn racist on the way: so many notes on that post about Disney losing the rights to air cricket are just straight up uncomfortable to read. "Why are these former colonies still pretending to like cricket" look, colonisation leaves you a bunch of stuff assimilated with your own culture and that's what becomes your culture now because history is inextricable from culture. Our street food is affected by foods brought in at ports, our architecture is affected by it, in some places bakeries are a huge part of the local culture because of colonial influence and it's not as black and white as "any colonial influence is evil" because we do like our buns and our pastries and our pav bhaji and yes, even our cricket. It's a part of our culture now too and we made it our own. And all this coming from Americans, seriously?
"Cricket is an expensive game only played by rich people" no?? Any game at a professional level is gonna have more expensive equipment but. Cricket is played in every little neighbourhood here, look up "gully cricket" for more, people usually use tennis balls because they're cheaper and there's one bat shared by a bunch of people and specialised rules ("this gate is the wicket, okay?" "if the ball goes beyond this point it's a six but if it goes too far and gets lost it's out").
People are taking their surprise about not being the centre of the world cricket being the second most popular sport and dealing with the discomfort of that worldview by just rejecting it and trying to frame it as some sort of super elite British game that only pretentious people are interested in. It's not even as popular in England as it is in India ff
