News/Announcements: JOVM Thanks Creatives Rebuild New York
News/Announcements: JOVM Thanks Creatives Rebuild New York @ArtsCRNY
The ideas behind Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) aren’t new — but the sense of urgency behind its implementation is very new: Inspired by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) Artists Project of 1978-1980, Creatives Rebuild New York is an extension of Mellon Foundation President Elizabeth Alexander’s work on the Governor Cuomo’s Reimagine New York Commission in 2021, created as a…

LAS HORAS EXTRA
Mara Pastor
Poesía puertorriqueña, 2024
ISBN 978-987-4430-31-1

New Heather Raffo play to explore migration at the Arab American National Museum
Tumblr media
From the Tigris to the Detroit River, The Migration Play Cycle written by and starring Heather Raffo, is an epic map of a play linking the world’s migration patterns to the daily transactions of our lives. An ambitious theatrical experiment, it invites us to imagine a new relationship to human value, by first unpacking what we value. Uncovering a world where all populations must confront not only global migration, but their own.
Heather Raffo is a singular and outstanding voice in the American theater whose work has been championed by the New Yorker as “an example of how art can remake the world.” Having helped forge a new genre of Arab American theater, she’s spent her career writing and embodying stories of Iraq: from the lives and dreams of Iraqi women in her seminal work 9 Parts of Desire (2003), to the suicidal ideation of an Iraq war veteran in the opera Fallujah (2012), to the restless longings of an Iraqi refugee architect in Noura (2018).
“As an Iraqi American playwright, migration is personal to me.  In 2003, I had over one hundred family members living in Iraq, I now have two cousins left in the country.  In the last decade, my Iraqi relatives have scattered across four continents. My family understands what it means to be rooted to a place for thousands of years, then to scatter in less than ten.  While many audiences feel sympathetic to those impacted by war, the trajectory my family took can be traced to economic factors to which we all contribute.”
The Migration Play Cycle: A New Theatrical Platform by Heather Raffo is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by the Arab American National Museum and NPN. This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, made possible through support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Aya Ogawa - The Nosebleed from the chocolate factory theater on Vimeo.
Written and Directed by Aya Ogawa. Performed by Drae Campbell, Haruna Lee, Peter Lettre, Aya Ogawa, Saori Tsukada and Kalli Turner. Set and Costume Design by Jian Jung. Lighting Design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew. Production Stage Manager: Lenyn Hernandez Marcia. Assistant Director / Assistant Stage Manager: Julia Izumi. Produced by John Del Gaudio.
Co-Presented with Japan Society.
Japanese-American playwright/director Aya Ogawa presents this final version of their intimate autobiographical piece that explores their fractured relationship with their long-deceased, enigmatic father. Since the show’s sold-out work-in-progress showings at Brooklyn Arts Exchange and The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Incoming! Series, downtown theatergoers have been anticipating the premiere of The Nosebleed. Through a series of turbulent, absurd and poignantly comic vignettes, Ogawa reveals the seemingly insurmountable cultural and generational gap between himself and their father, who was a typical Japanese corporate businessman, and examines the questions faced by the playwright in their own motherhood experience today. A theatrical memorial and healing ritual for the audience, this darkly humorous, tender and inventive play considers how we inherit and bequeath failure, and what it takes to forgive.
The Nosebleed is co-presented by The Chocolate Factory Theater and Japan Society. The Nosebleed was developed in part through the Parent Artist Space Grant and AIR Program at Brooklyn Arts Exchange and The Public Theater’s Devised Theater Working Group/Under the Radar Incoming! Series. Subsidized studio space provided by The Play Company through the A.R.T./New York Creative Space Grant, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Support for The Nosebleed was provided by a residency at Mount Tremper Arts and The Made in NY Women’s Film, TV & Theatre Fund by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts.

In Our Hands: Chinese Painting Conservators in US Museums, July 19, 2023
Whether carefully reinforcing the cracks in an ancient handscroll or remounting the portrait of an imperial ancestor, traditional Chinese painting restorers have cared for Chinese artworks in United States museums for over thirty years. Now focused on passing along their knowledge and skills, these dedicated artisans are training the next generation of art conservators to take on these responsibilities. Through in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of conservation studios in US museums, In Our Hands captures the generational, cultural, and educational shift taking place in the field of Chinese painting conservation. Produced by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art under the direction of Eros Zhao for Templux Films, this unprecedented documentary reveals the personal stories of nine conservators dedicated to preserving their traditional craft while advancing the field, an undertaking that is vital to the future of Chinese cultural heritage in the West. Filmed in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project was made possible through the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and through the efforts of people from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, the University of Michigan's Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Mayflower branco, Angela Davis, Cleopatra negras?
E qual a dimensão deste passado revelado?
