2023 is the year for asking the burning questions like "What if David Tennant came back to play a queer, nonbinary, nearly-immortal, otherworldly being that loves Earth and whose greatest adversary list somehow includes a cup of coffee?"

Ruby: Yeaaaah, The Doctor just constantly trauma dumped on me starting from the day we met
Yasmin Khan, who has finally been convinced to come back to companion support group after finding out that The Doctor settled down with a family 48 hours after leaving her: I have to leave

I don't care what you say about the 60th anniversary specials. David Tennant's Doctor has never been fruitier than whatever the hell he was doing in Utopia. The way he looks at Professor Yana? Whatever the hell kind of vibes he was putting off in his conversation with Jack in the radiation chamber? Ignoring the two people who currently fancy you in exchange for looking near-worshipfully at your evil ex in human form because he embodies hope? Telling your other ex that you can't stand to look at him because he's wrong yet being more honest with him than you have anyone else for a long, long time? Unhinged queer icon. Who needs healthy admissions of feeling when you have whatever the hell kind of subtext-rising-to-text these two moments are conveying

im just saying that if i had been in charge of s6 of doctor who, i would have fully leaned into the horror of amy's pregnancy, the loss of her own agency in it, the way she was used as a vessel to create a child she would never hold again, amy pond who never indicated once that she even wanted a child and was made to have one anyway against her will, and once they were done using her, they even took away any choice she might make about it in the future.
and i would have had this be a factor in amy and river's relationship going forward. how do you interact with a child you never knew, never got to decide if you wanted to have, and she's also already your friend, you love her as this miraculous, insane woman who has saved your life more than once. she's always known more about you than you could about her, but now you know exactly how much she was keeping from you. it's not like she could have told you, could have stopped it, but all this time, she was your friend and she was your daughter, and how do you learn to live with her?

While the extent to which dot and bubble handled its racism themes well is something I cant comment on due to the fact my skin tone is approximately the same as a sickly raw chicken, I do think it was a ballsy ass move that I do really like to have the Episode Where We Confront The Doctor Is BlackTM be set in the future rather than the past.

based on a conversation I had with my best friend and after 10 minutes of crying laughing we agreed that this was very doctordonna coded.

I need an episode where sacha's master winds up at unit and is forced to help them, but something's made him need a change of clothes- cue kate mentioning there's a box in the archive that might be his style, and he ends up wearing delgados outfit for the rest of the episode. He offhandedly mentions that he'd seen one of missy's skirts and had considered putting it on - the only reason he didn't was that he couldn't find the matching hat. Even better if Kate waits for him to smile/admit he's joking and quickly realises he's 100% serious.

ohhh!!! guys, the Toymaker is wearing sleeve garters because it's the traditional outfit of poker dealers...they'd wear them to hike up their sleeves and show they haven't hidden any cards!!! the Toymaker is wearing sleeve garters to show that he is an honourable player and won't cheat!!!! 👀

We do NOT give Jackie Tyler and Mickey Smith their props for their character growth in the Parting of the Ways. Rose is absolutely amazing, an absolute ferocious beacon of hope and stubbornness and bravery in the finale, the absolute reason why the Doctor lives and the world is saved and an equal hero to Nine, but she has a moment of doubt. A moment of hesitancy.
And Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler step in and help her save the day. Both Mickey and Jackie give up on their idea of Rose and their hatred of the Doctor and help her pull open the TARDIS. Even within this one episode we see them struggle with their feelings and decide to put them aside and help do this because Rose is right- this is a better way of living your life.
Doctor Who is about ordinary people making extraordinary decisions and making themselves extraordinary and this doesn't just apply to official companions (who I love with all my might)- it applies to the people they love, too. We see it over and over again in Davies' era, with Jackie and Mickey and Sylvia and Tish and Wilfred and Francine and Harriet Jones and every one-off character as well, from Lynda-with-a-Y to Jabe to Gwyneth to Novice Hame to McDonnell to Sally to Chantho to Nancy to all the rest.
Doctor Who is at its strongest when the story is focused on the strength of the bleeding, beating heart of humanity (and character in general, in its non-humans), when the characters drive the story, when at the end of the day you understand why, for all of the world's flaws, the Doctor comes back over and over again because of people like this- not just his companions, but the Jackies and Mickeys and all the rest of the world.

“Ricky September and Gothic Paul were just as racist and still deserved to die-“
Alright look. Look. These people are all in a literal bubble. A constant echo chamber that just reinforces their worldview and they consciously choose to push everything else away. Gothic Paul was actively pushing against that and trying to warn and help people. He was, just maybe, even starting to break out. And then there’s Ricky. Ricky just got online to post his songs and then he dropped the bubble. He spent time outside the echo chamber in the real world. He was reading books. Ricky was receptive to new thoughts and ideas and actively seeking them out.
Finetime is a cult. Like a lot of these things, it’s a cult. And most of these people are actively fueling that environment. Ricky and Paul were actively taking steps to break away from the cult. And yeah, they were still privileged white trust fund kids. That doesn’t make them inherently evil and mean that they can’t change. Everyone is capable of change. Part of the tragedy of the episode was that the two people actively trying to change things and learn were killed and the people who chose to reject it lived on. For now.
Let’s be real, that’s gonna be a Donner Party situation.

I think it's so funny (affectionately) that every person to play the doctor so far has been some guy (including jodie whittaker) by which I mean, yes sure DT won some polls calling him very attractive, but essentially he's just a lanky dude who's good at being sad, and most everyone else has equally been some character actor type who because of playing the doctor was getting their picture taken a fair bit suddenly, and JW is a lesbian dream, and every one of them has their fans who find them very attractive, and that's right and good, but... some guy in the end, doing their best for the photographer or deliberately leaning into the silly vibes, because that's what they're known for. meanwhile ncuti gatwa is Modelesque, is a Style Icon, is being shot artistically nude for queer pride issues, the doctor is now in The Club according to that first trailer, everyone's first reaction upon meeting this doctor so far has been 👀👀👀 can you imagine jack harkness??????
