Today it's 60 years anniversary of the opening of the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows! ⁠ ⁠ Excerpt from Modern New York:⁠ (..)The largest, tallest, and most fun was the NEW YORK STATE PAVILION by Philip Johnson, Richard Foster, and engineer Lev Zetlin. The pavilion’s main section was the elliptical Tent of Tomorrow, which was covered by a multicolored translucent roof suspended from 100-foot columns. The Texaco New York State paper map was recreated in colorful terrazzo paving. The map captured the spirit and dynamism of the age and was one of the first large-scale pieces of public Pop Art.⁠ ⁠ Another fair structure that still stands is the PORT AUTHORITY BUILDING (now Terrace on the Park). It had a heliport on its roof where choppers brought fair attendees from local airports as well as Manhattan. Below the landing deck was a thousand-seat restaurant with an expansive view of Queens. The building now survives as a catering hall. Dallas County Records Building overhaul heralded for preserving history, adapting for future

The Dallas County Records Building on Elm Street in downtown Dallas has been renovated and expanded.

The complexities of restoring the Dallas County Records Building exceeded the needs of a typical office building renovation.

The three-building complex built from 1915 to 1955 formerly housed aging courtrooms, outdated offices and an abandoned jail connected through misaligned floors.

The project required balancing the preservation of the property’s rich history and updating it for modern workplace needs.

The renovations would have still been a years-long project even if a global pandemic didn’t happen in the middle of the upgrades.

About nine months of the two-year design and documentation stage were spent understanding the infrastructure and creating accurate computer drawings of the complex, and a super core-fill solution was used to connect the three buildings, which previously sat on different elevations.

The renovations paid homage to the county’s history by literally peeling back the property to reveal safes built into the walls, coffered ceilings and the original terrazzo flooring covered by carpet while incorporating ample lighting, security features and moveable walls so workspaces can be changed upon the fly. The result: a user-friendly site that’s more efficient and flexible but that preserves the site’s colorful history.

Gli equipaggi della Squadra Volante e dei Falchi della Squadra Mobile, già impegnato in servizi antirapina ed antiborseggio, sono intervenuti a seguito della segnalazione in Sala Operativa 113 di una rapina commessa ai danni di una tabaccheria in via Plateja. Dalle prime testimonianze dei dipendenti della tabaccheria e dall’analisi delle immagini del sistema di video sorveglianza interno del locale, i poliziotti avrebbero raccolto indizi utili a ritenere che il presunto responsabile fosse un tarantino di 47 anni, noto alle Forze dell’Ordine per simili reati (da ultimo, sarebbe ascrivibile a lui un episodio analogo avvenuto lo scorso aprile ai danni di una tabaccheria del quartiere Tamburi). Advent Calendar Day 15 - Deck the Halls Part Two

The anticipation and the dread, were seeping into the very walls and pores of both Tracy Island and its inhabitants at the thought of Gordon's idea of organising the Christmas decorations.

But every time they asked him. His response would be

"We'll see."

Sometimes he would mix it up a bit and say something like...

"You're all gonna have to wait."

And his favourite?

"Patience is a virtue!"

It infuriated them, as nothing seemed to be getting done. Mind you, they had been busy with rescues. But surely there'd have been some sort of clue?

John, who normally took the neutral ground, was also curious and secretly took it upon himself to nosey around Gordon's browsing and online purchasing history.

And came up with zilch.

So ... what the hell was going on?

Time ticked onwards, rescues came and went and just as Scott's eye was twitching from frustration ...

"Dun dun dunnnn.... I have an announcement to make!"

"Urgh, finally," he muttered, unnecessarily slamming his mug down, "so ... let's see what you've been up to then."

"Follow me."

Gordon's excitement grew as he skipped along, feeling like the Pied Piper leading a string of children.

It was a short walk from the kitchen to the circular seating. But ... it looked ... normal. No decorations, no tree. Nothing.

