Tutsak

The Neon Bible
Writer-director Terrence Davies has blamed himself for the problems with THE NEON BIBLE (1995), but I think the fault lies largely in John Kennedy Toole’s source novel. I guess you could blame Davies for keeping those flaws in his film, but until they surface at the end, it’s an elegant depiction of growing up gothic and probably gay in the South from about 1938 until sometime after World War II. Young David (first Drake Bell and then Jacob Tierney) lives in poverty with abusive father Denis Leary and fragile mother Diana Scarwid. His only solace, and the film’s great saving grace, is his Aunt Mae (Gena Rowlands) a big band singer who comes to live with them. She’s there to show David there’s something beyond the dead-end small town in which they live, to tend Scarwid’s wounds when Leary beats her and to keep the family going when Leary is killed in World War II and Scarwid loses her mind. She has a lovely, moving speech about her life as a singer that could be used to show acting students how simply and effectively one can personalize the details of a life not one’s own. And when she sings “My Romance” at a local dance, she shows you just how eloquently a non-singer can deliver a song. Davies’ films can be difficult for viewers, and I don’t think this is the best entry point for his work. He lingers on images and creates a measured rhythm it’s easy to dismiss. But if you give into it, you may begin to realize just how rich the images are. They’re worth spending time with. And he gives his actors room to breathe, Watching Rowlands and Scarwid work through their emotional lives in long, often silent closeups, is one of the film’s great pleasures. There’s an added bonus for my Atlanta friends in the chance to spot local actors like Tom Turbiville, Stephanie Astalos-Jones and Jill Jane Clements.