"Ta daa!"

They stood there, all anticipation vanished, at the sight of ... nothing. Scott stepped forward, towering over his brother and scowling.

He knew about Gordon and his pranking history, but this time he'd gone too far.

"Is this some kind of a sick joke?" He snarled, "because its not bloody funny."

Gordon blinked, not quite understanding, then pointed upwards to what looked like a ball of weeds, hanging from the ceiling.

"I got mistletoe," he explained, "you know ... cos Lady P is coming over ... and ... what?"

He looked at everyone and the expressions on their faces. He shrugged.

"It's fresh ... only just arrived today."

A wall of silence, Scott walked away shaking his head.

"Hey!" Gordon followed, gesturing wildly, "for the record, I listened to you all and decided to go all minimalist. And you're still not happy."

He stormed off towards the pool, hit the button for the floodlights. A pile of inflatables cascaded from a concealed net and bounced in the water and surrounding terrazzo.

"Did you really think I'd be that dumb?" He asked as they all grinned, "Dad missed out on all of this. So why not give him a Gordon Tracy Special. And after that, I'll concede and let the rest of you do the decorating."

Merchandise Mart, Chicago (No. 3)

The Merchandise Mart was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White to be a "city within a city". Second only to Holabird & Root in Chicago art deco architecture, the firm had a long-standing relationship with the Field family.  Started in 1928, completed in 1931, and built in the same art deco style as the Chicago Board of Trade Building, its cost was reported as both $32 million and $38 million.  The building was the largest in the world in terms of floorspace, but was surpassed by the Pentagon in 1943,  and now stands forty-fourth on the list of largest buildings in the world.  Once the largest commercial space in the world, New Century Global Center in China is now recognized by Guinness World Records as holding the record.

Designer Alfred Shaw integrated art deco stylings with influences from three building types—the warehouse, the department store and the skyscraper. A warehouse block stands as the 18-story bulk of the building. Ribbon piers define the windows, and the building's chamfered corners, minimal setbacks, and corner pavilions disguise the edges of the mass and visually reduce bulk. The south corner pavilions are of greater height than the north corner pavilions. The building is open at the pedestrian level with bronzed framed display windows, typical of a department store, on the south, west and east boundaries. The 25-story central tower ascends with a peak in the form of a skyscraper, and rests in the southern half of the building. Deeply recessed portals occur between raised panels, and are adorned with medallions featuring the interlocked initials of the Merchandise Mart. The same logo occurs throughout the building. Fifty-six American Indian chiefs circled the tower's crown, a reference to the site's history and Chicago's early trade activities. Three and a half feet wide by seven feet tall, the terra cotta figures were barely visible from the street, meant to be viewed from the upper floors of the skyscrapers planned to rise along the riverbank. 

The lobby of The Merchandise Mart is defined by eight square marble piers, with storefronts in side aisles framed in embossed bronze trim.  The green and orange terrazzo floor was conceived as a carpet: a pattern of squares and stripes bordered by overscaled chevrons inlaid with The Mart's initials. The chevron theme is continued in the column sconces lighting an ornamented cornice overhead.  Referred to as "business boulevards", two wide 650 feet (200 m) long corridors with terrazzo floors in the upper levels featured six and one-half miles of display windows. Building regulations specified identical entrances along corridors but tenants could personalize the individual floor space. Excepting the corridors, elevator halls, and exhibition space on the fourth floor, the 5 acres (20,000 m2) of each upper floor was "raw space" with concrete floors.

mandymooremm: Here are a few more before and after pics of our living room. I never expected to spend so much time in this particular room but we have and do: listening to records, reading, writing some tunes on the piano, etc… There’s always a cat curled up in one of my fav blue velvet chairs- this room is easily the chillest space in our house. Although we didn’t change the footprint of this room, the terrazzo floors, blush curtains and generous furniture layout set the tone for the whole house.
